E D A a C E D G N I CELEBRAT in development The sixth annual Your Move Property Awards 2009 took place in the centre of the city’s landmark new development, the Hilton hotel at Liverpool One. Celebrating ten years of the magazine, and a decade in property across the city, this year’s event brought together developers and agents, investors and housing associations, to celebrate the achievements made in a particularly testing year. A fitting venue to celebrate the hard work of those in the industry over the past year, the Hilton hotel’s position overlooking the waterfront from the newly revamped shopping district confirmed Liverpool’s growing confidence in its appeal to investors, and to those who live and work here. Stunning red-themed Christmas interiors worked well with the Your Move branding red and black dress code, and lit up the reception area and the candlelit dining tables. Esther McVey welcomed guests and introduced a special presentation of 28 Your Move
photography, supplied by McCoy Wynne, in a five-minute showreel entitled A Decade of Development. The music and visuals portrayed the changes to the face of the cityscape over the last ten years – consistent with the magazine’s lifetime, chronicling developments in the property sector. After a three course meal, Esther invited Paul Harris, managing director at Ashbury Homes, this year’s main sponsor, to introduce the presentations. In judging the awards, an independent panel of four judges from the property sector in Liverpool met
on a number of occasions to discuss the various categories. Their meetings saw lengthy consideration of the applications submitted, with site visits and further meetings before unanimous decisions were made. For the categories of Best Estate Agent for Customer Service, Best Letting Agent for Customer Service, and Best Property Website, an independent mystery shopping firm conducted extensive research before presenting their findings.

Esther McVey clarified that this award took into account not just the price of the property to move into, but the continuing living costs. The winner announced was Sevenoaks, a joint partnership between NewHeartlands, Lovell and Riverside. St Paul’s Square by Muse and English Cities Fund was awarded a Runner Up certificate. Carol Lavender, director of Riverside Home Ownership, commented: “Building on our success at the Housing Excellence Awards, when Riverside was crowned Social Landlord of the Year, we are delighted to be able to add two more accolades to our portfolio.”
The award for Best Estate Agency for Customer Service was presented by Paul Bibby of MSB Solicitors. Sutton Kersh city centre branch came in third place, with King Sturge in second and Andrew Louis as winner.
Best Property Website was presented by Matt Ellsgood, head of sales at Riverside, to Andrew Louis. Erica Mooney collected the award and said: “This is all down to the hard work of our managing director Louis Anastasiou over the last 12 months.” In second place came Sutton Kersh, and in third place Belvoir.
The award for Best Letting Agency for Customer Service was presented by Maria Colleran of Lets Support to King Sturge, with Keppie Massie second and Andrew Louis third. Martyn Green, collecting the award, said: “I said at this event last year, that if we were here now and still trading then we would have done very, very well, and that applies to everyone in this room. Congratulations to you all – and to Lynsey and her team for all their efforts well done.”

They visited a number of branches of estate and lettings agents before making their decision. This involved mystery shop visits and telephone calls, and followed through the early stages of viewing properties to buy and to let. The mystery shoppers contacted several members of staff at the various branches, and conducted their research independently over the course of three months. The award for Best Property Law Firm was presented by Patrick Crean, director of PSG Liverpool, to MSB Solicitors, with JST

A Joint Runner Up was awarded to The Triangles by NewHeartlands and the Daneville Transformation by Liverpool Mutual Homes, with a special recognition of these schemes’ utilization of existing housing stock and the resulting benefits for the environment. The winner was Kensington Square, by Lovell and Riverside, who thanked their partners, the city council and the Housing Market Renewal Initiative.

The shortlist also included the ambitious and visionary project, Stella Nova by Dreaming Spires, and the prestigious and beautiful development, Ashbury Brook by Ashbury.
The award for the Best Commercial Scheme was presented by Stuart Keppie, partner at Keppie Massie Commercial. In the shortlist were the Hope Street Hotel, the Port of Liverpool Building by Downing and the IC2, Liverpool Science Park. A special Runner Up prize was awarded to Downing, for the Port of Liverpool building’s extensive refurbishment which, in the judges’ words, has safeguarded a landmark building for future generations. The winner was announced as Liverpool Science Park, and thanks were given by the prizewinners to the NWDA, the Metropolitan Cathedral, and universities for their support. The judges’ were said to have been particularly impressed by the building’s BREAM excellent rating.

