Contents //// WELCOME TO ISSUE 232

37

Hello Welcome to a bright and bold Your Move, this issue featuring the Go Out lifestyle supplement to entertain you right through the coming months. We’ve visited Prescot, where family run businesses and quirky landmarks make for delightful town centre living, and sourced properties to rent or buy from the sleepy suburbs right through to the World Heritage waterfront. Il Café Deli at Toni & Guy comes under the spotlight, and our snapper caught those enjoying the launch of the city centre apartments released within the Liverpool One scheme. Hot Topic //// ISSUES AFFECTING YOU

How to recycle now The global economic crisis has spared few industries, and recycling is one big business to suffer a setback – ironically when in Liverpool, the Year of the Environment has put green matters at the top of the agenda. Why then should we be continuing to recycle in 2009? In the current climate, waste paper, plastic and glass which were previously valuable commodities, with a specific market overseas, have seen their values drop. Whereas before, Chinese industry welcomed our exported, recyclable materials to process into new goods, the fall in demand for those new goods back here has seen the supply of recyclables, temporarily at least, outstrip demand. Local green matters Locally, recycling is a big component of the government’s plans to create a more environmentally friendly society. The distribution of different coloured bins and different collection days has caused excitement and panic among homeowners in recent years. 32 Your Move

But has it all been worth it, and what has been happening to our recyclable material? The recycling cycle The majority of the UK’s recycling has, for some years, been collected by local companies and shipped thousands of miles to the East where Chinese recycling companies dominate the market. The raw materials are processed into new goods for British and US consumption, however, with a smaller market here for those imported goods, and a subsequent lack of demand for the masses of recycling in China, is continuing to separate, sort and arrange collection of recyclables really the most energy efficient option in the current climate? In the economy’s happier times, the

shipping of materials to China seemed to go unquestioned but, more recently, experts and the media have been asking whether an expensive journey really does justice to the time and energy, as well as the costs involved, in collecting and separating paper, plastic and glass – particularly as the fee gained for the exports has fallen considerably. It’s been found that, where in recent months, cardboard was valued at £40 a tonne, its value during the downturn has depleted to the extent of rendering it worthless. As a result, many have been asking, is Britain’s refuse really valuable enough to justify the expense of time and energy on their collection? Waste mountains? Reports that piles of waste paper in the UK have been

building for some time, since demand from China tailed off, has seen some argue that the costs of storing recyclable material must surely be a wasteful use of resources at a time when the UK’s industries are feeling the effects of a downturn. It’s certainly the case with paper that, after a certain time period, the decomposing substance ceases to be of any value to the customer. Yet, recycling organisations have now pointed out that the build up of recycling at the moment is still minimal, compared with the 10 million tonnes of waste recycled each year into new goods. Transport costs Furthermore, shipping the goods overseas is not as detrimental to the

How to recycle in Knowsley Grey bin - Food and cereal boxes, cardboard, ’phone books, food tins and drinks cans (place the lids inside the cans), glass bottle and jars, plastic bottles, envelopes (remove windows), papers, newspapers and magazines. Do not place items in plastic bags and rinse bottles and jars first. Blue bin - Lawn mowings, finished flowers, prunings, hedge clippings and leaves. Rubble, soil, turf or other items will not be recycled. Maroon bin - General waste that cannot be recycled but no building materials. environment as one might expect; even taking into account the energy used to transport the materials from the UK to China, the energy saved is still equivalent to saving more energy than it would take to send the materials to landfill and produce brand new goods. It’s also more cost effective even under present conditions. A spokesperson for WRAP commented that, even if storage fees are higher at present for councils to store waste before demand returns overseas, it is preferable to take this option over landfill: “Even if paper is sold for recycling at £10 per tonne, that is still preferable to paying the average of £45, including tax, to send it to landfill.” Covering the costs Until the market does recover, however – in several months according to a spokesperson from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) – it is, in some cases, the private recycling contractors who are bearing the brunt of additional storage costs. Recovering energy from waste Of course, rather than sending waste to landfill, using it to run a power station remains an option. The National Audit Office report found that the

government should make a commitment to cut waste going to landfill by 50 per cent by 2030. In this light, nine waste treatment projects have been approved to turn waste into energy across the UK. That is to say that, while when recycling goods proves not to be an available option, converting materials into energy is a preferred option. WRAP has concluded however, after compiling evidence from experts in the field, that burning waste to produce energy is a less efficient use of resources than recycling – even under the present market conditions. However, for local councils in Britain to continue running sorting and separating schemes, there needs to be the two options available to reuse the waste, it would seem. Eco-nomics Other positive statistics note that the 8.6 million tonnes of paper the UK recycled here and abroad in 2008 saved the equivalent of 11 million tonnes of C02 emissions, surely more than enough to justify the time, energy and costs of recycling even in a temporary downturn? It is tempting to agree that this is the case – but only if

recycling continues to be held high on the agenda across the different councils and local authorities, and while departments such as transport also treat the environment as a priority.

Contact the service for more details of the weekly waste collection and fortnightly recycling collection: recycling@knowsley.gov.uk or telephone 0151 443 2400.

Good habits The message then is to continue recycling as the markets will eventually recover, and the benefits of recycling are farreaching. Dr Liz Goodwin, CEO of WRAP, commented: “Around two thirds of households recycle as a way of life. The message to householders is that recycling is delivering great environmental benefits and there is absolutely no reason to stop.” Only time will tell whether your recycling will be used to create new goods or to power your home, or both, but either has to be better than plugging up our valuable land. If you are one of the two thirds of households then you’re probably already aware of how best to recycle in your area but, if not, then we’ve sorted through the information to find the best solutions.

Artist’s impression of Peel’s proposed Northbank East development showing the converted East Float Mills to the left.

