WORDS BY EMMA PINCH It takes just eight seconds for a buyer to decide whether they like a property. Eight seconds. Never mind worrying if they’ll clock the grotty grouting. Viewing a house, eight seconds is the time it takes to clamber from the car, check your top for spillages and pull open the front gate. Because it’s a fact that just like books, people judge a house by its cover. They shouldn’t, but they do. Peeling paintwork, a rotting sofa in next door’s garden, that set of ceramic smurfs – a wealth 24 Your Move
of small detail can make the door to possibility in a buyer’s mind clang shut. Some houses of course, can stand a little superficial dilapidation. Buyers are unlikely to be put off a 17th century thatched cottage with a brace of errant brambles on the path. But for the vast majority of homes, owners need to employ

Not just to sell their property, but get footfall through the door. “Buying a house is a very emotive issue,” says Phil Lawton, a director at Sutton Kersh. “People do judge a property on first impressions and if a house is attractive externally they are much more likely to
view it. It’s a process that takes place in the subconscious.” Websites provide the evidence. “We know that on property websites homes that always have the highest click through rates are the ones with attractive front gardens”, says Phil. Lisa Green director of The County Homesearch Company firmly agrees. “Kerb appeal really matters, especially at the moment. Most buyers will drive past a property before they book a viewing, so you need to attract them to come inside.” Optimising the ‘drive past’ is especially significant for city homes. “We always advise people to have a For Sale sign up because of buyers passing by who haven’t approached an agent, and if you live on a main road

But whatever you’ve spent doing up the kitchen or bathroom doesn’t matter much if you can’t get anyone through the door. “The bottom line is if the front of the house looks tatty
HOW TO REFRESH YOUR FRONTAGE THE FRONT DOOR
A freshly painted or varnished front door is very important, says Phil. Choose the colour that harmonises with the style of the house or with neighbouring houses. On a traditional Victorian house a bold colour like a bright red might suit it.
“Just 8 seconds to decide if you like a property” or untidy it gives the impression the house isn’t cared for,” says Phil. And Lisa adds: “There’s no need to spend a lot – a fresh lick of paint can work wonders – and keep on top of the gardening.”
GO GREEN
“My main advice is to take your lead from the property,” says Lisa. “I personally think a wooden door is very attractive, but if the rest of the house is uPVC it might look out of place. “If it’s a high end property go for the best quality door, but if

you just want to smarten up, go for something that does the job.”
DE-PERSONALISE
No gnomes. No giant butterflies. No porches piled with household detritus or pottery hedgehog collections. “Once you decide to sell your home you should no longer think of it as your house,” says Lisa. “It’s as important to depersonalise and declutter the outside as much as inside.”
LIGHTEN UP
Good garden lighting should be very subtle, but is generally only necessary if you’ve got a long dark drive, says Lisa. Bear in mind lights inside the home that will be seen from outside if curtains are left open. Lamps can make it seem warm and welcoming.
DO THE DRIVEWAY
“Try and keep wheelie bins out of sight and if you have an open plan frontage take any litter away that blows across it,” says Phil. Cars and bikes should be parked neatly, and leaving space to park on the drive if kerbside spots are scarce is an appreciated touch. Broken fences and gates are obviously a turn off, adds Lisa.
A burst of tidy, vibrant greenery has universal appeal, especially on a paved over garden. “Hanging baskets are lovely, especially in the spring,” says Phil. “If it’s tidy and kept trimmed, greenery is good. That doesn’t go if it’s sprouting out of the gutter though.” “We do say to people it’s worth putting in planters outside,” says Lisa. “But remember, it doesn’t work if the plants in them are dead.” It goes without saying lawns should be mowed and after weeding it’s well worth covering the soil with weed-blocking bark to keep unwanted growth down.
SPARKLING WINDOWS
Nothing says uncared for like grimy windows or rotting sills. Clean or repaint or replace them. “Remember too that if your house opens out onto the street, people may be able to see in,” says Vicky. “So it’s helpful to keep window ledges clean and clutter free and the front room tidy.”
LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOUR
It’s all very well sprucing up your own house, but what if the neighbour is sabotaging kerb appeal? “It depends on how good your relationship is with your neighbour,” says Phil, “but one idea is to say you’re tidying up your own front garden and offer to tidy theirs too.”

