NEW DEPUTY LORD MAYOR APPOINTED Councillor Sharon Sullivan has been appointed the new Deputy Lord Mayor of Liverpool. Cllr Sullivan who is the Labour Member for Central ward, has been a councillor for nine years.

During her year in office, Cllr Sullivan said that she wanted to make sure the role of dockworkers and merchant seamen and women in Liverpool is better recognised. She said: “All the men in my family worked on the docks and travelled out to sea and I think there needs to be more acknowledgement of the huge contribution dockworkers and merchant seamen and women have made to our city. That’s something I’m very keen to focus on during my time in office as Lord Mayor. I’m very humbled and honoured to be nominated as Deputy Lord Mayor. It’s the one of the highest honours that can be bestowed on
anybody who lives in and loves this city.” The full time councillor has a 16year-old son and her husband, Jack sadly passed away last year. “I know Jack would have been very proud of me. I also know that I couldn’t have achieved what I have achieved in life without him. Ultimately, I am the people’s servant – and that will be at the heart of everything I do as Lord Mayor.” Cllr Sullivan is also a talented vocalist in her own right. She sang on stage at the Philharmonic Hall with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra in 2008 at a special concert to honour the city’s best pub singers. She also scooped the ‘Councillor Idol’ award in 2009 for her rendition of Cole Porter’s ‘Every Time We Say Goodbye, in aid of the Lord Mayor’s charities.

Vicky Wray and fiancé Rob Williams recently moved into a modern threebedroom home at Gleeson’s Montreal Gardens development in Huyton, Merseyside.
We both grew up nearby so we were keen to stay near our families but still wanted to be close to the buzz of the city centre and be near the motorway network so we could have a quick commute to work. Huyton ticked all the boxes plus it’s exciting to see all the changes happening locally in Stockbridge Village. New shops and cafes are popping up everywhere and they have just reopened the leisure centre, which is great. It really feels like an ‘up and coming area’.
We considered a number of new build developments but nothing compared to Montreal Gardens. Some of the developments we went to seemed very overcrowded yet Montreal Gardens is much more spacious with plenty of open spaces and off street parking so you don’t find cars clogging up the roads. There is also a real mix of people moving in, from young couples like us to families and older couples. Everybody is very friendly and there is a lovely community feel.

Initially we didn’t think we would be able to afford a brand new home but Sandy, Gleeson’s sales negotiator at Montreal Gardens, was really helpful and explained that they offered a number of schemes to help first time buyers like us purchase a new home. We took advantage of the Aspire scheme, which meant that Gleeson matched the 5 per cent deposit we had already saved, paid £500 towards our legal fees and paid our valuation fee.
We wanted a house, which would suit us as a couple but, had the space to raise a family in the future. We decided to buy the Napoli three-bedroom home as it has plenty of living and storage space. The spacious kitchen diner is great for entertaining and we love the lounge with French doors to the rear garden. Upstairs, we have three good-sized bedrooms, one with an ensuite, which is a real luxury. Our travels are our biggest interior inspiration. We have collected a number of pictures and souvenirs during our time abroad and it’s great that I now have a home to showcase them in. The didgeridoo reminds us of the time we spent in Australia. We saw the knife block in Selfridges but shopped around and paid less from an internet site. We also splashed out and bought a new sofa with a ‘snuggle’ chair, which fits beautifully in our new lounge. We are looking forward to having BBQs and entertaining friends over the summer in our new garden and we are saving hard for our fairy tale wedding and honeymoon next summer.

