With oil and gas reserves dwindling fast the question of how we conserve existing energy and up our use of renewables is the burning issue of the new decade.
as and electricity bills are going up. Again. When yet another hike is announced by the likes of Centrica, it’s tempting to tell someone to take a long walk down a short pier. Now, it may no longer be just fantasy. Once the dream of hippy communities, power micro-generation – home produced renewable electricity – is fast becoming a must have for the most ordinary of urban and suburban households. Already, according to the Energy Saving Trust, more than 30,000 households have switched on to the idea of turning their homes into mini power stations, and experts predict that number is set to explode over the next decade. Why? Well, not only because it cuts escalating fuel bills, and makes you feel better about all polar bear cubs stranded on melting ice caps – but because it generates cold hard cash. The background is that the Government is currently in a race to get a fifth of the UK’s energy supplied from renewable sources by 2020. One of the ideas their bright sparks have hit on is paying us to produce our own green power. Under the Government’s Feed In Tariff scheme, rolled out a year ago, households which produce their own electricity through solar panels or mini wind turbines are paid more than £800 per year to sell excess power – it’s more or less impossible to store it – back to the national grid. In addition, based on average costs for a three-bed semi, you can expect to see £140 chopped from your annual electricity bill. Terry Hughes, who set up Speke-based CBE Solar Services in 2002, says the interest in micro generating is set to soar in the UK. He says German firms, who have seen use rise to 100 times that of Britain over the 26 Your Move
years the tariff scheme has been in operation there are, already jostling for a slice of the Merseyside market. “The Feed In Tariff is a great leverage tool to get people to introduce a piece of technology that self generates electricity,” says Terry. “It’s a win win deal. Over 25 years you can make more than £25,000 cash. This market is going to be huge.” From July this year, households who install almost any technology that contributes to a home’s heat and hot water needs, will have the chance to grab some green cash. In the first scheme of its type in the world, the new Renewable Heat Incentive, the heavyweight big brother to the Feed In Tariff, will see the Government pay a household money for every single unit of heat offset by the likes of biomass boilers or air or ground source heating systems. Landlords, businesses, farmers, hospitals and even entire communities will be encouraged to have a go. A good chunk of those people currently getting in early are people close to retirement age, hoping that by investing a chunk of their nest egg in the technology they will have freedom in years to come from the tyranny of power companies. Key to maximizing savings from home produced power is tweaking ordinary household habits, advises Terry. He says: “If you install solar panels to save on bills and earn more money you need to think about putting the wash on before work and putting the timer on for the water to heat up during the day.” To kickstart the renewable fuel revolution the Government is handing out a one-off grant this year, called the RHI Premium Payment, towards the purchase of a microgenerator unit. It’s a tempting package. But which renewable technology is right for your home? Your Move investigates.

AIR SOURCE HEATING How does it work? Like a fridge, but in reverse. Takes and compresses cold air to produce hot water and heating, replacing gas. Suitable for? People living off the gas grid; Cost to install? Around £6-10,000 Savings? Up to £330, plus RHI earnings. Pros: Constant throughout the year; takes up little space; good for space heating; relatively cheap to install. Cons: Needs some electricity to run motor; most efficient at low temperatures.
How does it work? Pipes buried in the garden extract heat from the constant temperature of ground to provide space heating, under floor heating and hot water via a fridge-sized pump. Suitable for? Homes or businesses with land attached; homes off the gas network; homes using oil. How much to install? £820,000. Savings? Up to £390 a year, depending on what fuel you were using plus RHI earnings. Pros: Great for space heating; constant throughout the year; very low maintenance. Cons: Installation expense; needs electricity to run the pump; most efficient at low temperatures.

