Good Moves!

Benefits from Completely refurbished throughout, a clean modern interior yet retains original charm and character. Best feature The spacious kitchen which could be extended into the utility room and with patio doors into the courtyard, this would become the heart of the house.

Its layout offers flexibility and potential to extend or remodel to suit the way you want to live, but if you didn’t want to do a thing to this lovely home, you wouldn’t have to as it has been well maintained by the current owner.”

HAVE YOUR SAY

YOUR VIEWS ON BIG ISSUES

Is an offshore wind farm good for Liverpool or is it more trouble than it’s worth? Liverpool could become the west coast’s major hub in development of the UK’s offshore wind industry, according to a new report published this month. “We believe the region has many attributes to provide an offshore wind hub in terms of maritime location, proximity to Irish Sea wind farms, available sites, logistics and a history in manufacturing and engineering. This combined with a willingness of business and the public sector in this region to work together can capture the potential. This is enabling us to promote a strong message to offshore developers and manufacturers involved in the supply chain.”

Dennis Henderson Peel Ports

“The offshore wind proposal is a fantastic opportunity for Liverpool and the City Region. It will be beneficial not just in terms of massively increasing renewable energy generation, but also in creating jobs, both directly and right through the supply chain. The opportunities for local businesses therefore are significant, and it is a great example of how the Environmental and Sustainability agenda can support economic development and growth. The scale of the plans are exciting, and it is another illustration of Liverpool’s potential for building on our existing green economy to become a major hub for green development, energy generation, and investment.”

Councillor Tim Moore Cabinet Member for Environment and Climate Change

“In broad terms it’s going to be welcomed, renewable technology is essential to keeping the country powered especially locally powered. The one thing we need to look at is the impact it has on the local wildlife because going back a few years ago when a similar renewable proposal was put through for the Mersey Barrage Friends of the Earth were against it because the long term impacts on the life system were going to be too great. We’re going to be looking really closely at this but at this stage we haven’t taken a view yet as we don’t know the full details of the specification.”

Frank Kennedy Friends of the Earth

“Damage from lightning strikes and gale-force winds are major threats. Breakdowns could cause mayhem and great danger in the shipping lanes. The Burbo Bank offshore wind farm was opened in October 2007. During summer 2010 the blades on all 25 turbines had to be changed due to corrosion in the blade bearings. The specialist vessel drafted in to repair the wind turbines is reported to have cost around £4m. We are subsidizing a flawed technology. Unreliable wind power must be balanced almost completely with a secure supply of electricity. The cost of both forms of generation must be met by the consumer in rapidly rising electricity bills.”

Angela Kelly Country Guardian conservation group

“By building these structures it does change the landscape; it changes the nature of the seafloor and fisheries resource and it interacts with the movement of Liverpool Bay. However, they are all relatively minor changes, the area that would be negatively impacted is very small as the footprint of each turbine is small but it looks so big because of all the space around the wind farm. For the fishing industry the impact won’t be significant. The wind farm will also create artificial reefs around the base of each turbine which will attract small fish to the bay. The benefits could in effect be larger than the negatives. The technology of wind farms has greatly improved in recent years, once technology is established it quickly becomes cheaper and the engineering is advancing multiplying the benefits of clean energy.”

Keppie Massie Keep it in the family The Keppie Massie mother and son team had a double celebration following the news of their promotions to senior positions at the estate agents. Sue Taylor, former head of residential sales and lettings, has been promoted to associate director of the estate agents. Son Ian Taylor, formerly senior sales letting consultant, has also been promoted to residential sales and lettings manager. He commented: “Even though the market is difficult in the past three years lettings has increased by 200 per cent and our sales have increased significantly as well. We have sale opportunities with the Unity building, Portside House and Mann Island. In Mann Island we have great incentives such as solicitor’s fees paid and stamp duty paid. Priory Estates are marketing a uniquely designed Anfield property, designed by quantity surveyor Robert Tiffin, as an eco-refurbishment. The refurbishment was a full back to brick refurbishment and reinstated to the highest specification. The improvement in the specification ranged from loft insulation, insulated external walls,

