With over eight thousand properties in Liverpool currently vacant, Ad Hoc Property Management are property guardians providing an unusual approach for protecting vacant buildings. Living in a mansion at just £40 per week, with bills included, might seem like a dream - but with Ad Hoc, which has an office in Liverpool, it can be a reality. With current properties on their list including offices, churches, libraries, schools and mansions, they occupy the vacant buildings with ‘property guardians’, looking for an unusual home at a seriously reduced price. They work with the owners of these properties to offer affordable short-term living accommodation for young professionals, key workers and mature students.

LIVING IN A CHURCH Heavy goods driver Paul Glover, 58, has been living in a church in Speke, for nearly a year and said he has never felt safer in the accommodation thanks to the numerous cameras keeping a watchful eye on the property. “I was just looking for rented accommodation and this came up. After interviews with Ad Hoc I seemed to fulfill all the criteria and was able to move in straight away.” Residing in the 1950s church, means he gets his own room in the building, and the living room is in the nave of the church. Paul, who shares the space with another guardian, said the massive amount of space means he has a lot more freedom than ever 32 Your Move
LIVING before. “The space is so big, and although we didn’t know each other before I moved in, we’ve become friends now. It’s a very handy location as well, with great shops nearby and it’s close to work too.” Ad Hoc are a Dutch company, running for 20 years, with the Liverpool office open since 2009. With the downturn, they have seen a boost in properties added to their list. The recent Liverpool City Council Empty Homes Strategy found that of the 8,000 longterm vacant buildings, 75 per cent are private sector buildings, with over 1,000 unoccupied properties being social housing. Location does not seem to be a problem for Ad Hoc, with numerous properties across the city and with some just a stone’s throw from the city centre. Peter Hunter, 23, assistant bar operations co-ordinator, lives in
a former school just outside the city centre - with a bedroom in a 20x30ft classroom. “This is such a beautiful building in the city centre. It has these great brick walls and wooden floors, and three beautiful playgrounds and allotments. The space is massive and the rent
is cheap - you really can’t get better than this.” Peter found the property through an online advert and now shares the big school with five housemates, paying £180 per month for the accommodation, bills and council tax.

PROPERTY GUARDIANS Marie Taylor, branch manager of Liverpool Ad Hoc, said: “The business was started in Holland because of the serious problem they have with squatters, who have a lot more rights than they do over here. In Holland, the owner of the building has to prove they have a need to use the building before evicting squatters. In the UK squatters aren’t as big a problem, but vandalism is a big problem with windows smashed showing no one lives there, and copper wiring stolen or the interior stripped causing damage of thousands of pounds. By having a live-in guardian, the owners
often achieve a higher resale because the building is occupied therefore it reduces the risk of dilapidation and vandalism and is generally in a more presentable condition. With all the cutbacks and because of the downturn we’ve found a lot of private sector companies are using us as an acceptable security method rather than paying for very expensive 24-hour security guards. In the North as, we mainly work with housing associations and dioceses, we have a lot of council flats, hotels, churches and schools on our list.”
With the Liverpool office the second largest one in the UK, Ad Hoc are always looking for new guardians. All guardians are fully vetted and trained and are normally key workers, working professionals and mature students with an average age of 25 to 35. Licence Fees (rent) depend on the building and location, however as a guide, fees range from £135 per month to £205 per month. Ad Hoc charge a one off registration fee of £20 and a £300 security deposit. Guardians are expected to live in the unit on a full
time basis, keep an eye on the property and keep it clean and tidy. When the owner needs the property back, guardians are given two weeks’ notice, with Ad Hoc usually relocating them. Although it varies, they generally keep units for around eight months, although they have had some buildings for over 10 years. Congress selection committee choosing our city will ripple for many years to come. We want to create the conditions in which innovators and entrepreneurs can thrive, and that has never been more important than now.” Jonathan Ortmans, the president of Global Entrepreneurship Week who led the selection process said: “We were impressed by Liverpool’s tradition and history of entrepreneurialism and the attempts they are making to embed entrepreneurship across the city in a range of innovative ways. Liverpool Vision’s bid was outstanding and it has won the chance to bring the Congress to Europe for the first time.” The Kauffman Foundation is a non-profit foundation based in Kansas City, Missouri, working to advance entrepreneurship education and training efforts.

EVERYMAN THEATRE CLOSING EVENTS The Everyman Theatre has revealed its final shows ahead of the £28 million redevelopment, closing the theatre for two years from July. The official closing date for the Everyman will be Saturday 2 July, with poets Roger McGough and Brian Patten performing in June. Rock band Deaf School will also be performing in June and Macbeth will be the final major production for the theatre, until it opens in 2013. Theatre company, Slung Low will be creating a fitting finale to celebrate this much-loved landmark. The theatre securing its full public funding package last week means that the project can proceed as planned. From mid-May onwards, there will be tours of the theatre and opportunities to see and discuss
the designs for the new Everyman, and throughout the redevelopment there will be regular updates as the new theatre takes shape. The new Everyman will include a new 400-seat theatre, which recreates the dynamic, and democratic ‘thrust’ auditorium and a new incarnation of the legendary Everyman Bistro. The fully accessible, welcoming and inspiring building will act as a ‘creative hub’, with dedicated space to house the theatres’ extensive and growing work with their Youth Theatre, schools and community groups. Gemma Bodinetz, artistic director, Everyman and Playhouse Theatres said: “Saying farewell to our much loved theatre will be a profoundly moving event for all who have worked and performed here and indeed for the people of Liverpool. We hope that our
planned events will honour the thousands of memories the Everyman contains but feel secure that its new incarnation will prove to be an even greater resource for our audiences, youth

