What you need Vase Floral wire Scissors One or two sprays of red berries Holly Pine leaves and any other greenery you can ďŹ nd in your backgarden and park.

Prepare holly, pine leaves and other evergreen twigs by removing excess leaves. Cut stems on an angle underneath cool running water and change the water daily. Use the tallest flowers in the centre and shorter flowers around the sides. For the red berry table wreath, bend the sprays into a smallish circle and hold the shape by tying together in one or two places with a piece of floral wire. Make sure wreath is large enough for vase to fit inside.

Carefully cut a slice (as thick as your thumb) from the middle of the potato and press the cookie cutter into the slice.

Push out the shape you have cut and dab both sides of the potato on kitchen paper towels to dry it.

Press the fork into the shape to stop it getting too messy.

Pour the paint onto an old newspaper. Dip the potato shape into the paint and print it on the wrapping paper. Fill the paper with lots of printed shapes.

Pine cone wreath

What you need 18-inch grapevine wreath frame from local floral shop An assortment of natural pods, pinecones and seasonal nuts Apples Glue gun Fake snow spray Floral wire
Here we go...

Wash pinecones if you’ve picked them up at the park, and let them drip dry on some old towels. Place on tin foil lined cookie sheets and bake at 200 degrees for half an hour. This removes the resin and at the same time, leaves a wonderful aroma in your home. Note: If pinecones bought at floral shop skip Step 1.

Using a hot glue gun, add the dried decorations (pinecones, natural pods and nuts) to the wreath. Add fresh small apples to the wreath at same time, if you want to make the wreath last longer use artificial apples.

When all the pieces have been added, place wreath on newspaper or another surface and spray-paint the snow on the wreath.

Allow to dry (may take a few days). When fully dried loop with wire in back to hang.
Hallway Poinsettia garland What you need 1 hour
For a fresh garland, you need rope (1.5m) and enough off-cuts of pine, ivy, holly or any evergreen finds from the garden to disguise it.
Garden twine or wire to attach the garland to banisters and to fix the decorations to the garland itself.
Poinsettia flowers, red berries and any other decorations like sprigs of mistletoe or baubles.

Before you begin decorating, tie three lengths of string or garden wire at either end and in the middle of the garland, ensuring they are hidden amongst the foliage and that they are long enough to wrap around the banister. These will be used later to fix the garland to the banister. Cut some rope just short of the length you want the finished garland to be, then using garden twine or wire, attach the evergreen sprigs along its whole length until the rope is hidden.

Using wire, attach the red poinsettia flowers, spacing them evenly along the length of your garland. Then add any extra decorations.

Putting a garland on a banister is a two person job - one of you needs to hold it, while the other secures it, using the string or wire you attached in step one.
TIP To make garland last longer, use fake red poinsettia flowers as decorations.

Your vote is needed Local people are being asked by RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors) to nominate their favourite new building scheme in the North West for a top award. The institution, which represents more than 11,000 chartered surveyors in the region, runs the RICS North West Awards every year and is now looking for entries into the 2011 competition. Dominic Thompson, Chairman of the North West board of RICS, commented: “The awards celebrate everything that is great about built and natural environments. We look at everything from small renovations to multi-million
pound developments and we focus on everything that is good about a building, including quality. This gives members of the public the chance to make their choices known but it has to be a regeneration project, a new building or an environmental project that has been completed within the last three years.” The RICS North West Awards are split into eight categories – Building Conservation, Regeneration, Sustainability, Community Benefit, Commercial, Design and Innovation, Residential, Tourism and Leisure – and a Project of the Year Award. Schemes of all shapes and sizes are looked at equally and past entries have included an
innovative cattle shed, modern beach huts, a skate park and a coastal reclamation project alongside more traditional entries, such as iconic city centre buildings, new housing projects and business park developments. What attracted you to Cressington Heath? After years of renting we wanted a home of our own and had moved in with relatives while we saved for a deposit. Tell us about the living area... We bought a new Italian leather three piece suite, but it’s already been wrecked by the cat. Our black rug with white flowers and purple leaves is just lovely. It goes really well with my favourite eBay buy; a purple TV stand with an orange door that’s meant to tide us over until we get something decent. I’m thinking of painting the door black but people say it’s fine as it’s quirky.

Tell us about the kitchen... The kitchen is fitted with integrated appliances and tall units which are really convenient. We bought our dining table and chairs from a charity shop and while we’ve been offered a new table by friends and family I don’t want to part with it. It’s solid dark wood with tiles in the middle and because it’s got folding leaves we can adjust the size.
What about the bedrooms... The master bedroom is massive and simply gorgeous as it has a balcony and an en-suite. The en-suite means we don’t have to go wandering around downstairs to the bathroom in the night!
And the bathroom? The family bathroom is Daniel’s bathroom really, as we don’t use it ourselves apart from to bathe him. The bath’s full of his toys. The tiles in the bathroom are white with a white flower on, which are a good contrast to the tiles in the downstairs toilet, which are white with a black flower on. And finally, what would be your ideal buy? We’re still yet to buy carpets for stairs and landing, but I’d really love to have a traditional freestanding jukebox in the kitchen.

While some celebrities use their fame to party hard and end up in scandal, R&B singer Jamelia has shunned the vacuous ‘celebrity’ status to champion the good work of The Prince’s Trust, which helps young people get into work or training. Coming from a background that includes a criminal father and a brother in prison, multi-MOBO award-winner Jamelia Davis understands more than most how the right opportunity can lift you out of a life of poverty. The singer talks to Your Move after a recent fundraising night in Liverpool, and now that she is signed up to the label that brought us N-Dubz expect to hear a lot more of Jamelia in the next year.