During the last Census, only 89 per cent of households in Liverpool returned the document so the city’s population was underestimated by over 10,000 people - meaning it has lost out on at least £150 million in funding across the public sector over the decade. Where I live is city living for adults – I’m not 20 anymore. I chose this flat because I fancied living in a city centre again. Before this I lived in Aigburth and Manchester City Centre. Here I’m close to my gym and I can go and have a couple of drinks without worrying about taxis. But while it’s very much city centre, it’s a bit quieter too.
In my spare time I’m a theatre director with a group called Particip8 and one wall is going to be dedicated to our reviews. The first one on it is a fantastic review we had for Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, which we performed at the Unity Theatre.
My dad has been a welder all his life but took up art and he’s really good. He just said, “I’ve painted this picture for your flat” and I love it. I’ve no idea why he painted a cow.
My ideal Sunday morning is going to the gym, going to get The Observer, and making a cooked breakfast at home. When I’m cooking I like to listen to the radio, which I chose to match the clock, from Clas Ohlsen. As it’s open plan, I can watch TV from the kitchen too. In the summer I’m looking forward to breakfast out on the balcony.
India was the maddest place I’ve ever been. Just landing at the airport and looking out of the window and seeing people cycling across the runway was a culture shock. I picked up my Mother Teresa figurine when I went travelling there 10 years ago. I hate wallpaper. My style is very much minimalist and monochrome. My friend did this painting for me of Billie Holiday, who I love. Alex Corina, who painted the Mona Lennon, is going to do a big monochrome painting of the Liverpool skyline for me.

Tell us about Gruntled. David Cameron has asked the National Office of Statistics to produce a happiness index to work out how happy the British public are. I’m conducting my own assessment of how happy they are. I’m making the point that cutting things from the public sector is not making people as happy as they might imagine. Sounds personal… It’s very much from a personal perspective. The show is trying to say something relevant about different things like tuition fees, NHS policies and David Cameron himself, pretending to be one of us – how we’re all in this together. But if you’re married to the daughter of a baron and worth five million quid, I would suggest maybe you’re not quite one of us. Maybe only one of us is living in the real world. A lot of people feel betrayed. They feel they’ve got a coalition government nobody voted for. There’s a lot of disenchantment out there. Is political satire making a comeback then? I think there’s always been politics in stand
up comedy; it just hasn’t been as high profile for a few years. I started off writing for Spitting Image in the early 90s so I’ve always done it. But there is more stand up on TV now. Some stand up comics – your MTW colleague Frankie Boyle for example – have had their knuckles rapped over jokes on TV lately. Are we getting too sensitive? It’s not that you can’t have a go at people, but if you are doing so you need to work out why. If you take this stuff about Eamonn Holmes for example (the BBC pulled sketches poking fun at Holmes’ weight after he complained), instead of about being fat, it’s more reasonable to have a go because he’s been on the telly for 30 years and hasn’t done a TV show that is any good. The BBC is publically funded so they are very sensitive to criticism, and that’s what a little of my new show is about. But if you don’t want bland TV, the next time the Daily Mail says people have complained about a show, all the people who didn’t find it offensive should complain about it not being repeated. How did you get into comedy? Through the back door, through not wanting to do other stuff. I studied Law at university and I wasn’t interested in doing
that at all. I got a very disappointing job in a law firm and spent one day a week writing comedy. Then I got made redundant and started getting work at the BBC. Writing for yourself is really satisfying. You can take something that’s going on today and do something with it on stage tomorrow. You’re not being limited by producers. What’s the worst job you’ve ever had? Easily, it was a job washing dishes in France which included polishing copper pans - the most frustrating thing I’ve ever done. After two months it was so bad I got ill one day. They tried to convince me I was hung over and drunk – even though I hadn’t been drinking - and made me get up. It wasn’t until I puked up they took me to see a doctor, who diagnosed food poisoning. Remembering that is all I need to keep me working hard at comedy. What’s the real Andy Parsons like? I tend to be quite shy. You would never catch me in performance mode in every day life. I would be walking past you with my hat pulled down. There’s still part of me that is more writer than performer.

