lo and Adrian Simmons took centre stage when they got hitched at the Liverpool Empire. They met when Glo put an advert in the local paper. “I met a lot of frogs before my prince came along, but I really did know straight away that he was the one,” she says. “He was kind, intelligent and loving, and we made a good team. I had no doubt at all about going down on one knee.” Charity worker Glo had been widowed and Adrian, senior project manager for Bovis Lend Lease, had also been married before – but they were both determined not to go down the ‘boring’ registry office route. Both singers, the fact they were mad about theatre gave Glo an idea about a venue. Her best friend Bill Elms was marketing manager at the Liverpool Empire and he specially obtained a licence for weddings there. The production showing near the date they had set was Crazy For You. “It was perfect,” says 26 Your Move

Glo. “We asked if we could use the set and amazingly got the go-ahead.” Their wedding day was a dazzling production in its own right. The backdrop was a scene from 42nd Street, actress Eithne Browne was master of

ceremonies, three members of opera group BOST sang show songs, and guests in evening dress formed the ‘audience’ in the stalls. “Whenever I think back on our wedding now it conjures up something very unique that showed everyone how

High end nuptials Gemma and Shaun Ray had a wedding with a view – as the first couple to get hitched at the top of Blackpool Tower. “We did it to have something to tell the grandkids,” confesses Gemma, a former radio DJ, who lives with her telecoms engineer husband in Melling. They met at music festival Creamfields in 2007 and tied the knot a year later. Flowers, carpet, chairs and 120 guests were transported to the 380ft Tower Top via two lifts. “When the celebrant – who was my radio co-host Adam – asked if anyone knew any reason we should not get married there was a 79 second wait. They had worked out just how long it took for someone to climb up the tower. Someone at the bottom waited with a walkie

talkie to radio through if someone arrived.” Added Gemma: “It was the longest 79 seconds of my life.” As soon as the pair were pronounced man and wife, they looked out of the window to see staff had carved ‘Gemma and Shaun’ in huge letters in the sand of the beach below. “It made me fill up with tears,” recalls Gemma. “People say your wedding day is one you will never ever forget but I don’t think there’s any chance whatsoever of us forgetting we got hitched at the top of the Blackpool Tower.”

Red’s fan Mark Hendy and partner Ang got hitched overlooking hallowed turf – at Liverpool Football Club. “Every bride dreams of the perfect wedding day,” says, Ang. “My husband is a huge Liverpool fan, and all I wanted was to give him a lovely day that wasn’t all focused around me.” The couple’s pageboys wore full team strips, the bride wore a Liverpool garter and a wedding ring embellished with a ruby and diamond LFC insignia was specially commissioned for railway worker Mark. “He was smiling from ear to ear all day,” recalls Ang. “There are few men that admit their wedding day was the best day of their life!”

Suzanne and Mick Jones, from the Wirral, got married at Chester Zoo – where a very special friend could be part of the proceedings. The couple met when she was assistant retail manager at the Zoo shop and he was the head elephant keeper. “Getting married where you work wouldn’t be the perfect venue for a lot of people, but we knew how beautiful the grounds were around Oakfield Manor – where the Zoo boardroom is - and it made it very easy for all our friends to attend,” says Suzanne. One friend they were near was Sheba – Mick’s favourite elephant. “They go back a long way,” laughs Suzanne. “Before he met me his pet name for her was Mrs Jones. He would have had Sheba as a bridesmaid if he could. “Sadly she has since passed away, but having her in our wedding day photographs is a lovely way to remember her.” • For more information email events@chesterzoo.org

Spring on the waterfront Tall Ships, a Shanty Festival, regattas and historic canal boats will all be part of a maritime spectacular on the River Mersey, running from Friday, April 29, to Sunday, May 8. Spring on the Waterfront is a free ten-day festival packed full of more than 100 events for the whole family on land and water. Some of the world’s most famous Tall Ships, including Astrid and STA Stavros S Niarchos, which is the first new tall ship built in Britain for more than 12 years, will be docked for the festival. As the event launches on the same day as a very special wedding, organisers have made sure visitors will not miss out, with a Royal Wedding salute performed by the historic canal boats between 11.30am and midday. The Royal Wedding will be shown on a giant screen at Liverpool ONE, with a street party. Two exciting regattas will also see yachts from all over the North

West competing on the Mersey – the Liverpool Kindred Clubs Regatta (29 April - 2 May), and the Royal Mersey Spring Regatta (7 - 8 May) which will both see multihulls, nobbies and yachts compete for first place. The Shanty Festival, where performers will take to a floating

stage in Salthouse Dock and the quayside, will be filled with music from Liverpool’s golden age of sailing ships. Water lovers can make the most of free taster sessions of dinghy sailing, windsurfing, wakeboarding, kayaking, canoeing and paddleboards at the Watersports

It’s hard to imagine that more than a decade ago, the centrepiece of Liverpool’s finest park was no more than crumbling facade - until a community of helpers stepped to bring the crowning glory back to the park. In these last 10 years, the Preservation Trust has worked to preserve and nurture the love for this place, keeping it open and free to visit, extending its opening hours in the summer so the warm barmy evenings can be enjoyed. Elizabeth-Anne Williams, the director at the Palm House, has

been there from the beginning, guiding the venue through nearly one million visitors, more than 500 events – from Easter egg hunts to tea dances and concerts, and hundreds of weddings and corporate events. As part of the anniversary, they’ve collected a number of interviews from people involved in the Palm House, and are displaying the stories as an alternative history at the Palm House stage - the stories are filled with moments of love for the venue. “My favourite moments are arriving in the morning, after a cycle ride through the park and seeing the sun shining on the glass through the misty early morning frost or leaving at night, looking back, taking a moment to marvel at the lit up glory that is Sefton Park Palm House,” says ElizabethAnne Williams.