Peel plans inspire sales Enticing new development in Cheshire Rock Court, Frodsham

East Float Mills development generates attention Peel Holdings’ planning application to regenerate and develop the Northbank East site was the subject of a presentation given to Wirral’s business community last week. Already, the proposals have generated interest among investors and homebuyers who want to be part of the waterfront’s transformation. Visitor numbers to the East Float marketing suite have increased dramatically over the course of the past few weeks and three reservations on properties there were made in the first two weeks of this month alone. The excitement surrounding the £4.6 billion proposals for the waterfront over the next 30-50 years is considerable. The Northbank East plans alone will see the creation of 1,700 homes with access to rooftop gardens, a foodstore, retail and leisure facilities in a mixed-use scheme, if consent is granted. At the East Float Mills development, Gregor Shore UK has converted a Victorian corn mill into 168 contemporary loft

style apartments. The five-storey building currently dominates the Wallasey area. Speaking of the increased interest, Russell Dickson, Gregor Shore UK’s sales director, commented: “The recent publicity surrounding Peel’s planning application at East Float has definitely caught the imagination of the local public and thrown the spotlight back onto our development. “Our sales team has been busy explaining to visitors where the proposed development is to be situated, and the profitable impact for investors in the area. “Whilst market conditions are not exactly buoyant, we are cautiously optimistic and our recent sales confirm that buyers are anticipating the Wirral Waters Masterplan might just happen sooner than expected.” Prices at the East Float Mills site start at £94, 950. The marketing suite is open from Monday to Friday from 11am until 5pm, with late nights until 7pm on Thursdays, and weekends from 10am until 4pm.

An exclusive development of new homes has been unveiled at Rock Court in Frodsham, Cheshire. Homes by Harrison Grace developers has launched the town centre properties, which include 11 town houses with three and four bedrooms, and one detached four bedroom home on High Street in Frodsham. Gordon Muir Fortune has designed the properties using bold contemporary aesthetics, and each comes with a garage and an allocated parking space, plus a substantial and private rear garden. Hand selected bricks, large windows, William Ball kitchens, and Villeroy & Boch bathrooms are indicative of

the superb specification and build quality. The town of Frodsham, which is 800 years old this year, boasts a fascinating blend of historic architecture with sophisticated bars, traditional pubs, restaurants, cafes and delicatessens. The beautiful Cheshire countryside is located on the doorstep, with Delamere Forest less than 15 minutes drive away. Prices start at an extremely competitive £299,900 for a three bedroom town house, and the immaculately furnished and decorated show home is open from Thursday to Monday, 11am to 5pm. Little town of Prescot Prescot in Knowsley is a town full of surprises. With architecture dating from the town’s clock-making days to modern apartments, and with good schools and excellent amenities, this really is a hidden gem for property hunters in the area.

Encompassing two main streets, cobbled side roads and plenty of fascinating architecture, the oldest town centre in Knowsley is a conservation area with a busy community enjoying the use of 18th and 19th century buildings, long established family run businesses, and access to the beautiful rural countryside. Just off the main road running through the town, Church Street is home to Prescot Museum, formerly Parr’s Bank. The grand building, which was once a private house for a family with servants, it retains its fireplace with an original salt box. Today, it’s a hive of cultural activity in the

borough; on the ground floor, it’s home to an exhibition entitled ‘Magical Tales,’ putting together the work of schoolchildren from across the borough. Inspired by stories they’ve read at school, the children’s creations include gingerbread men, witches, fairies and spiders, cavorting alongside a display of James’s giant peach. Every Thursday, early years sessions take place at the museum, and Sunday Fundays see craftmaking keep children entertained, just like the halfterm and holiday activities designed to capture the imagination. Storytelling as a town characteristic is perhaps reminiscent of the days when, it is believed, Shakespeare’s players performed in the long since dissipated playhouse. Prescot contains a number of other historic buildings. A

number of the houses on St. Helens Road have workshops, used for clock making from the 1700s, built onto the back of them, with typical large windows to fill the rooms with light. In the later nineteenth century, the establishment of the Lancashire Watch Company factory saw watches put together in huge numbers, taking over from the smaller workshops. By 1893, 700 employees worked at the factory, situated on Albany Road; most of them young single women, although the factory closed in 1911 due to fierce competition from the United States. As a result the flat iron building, (so called because of its unusual shape), which had been used by the company for storage, became the site of the Prescot Clock and Mechanism Company

until 1969. Today, the history of watchmaking is told in an exhibition upstairs in Prescot Museum, looking at the clock makers and their cottage workshops. The flat iron building however, has many tales of its own to tell. It was the site of the town ducking stool in medieval Prescot and the spot where the first Elizabethan theatre, outside of London, was located – and where it has been strongly suggested that Shakespeare and his players visited. Built in the 1590s by an associate of the Earls of Derby (the Stanley family) resident at Knowsley Hall, it has been put forward that some of Shakespeare’s earliest plays, including Richard III and Love’s Labour’s Lost, contain tributes to the Stanleys and were first staged in the