I’ve seen The Gallery driving past it many times, so when one came up we saw it straightaway and this was the place for us. It’s close enough to town to be in town, but far enough away to avoid the noise.
From the balcony we can see all the landmarks, the Liver Birds, the docks, the tower, which is lovely, and it’s a good size too to sit out in the Summer.
It’s great to be living in the show flat. As the apartment had not been lived in, it was nice to know no one had been in the room, or used the bed or shower, before us. The building itself is really clean as well, and that makes a big difference. The maintenance guy, George, is very helpful as well, he’s always on hand. All the cushions, throws and everything were included as part of the apartment and it was just our style, contemporary and minimalistic. When we started looking we were looking for somewhere cheaper, but we couldn’t find what we needed because we wanted two bathrooms, a balcony, furnished and spacious - and this flat had everything we needed. The en-suite was a must. It’s nice to have a bathroom no one else uses, and one for guests. It’s a nice bathroom and the power shower is brilliant.

Even though it was at the top end of our budget, because everything was included, like the kitchen utensils, bathroom furniture, it probably saved us a lot of money from not buying all the extras. I also golf a little, at Walton Hall, and it’s ideal for the location for driving there. It’s handy for both of us to get to work, it’s straight down the Dock Road to get to Southport, and the other way to Speke as well. We’re testing the waters by living together, we know couples who have gone into a mortgage together straight away but this way round I think is more sensible. The decor has really inspired me for when we buy somewhere, I maybe wouldn’t have chosen the green wall colour but it goes lovely with the rooms and furniture. Vermont have been great, we looked at so many different places and dealt with so many agents but Nikki was really polite, and really nice. All the deals with them have been spot on, we saw the flat on the Tuesday and moved in the following Friday.

Interview with Francesca Halsall
SWIMMING
TO GOLD City of Liverpool sprint swimmer Francesca Halsall is one of the UK’s best gold medal hopes in the 2012 Olympics. Still only 21, she bagged her first Commonwealth Games silver medals aged just 15, and set a new British record at the 2008 Olympic Games. Currently 100-metre freestyle World Number 2, she has just scooped two golds at the British Championships to book her berth at the World Championships in Shanghai in July. Your Move catches up with her at a swimming training camp in Majorca.
INTERVIEW BY EMMA PINCH
How did you get into swimming? I got into swimming because my aunty used to swim for Liverpool and I was forever trying on her medals and wanting some of my own to show off. So I pestered my mum until she took me to a swimming club. I was awful at first, and hated it, but I kept at it. Eventually I swam with the City of Liverpool Swimming Club. I’ve trained in different pools all over the city, some of which aren’t even open any more, including Speke, Westminster Road, Everton Park and Queens Drive. Most recently it’s been at Picton Road in Wavertree in the new Olympic sized pool. How did you juggle swimming with school? My training routine was pretty hectic as I lived in Southport, went to school in Crosby and swam at Everton Park, so I was up at 5am to get to training at 6am, then went directly to school in Crosby. When school finished I was straight back over to Everton for my 48 Your Move
evening session so I was only home for 8pm. I repeated that from Monday to Friday - it makes me exhausted just thinking about it! What motivates you on a cold morning? The thought of making the London Olympics really helps, especially now it's so close. It's always kind of in the back of your mind. Also the fact that I would get a good old telling off from my coach if I didn't turn up is quite enough to get me there. What has been your biggest triumph? Winning silver at the World Championships in 2009. It was my first individual senior medal and it was such a shock to get silver, that it will always stick in my mind as a turning point in my career. I haven’t really had any major disappointments although when I got sick with Delhi Belly at the New Delhi Commonwealth Games when I was expected to win the 100m freestyle, I swam nowhere near my potential and targets. (She recovered to win three more silver medals in the women’s 50m freestyle and 4x100 freestyle and medley relay teams). Why are the Olympics so special? They only take place once every four years so you don't have that many chances to go
to one, then you have to be in your best possible shape for that day. Winning gold would fulfil a dream I've had since I was little. Also 2012 is not just about the London Olympics, it is a torch for future generations of British Olympians. What do you think of before the starting gun goes for an Olympic race? In my head I’m repeating to myself, ‘Come on Frank, you can win this!’ What is the best piece of advice you were ever given? To be the best you have to work harder than everyone else, have a better diet than everyone else and have better skills than everyone else. Simple! How is training going for 2012? It’s going good at the moment. This year is all about getting the hard work done, like working on my starts and continuing to build my strength. Next year in the lead up to the games it will be just focusing on dotting the I’s and crossing the T’s. Will you be following any other sports while you’re there? I would like to watch the athletics, cycling and rowing, but I am really looking forward to hopefully watching my boyfriend play in the hockey. What do you do to relax? I do a lot of shopping. I think any girl would say it's a great way to relax.

You can choose from over five hundred stock images from a Tom Dixon chair, or an Eames lounger and superimpose the piece onto a photo of your room. PLAYS ARE SO WRITE NOW New Liverpool playwrights from every walk of life will see their work showcased at this year’s Write Now festival. The event, the second of its kind in the city, takes place from 15–23 April at The Actors’ Studio on Seel Street. It will feature eight

SPANISH EXTRAVAGANZA DRAWS IN THE CROWDS Taste of Spain’ returned to Liverpool’s Williamson’s Square for the second year with paella and music. The free Spanish extravaganza showcased Spanish culture, gastronomy, activities and tourism. Music lovers enjoyed Andalucía’s live flamenco band ‘La Tribu del Compás,’ while activity seekers headed to Lanzarote to try out the surfing and kite surfing simulator. No Spanish festival would be complete without paella and the one cooked by the Region of Valencia serving over 1000 people drew in the huge crowds.