MINI WIND TURBINE
How does it work? Photo voltaic cells fixed onto the roof produce electricity. They power up on daylight so you don’t need to live in California for them to work. Suitable for? Ideal if you’ve got a south facing, unshaded roof 6m long and 4m wide. How much to install? CBE Solar Services will install it for £8,000. A glut of companies now install solar panels for free in exchange for your excess energy under a sort of 25 year ‘rent a roof ’ arrangement. Savings? Typically £140 off your yearly bill plus £800 a year from the Feed In tariff. Pros: Relatively discreet, low maintenance; completely renewable energy. Cons: Electricity fluctuates with daylight hours, so you need the national grid as back up.
How does it work? Similar to a windmill, a blades on a turbine attached your building or on a pole in the garden turns to generate electricity. Suitable for? People in exposed locations; people with large amount of garden space for the bigger turbines. How much to install? From £2,000 - £22,000 depending on size. Savings? Excess electricity can be sold to the national grid via the Feed In scheme, with the larger turbines generating as much as £3,300 a year. Pros: Potentially very good payback; totally clean electricity Cons: Planning permission needed; highly visible; needs some annual maintenance; needs national grid back up on calm days.
BIOMASS BOILERS
How does it work? Similar to a traditional range, wood pellets (waste from timber companies) fuel a boiler, which can supply full central heating down to a stove. Suitable for? Most houses but flats are unsuitable as you need a flue and space to store the boiler, and wood pellets. Cost of installation: £11,500 Savings: £390 per year plus RHI earnings. Pros: Virtually carbon neutral; controllable, closest replacement to gas and oil. Cons: Cost and storage of pellets; produces ash.

I have one of my three bedrooms set up for my office and I use it, on average for 3 days a week (when I am not out with my clients). How will the calculation work for me? Firstly you need to separately calculate the total annual Fixed costs (Mortgage Interest, Council Tax, Rent, Insurance, Repairs). Once this is done you then decide on a fair allocation method. For example, let us say that your house has 6 rooms, and you use the spare room, for your business for 30 hours a week, with your family also using the room for a further 6 hours a week. You can therefore allocate: • 1/6 x 30/36 of the fixed costs of running your house. If you calculate that the fixed costs of your property are £18,000 per annum, this means you could claim an annual deduction of £2,500, saving tax of up £1,025 a year, if you are a 40% tax payer. A further claim could be made for the ‘Variable’ costs such as Electricity, Gas and Water, increasing the tax saving even further. As always good professional advice is recommended. Dramatic election result In what was described as Britain’s most important election and referendum in 300 years, May’s Liverpool elections saw the Liberal Democrats almost wiped out with an overwhelming Labour majority. The city’s most dramatic election result, saw Liberal Democrats lose 11 of the 13 seats it was defending leaving the Labour group with 62 seats, the Lib-Dems with 23, the Liberals with three and the Greens two. The AV referendum, designed to secure 50 per cent or more support for MPs by allowing voters to rank the candidates on offer in order, got a resounding ‘No’, with 63 per cent in Liverpool,70 per cent in Sefton and 68 per cent in Knowsley. Councillor Joe Anderson said:
“The results in Liverpool are fantastic for the Labour Party. They have been a disaster for the Lib Dems. Liverpool has suffered the worst cuts of any city or town in the country. They are hurting but not working. It’s no wonder the Lib Dems suffered their biggest defeat in 50 years. There’s no doubt the anti-Clegg vote had a huge impact, but I think Liverpool has been turning against the Lib Dems for a long time. People have put their faith in Labour because they know it’s only Labour who will stand up for them and for Liverpool.” The biggest surprise of the night was the win by Labour candidate Jake Morrison, an 18year-old hospital care worker, who took the Wavertree seat from the veteran former Liberal Democrat council leader, Lord

LIVERPOOL ATTRACTS AMERICA'S PRIMARK Fashion chain Forever 21, dubbed ‘America’s Primark’ is set to open a flagship store in Liverpool if plans are approved.