PRESCOT’S HIGH STREET

Prescot area. Although the recent bid for Lottery finding to revive Prescot’s theatrical past, with the regeneration project Shakespeare North at The Cockpit, was ultimately unsuccessful, the town’s culture vultures are determined not to be deterred. The campaign won support from high profile names including Sue Johnston from The Royle Family, who grew up in Prescot, and it’s hoped that it may, at some point, be revived. M.Ray’s, popularly known as Ray’s of Prescot, is a familiar landmark on the high street for visitors and locals, drawn to the eye-catching window displays and warmth of the café. Since 1924, the

family business which was started by the current managing director’s grandmother, has continued to thrive, passing on its skills to the third generation. Michele Ray employs 36 people in the craft bakery, where everything is hand made; it’s also the only bakery to have just one shop attached for miles around. The clientele range from local customers who enjoy the freshly baked bread to those who travel from surrounding areas for the hand-crafted produce. Cultural activity and long established tearooms are certainly a big draw to the area for the retired and for families, while professionals and younger couples are attracted to the chic properties with convenient access to jobs at the local hospital and neighbouring St. Helens and Liverpool. Andrew Louis, established as an estate agency in the city for 20 years, has had a long history in Prescot. Today, the agency’s staff continues to source quality family homes and apartments for professionals in the area from the Eccleston Street office. commented: “There’s a strong lettings environment here at the moment, and property is selling too – and not just repossessions. The area is good for transport links to Liverpool or St. Helens and the surrounding area, and Prescot has some good schools in the vicinity. There are also large numbers of professionals working at the local hospital, and the community’s really strong. The architecture, like the flat iron building, has real character, and it’s a very friendly place too.” At Oliver James, lettings are also buoyant. Joanne Dykins opened the agency, with its stunning red, white and black décor seven months ago. She admitted to falling in love with the area, “It’s such a close knit community for families and professionals. A terraced house could be let for around £450 pcm or an apartment at the Rainhill end might take £800 pcm. The range and variety of property is excellent here, the people are lovely and there’s a good atmosphere.” The high street’s mix of high street shops, local greengrocers, florists, bakers, hairdressers and butchers makes for a charming shopping district. While the

arcade is less busy than previously, Cables Retail Park is also just a short walk away, offering large stores and ample parking. With history and culture, shopping and restaurants on offer, Prescot really is a hidden treasure in Knowsley’s crown.

SPEAKMAN GARDENS A new development in Prescot that’s set to prove attractive is Speakman Gardens, located on Steley Way. Once complete it will comprise a collection of two bedroom apartments and three and four-bedroom homes in the heart of Prescot, with excellent access to amenities and major transport links. Advice from chartered accountants 0151 228 8977 Julia Casimo

Making ends meet! Q. I have my own house, and I am considering getting a couple of lodgers to help with my finances. Do I have to pay tax on the rent I receive?

The sales and marketing director Steve McElroy, Miller Homes North West Steve McElroy, sales and marketing director is responsible for delivering sales and completions targets throughout the year for Miller Homes North West. He also oversees promotional activities and predicts future sales. How did you get into property? I started my career as a mortgage broker and progressed naturally, dealing with purchasers’ finances and property valuations, sales and lettings. I won the role of part exchange controller at David Wilson Homes before becoming sales and marketing director at Miller in 2000. What attracted you to your current role? I had worked with Miller Homes as a consultant at first and enjoyed their willingness to let me get on with the challenges. They encouraged new ideas and they empower people to make a difference. The key to success is… …staying proactive in the current market. You need to know your customer base and what they want as well as understanding your competitors and what they are doing. Who would be your ideal dinner guests and why? Definitely Jimmy Carr, to make me laugh in the current market, business man Richard Branson to pick up the tab, and Jennifer Aniston for obvious reasons!

A. Homeowners looking to ease their finances during the ‘credit crunch’ may well like to consider the ‘rent-a-room’ scheme. This genuine tax break allows a homeowner to receive rent of up to £4250 a year tax free by letting out a room in their home. There are several important provisos. • The scheme can only be used by individuals, or couples. • It only applies to furnished accommodation • The scheme can only be used for residential letting, meaning that you cannot let part of your home as office/commercial accommodation • The relief is per property, not per person, so if the house is jointly owned the tax free amount does not double. • You must claim the relief by completing a self assessment tax return. Q. I was thinking of charging more than £4250 a year in total. What happens then? A. Then you have a choice. You can either account for all your income and expenses, and pay tax on the profit, or you can pay tax on any excess over the £4250. Let’s say you income is £5000 and your expenses are £1000. Your choice is Pay tax on income of £5000 less expenses of £1000, i.e. pay tax on £4000 Or Pay tax on £5000 of rent less the ‘rent-a-room’ fixed deduction of £4250, i.e. pay tax on £750. The best choice will obviously depend on your individual position. This can be a very useful tax break. As always, good advice will be essential.

As with many decisions you really do need to take independent financial and tax advice. //// YOUR VIEWS ON BIG ISSUES

“No, quite the opposite. I can’t see any good reason for doing this, it can only be detrimental to trade within the city at a time when we should be doing all we can to encourage people into Liverpool.”

Andrew Collinge owner, Andrew Collinge hair salons

“No. When we first opened 10 years ago, parking was free. Pay and Display crept in and now we always have people asking how long they’ll get on the metre. With free parking after 6pm, people come in early, pay until 6pm and then enjoy shopping, eating out and visiting the theatres. If they can’t do that any longer, then trade will suffer and they’ll look elsewhere.”

“No. I’ve made it clear to senior councillors and Warren Bradley himself that we think it’s nuts. We all understand that 2008 was wonderfully successful and that did not come for nothing, but this is undoing all the good of 08, instead of simply helping to pay for it.”

Should we pay for parking after 6pm? Should the council be extending the evening charge to park in the city centre at the expense of retail and leisure?

Colin Manning co-owner 60 Hope Street, The Quarter, and HoSt restaurants

Jack Stopforth CEO, Liverpool Chamber of Commerce

“No. Parking in this city is always a controversial topic. Increasing the parking charge is just going to add to the costs for a night out in the city centre and may make audiences think twice. It’s certainly not going to help develop the night time cultural economy, especially after such a successful year in 2008.”

“No. It’s certainly not going to be very pleasant for business managers who’ll need to explain to their clients that, even if they’re coming into Liverpool after 6pm – for one of our open evenings for instance – that they’ll need to pay for parking, unlike almost every other city.”

