Chris Hartley, who owns a car valeting business, and wife Emma, a schoolteacher, moved to a fourbedroom home in the new development of Ellergreen, in Norris Green, last week. They bought the £150,000 home through HomeBuy Direct.
We got married last July, and found out we were pregnant not long after so we were trying to save up for a house. We both grew up in Norris Green, so we’re comfortable with the area. We didn’t think we would like new builds but we were hugely surprised. We loved it as soon as we saw the show home. When we saw the house, it was just a shell, the interior hadn’t been built yet. I wanted a bright kitchen so we settled on grey tiles, and a lime green scheme. We had a big wooden dining table from our old home but it just wouldn’t have gone, so we chose a new glass one.
We got a lot of our furniture and accessories from Dunelm Mill, in Switch Island. It’s quite hard to find the right shade you want because in the high street, like at Next, they all come in standard shades - we found the kettle and toaster on Ebay and the clock was from Argos. The garden is massive and we had it all turfed the week before we moved in, so that’s starting to grow. When we lived in Tuebrook the garden was a yard and tiny, it’s great to have a proper garden.
It’s been hard decorating for the baby’s room because we decided not to find out the sex of the baby until birth. The wallpaper is coming in from Mamas and Papas, and we’re going to decorate it in the Zeddy and Parsnip scheme, with yellows and cream.
The curtains aren’t supposed to be curtains - they’re fly screens for the door. We didn’t want heavy curtains as we wanted to let as much light in so the fringed curtains fit in really well. We’ve gone for a black and silver colour scheme in the living room. The light shade from B&Q is really lovely, it did take about an hour to put together because of all of the wires.
The bathroom wasn’t meant to be this big, the master bedroom was meant to have an en-suite but we wanted the bathroom to be bigger so we asked the builders to take out the en-suite and make the space bigger

Changing shopping habits and the recession have seen a pile up of high street casualties – with women’s clothes retailer Jane Norman the latest to hit financial difficulties.
What is the future of the high street – and do we even care? “The times are changing and you’ve just got to go along with it. Some shops closing down is a natural progression if they can’t match what others offer. I shop anywhere and where I shop mainly depends on price. If you can get something cheaper from a supermarket, then you go there. If I was an internet user I would probably do my shopping that way.”

The auction room was filled with budding investors and entrepreneurs, with many getting involved in some competitive bidding wars against the 47 lots that were available. TALENT IN THE CITY
For theatre-goers Bill Kenwright’s Evita was the highlight of the 2008 celebrations, and with the highly anticipated musical returning to Liverpool this week we talk to the masterful Earl Carpenter on his upcoming performance as Juan Perón. The West End musical theatre star, a protégée of Bill, will return to the Empire after a 15-year absence from Liverpool, performing in the seminal Evita, followed by Three Phantoms at the Philharmonic and We Will Rock You at the Empire in the summer. It’s going to be a season of musical explosion.
Interview by DINA KARIM How does it feel to be back in Liverpool after a 15-year absence? I haven’t actually been back to the city since performing Her Benny and then this year I’m going to be performing in Liverpool three times, which is a complete coincidence but will be very fun. I love going to different places, the venues, with different audiences and experiencing their reactions. Tell us a little about how you got started in musical theatre and your relationship with Bill Kenwright. I went to college, but I didn’t go to drama classes or anything I just loved acting, I didn’t train in musical theatre I trained as an actor. I went to college when the big greats were coming out like Phantom of the Opera and Evita. In fact when I first started college, my dad bought me the double cassette of Phantom of the Opera, so it was sort of the first musical I really got engrossed in. I started my first company in Bournemouth and I did one man shows. Six weeks later and Bill gave me my first break in Robin, Prince of Sherwood. I haven’t actually seen Bill yet, the first time we will see him is when we get to Liverpool, because he’s been very busy with the Wizard of Oz. I’ve been so lucky for so long working on big shows with millions of pounds of funding.
This role is a little different to your previous roles in The Phantom of the Opera and We Will Rock You, where you’re hidden behind a costume and makeup. How did you prepare for such a ‘real’ character? I don’t think it differs from the façade of hiding behind makeup, the demonstrative figure of the dictator comes with a degree of façade as well. In this production, it’s not until the end when Eva dies that the pretence comes down. I’m not an actor who prepares, who looks to the back story. I think it takes away from the spontaneity and it means I can bring something different to the role each night because I’m not very good at replicating everything each night. How does it feel to be playing this giant of a politician? I’m a great believer in not knowing too much because my bible is what’s being presented and finding the right way of telling that story without being too influenced. Only two weeks after the Evita tour leaves Liverpool, you’re back to do Three Phantoms at the Philharmonic. Tell us a little about the show. It is about three different guys who played the Phantom of the Opera, it’s very ‘Rat Pack’ - it’s about our relationship with the industry, with Rebecca Caine [who originated the role of Cossette], and about our roles as the phantoms. It’s a very fun evening, we usually have a 21-piece orchestra, but we will be singing with 73 in the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra - it’s going to be extraordinary. I’ll then be back with We Will Rock You in September where I will be playing General Khashoggi. You’re not only an actor, you also have your
own production company and an online TV entertainment channel, Reelkandi.tv. How did your side projects come about? I’m a great believer in longevity, and there’s a lot of waiting between jobs and since I had always enjoyed the creative side of theatre as well this venture was perfect. I wanted to find another experience for theatre because the experience for an actor finishes when the curtain comes down. Ginger Boy Productions has now turned into an enormous company, and the TV channel streams to 50 million people worldwide. Evita at Liverpool Empire Theatre, from June 20 - 25. I have a wonderful cast iron fireplace in my living room, which on the occasional winter day I do light. The problem is that for the rest of the year I suffer with draughts from the fireplace and also soot and debris falling into the room. The chimney balloon is a plastic pillow; it will stop draughts whilst still allowing ventilation and can also prevent soot and debris falling into the room. They’re really easy to install and for days when you want to use the fire, you can easily deflate them. If you forget the balloon is there and light a fire, it will not cause any problems, just simply shrivel and deflate. The perfect solution to your dilemma.
The plant pots in the conservatory and outside are looking very tired and old. I’m at a loss what to do. It would be really expensive to replace all the pots inside and out with new ones. Do you have any suggestions how we could give old pots a new lease of life?