The store would be situated on the corner of Whitechapel and Church Street in central Liverpool, and would see the current building demolished and a five-storey fashion shop built for the global giant. The project will create 200 jobs as well attracting an added flow of people back to the Whitechapel area. US-founded Forever 21 has 480 stores worldwide and has recently been described in a British national newspaper as ‘the retailer of the moment’, and ‘a fast fashion phenomenon’. Currently there is only one branch of Forever 21 in the UK which opened earlier this year in Birmingham. If planning permission goes through the
Liverpool store could be open for trading by November next year. Larry Meyer, executive vice president, Forever 21 said: “We are extremely excited to have found a great store space in a location where our customers will appreciate our brand. The size of this store will allow us to offer a great range of products at great value to fashion conscious and trend driven shoppers in the area.” Ged Gibbons, chief executive of Liverpool’s City Central Business Improvement District (BID), said: “This site is key to pedestrian movement around Liverpool city centre and has huge potential to make a big difference with the right development. The fact Liverpool is continuing to attract potential investors of this stature in the current climate speaks volumes for the city’s appeal as a quality retail destination. John Lewis has been a big inspiration – maybe it’s because I have such a good view of it. I’m going to look at a chair there to go with the others I got for the dining table, which I mixed and matched myself.
It’s lovely to live so near to so many great bars and restaurants, and Chaophraya and Palm Sugar Lounge are favourites. I knew I wanted a balcony and the 10th floor was the only one that had one.
Monochrome black and white was the original idea, but then I decided the living room needed a bit of colour. I bought the settee, which is grey and I don’t know what made me buy lime green cushions – maybe the fact they were half price.
The view from here is amazing. The balcony stretches the whole length of the apartment and the floor to ceiling windows make the apartment very warm and airy. When you step out onto the balcony you can see Liverpool One, the leisure terrace and even over to the river. I like the fact the kitchen is open plan, but the kitchen is practically in its own room. My mum and dad are 80 but they insisted on putting up the wallpaper. My mum was a seamstress so she’s got a steady hand and is very meticulous. They they fought about the fact that apparently there’s a gap between two of the wallpaper strips, but I haven’t noticed it.

I’m no expert in furnishings, but I thought I’d have a dabble and I ended up getting quite into it, which surprised me. The flat is in the middle of a very modern part of the city so I kept everything modern looking. I saw the lamp and the wallpaper in a magazine and thought I’d replicate that at home. Bo Concept has the perfect long, thin picture that is perfect for my living room wall and I’ve just ordered it. I like the Beatles lyrics on it, from songs like Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds and Yesterday. I’m quite into wine. I like reds, and I got a taste for Portuguese wine when I stayed at the place I used to have there. When summer kicks in I’m looking forward to having a glass or two on the balcony outside and taking in the wonderful view.