Q&A With Joanne Ball, Solicitor Q I made my will during the 1970s. Since then my circumstances have changed and some of the people I left money to have already passed away. Is it necessary to use a

Solicitor to make a will? A As you have identified, it would seem that your will is out of date. This is not just because of the time which has passed since the will was made but because some of the beneficiaries (the people who you chose to benefit) have died before you. It is important to ensure that your will is up to date otherwise it might not be worth having one in the first place. An out of date will could lead to problems after your death and your wishes may be disregarded e.g. You may have separated from an ex-partner and they may now be living with somebody else; you may have married or entered into a registered civil partnership which may make any former will invalid (unless it was made under special circumstances). If you die without a valid will then your estate is governed by the intestacy provisions. At present, if you are married (or in a civil partnership) and have children, the spouse/civil partner only receives the first £125,000 of the assets held in your sole name outright. This may not be appropriate. There may also have been tax changes which you or your estate could benefit from of which you are not aware. Such provisions may need to be incorporated within your will. As to whether or not you choose to use a solicitor is a choice for you. However, there are a number of pitfalls which could be a problem for the unwary, eg. • Being unaware of the requirements needed to make a will • Being unaware of potential claims which can be made against the estate after death and finding ways to counteract against them • Being unaware of the Inheritance Tax situation and paying tax when this could have been avoided I would stress that there are certain situations when it is important to involve a solicitor, but it is a question of choice. Resolving mistakes and disputes after death may result in unnecessary legal costs and delay, and, even worse, those who you believed would benefit might not! Movers Why did you choose this property? The location is close to my parents and not far from Danny’s, and it’s near to the city centre. How is it laid out? It’s all on the one level and is fairly open plan with a combined kitchen and living area. We’ve got a main bathroom, and the master bedroom has an en-suite. What’s your theme? We’re sticking with the neutral palette for now, but I want to decorate the master bedroom in either white and black or white and turquoise. Everything else is shades of cream and neutrals at the moment, with a cream carpet running right the way through and white walls.

What about the kitchen? We’ve got a wood effect lino floor and all fitted units in pine. I’m going shopping for a bistro style table and chairs so that we can eat out there too.

Jemma May, a tax advisor, and Danny Haigh, who’s also 24, have just purchased a two bedroom apartment at Miller Homes’ Connaught Green development in Anfield on the MiWay scheme, paying 75 per cent of the price now, and 25 per cent later.

And in the bathroom? We’ve got a white suite and the shower area is tiled, but eventually I’d like the whole room to be tiled. What’s your next purchase? We need a TV stand and I’d like a glass or mirrored one. The couch was really on the wish list and I’m really glad we decided to get it. I’m just looking forward to settling in now and then going shopping for the rest!

What’s in the living area? We’ve just bought a cream leather couch and a chair, and we’ve got some modern side tables. I also found a mirrored glass coffee table on E-bay which is really different and I love it. We’ve got some mirrors in chrome frames to put up but we’re still looking for pictures and other furniture – we just need to settle in a bit more first.

Take us upstairs… The master bedroom has white wooden, mirrored wardrobes and we’ve got a white leather bed. In the spare room we’ve got a guest bed and we’ll be moving the computer in there. I’m thinking of keeping that in neutral colours, but perhaps adding some sparkle paint over the cream walls.

Cathy Tyson Interview //// TALENT IN THE CITY

Cathy Tyson is known for a wealth of stirring performances on screen and on stage, and she returns to Liverpool in March with a new voice in The Vagina Monologues at the Empire Theatre.

Fearless female What attracted you to this play? I first did this play a long time ago and really enjoyed it, and there was a massive appeal to come back to Liverpool to work again as well of course. I like to revisit something again, and to improve upon it. We’ve been working on our own to learn our pieces and in March we’ll start to join up and work together within the cast to refine it. I love to hear the audience’s response and it’s always fascinating to see their reactions. You were back in Liverpool for the Nativity at the end of 2007. How do you think the city has changed, and has this been beneficial to the arts? It was absolutely fantastic to be back here. Everyone was so excited about it. We had a massive team come up for the outside broadcast – about 350 people – and it was all for one night. I was ecstatic but then 52 Your Move

in other ways it was almost hard as it was all going to happen just once and I was determined to enjoy every part of it. Theatre here is so different to London, where just because of the sheer size of the city you can go and see something different every night. Liverpool has always been musically inclined though and it’s always innovative. You’re well known for your long-running role in Grange Hill as deputy headmistress Miss Gayle. Do you prefer TV or the stage as a medium? I like the nerves of being on stage and being in the moment and the interaction with the audience; I don’t think I’ve learnt to interact nearly enough. It’s always completely different to when you’re learning a part and memorising it and thinking, ‘they might find that funny’. In film, because you don’t need

to project and the camera can capture subtleties, it can be more soulful. In theatre, it’s the physical performance which takes over. As an actor, it’s very difficult to switch between the two ways of working sometimes. Are there any TV dramas you’ve done which you felt were really new and different? Band of Gold, definitely. But I’ve enjoyed every job, every single job I’ve had. I get so excited about it that every time I get a job I think it’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me. I need to learn how to differentiate I think! Sometimes I’ve been praised for things when I haven’t felt like I’ve done the best job, and I’ll want to improve it, but I think that that’s maybe what it’s about: doing the best I can for others to enjoy and to decide. Mona Lisa brought you fame at 20. Is there a particular role that has had a major impact on your career? That did bring me fame but I still would love to play Cleopatra, and I feel, nearly, ready to do that. I really do believe that you can do whatever you want and that there’s no one stopping you. Sometimes people want to view you a certain way, but we all have so many facets to our characters; we’re not the same all the time, any of us. The fact that we change so much from day to day shows us how alike we all really are. It’s difficult to define an actor; we’re always taking risks and changing. In my last performance in Eighteen Hundred Acres I had to go naked, and I haven’t got a perfect body, but I did it. I’m getting older and getting bolder, and I wonder what I’ll do next. Cleopatra died when she was 38, younger than me, although back then that was like being about 60.