We are in the process of converting the cupboard under the stairs into a small cloakroom. We have really limited space as you can imagine. Could you please give us some advice as to what type of basin and toilet, works in a small space and will look modern and contemporary? I really like the Status Square range from Bauhaus; it’s a contemporary and minimal design, all of which can be wall mounted. I think considering your problem about lack of space, wall mounted designs would be worth you considering; they look uncluttered and are easy to clean. With wall mounted toilets the cistern is hidden giving the illusion of extra space. You could take the look even further with wall mounted taps, which would give you a very minimalistic and exciting cloakroom design.

Liverpool is set to get the world theatre premiere of classic British film The Ladykillers, with a host of stars including BAFTA and Oscar winner Peter Capaldi. Capaldi, cast as Professor Marcus, originally played by Alec Guinness, is most famous for his role as foul-mouthed spin-doctor Malcolm, in The Thick of It. The Ladykillers has been adapted for theatre by Father Ted writer Graham Linehan, and will be directed by Sean Foley. Sean said: "This wonderful theatre, which used to be a music hall, is a fantastic setting to do The LadyKillers, which promises to be an exceptionally funny evening in the theatre." Ben Miller, who is best known as one half of the comedy duo Armstrong and Miller, and James Fleet, seen in The Vicar of Dibley, also star. Spire’s Winning Recipe Wavertree restaurant Spire has received national acclaim after being crowned The Good Food Guide Restaurant of the Year Award 2011 for the North West. The award means the restaurant on Church Road, which specialises in modern British and European cuisine, will go through to the national finals of the Good Food Guide Restaurant of the Year 2011. Winning dishes customers voted for included Smoked Ham Hock and Foie Gras with Piccalilli and Watercress Salad. Owner Adam Locke whose brother Matt is head chef, said: “We’re especially elated because nobody in Liverpool has ever won the award before.” The winner announced on June 23. A spectacular visual and audio feast will mark the centenary of the Liver Building next month. The three-night celebration will feature a cutting edge 3D Son et Lumiere show as its highlight, paying homage to 800 years of city history. Dazzling images will be projected on the Liver Building and also the new Museum of Liverpool, which will have extended opening hours, from 10am to 10pm. All three evenings will kick off with live music. Blues singer Connie Lush taking to the stage on Friday and the RLPO on Saturday. MUM RISES TO BAKING CHALLENGE A Liverpool mum has stepped up to the plate and bought the fresh food business she formerly was employed by. Jenny Cowan worked as manager at Food To Go at the Spar supermarket on Sefton Road, Litherland, and when the previous franchise owner announced her departure in February she decided to take the plunge herself.
The business, which sells freshly prepared bread, cakes, sandwiches, pasta and sausage rolls has since seen staff numbers boosted from three to five and opening hours to include Sundays. “It was a challenge for me but I’m really glad I did it,” said Jenny, who has one daughter. “I was one of 10 children growing up so I’m used to keeping busy.” Sandwiches start at £1.40 and pasta dishes at £2.

LIVERPOOL ART PRIZE arkus Soukup was pronounced the winner of the Liverpool Art Prize 2011, at a glitzy party at Metal Gallery, at Edge Hill Station, on June 1. The German-born new media and sound artist beat a shortlist of four to the award, with the panel choosing his new media installation exploring how images and language communicate ideas. Soukup won a place at the Walker Art Gallery, where his work will be displayed within the next year, as well as £2,000. Brendan Lyons, won the £1000 ‘People’s Choice’ prize, chosen by public voting.