The traditional ceremony took place at noon at the village’s St Peter’s Church, and afterwards the newly married couple and their friends and family moved to Mere Golf & Country Club in Cheshire to enjoy a sunshine-filled reception. Helen looked breathtaking in a strapless white gown with embroidered bodice and cascading skirt, and her deep pink bouquet matched the dresses and posies of her two young bridesmaids. Both bride and groom would agree that for a dream wedding day, being royal isn’t required.

Julie Langan, a teacher at Woolton infants, and Anthony Langan, a teacher at King George V College in Southport, bought a one-bedroom apartment at Mann Island, following the show apartment unveiling earlier this month. The couple, who have been married for 19 years, bought the apartment as an investment for their retirement, renting it out until then. Prices start from £120,000 for a one-bedroom apartment.

The kitchen came with a black finish, so we have designed the open plan front room around it; black with touches of red, and very simple. I spotted the cabinet at John Lewis some time ago, and it was perfect for the room. The picture of the monkey is from St Ives, called the Dawn of Aesthetics.

We were just looking at flats, and Mann Island kept popping up, and we thought: ‘Gosh, the position must be amazing with Liverpool ONE just around the corner.’ We went to the show house opening, and loved the position so much we decided to take the biggest risk we have ever taken. We are going to be renting it out and maybe in a few years, once our children are grownup, we can move in here. Friends who have visited us are stunned by the inside of Mann Island. It’s all black outside, and all white inside. Our family home in Woolton is over 200 years old, so the furnishings are more traditional. This place is the opposite, with a contemporary, sharp look. The mirrors all reflect the beautiful views of the river, and the interior design borrows from the outside environment; the green carpet borrows from the greenery outside and everything is reflective, for light and space.

We were in Venice a couple of years ago and stayed in a very modern hotel, which is where the idea for a clear table and chairs came from. The masks are also from Venice, adding a touch of colour to the hallway. The bathroom is very big, almost as big as the bedroom, with a powerful shower. Everything is very modern, and well designed. The courtyard gives a sense of community; it is very inclusive of your neighbours, but still remains private. The bedroom is a good size, facing out onto the balcony and courtyard - where you can have breakfast or sit with friends. The bedroom is going to have blackout blinds to give a sense of privacy because it faces onto the courtyard. The Pier Head used to be burgers and doughnuts and now it’s so classy and a nice place to live. It makes us proud to be part of such a development.

Macbeth will be the final major production for the Everyman Theatre before it closes the curtains on Saturday, July 2, for two years for a £28 million redevelopment. Actor David Morrissey will return to this stage for the first time in 30 years to play the doomed king in the bloody tragedy. The Liverpool-born actor talks to Your Move about training at the Everyman Youth Theatre and acting in the ‘Play That Shall Not Be Named’.

H

ow does it feel to be back on The Everyman stage? This city and this play is quite weird for me, I used to run around the Everyman, the main theatre was very good to us as a youth theatre. We used to run up to the actors, while they were having their lunch, and bombard them with questions. The Everyman Youth Theatre was very important to me because it was where I first saw theatre, it was certainly where I first saw new writing and theatre that reflected the community, reflected what was going on in my city. You are known for doing rigorous research for your roles - how does it feel playing a character with so many different versions? I think you have to approach it like any part rather than think of it as your place in an historical canon of having done it. You just have to take it like

it’s being done for the first time, so that it’s just a wonderful character. It’s such a great story so I just want to just tell that story and get involved in that character. The other thing about the play is that it represents a turbulent world and I feel that is where I live now as well, as I read the play it’s so similar to the developments I see on TV. Macbeth is quite a challenging role, with all the psychological drama of Shakespeare’s play, can you draw on any past roles to help you portray the king? What I’ve tried to do all my life is to have as many various roles as possible, mixing it up. Macbeth is a challenge on many levels, but I’ve dipped my toes into that type of psychological person before. He is quite a tangible character as far as his ambition is concerned and his ruthlessness. I’m always ecstatically happy and proud whenever I go to any job really, and it’s mad that I just love going to work so it’s a privilege to play Macbeth. The Everyman Theatre has been seminal in your acting career, tell us a little more. It’s quite an emotional time to be here, everything I learned about being an actor was in here. I grew up wanting to

be an actor but in a household that didn’t know anything about acting at all. It was like saying to my parents I wanted to be an astronaut, so they had no idea what to do because it was a profession they had no idea about. Then I told my cousin and he was going out with a girl who worked in the box office here and he mentioned the Everyman Youth Theatre and I was welcomed with open arms. It was the first time people took my idea of wanting to be an actor seriously because I was surrounded by actors and performers. I was in a part of Liverpool I didn’t know either, and I suddenly found this real cultural vibrancy with the music, writing and performance. So, to be back here performing in this particular play makes me feel a little like a grown-up which I haven’t felt for a long time - part of becoming an actor was so I didn’t have to grow up. Every brick in the wall is a moment, so it’s serendipity. Macbeth will run at the Everyman

ighty-eight Liverpool ladies gathered at The Blackers Room, above Tess Rileys Pub, to enjoy a very British vintage tea party, with finger sandwiches, organic tea and a variety of cupcakes. The party is the first of the monthly affairs hosted by Cupcakes in the City founder Lesley Rawlinson. Michael Buble tribute artist, David Astles, capped off the afternoon. The tea party also celebrated the launch of the vintage-themed Tiny Tea Room, a private room available to hire in Aintree for small hen parties, baby showers, and birthday celebrations.