Where did you train in Liverpool? I went to St Winifred’s school, which isn’t there now, and we had three hours of drama lessons every Friday. After I left I went to the Rathbone Theatre Workshop for a year before going onto Mabel Fletcher Technical College, and then I started to work in London and at the RSC. Who inspired you when you were growing up to want to act? My mum was always reading poetry and the drama lessons at school really whetted my appetite. I’m not good behind a desk, and the improvisation workshops helped me to see how to learn in a different way. In the classroom or in sports you always had to win, but in drama you just had to participate. I really am grateful to my school for showing me that. In one of the first plays I did I was a sergeant, with a moustache – it was a one act play called The Monkey’s Paw – and I had this realisation during the performance; all of the rowdy girls who were usually noisy throughout assembly were all sitting quietly. I’m not saying it was brilliant or anything, but you could definitely see the magic of theatre, and that was really when the penny dropped for me. What are your ambitions for the future? Eventually I want to do some of my own writing. After The Vagina Monologues though I’ll be going to Ethiopia to make a short charity film for a week, and I’m really looking forward to that. Which role are you most proud of, and why? That is always such a hard question to answer as every job is different from the last one. I don’t think I’m proud of or pleased with anything I’ve done yet, but hopefully I’ll get there.

Natural Handles

With over 10 years experience in the interior design business, Sharon Armor is poised to answer all your design queries from DIY disasters to decorating dilemmas.

I’m planning a new look for my kitchen and have already painted my kitchen units white. I’m now thinking about changing the handles on the doors. At the moment they are made from brushed steel, but I would prefer a more natural looking handle; do you have any suggestions as to what could work? I would like to use something really unusual. Chloe Alberry specialises in door handles, cabinet fittings and hooks. They have a fantastic website and on-line shop, making it really easy to purchase their products. It’s definitely worth taking a look. The exotic mediums that she has used in her new collections include obsidian, a naturally occurring volcanic glass, mother of pearl and a brilliant array of river and sea pebbles. The pebbles look fantastic and are very unusual, as each one is so different; the size, shape and colour varies, and this only adds to their individuality.

Safe Stairways I have hardwood floors in my new home. They look great, but the stairs seems really slippery for my two youngest children, and I’m scared they are going to fall and hurt themselves. Do you have any suggestions that could prevent future accidents? I would invest in a stair runner; they come in many different styles, colours, widths and thicknesses. As well as eliminating much of the slipperiness problem, it will provide you with a unique look to your stairway and make it much cosier for your family. The stair runner is also a great idea for protecting your floor from the constant scrapes and scratches that simply walking up and down the stairs on a daily basis will cause. I would get a professional fitter to fit the carpet as you may also need to purchase stir rods to keep the carpet in place, these rods are usually fitted into the wooden stairs, and Blenheim carpets have a wonderful collection that you may want to take a look at.

Sculpted Shelving We would like to purchase some shelving for the lounge, but are really confused with all the different options in the shops, what would you consider to be the best form of shelving?

Quick links Chloe Alberry www.chloealberry.com Blenheim carpets www.blenheim-carpets.com

The type of shelving you choose really should depend on what you would like to display and how long you are planning to stay in your home. Architectural storage, allowing for shelving that can be designed and built bespoke, can be designed to suit your own individual needs. If the items you want to display are really interesting, then a unit which is neutral in colour would allow the eyes to look at the objects more easily. If it’s a statement piece that you want, look at shelving that has a sculptural form such as a geometric pattern and vivid colour.

Keep your feathered friends as frequent visitors to your garden over the winter months.

Feed the birds in your garden and keep their feathers healthy and glossy by preparing a fat block to put out in a wire cage or mashed onto a pine cone, hanging from a tree branch. Melt a cup of suet on a low heat and pour it over a mixture of four cups

A glass menagerie

A recent survey from Alliance & Leicester found that 45 per cent of homeowners believe a warm and cosy conservatory would make them appreciate their ‘outside space’ more during the colder months. To get the most out of yours, now’s the time to look at any maintenance that needs doing. Check the sealant in between the glass panes is working to prevent any leaks or drips from spoiling the floor, and repair faulty hinges or locks. Finally, give your panes a good clean with a little water or diluted washing up liquid, and buff with an E-Cloth, to see the spring sunlight stream in.

Remember Saturday morning’s Swap Shop? With sidekicks Keith Chegwin and Maggie Philbin, Noel Edmunds took calls from kids around the country wanting to swap Cindy dolls for Spacehoppers. Now, 25 years later, the idea behind Swap Shop is quietly evolving on the internet. Gumtree, Freecycle, Homerecycling are all websites inviting users to proclaim what it is they want and offer something in return. Although used nationally, each website develops local forums and groups, responding to the needs of users. There are sites for clothes swappers, as well as sites giving advice on how to recycle something like old and broken furniture, for example, that nobody is going to want as a ‘swap’. Good advice before signing up is to have something to offer before requesting an item. And be aware of the risk of swapping for things that you don’t really need; one swapper convinced himself that he really did need a spiral staircase (in his small terraced house) just to get rid of his son’s old hamster mansion… To start off, visit: www.freecycle.org, www.homrecycling.co.uk and www.gumtree.com. www.bigwardrobe.com allows users to sell clothes or swap them for free.

Celebration lounge launches

Public’s design choice

Herbert relaxes in Champu

Whilst judges are deciding upon a winning design for the Royal Court, you can also cast an artistic eye over the architectural submissions.