CURTAIN QUANDARY
We have a property near to Sefton Park in Liverpool, and spent most of last year lovingly restoring the apartment. In the living room we have restored and painted the coving, wooden panelling and sliding sash windows in an off white. We have also reinstated a beautiful oak wooden floor. The furniture we want to use in the room is a collection of inherited favourites and items we have collected ourselves over the years. Now the project is nearly completed we are struggling with what to do with the windows. Could you help suggest what style of curtain could look best and what type of fabric? We would be really interested to see what you suggest. The room you have lovingly restored sounds so beautiful, as with any scheme it is always easy to lose momentum or sight of how the space will look at the end of the project. Given that you have such wonderful features in the room such as the panelling and sash windows, I would be inclined to look at the option of Roman Blinds. Roman Blinds enable you to use luxurious fabrics whilst still giving a soft elegant feel. I think they would emphasise the clean lines in the room whilst adding a twist of contemporary sparkle. This style would also enhance the collection of elective furniture you have collected over the years. When it comes to choosing your fabric, I would suggest finding a fabric that is traditional in design with a contemporary colour way. I have seen the new spring collections and I love the fabric Nizam from Osborne and Little. The fabric is a colourful large repeat Paisley embroidered design. It gives a wonderful exotic feeling of the orient, which would be in perfect keeping with your home.

BURLESQUE IN AIGBURTH The Sugar Circus is coming to town...a unique burlesque show will be hosted at a discrete venue in Aigburth. This show will take place in Aigburth in a Victorian building that will be converted into a 1920's/1930's French club for the evening with a vintage clothes’ fair upstairs, organised by the lady who runs Quiggins Antique - Sue Kendrick. In the basement, there will be a burlesque show that will include performances from Lady Wildflower, Suzie Sequin, Sticky Tuppence, Dreams & Whispers and 1930's singer Heather Marie. Bicycle film festival launched The Bicycle Film Festival (BFF) makes its Liverpool debut running from April 8 10, at the city’s acclaimed media arts centre FACT. The Bicycle Film Festival is an arts and cultural event that celebrates the bicycle. The festival brings together many creative communities, including fashion, music and art, as well as various 48 Your Move
bicycling communities – road cycling, mountain biking, BMX, bike polo – over a shared passion for bike riding. Film highlights for the Liverpool BFF this year include Birth of Big Air, the much-anticipated documentary on legendary BMX’er Mat Hoffman, produced by Spike Jonze; and Where Are You Go, by veteran BFF filmmaker Benny Zenga, following an epic bicycle journey from Cairo to Capetown.

Chunks of courgette were the only bland note. Peter’s main is Pad Med Mamuong Himmaparn (£7.50), a dish of chicken, cashew nut, dried chilli and vegetables in a lightly spiced sauce. Verdict? Peter loved the Satay – “light, sweet and really tasty” – while for me the soup was the highlight: a faultless blend of sweet, sour and salt, with a hint of heat. I ask him what his dream pad would be like – discounting Mann Island. “Remember that big white house overlooking the ocean in that Julia Roberts film, Sleeping With the Enemy?” he says. “There.” Home also to a rather obsessive tidier too, as I recall. “Once, when I’d gone out to collect a takeaway, my friends rearranged all the china in my cupboard,” he recalls, a touch sheepishly. “But I’m really not that bad.” Peter, we believe you! Liverpool’s Queen of Burlesque and Martini Lounge producer Miss Millie Dollar was joined by a host of exquisite performers including world renowned burlesque star Anna Fur Laxis, blues singer Coco Malone, award winning magician Paul Dabek and comic diva Mysti Vine, who also compéred the evening. The audience were treated to a 2 course dinner and exciting performances all with a valentines theme. Those in attendance were also treated to a taster of a vintage fair, which took place in the foyer. A number of budding burlesque performers took part in two sold out workshops held in Heebie Jeebies the day after.