new up to date condensing boiler and tadpole tank, Quattro panel radiator reflectors, TRV’s and heat recovery ventilation to the bathroom. The anticipated savings of running this property has been reduced by £500 per year. Plus, the whole interior was designed within the principles of the Chue style of Feng Shui. The property refurbishment was requested by Sarah Higbid, a part time property

developer, before putting it on the market with Priory Estates, who suggested a high end refurbishment carried out by Robert Tiffin. Robert has carried out numerous eco refurbishments and consultations for private clients, all with great results. Sheila, of Priory Estates, commented: “The overall effect is fantastic, it is the very best. The soft colour tones are perfect and finish is a very high standard. This really does set a new standard for others to follow.” The property is now available through Priory Estates to rent from £600 p.m. and possibly for sale. Helping Hand Up The Ladder A number of families in L8 were helped onto the property ladder thanks to a day of free advice at the home ownership event at the Kumba Imani Centre. A number of property experts were on hand to advise first time buyers on financial advice and government assistance to buy a first home. They also advised on how to get help towards the cost of buying a first home and what properties where available in the local area. The event has been organised in partnership with The Regenda Group, Steve Biko Housing, Cosmopolitan, Habitat For Humanity, Liverpool Housing Trust, Homes Now/ Home Swap, Green Mortgage Services and Own Place. Ross

Cope, Access to Home Ownership Officer at Regenda Group, commented: “It was a really positive event, and there were very keen first time buyers there. We helped a good number of people and we’ve had quite a few come back with requests of further information to buy a home. The mortgage advisors gave advice on low cost opportunities and breaking down barriers to get on to the property ladder. We advised them on

home buy schemes, shared ownership and right to buy/right to acquire.” A follow-up drop in session will be held at Millenium House, Victoria Street, on November 29 from 6pm to 8pm. Advisors will be on hand to inform interested first-time buyers on access to home ownership. For more information telephone 0151 432 5200 or visit www.atho.org.uk

A campaign run by E Rex Makin & Co Solicitors supporting Zoë’s Place Baby Hospice by donating their services free of charge during their Make a Will fortnight has proved a great success. The campaign raised over £3,000 with over 50 clients making use of the free service and having their wills drawn up. Solicitor Naomi Pinder commented: “It became clear to me that Zoe's holds a very special place in the hearts of many local people who have expressed their love in making kind and generous donations - one elderly lady made a donation of £300. At the same time they have taken the important and often quite traumatic step of coming to see me to make a will which is so important to protect their loved ones and to ensure that their estate is dealt with properly and in accordance with their wishes. It has also created the opportunity for people to think about and discuss other issues connected with growing older and ordering their affairs in a legal and organised manner.” For more information on making a will contact E Rex Makin & Solicitors on 0151 709 4491.

Q&A Lynn Storey, Head of Remortgage

Q I bought a house with my partner several years ago. We are now separating and he wants to sell up and buy his own place. Can I buy his share in the property so I can keep it? A Home owners can choose how they own the legal (right to sell) and beneficial (right to proceeds of sale/rents and other profit) title to their property. Co-owners can sell or transfer their legal title and beneficial share to each other. This is known as a “transfer of equity”. A common example of when a transfer of equity would take place is when a relationship breaks down. You firstly need to find out how much the house is worth so you can agree how much should be paid for your partners share. If you want you can obtain more than one independent valuation to help you agree a figure. If your property is mortgaged you will also need consent from your lender, even if you don’t need to borrow further money to buy the additional share. Your lender will need to be satisfied that you can afford the mortgage repayments before they will consent to the transfer. The mortgagee will then join in the transfer by way of consent and to release the exiting partner. You will then become solely responsible for the mortgage. If you are re-mortgaging your property and transferring the equity at the same time then you won’t need the consent of your lender as the old mortgage will be paid off. Hot off the press YOUR GUIDE TO THE LATEST PROPERTY IN LIVERPOOL

Venmore Online

Liverpool estate agent Venmore has launched a new website as it responds to a growing trend for house-hunters to focus their search online. The firm, with offices on Stanley Street in Liverpool city centre and in Allerton, is also hoping to reach a new audience via social media. The firm took the decision to upgrade their old site and giving it a fresh new look after becoming part of the BFL Group. The new site offers easy to use functions such as a quick property search on the front page. Searching for a property also gives more information which reveals more about the area the house is in, with a map, details of local schools and nurseries so buyers can make a more informed decision. Different tabs on the site take the user to specific areas reflecting the different arms of the company, including Landlords and Letting, Professional Services and Auctions. A news section has also been added.