Champu opens for business at Beetham Plaza. And where else but Liverpool could the world’s first champagne celebration lounge, complete with music, flowers and all things glamorous, really have been dreamt up? The brainchild of celebrity hairdresser, Herbert, Champu oozes romance and opulence. The design is spectacular – animal print furniture adorns the room, which is lit beautifully by Swarovski crystal - as is the service, with drinks served by French sommeliers and entertainment from a stable of fantastic solo pianists.

For guests who have a dinner date somewhere else in town there is a complimentary chauffeur driven limousine (to pick up and drop off) as well as complimentary gifts, fresh roses and chocolate covered strawberries. Herbert, who worked with Perrier Jouet and Laurent Perrier Champagnes in establishing Champu, said: “This is a unique new concept for any special occasion, such as birthdays, anniversaries and career promotion. “I envisage my concept

travelling, and establishing itself around Great Britain, where we hope to open another ten Champu celebration lounges.” Champu opens for private corporate events from 1 - 4pm and Monday to Saturday, between 5pm - midnight. From 5 - 6.30pm each evening, a complementary finger buffet is also available. Herbert added, “I want my guests to celebrate their special occasions in style, and experience a truly memorable evening.’

RIBA's Architruck Seven designs, which have been short listed for the multimillion pound restoration and updating of the art-deco building, are on display at St George’s Plateau until 27 February. The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has brought its own user-friendly van, Architruck, to Liverpool so that members of the public can become involved in the regeneration project and submit feedback. Some of the issues that will be taken into account when choosing a winning design include access, improved facilities and preserving the identity and character of the theatre, which was built in 1938. Among the final seven designs are entries from two Liverpool firms: Union North Architects and Studio Three Architects; and the costs of the project are estimated to come in at between £5m and £10m. A representative for the Royal Court said that there was no timetable for works to begin, and that much will depend on how long it takes to raise the money. Your Move 63

Table Talk //// MARYA MCCANN INTERVIEWS ANGIE JAMES AT IL CAFÉ DELI

The pace of Angie James’ working week must be hard to keep up with: there are her two salons, which she manages with husband, Neil, the Italian deli attached to the Whitechapel branch, run by Italian barista, Antonio, and the active role she still has in the trade she began as a Saturday girl, washing hair and brushing the floor. I had a glimpse of her schedule as soon as I arrived at Il Café Deli, adjoining the city centre salon. She smoothly transferred from a planning meeting at one table to join me for lunch. Angie feels really lucky to have a job she still looks forward to, and credits her father with the encouragement that channelled her artistic flair. She said: “My dad was a joiner, and a real craftsman; he recognised that I had a similar talent for making things.” Hairdressing, then, allowed Angie to combine her love of fashion with creativity. As we enjoyed a coffee - the deli serves Italy’s finest and established brand, Vergnano, Angie gave me a whistle-stop tour of an earlier life in sunnier climes: “First stop on our adventures was me cutting hair

in a little salon in Gran Canaria whilst Neil worked three jobs.” It was a combination of determination, talent and good timing that provided the couple with a major break. Said Angie: “To update my skills when we returned from traveling, I trained at Toni & Guy in London. I was offered a job and in time asked Toni about opening a franchise in Liverpool. “He was sceptical but on the day he finally visited, town was busy and full of really glamorous Liverpool girls.” Angie became the first woman to take up a Toni & Guy franchise and has since built up a client list including local and international celebrities, before winning the North West Hairdresser Award in 2006. On her recommendation Angie eats here at Il Café Deli throughout the week - we had lasagne and shared a plate of Antonio’s vegetable pasta. Cherry tomatoes, Feta, red onion and peppers drizzled with oils accompanied the lasagne, which was surprisingly light and covered in a fluffy béchamel sauce. The vegetable pasta was flavoured with pesto

and darted with tiny shreds of mushroom. As a role model it is clear that Angie inspires people. Over half of her original staff have gone on to open salons and she is mindful that flexible working conditions (especially for parents of school-aged children) generate loyalty and empowerment. She also spends time visiting prisons to talk about her own background and offer advice about training opportunities. Angie persuaded me to taste the deli’s classic lemon cheesecake and a coffee sponge (both went perfectly with more coffee) and told me that life outside of work consists of spending as much time as possible with daughters, Holly (9) and Lydia (7). I couldn’t resist asking if she ever leaves her skills in the salon. “I am always looking at faces and colouring, and I usually end up doing somebody’s hair when we go on holiday,” she laughed. Kate Winslet, Salma Hayek and Cheryl Cole would be especially welcome when I asked her which famous heads she would like to dress.

TO SEE THE BRAND NEW PRODUCTION OF

Aida or Turandot AT THE LIVERPOOL EMPIRE

This tragic love story is brought to life in a production set against one of the greatest pieces of music Verdi ever wrote with the well known arias ‘Celeste Aida’, ‘Ritorna Vincitor’ and the great chorus piece the ‘Triumphal March’. This new version of Aida symbolises the powerful religious hold of the priests of Egypt and includes

dance sequences based on the ancient temple dancers. Ellen Kent presents Turandot in celebration of Pavarotti’s life highlighting the unforgettable aria ‘Nessun Dorma’. Ellen Kent was inspired in 1993 to produce her first opera by Pavarotti’s performance at the 1990 World Cup which opened up opera to the masses. In Turandot ancient China is brought to life with the Terracotta Army gazing down from Will Bowen’s set in this epic production. Turandot is the story of the cold-hearted princess, who is surrounded by suitors facing death if they fail to answer her riddle correctly, and the one man who can melt the ice in her heart.