She began to introduce the winner by referring to comments made by the judging panel for this award, referring to how the firm began developing 10 years ago with Queens Square, took a leap of faith in Liverpool Airport, attracted public money into the city and generated interest and attention, and are now about to, in the
judging panel’s words, “blow us away with another massive project”. The winner was announced as Steve Parry, of Neptune Developments, currently working on a massive regeneration mixed-use project in New Brighton and at Mann Island. Steve said: “First of all, I must just say how shocked and surprised I am to win this award, as we are just happy to have been able to survive the recent downturn and to still be here and able to deliver on our projects. The building society has revealed property prices are now rising steadily, with the average cost of a house in the UK at £162,764 – 2.7 per cent higher than the same time last year. The current average price is now similar to prices in early 2006. Nationwide has put the increase down to the stabilisation of the jobs market. Chief economist Martin Gahbauer commented: “Despite continued uncertainties about the future, the better than expected performance of the labour market has probably contributed to the surprise rebound in house prices this year. Even though workers who have been forced from fulltime employment into part-time work will have experienced a reduction in income, the impact has been less severe than it would have been if they had lost their jobs completely. Together with the fact that mortgage rates have fallen sharply as a result of base rate cuts, this has meant that far fewer borrowers have fallen into arrears than would normally be the case in such a deep recession.”

Liverpool demolition specialists the MEES Group has teamed up with local children’s charity KIND to help support their Christmas Appeal. Liverpool FC assistant manager Sammy Lee helped to launch the 2009 KIND Christmas Appeal at the charities award winning Seed Centre. MEES has sponsored the 2010 KIND Calendar and made them their 2010 charity of the year.
Featuring some of the UK’s best loved children’s cartoon characters, the calendar will appear on the walls of 5000 local homes and businesses across Merseyside in 2010. All money raised from the sale of the calendar will go directly towards the appeal to help disadvantaged children across the region. Sammy Lee commented: “We all have a

Movers What drew you to your new home? Even though it’s a modern apartment it still has all the original features of the building. Also, because it’s a duplex, there’s quite a bit of space, and it’s brilliant being based in the city centre.
Take us upstairs... The bedroom has cream walls and cream carpets consistent with the rest of the apartment. We have kept it pretty simple, with canvas furniture for storage. What about the bathrooms? Again, the bathrooms are finished with cream tiles and units. There is a shower in the en-suite and a full bath suite in the master bathroom.
What’s the layout? Downstairs there’s a spare bedroom, a master bathroom, kitchen and spacious living room. Upstairs we have the master bedroom with en-suite. Tell us about the living room. There are really big windows which I love as they let in lots of natural light. I would have to say the living room is my favourite room in the property, even though it’s still pretty bare at the moment. We’re still a bit jumbled up with the move so we’ve not really had a chance to put all of our finishing touches to it yet but we’ve just had Sky installed and set our computer up in there, so the room is certainly well used.
What’s your favourite item in the property? That would have to be the brown leather couch in the living room. It’s just about the comfiest couch ever.
Laura Davies and boyfriend Richard Starkie, both 22, recently moved to a luxury duplex apartment in the historic Albany building on Old Hall Street. The couple, who work for Littlewoods in Liverpool, are currently putting the finishing touches to their dream home.
Any plans for the spare room? It will eventually be a guest room but at the moment we’ve got all of our stuff in there! My boyfriend is a DJ so he would probably want to turn the spare room into a studio. I’m sure he would want to do that anyway but we wouldn’t be able to soundproof it or anything!
What about the kitchen? The kitchen is all really modern and it’s easily big enough for our needs. We have dark brown wooden units, black worktops and grey tiles, which I’m really pleased with. My pride and joy would have to be the Smeg fridge and some quirky kitchen accessories.