INTERVIEW BY DINA KARIM Duran Duran’s latest album All You Need is Now has won critics the world over. It’s a big departure from your previous album, Red Carpet Massacre, which to all purposes sank in the charts. What makes this one so different? It’s produced by Mark Ronson and mixed by Spike Stent, and what’s most significant about it is that it supports our 1982 album Rio, with the synths and funky bass it’s very electro pop. Mark Ronson is such a great fan of ours that he asked if he could work with us on what he saw as the imaginary follow-up to Rio. And we’re great fans of
his, it took us about one and a half years to make it - it wasn’t always easy but I think Mark brought some of that magic back that helped us make the best album out in many years. We had really good press from this album which is unusual because we’ve never been the darlings of the press. We’ve also got Scissor Sisters’ Ana Matronic who added her vocals to the Blondie funk [of Safe]; she sang perfectly and we wanted someone with a real attitude. The band does things a little bit differently, experimenting through music videos and social networking. You’re actually quite an avid Tweeter now, keeping in touch with fans through Twitter. How did that come about? We did something different with this album, we put the songs exclusively on iTunes and it hit the number one spot on the download charts, with the first
single free to download for a day as well. Our manager said we should get into Twitter, and I thought I should sign up to Facebook and Twitter and I found it fun and inspiring. I’m in motion a lot and on my Blackberry all the time, there is an interconnectivity in a way not seen in years, it’s brought energy. What can we expect from your upcoming tour? It’s 30 years of music making and they have to work together, it’s this constant gelling of the catalogue and we take pride in our shows, we’ll take our fans through a journey of three decades, with lots of familiar songs. I always publish the playlist on Twitter beforehand anyway. We are on the road all year and it could quite easily go into next year. As we get older, we really feel we have to take advantage of being able to tour, when you make something really good you feel really good about it so we wanted to get out there and share it with the world. It is such an honour to get to do a British tour again, it is enormous, very emotional. You want to make it a fantastic experience for everyone involved. I love Liverpool, we had a great time at the Summer Pops a few years back and the fans were really great. Although the band’s music might have had its highs and lows, you’ve always been known for a great sense of style and a huge influence on 80s fashion. Do you still dress to impress? I feel I am more conservative now, it’s less about getting attention and more about looking sleek. WALL WOES My boyfriend and I have just entered the property market and bought our first home together. All the walls in the property are painted at the moment, but in the hallway and living room the plaster work is so bad that a painted finish looks awful. Your dad may have a good suggestion! Anaglypta wallpaper has traditionally been used to cover uneven plaster work and make the walls good for painting. The unique advantage of this covering is that it can be painted over many times allowing you to change the colour scheme without having to re-plaster the walls or repapering. I can understand both of your reservations about the tired look of Anaglypta, the paper has gone out of fashion. The manufacturers of the paper have reinvented and updated some of the designs, so I really think this could be an option that could work for you. Have a look at the collection of Vinyl Folded Papers, they could look very smart in your living room and you can choose whether to create a feature wall design or paint the room in a soft colour allowing for the play of texture and light.
INSTALLATION We live in an older property with beautiful sash windows. We think the windows need replacing as we get a strong draught. We have contacted a few companies for quotes, but they are coming back very expensive. Do you know if there is anything we can do to stop the draughts? I think you’re being very sensible exploring all options before the expensive business of replacing old windows. I have no easy solution, but I would contact a company that specialises in refurbishment, and investigate the prospects of this first. There is a process called draught sealing which can be done on these windows, and this could be all that is needed. It would make financial sense improve the window’s energy performance whilst honouring the historical integrity of your property.

The 200-year-old Aigburth club is staging home games for Lancashire while the club’s Old Trafford home gets a facelift. And the four-day County Championship derby between Lancashire and Yorkshire from May 18 promises to be a thrilling one. Lancashire is currently at the top of the league and Yorkshire close behind it. Liverpool is set to rock to the strains of the fourth Sound City this month, with more than 300 bands playing across 30 venues. Latest band to confirm attendance is The Kooks, who will join the likes of Miles Kane, Black Lips, The View, Jamie XX, Funeral Party and Cast, who have already signed up. he lunch was sumptuous, the company delightful. I met with Peter Foxcroft, one of the four directors of Abode Crosby estate agents, at the sophisticated Pioneer Crosby to discuss the avant-garde estate agents who take pride in going the extra mile for customers. The new estate agent is taking customer service to the next level with their clever use of new technology, whilst finding each customer their ideal home and selling at the right market price. According to property analysis websites, Crosby is one of the worst towns for property sales in the UK, with each one spending an average of nearly a year on the property market. CROWDS GATHER FOR SHANTY FESTIVAL, TALL SHIPS AND REGATTA housands of people visited Liverpool’s most beautiful asset, its waterfront, celebrating the Spring on the Waterfront festival with a range of events. Families were able to board one of the many Tall Ships visiting the city, the canal was lined with numerous colourful canal boats and people were kept entertained by the flocks of comedians visiting for the Liverpool Comedy Festival. Down at Salthouse Dock, a floating stage rang with songs and music from Liverpool’s Golden Age of Sailing Ships during the Shanty Festival.