Hair Liverpool THE POM BY TONI&GUY

London With fashion week looming we’ve got a busy few weeks ahead in the salons. Everyone knows that a head turning mane is an essential fashion accessory and showtime for us can mean creating hair for up to 25 London fashion week shows, but as well as working our magic backstage we then have to ensure our loyal cliental get their share of the “action”. Hair is RED hot this season and with only 4% of us being natural Celtic beauties we’ll have to fake it to achieve a statement colour. The Pom This look is inspired by the iconic model Twiggy and actresses Mia Farrow and Julia Andrews. Short hair can be graphic but still an elegant, feminine alternative, the colour is very this season. Who would it suit? This is a very rich pallet of colour including shades of strawberry ruby rose and fizzy sorbet. If you’ve never gone red then this is the season to try it. There’s definitely an element of cheekiness and humour, and red hair always exudes confidence. People often say red hair is addictive so be warned!

Rachael works this cosy winter look effortlessly with chunky jumper dress and cute hat, both from Gap. Patent boots certainly give it an edge.

We love Lynsey’s mix of fashion essentials such as scarf from Quiggins, her coat from River Island, fringe boots from New Look, and black satin shift dress from Morgan.

Clearly a fan of labels, Karen’s outfit included pieces by Christian Dior, Rock & Republic, Twill 22, Gustto and Mark Mason. A winter look with a designer twist.

Who in the public eye always gets it right? “Gwen Stefani as she’s so funky, her L.A.M.B fashion label is very cool.”

Food and Drink //// EASTERN DELIGHTS IN THE CITY

Go East Marya McCann samples Thai cooking on Lark Lane

Other great places to eat, inspired by the East: MAHARAJA 34-36 LONDON ROAD, LIVERPOOL Tel: 0151 709 2006

CHILLI BANANA 2 Lark Lane, Liverpool, L17 8US 0151 726 8641 www.chillibanana.co.uk

It’s a long time since I have been to Chilli Banana. Then, it was full every night and buzzing with the vibe of being new kid on the block. But with so many new restaurants opening on Lark Lane since I expected diners to be in short supply. I was surprised to find it busy in the afternoon. There were groups of workers taking late lunches, families with small children and couples grabbing an intimate chat whilst they ate. On the tapas menu, which is ideal at lunch time and for new diners who can’t decide from the immense choice on offer, the restaurant has retained its core Thai favourites (spicy fish cakes, spring rolls, lightly battered vegetables and prawns) but added new versions of dishes which are also, presumably, served as mains in the evening. There is also a captivating selection of teas, served in beautiful hand decorated China tea pots, for which a visit is worth alone. All are priced at £2.35 and the selection includes Jasmine Imperial, which is stated on the menu as being the ‘champagne of green teas’ and Elephant, a white tea regarded

as widely superior to Earl Grey. We finally settled on five dishes and three types of tea…we have big appetites, and had had no breakfast. Satay Gai (2 skewers of marinated Lancashire chicken served with peanut sauce and cucumber pickle) and Satay Moo (skewers of marinated Lancashire farm reared pork served in the same way - both £3.25) assured us that the restaurant uses locally sourced meat. From both the seafood and vegetarian sections, Yam Pla Grob (a crispy whitebait spicy salad £3.50) and Tempura Pak (mixed vegetables in tempura batter with sweet chilli and soy dipping sauce £2.75) Finally, steamed jasmine rice (Kow), completed the plate. The style of cooking here is like a more intense and vibrant cousin of the better-known version of Thai food. Rather than light fragrances, with only faint traces of the lemongrass or garlic within the dish, here the tastes and colours are quite strong and spicy. The peanut sauce which accompanied the pork and chicken seems to be a good example of the restaurant’s take on Thai food. Much like the

coconut based curries, the texture is heavier and flavours bolder; the food at Chilli Banana is certainly not subtle. Each dish was colourful and garnished with shards of chilli and spring onion with a vivid purple flower - fashioned from beetroot - as a centrepiece. A slight criticism would be the portion size, though, barely enough for two to share comfortably. My favourite dish was the whitebait salad, fried lightly enough to preserve the natural crunchiness of the fish. With the spicy salad, the flavours were a really welcome alternative to the usual salt and vinegar taste that you expect from whitebait. Good service is always worth mentioning and here too the restaurant has developed a really well-organised and friendly approach; a small number of staff to a busy room of diners who are all served with a smile. Our lunch order was taken, served, enjoyed and paid for all within an hour. Whilst sometimes you may want a leisurely lunch, when you’re looking for swift and welcoming, this place really delivers.

This restaurant has become quite famous for its authentic Keralese cooking. Many of the dishes are made using family recipes which have been handed down for generations and use a unique combination of herbs and spices. There is more emphasis on steaming methods and breads made with potato and rice flour than in traditional Indian restaurants.

ETSU 25 THE STRAND, LIVERPOOL Tel: 0151 236 7530 Here you will be able to sample fresh sushi as well as cooked rice and noodle dishes prepared by authentic Japanese chefs. Lovely sauces and a menu which is especially geared towards fish lovers. For a good way to try a selection of sushi there is a set meal of seven varieties, enough for two or three people to share.