Venmore has also opened an account on social networking site Twitter, run by the sales and lettings team, which allows them to tell followers about new properties coming on the market. Darren Kay, Venmore’s Business Development Manager, said: “Whether they’re using a laptop, PC or their mobile the majority of interaction we’re having with our customers now is online so we needed to update the website so that it is more geared to this digital market and provides the information they need in a way that’s quick to download and easy to navigate.” To follow Venmore on Twitter: @venmores and their website is www.venmores.co.uk

First commercial green roof One of Liverpool’s flagship commercial developments, Number 4 St Paul’s Square, has been crowned green with the first sedum roof in Liverpool’s commercial district, fitted by main contractor Shepherd Construction. The 213 sq metre sedum roof is just one of the many sustainability features of the eight-storey speculative grade A office space being developed by English Cities Fund (ECF). The 10,126 sq metre development is set to achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating and improve target carbon emissions by 22 per cent. The sedum covering will absorb rainwater so that runoff is slowed, boost the insulation properties of the building and create a wildlife habitat; as well as filter out pollutants and provide greater sound insulation. This latest and final phase of development at St Paul’s Square is heading towards a May 2011 completion and will provide flexibility for multi-let occupation through the installation of highly efficient floorplates within an advanced glass facade system. Darran Lawless, development director of English Cities Fund, commented: “Speculative build is rare in this market but English Cities Fund has been able to continue to build such projects. We’re confident that Number 4 will attract high calibre occupiers joining others such as Hill Dickinson, DWF and the Royal Bank of Scotland who have all made St Paul’s Square their home.”

What attracted you to The Quarter?

Olwen and Lis a

It’s quite minimalistic so it looks really nice. Our friend lives next door and they told us about this place - this was the nicest apartment we saw and it was really good value for money. The location is really great we are only 15 minutes from the university, city centre and docks. And the building has a 24hour concierge so you feel really safe, and the handyman is always on-hand.

What about the bedrooms? O: Both bedrooms came with leather beds which are lovely and the furniture is of a high standard. I’m a big Twilight fan, so rather than clutter up my bedroom with lots of posters I just have this one, my favourite, in keeping with the rest of the flat. L: The windows are my favourite bit of the bedroom; I’ve kept the colour scheme in keeping with the colours of the season greens and browns.

Tell us about the living area... We love the open plan of the apartment, it feels clean and we love the big window. Everything in the kitchen is hidden, including the fridge. Nothing looks cluttered even though it’s open plan. The leather furniture is lovely and we have a sofa for each one of us.

And the bathroom? The bathroom is huge, with a power shower, a proper bath and a heated towel rail. It’s so much bigger than our last bathroom and it has a big window which is great.

What’s the layout of the apartment? We saw three flats in this building and this one was perfect because of the layout, it has a really big corridor, and the bedrooms are separate and a great size. The ceilings are also high so you don’t ever feel claustrophobic.

the

Masterchef interview with claire lara

In the words of Claire Lara if you put your mind to it you will succeed - her mantra has paid off providing her with the prestigious accolade of first female winner of Masterchef: The Professionals. After four intense heat weeks, a daunting semi final and an incredible final week, the chef talks to Your Move of the highs and lows of the series.

INTERVIEW BY DINA KARIM What was like it being on Masterchef: The Professionals? I've watched Masterchef for years and was thinking one day what if I applied; I never dreamed I would get on the show. I applied last Christmas and finished shooting in May. When I won, I was completely overwhelmed I couldn’t quite believe it; it’s only recently started to sink in. The judges said my dishes were full of flavour and delicate and said I won because I was the most complete chef. I think I've become a better chef because of it and you can do anything if you put your mind to it. What were the best, and most challenging, moments of the TV series? Going to work in Noma Restaurant, in Denmark, was the best moment. Cooking the