What does being ambassador of The Prince’s Trust mean to you? It means a lot to me mainly because if I had not got that first job - if I had not gone into a career in singing I would have probably been in a similar situation and needed help. I think it is fantastic and I am
so humbled to be a part of The Prince’s Trust. I love being a part of this organisation, being an ambassador I do 38 Your Move
so many things including shows and presentations. How important are charities like this in getting young people out of a life of poverty? I think it is very important that young people know there is a place to go if unemployed and need a helping hand. It is hard to get back to a working environment after being unemployed for a long time and The Prince’s Trust gives people opportunities. You have been associated with a number of worthy causes like the NSPCC and PETA, why is it important for you as a music star to champion these causes? Being a public figure I can use that image to champion causes. I love to sing, I love my job and I don’t want to be a ‘celebrity’, you know. I want to make a difference, I’ve been blessed, and so I want to use my public image wisely. You signed up to a new record label in the summer, when can we expect to hear some of your new work? It’s fantastic; I’ve got some new stuff which I’m really looking forward to like the new album out next year (the name is still being discussed), which will start to hit the radio in January 11, my birthday. The music is unexpected so expect to hear something a little different - I can’t wait. What do you think of Liverpool? I love Liverpool! My family used to bring
me here when I was younger to visit the museums and I have some fond memories. The clubs are really great here too; R&B is a really big thing in Liverpool so I know it’s got a great scene. What are your plans for 2011? My biggest plan for next year is for me and my daughters to be happy. In the next year I will be doing some more acting which I’ve been doing for a couple of years now but singing is my passion so I’m looking forward to my album and doing more of that next year. It’s really good that you are already starting to plan for this work. I can’t stress enough that now really is the best time for you to be proactive. You should at least be planning and making time schedules. Make appointments now for the work to be carried out by the decorator and flooring contractor etc. If you’re having curtains made, contact your curtain maker and ask them to come and measure up, this way you will know how much fabric to order. I would recommend ordering the furniture you want now many stores and designers have payment plans which may help you spread the cost. Although all of this sounds exhausting it is the most direct way to make sure that you have everything you want for Christmas!

My husband has recently been made redundant. We are looking at this as a chance for a new start and are thinking about setting up our own business and working from home. With two young children the house can be chaotic at times and we are considering turning the garage into a home office. What is the best way to go about this? Turning your garage into a liveable space is a really good idea, a relatively simple job and reasonably affordable. Before you start you need to look at the build quality, older garages may not be that easy to convert as they may have asbestos problems, however structures that have been built over the last twenty five years should be ok. First I would contact your building control department at your local council to ask them for advice. You will need to apply for building regulations and in some areas you will need planning permission, especially if you want to change the exterior look, by adding windows and doors etc. Other factors to look at before you begin the work are heating, insulation, plumbing lighting and security.

Coldplay
Secret Location 19 Dec --Coldplay will play an intimate gig in Liverpool to draw attention to the problem of hidden homelessness and to raise vital funds for Crisis, the UK charity for single homeless people. The venues will remain hidden until 24 hours before Coldplay step on stage. Tickets are £50.

MARYA MCCANN HAS LUNCH WITH.... Martyn Green, partner at King Sturge inner with Martyn Green, partner at King Sturge and responsible for the residential side of the business, was fun. His approachable and chatty persona must have helped him get to where he is today, six years after King Sturge head hunted him for the new Liverpool office. He commented:

“On the first day of business, in our new office, I plugged the phone line in and the phone was already ringing. It was the first of 15 new instructions that day and a nice moment, almost like a sign of things to come.” Since then Martyn has enjoyed a varied client profile. “I love the diversity,” he commented, “I could be overseeing the sale of a one-bed flat to Mr and Mrs Smith in the morning and then taking instruction on a multimillion pound scheme in the afternoon.” Indeed, his biggest instruction to date is the £95m Mann Island development. Pausing for long enough to scan the menu, I was impressed at the
entitled Home Comforts which includes toad in the hole and lasagne. The Living Room is perfect for drinks or food in the evening. Effortlessly cool and contemporary (intimate leather booths or tables depending upon the company) yet preserving its Victorian features. The tone is dark opulence and huge cherubic themed paintings adorn the walls. Martyn’s beerbattered tiger prawns were a delicious starter. Fluffy battered parcels with juicy king prawns inside (I know, I tried one), and my grilled goats cheese on top of a spinach-filled Portobello mushroom was also good; light and fresh cheese contrasted with
the heavy and rich texture of mushroom. Main courses arrived - Prosciutto wrapped chicken breast with mascarpone for Martyn and seafood risotto for me. My risotto was bursting with king prawns, scallops, mussels and calamari. With each mouthful, I could detect the faint scent of lemons, which complimented the seafood wonderfully. The scallops were really meaty and flaky too. Of his chicken Martyn said: “It’s beautifully crisp, really delicious.” At the moment Martyn is excited about his firm’s latest product, Kings Dock Mill, which consists of 104 off plan flats and town
houses. King Sturge has assisted the project through from the building process to completion and the launch. He commented: “We have 17 people in the team who liaise with clients and ensure that they are 100 per cent happy with the service, whether it’s the sales or the letting process that we assist them with.” Over coffee, he gave me a hint of how he relaxes, in addition to playing golf and watching Mad Men. “I’ve always loved fast cars,” he commented, “and my younger son enjoys cooking and has encouraged me to get into the kitchen. Crème Brulee is our current speciality.”