From Friends to The Simpsons, The Fonz, uber-cool protagonist of ‘70s show Happy Days, has been referenced in pretty much every TV series you could care to mention. Henry Winkler, the man behind one of the world’s most popular characters, will be leaving the leather jacket and Harley Davidson at home as he takes on the role of Captain Hook this Christmas at the Liverpool Empire. Your Move found Henry in rare form as he began rehearsals. Are you looking forward to filling Captain Hook’s boots once more? This is my fourth time as Captain Hook and I found that there really is no better part in pantomime. In Cinderella I would be the king, and he says about three lines. Here I get to fight with a sword, I wear a pair of boots, I wear crushed velvet, and I lose weight! It’s fabulous. What’s the appeal of pantomime as an actor? When I was first asked to do this it was a very scary process. I didn’t quite know what a pantomime was. So I thought I could sit home and make life easy, or I could take the leap and jump off the precipice and see what this adventure was like. Here I am four years later. First of all I love how joyful it is. I love how much fun we have on the stage and how much fun the audience has and the circle that that creates. Second of all, playing the captain is so much fun. He’s just a really wonderful character. He goes from being silly, to being mean, to being funny. There’s just not another character like him. How are you getting along with your fellow cast members? I worked with Natasha yesterday for the first time and she is going to be an unbelievably great Peter. Les Dennis got married yesterday so he won’t be joining us for a few days. He is pretty much a slacker.
Have you had much of a chance to look round Liverpool? I’ve seen the plastic penguins. I’ve asked one on a date, but nothing doing. I was inside John Lewis and I found that to be exceptional - I bought a towel and it was an experience I’ll never forget. I was in Liverpool when I was 14 and I don’t remember the city at that time, it was a blur. I came with my parents on a trip and I was on a train from Birmingham to Liverpool. I took a wander and I was locked in a car with 14-yearold school girls. Let me just say I’ve never had a better train trip. Now I get to really experience Liverpool and everyone has been unbelievably warm to me. And you’re a big Beatles fan? Yes, I’ve been able to meet all the Beatles except for George, although I met George’s wife. I met Paul on the street in New York City and Ringo came with Keith Moon to the set of Happy Days. John also brought his son Julian to the set when he was nine-yearsold. I am thrilled that I was able to meet them. I have to say that I was a jabbering idiot each time. You must be proud of the Fonz’s legacy? I loved playing him and I loved the people that I worked with. The Fonz is actually the foundation of my life. He bought me a house, he put food on the table and he sent
my kids to university. Of course now when you have a daughter with a credit card you have to find another series because you go from doing really, really well to selling apples. Any regrets from your time as an actor? I was once asked to be Danny in Grease. I thought “I’ve done the Fonz now so I shouldn’t do the same role”, so John Travolta did it. I went home and had a soda. He went home and bought a plane. I don’t think I’ll make that mistake twice. Do you think there’ll be an Arrested Development movie, and if so are we likely to see you back on our screens? I believe that there will be a movie. I think that Mitch Hurwitz is writing it now and I think that I will be in the courtroom. Barry Zuckerkorn! That was an extraordinary character. He didn’t quite know what his sexuality was. Tell us a little about your next film, Running Mates. Running mates is a political spoof about people running for mayor of a small town and it could be anywhere in the world because people are the same the world over. I play the outgoing mayor of the town. He’s an affable, wonderful kind of guy and he’s really interested in the history of the town.

Winter Wonderland It’s Christmas! We need to buy a new tree and decorations. Could you give us some ideas on what’s new this season?

If you’re looking for something different this year, I would think along the lines of a winter wonderland although it’s a more traditional theme, it’s easy and elegant. It works really well on both white contemporary artificial trees and real spruces, both kinds bring their own unique quality, so it would really depend on the rest of the furnishing in your home. For your decorations think of anything that would add sparkle! I’d start with of course white lights. For the baubles use different sizes and textures, whites and creams with hints of silver snowflakes, stars, crystal and glass.
Rockin’ and Round I love the decorations you see this time of year in department stores. I think it’s their size that I’m drawn to, but you never seem to be able to buy anything so large on the high street. Do you know anywhere that I could purchase these decorations from and are they very expensive? Department stores would have companies that specialise in dressing to help them hire or buy these fabulous decorations that we see. Such companies would source the decorations from a specialist visual merchandising company. Most of the companies will not deal direct with the public. However www.dzd.co.uk will allow you to buy small quantities online, such as baubles of 25cm diameter. The decorations individually aren’t too expensive, but I would be selective or your budget could go through the roof. Happy shopping.