signature pastries belonging to the godfather of modern patisserie and the macaroon King, Pierre Hermes, and serving them to the man himself, and basically cooking for Michael Roux Jr every week was also pretty great. The toughest test was cooking for the 30 Michelin starred chefs and former Michelin inspectors and restaurateurs at Pearl - I was in charge of the main dish which was overwhelming. Although having said that, cooking at Noma for Rene Redzepi’s friends who were also Michelin chefs was really incredible. I can’t choose! I think any chef would appreciate how intense both of these challenges were. They were once in a life time tasks but also by far the hardest thing I have ever done in my life. How did you start out as a chef? I left school at 16 and did the Youth Training Scheme with Maggie Rimmer who was a great inspiration to me, and if you were good enough you could go work abroad. So I was sent to Belgium, and from there moved to Paris, in France, where I worked for five years. I met my husband, Marc, in France; he was a romantic Frenchman and he won me over with his persistent romance. I brought him home as a little souvenir…and I married him. I really feel I’ve met the perfect guy. I missed Liverpool though and came back to work here; I've worked in the London Carriageworks and Panoramic Restaurant but I am teaching now at Liverpool Community College. My life is just cooking. This is definitely more than a job; it’s a way of life, no doubt. It’s a brilliant, brilliant job. I teach youngsters, we just give them a trade, give them an opportunity and give them options. I get a lot of satisfaction from passing on knowledge, I just really enjoy it. I think it’s the lack of background which inspired me to become a chef, although my nan did do some

baking. My Dad is a postman, my mum a support worker. Mum and Dad are definitely not foodies. When Mum found oven chips there was no going back. My mum cooked ordinary food and I wanted to know what more could I do with potatoes. The food was quite boring it lacked ‘vavaboom’. How would you describe your food? I love home cooked food like a lovely Roast Chicken Sunday Dinner and I love cheese. My cooking is very French influenced so it’s full of butter and cream. I would really love to carry on learning, and that’s partly why I went on the show - to keep on learning. There was all this new way of cooking, like in Noma we tried botanical cooking which was all to do with plants and herbs and it was fantastic. And what about the future? Michel has offered us all a job, I cannot however accept full time work there at the moment, but will be doing a work placement early next year. I am hoping to open up a restaurant with Marc one day, it will be really good value for money. We also have our baby on the way so I’m going on maternity leave now.

BRIGHT CHRISTMAS This is the first Christmas I have lived in my own apartment. I can’t wait to have my friends come round for a party over the festive period, but I could really do with some advice regarding Christmas decorations! I would like to decorate my apartment, but I have a very limited budget and no colour coordination what’s so ever. Could you suggest a simple an easy way for me to create a festive magical display. The rest of the furniture in my apartment is very contemporary.

With over ten years’ experience in the interior design business, Sharon Armor is poised to answer all your design queries from DIY disasters to decorating dilemmas.

I think Ikea could have the perfect solution for you. It’s new for Christmas 2010. Designed by Carl Ojerstam, the Kallt hanging light decoration is a spiral shaped LED Christmas tree that even comes decorated with its own star. The contemporary design is sold for £59.00 and is bound to steal the show at any Christmas gathering you’re having. The Kallt also has its own green credentials, which you could also impress your friends with. LED lights on average use seventy percent less energy than incandescent bulbs and also last approximately twenty times longer. www.ikea.co.uk

RETRO BAUBLES We have decorated our lounge over the years with retro style and vintage finds furniture, wallpaper and fabrics. When it comes to decorating our Christmas tree we struggle to find decorations that are in keeping with the rest of the style of the room. Last year I made some decorations, but could you recommend any high street shops that sell retro style baubles?

Paperchase have retro and vintage inspired baubles in their Christmas collection that could be just what you’re looking for. The retro glass decorations pack of nine is a collection of multicolored and embellished decorations that have a nostalgic feeling of the early seventies and one too many snowballs being consumed by the adoring nanas of the world. www.paperchase.co.uk

STANDING TALL Every year my wife and I have terrible trouble deciding where to place the Christmas tree. We normally have a real traditional tree that goes in the far corner of our lounge. The problem we have with this is that our sofas block most of the view of the tree. We have tried over the years to rearrange the furniture in the room in different locations, but have never had any success. This year we are going to invest in an artificial tree, although we would like to keep to a traditional theme. We are hoping that you may be able to suggest the ideal tree for us. The Snowy Pine Paper Tree from John Lewis is the perfect alternative to a tradition tree. The tree stands at two meters high and only has branches to the top third of the tree I am suggesting this tree to you for this reason. I think it would remove the dilemma that you are currently having with the positioning of your Christmas tree. The Snowy Pine would allow you to place the tree in the corner of the room without you losing your view of the wonderful trimmings, lights and baubles. www.johnlewis.com