After 15 years in the wilderness pop’s Prince Charming is back. The most iconic figure of the post punk era Adam Ant – real name Stuart Goddard – earned global success and a cult following with singles like Antmusic, but in recent years also hit the headlines for his ongoing battle with depression. Now raring to stand and deliver he’s about to launch a 14 date tour and play in a string of summer festivals including Rebellion in Blackpool. He reveals to Your Move what audiences can expect.
INTERVIEW BY EMMA PINCH
What can we expect from Adam Ant on tour in 2011? I haven’t sung for 15 years and I’ve established a new band and a new look. There are three girls, three boys and me. We’re going to play everything from my repertoire, including some rare stuff from my early period. I’ve been to Liverpool a number of times, but this is the first in a long time. I played at Eric’s, when the Human League and The Teardrop Explodes were around. What happened to the dandy man with the stripe across his nose? I like to go forward – I’ve got a very low boredom threshold. I’ve got a new character, the Blueblack Hussar, from the name of my album, The Blueblack Hussar in Marrying the Gunner’s Daughter. He’s the character who started in 1980 with a stripe across his nose and I thought, what would he look like 32 years later? He was born as a sort of war torn character, used to a sort of sartorial correctness. I imagine him as a French hussar who walked to Moscow and had a fight. He’s older, he’s harder, they killed him, but he can’t be killed – he’s like the Terminator. He’s me coming back to life. You practically created the New Romantic movement. What does style 36 Your Move
mean to you? Style isn’t about money it’s about consistency. It’s about wearing something no one else is wearing. People thought punk was about safety pins but it was all over by then. [Dressing up] is escapism for me and the audience. You need it. The shirts I wore in 1981 were representations of those worn in the Charge of the Light Brigade in the1790s. I’m releasing a menswear line with Pimpernel (a clothing line that specialises in 18th century inspired pieces) and I’ve been going to museums in Paris to look at drawings. I’m taking elements of what I created in the past too. You’ve been vocal about your bipolar diagnosis. How has the condition influenced your career? I have a problem with the term bipolar. I’d rather be nuts. You’ve got to be crazy to do what I do. If you look at people termed bipolar I can’t think of anyone who hasn’t had it who’s any good. You set out to make a success of things but you don’t quite know what is involved. I was just exhausted. I became a cyborg with flesh over the top. It was not having anyone behind me saying, ‘have a rest now’ and I ended up in a nut house. I am up and down because to write songs there has to be dark and light. You have to have passion. MTV voted you sexiest man in America in 1983. Do you still have that massive female following? Not really. It got crazy. I got 60,000 letters a day. Maybe I’ve got that to look forward to. I think I’ll be able to deal with it.

Ant acted in Derek Jarman’s punk film Jubilee in 1977 and with his band released first album Dirk Wears White Socks in 1979. In 1980 Kings of the Wild Frontier, sparked Antmania across the UK. Prince Charming with Stand & Deliver enjoyed similar success. The band split in 1982 and Adam went on to solo success with Goody Two Shoes. He hung up his mic to concentrate on acting in the US, appearing in shows like Northern Exposure and Tales from the Crypt. In 2006 he released his autobiography, Stand and Deliver, and 2010 marked his return to live music.

SOLAR POWER At the bottom of the garden... Every year I am faced with the same dilemma. We have no outside lighting in the garden and as a family we enjoy eating outside on summer evenings. I usually end up with lots of candles on the table but with two small children this causes its own problems. Of course the best solution would be to install outside lighting, but at the moment we have a limited budget and couldn’t afford this additional expense. Do you have any solutions that could restore peace to our household and let us enjoy the beautiful summer evenings once again?
Have you got any ideas how I could create a sanctuary for adults at the bottom of our garden? I would ideally love to have a space were we could relax and entertain guests without them having to dodge footballs, splashes from the paddling pool, or being chased by bicycles. I adore the idea of an outside room but have no idea how to create such a space. Do you have any suggestions how to create or where to buy such a room? GET TOGETHER Solar lighting seems to be the perfect answer for your question. This form of lighting is relatively stress free and is a very safe option to use around little ones. It costs less and is easier to install than traditional outdoor lighting and doesn’t involve burying cables around the rest of your garden and also there would be no increase to your energy bills. I have found these fantastic lights in IKEA that I think would be perfect for you. Each light costs £22.46. The Solvinden solar powered table lamp is 14cm high and comes in four different colour ways. I love the lime green lamp and think this would look great in a garden day or night. We have recently had a raised stone, semi circular patio created in the corner of our garden. It is the perfect location for an outdoor table and chairs. What style of table do you think would suit the space the best? We like entertaining and would like the table to seat 10. An oval table or circular would work particularly well in this raised area. I love the Venezia table and chairs from BHS which can accommodate up to 10 people. THE MUSIC ROUND UP Never disappointing, the live music scene in Liverpool has something for everyone over the next few months. Former Supertramp frontman Roger Hodgson plays The Philharmonic on May 29, The Wicked Whispers launch their first EP at The Kazimier on June 4. The talented producer and singer James Blake will perform at LGoS on the 5th. Ladytron are back at St Georges Hall on June 10 and ‘mesh’ musicians KOF will play 02 Academy on the 25th. American pop punksters Blink 182 have been rescheduled to play the Echo Arena on July 12 or enjoy some hip hop from NDubz on July 21st. And finish off with Blondie at the O2 Academy on August 1.
HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS: PART 2 The highly anticipated conclusion to the Harry Potter franchise is finally here - out in cinemas on July 15. My favourite with... EAST 17’S TONY MORTIMER Original boybanders East 17 were London’s edgy answer to Take That. Their pop/rap sound saw the four lads from Walthamstow rack up 18 top 20 singles with hits like House of Love and Let It Rain and sold more than 20 million records worldwide.