Could you give me some suggestions on how I can make everyday plates and dishes seem more festive?

A white table cloth, white napkins, silver ribbons, candles or tea lights, glasses, a sprinkling or scattering of snowflakes could be finished with some beautiful silver or glossy white crackers. “The way people view city centre living has changed dramatically”
King Sturge is reporting an excellent year for sales and lettings at its city centre branch, and associate Shannon Conway is also aglow as she joins me for lunch at San Carlo. The newest restaurant addition to Castle Street, and a welcome one for the business district, enjoys a light and airy interior with contemporary fabrics in deep reds, comfortable lighting and the services of genuine Italian staff. Over sparkling water, olives, and freshly baked warm bread with oil and balsamic, Shannon tells me that King Sturge is busier than ever: “With the government’s HomeBuy Direct scheme, first time buyers are able to invest in city centre properties such as The Foundry on Henry Street and St Paul’s Square without a deposit, and it’s bringing more and more people into the city centre.” The busy restaurant seems testimony to this fact. To start, we order scallops served with shallots, spinach and fennel, and are certainly not disappointed. We were also tempted by the yellow fin
tuna carpaccio, the baked spider crab and the octopus dish – and with a daily changing fish menu, this is certainly the destination for fish dishes in the city centre. Shannon adds that landmark Liverpool One development is also proving extremely popular: “One Park West is now almost full, and only 50 of the 326 apartments are still available. We’ve even had bidding wars over some of the apartments, with tenants choosing to stay and buy, and investors bidding for any still vacant. The way people view city centre living has changed dramatically with the arrival of Liverpool One, and it’s been fantastic for the city.” Over delicious and substantial main courses of lobster risotto, cooked to perfection - arriving with its head and tail adorning the plate –we discuss Shannon’s strong sales background, and her time at King Sturge since the branch of the global agent opened in Liverpool in 2004. “It’s essentially the same team there which was there at the beginning, and everyone works really hard. It started
off as a hard year, but we’ve kept all of our staff and we’ve actually made more sales in the last week than we did when the market was at its highest point.” She added: “I’m now qualified as a chartered surveyor, and we’re building our valuations department and adding to the sales and lettings with new staff appointments, so next year is set to build upon what we’ve been doing.” On the extension of the stamp duty holiday, which many developers are calling for across the UK, Shannon can see both sides: “In some ways, sales and completions have been boosted over the past couple of weeks because buyers are keen to sort out their affairs before the tax break ends. You could say that the end of the relief has acted as a sort of catalyst for the market.” Over cappuccino and Italian biscotti, we discuss everything from our shared passion for holidaying across the world to Shannon’s extensive traveling after she graduated from university, and boyfriend Michael’s longheld ambition to be
mentioned in a Your Move article. Then we hit on her talent for creating beautiful hats and fascinators for friends and family and visiting arts and crafts fairs; no surprises that this multitalented lady enjoys her varied role at this multifaceted firm – and the future looks rosy indeed.

The people of Hope Street and passers-by were in for a festive treat when The Snow Queen switched on 60 Hope Street’s Christmas lights. The magical occasion marked the launch of holiday festivities at 60 Hope Street and marked the grand opening of The Unity Theatre’s unique adaptation of Hans Christian Anderson’s ‘The Snow Queen’, which will be performed throughout December. Locals enjoyed mulled wine, delicious roasted chestnuts and mince pies while the Hope Street Choir filled the air with warm, Christmas melodies. Gary Manning, the owner of 60 Hope Street said, ‘We were delighted to see lots of familiar faces as people popped along for a mince pie or two, mulled wine and a bit of festive fun’.