TABLE TALK

“Living in the city centre would benefit whole families in terms of maintaining close ties”

MARYA MCCANN HAS LUNCH WITH.... Jonathan Pritchard, LAG Prichard Chartered Architects unch at City Rendezvous was the perfect location to hear about LAG Pritchard’s latest city development. With the river as backdrop, and spectacular views stretching from New Brighton to Helsby, I could imagine one of the reasons that the Kings Dock site had been chosen for such impressive regeneration. Company director and principal of the architectural practice, Jonathan Pritchard, talked me

L

alongside a great location with great people involved we now have a great product.” Uniquely, Kings Dock Mill has more to offer than just the sleek city apartments for single professionals. There are bigger town house style homes in addition to apartments built above. “One unforeseeable advantage in the current climate is that is that three-bed homes are proving really useful within the rental market,” he said. And

“The contrast between the spiciness of the seafood dish and the faint familiarity of the lamb dish works really well” through the last five years as we enjoyed prawn toast, ginger infused beef and duck spring rolls over a huge pot of jasmine tea. He commented: “What began as a joint venture with a builder developer soon changed. Ultimately I had to raise the money and take it through to completion.” Kings Mill Dock, within the Baltic Triangle and just over the road from the Albert Dock, now boasts a 150 bed hotel (Hampton by Hilton), and 190 residential apartments. Jonathan commented: “Along the waterfront we are now one of only three big developers who are still building. Creating a mixed use site was an important aspect of the project, and

rather than taking a well earned break Jonathan is currently gearing up for Phase Two. He said: “I’ve learnt that plans can change along the way. Rather than fight problems which arise, keeping the original goal in mind and finding solutions helps one to reach the end game.” The main courses arrived (sizzling lamb hotpot and seafood fried with chillies, each served with rice) as Jonathan explained how Phase Two will promote supported living, bespoke adaptations and inclusion. I was surprised at how such logical ideas could also sound so groundbreaking. It is Jonathan’s strong sense of family and an emphasis on

people which have influenced his professional life. For example, of his plans to include a retirement home, he commented: “I can think of many older people who enjoy what the city has to offer. Living in the city centre would benefit whole families in terms of maintaining close ties.” And along with a retirement home the site will also welcome the Youth Hostel Association. Jonathan’s nephew has recently joined the practice and now represents the fourth generation of Pritchard architects. “Architecture is like a hobby to me and I don’t envisage a time when I will want to retire,” he said. “It is a lovely combination of the creative working within the confines of what is possible.” Although the Kings Dock Mill

is his most ambitious project to date, the one of which he is most proud is a little chapel near his family home in Grange-over-Sands, Cumbria. “Not only did I design the building but also the furniture and accessories.” Commenting upon the food he said: “This is my favourite Chinese restaurant in the city. The contrast between the spiciness of the seafood dish and the faint familiarity of the lamb dish works really well.” Citing both cathedrals as having influenced his work Jonathan believes that Kings Mill Dock fits well into the city’s landscape. He commented: “Using modern techniques and ideas we have created a very traditional construction in brick and slate.”

CITY RENDEZVOUS AT THE CHUNG KU – COLUMBUS QUAY, RIVERSIDE DRIVE, LIVERPOOL L3 4DB –

Lamb hotpot prepared with winter vegetables. The slowly cooked lamb brisket fell off the bone and was served in gravy, with Chinese mushrooms and bean curd replacing potatoes.

The dim sum was substantial and really good value for two people to share. The restaurant also boasts an extensive gluten-free menu. This has proved really popular for people with conditions which cause gluten intolerance.