HoST HOPE STREET, LIVERPOOL Tel: 0151 708 5831 A true cultural feast has arrived at the Georgian Quarter under the expertise of the men behind 60 Hope Street’s success story. The eclectic Asian menu mixes Thai, Chinese, Japanese, Indian and Malaysian cuisine, with subtle curries, fragrant jasmine rice and Tiger and Asahi beers to wash it down. Your Move 79

Previews //// THEATRE, FILM AND MUSIC IN LIVERPOOL

Live music in Liverpool

Woody Allen’s new comedy Vicky Christina Barcelona Woody Allen’s latest comedy drama ponders the nature of love and romance against the backdrop of the stunning European city of Barcelona. Vicky (Rebecca Hall) is a modern, middle-class girl; she’s getting married, she’s getting her Master’s degree and she’s moving out of the city to start a family. Her life is structured, stable and well functioning, unlike her best friend Cristina, (Scarlett Johansson) by contrast, a lost soul. When the pair decide to spend a summer in Barcelona their paths cross with the dishy Juan Antonio (Javier Bardem), everything Vicky

despises in a man and everything Cristina adores. Cue the arrival of Maria Elena (Penelope Cruz), Juan Antonio’s fiery ex-wife and the scene is set for an explosive, fiery and passionate summer. Johansson, frequently described as Allen’s muse, gives a vivid portrayal of a free spirited girl who just wants to fall in love. Rebecca Hall’s performance of a girl who has everything but somehow wants more, is second to none and wins the audience’s sympathy. Spanish actor Bardem makes the perfect European totty, but it’s the arrival of Penelope Cruz

that really sets this film alight. Switching between Spanish and English, untamed passion and chilly despair, Cruz is at her finest. Whether she's planting kisses on Johansson or letting us into her own secret pain, Cruz gives a wild, erotic, quickwitted, and touching performance. The voiceover throughout gives the film, which is funny, sexy and moving, a fairy-tale feel. This is definitely not to be missed. Anna Cuthbertson reviewed Vicky Christina Barcelona after seeing it at the FACT Picturehouse on Wood Street.

The Liverpool Arena plays host to a number of excellent gigs this season. Lionel Richie's success story over nearly 30 years is the stuff of legends and one few artists can match: he's sold over 100 million albums; he's won countless awards including an Oscar, a Golden Globe, a staggering five Grammy Awards and the Crystal Award for Humanitarianism. Lionel's 2009 Tour will give fans a chance to experience first hand his extraordinary new album and also his incredible back catalogue on 7 April. On 19 May, Girls Aloud arrive with their

Great Expectations Liverpool Playhouse 24 - 28 March

A new musical version of a classic Dickens tale is raising expectations among Liverpool’s literary crowds. The Playhouse will be welcoming a West Endacclaimed cast in March who’ll be performing ‘Great Expectations’ with a new adaptation by director, Theatre Clwyd’s associate director, Tim Baker. New compositions and live music are on the bill, with a performance from Steffan Rhodri as Joe Gargery – perhaps best

known as Dave Coaches in TV’s ‘Gavin and Stacey’. The orphan Pip’s journey from youth to manhood is a stirring tale which looks at the choices available in Dickens’ society and the concept of social mobility. Olivier Award-nominated Liverpudlian actor Graham Bickley, known for his role as Joey Boswell in ‘Bread’, will play the escaped convict Magwitch, who receives food and water from the young protagonist in secret at the novel’s opening. West End actress Vivien Parry plays the jilted, shrewish recluse, Miss Haversham, who invites Pip, destined for a blacksmith’s apprenticeship, to become a companion for her young ward Estella. When Pip must take later take up this role, he is unhappy, but on discovering he

has inherited an estate he sets off for London, to train as a gentleman. For many years he believes that Miss Haversham is his anonymous benefactress until, estranged from his uncle, he discovers his education has been paid for in a way he never expected… This tale of raised expectations, society’s constraints and following a vocation poses more questions than it answers, appealing to the postmodern sensitivity, and it will be interesting to see this new musical version’s take on an old but enduring tale. Great Expectations is at the Liverpool Playhouse from 24 - 28 March at 7.30pm. Matinees are at 1.30pm on 26 March and 28 March at 2pm.

widely anticipated ‘Out of Control’ show celebrating the success of their sixth album. At the Liverpool Philharmonic, Russell Watson is certain to entertain on 30 March with his spring tour, and 6 May sees the winners of ‘Last Choir Standing’, Only Men Aloud, take to the stage. My Favourite //// CONNIE LUSH - BLUES SINGER

Connie Lush is one of the UK’s and Europe’s most loved blues singers. Her passion for the blues is reflected in her song writing and dynamic live performances, and her accolades include Best UK Female Vocalist and European Singer of the Year to name just a few. Connie is due to appear in Liverpool on 21 March at St. George’s Hall and is bringing her live show to Baby Blue at the Albert Dock on 14 June.

Film It has to be The Wizard of Oz as it brings back lovely childhood memories! Plus I adore Judy Garland and there are so many different things to take from the film. I still get caught up in it and it still makes me cry in parts! Support act Ideally I’d love to join John Lee Hooker on stage! So much of his work is so dark and it’s an interesting element of his music. I supported his son when on tour a while back and it was an amazing experience. He looks just like his dad but his music is very different. Book I enjoyed ‘Love in the Time of Cholera’ and feel it brings out my intellectual side but John Connolly’s book ‘Bad Things’ is also great. It’s a deep thriller focussing on darkness and evil, really gripping! Pub in Liverpool I’m a real pub girl; we frequent The Lion near Moorfields. They have some great whiskey tasting nights there and the atmosphere is always great. Album Corinne Bailey Rae’s debut album is great. I really like the track ‘Put your 86 Your Move

Records On’. It’s so chirpy and upbeat and I play it a lot at home when I’m chilling out. Thing to do to relax Watching old movies always relaxes me. Black and white films about strong women are great to get lost in, especially Bette Davis. Gig It would have to be when I played in Moscow for two nights last November. The experience still hasn’t left me. The atmosphere was electric and the people were lovely. Champagne and caviar were served which was fantastic.

Holiday destination I went to Egypt a while back and found it fascinating. I’d love to see The Karnak Temples again. Venue Baby Blue is always good. I’m doing a gig there in June called The Live Lounge which will be exciting. Also, St. George’s Hall is great as it’s so well known and I’ll be playing there at The Spring Ball on 21 March accompanied by a full orchestra.