Hair Liverpool THE VEEKA BY TONI&GUY

The Veeka Taking inspiration from the 90s grunge bands like Nivarna and celebrities like Fern Cotton and Courtney Love, The Veeka is from this seasons new Toni&Guy collection we've called "Project 10". The Veeka is our 2010 version that has a direct fashion reference and a lot more attitude! STYLIST: ANGIE JAMES

The cut Every year we reinvent our long haircuts to keep our long haired clients interested and coming back to us. If you have long hair and feel ‘bored’ the chances are it’s been the same shape for a while - you always wear it up or you don’t know what to do next? When was the last time someone commented on your hair? Lets be honest you’re not ‘bored’ you're feeling ‘boring’ (theres a difference). Its time you had something a little ‘stronger’ and definitely sexier! Long elaborate layers create volume but the hair is more editorial than footballers wives because it has a distressed texture and a rebellious DIY finish.

THEATRE, FILM AND MUSIC IN LIVERPOOL

Lennon Remembered Friends and artists who worked with the late, great John Lennon will come together for the first time in a historic memorial concert to commemorate 30 years since his untimely death.

The one-off concert Lennon Remembered – The 9 Faces of John is being held at the Echo Arena on December 9. The CMP Entertainment and Cavern Club production will focus on the significance that Lennon believed the number 9 had on his life. It will see 9 periods of John’s life represented by those who were there, including John’s first band The Quarrymen, Tony Sheridan, art school friend and editor of Mersey Beat, Bill Harry and Beatles Press Officer, close friend and ex CEO of Apple Tony Bramwell.

Cinematic encounters The eagerly-awaited latest installment from the Chronicles of Narnia series ‘Voyage of the Dawn Treader’ finds Edmund and Lucy Pevensie, their cousin Eustace, King Caspian, and warrior mouse Reepicheep on a mission to save Narnia itself. The Dawn Treader is the first ship Narnia has seen in centuries. King Caspian has built it for his voyage to find the seven lords, good men whom his evil uncle Miraz banished when he usurped the throne many years earlier. As the voyagers set out on their quest, they journey to

mysterious islands, encounter magical creatures and confront evil enemies before becoming reunited with the Great Lion Aslan. C.S. Lewis' novel The Voyage of the Dawn Treader is considered to be a fan favourite, so when Disney dropped the Chronicles of Narnia franchise and it looked like there wouldn't be a third installment of the series, eager followers of the books and movies were highly disappointed - that is until Fox Walden picked up the film and renewed the excitement for Narnia. In cinemas, 2D, 3D and IMAX, from December 9.

Pamela Anderson

Pamela is best known for her role as CJ Parker in the iconic TV show Baywatch. As well as Pamela, the show will also star Liverpool favourite Les Dennis as Wishee Washee. Aladdin will be doing all he can to win the heart of the beautiful Princess, but the evil Abanazar will be trying to thwart his plans. My favourite with...

KIM FAI

Kim Fai’s legendary DJ sets have established this young DJ from Tipton, Birmingham, as one of the most desirable bookings on the international club and festival circuit. With appearances at Creamfields, Global Gathering, L.E.D, and the upcoming Cream Boxing Night event Kim’s really started to make his mark amongst the House greats - and become a Liverpool favourite.

Thing about Liverpool

The people!! They’re great. Especially when they’re in party mode.

Club Venue

Cream. Heard about it since I was 11 years old - and it was worth the 15 year wait.

City Music

I still love a lot of the older Indie stuff. Oasis, Cast, Charlatans etc. I’m pretty much open to all kinds of music. Chew Lips are a really cool new band that I've been getting into recently.

Musician

This must be the most popular answer but I would have to say Mr Jackson. His musical and writing ability are the envy of every music producer in the world I guarantee.

San Diego is one of my favorite places to go. The people are friendly, and the food and weather are fantastic.

Book

Was God an Astronaut? Will make you think about things in a different way.

Food

It has to be Dim Sum. I could eat it all day every day.

Film

Friday. I must have watched it 100 times in my school days. It's not even that great but I love it.

Item of Clothing

My vintage leather jacket. Especially now it’s getting colder!

Ways to relax

Relaxing on the sofa with a good comedy movie. I'm pretty partial to a game of FIFA 11 too!

CREAM BOXING NIGHT, NATION Kim Fai will be performing at Cream’s Boxing Night event at Nation on Sunday, December 26. Tickets available from www.ticketline.co.uk or telephone 0844 888 4401. For further information visit www.myspace.com/kimfai
