KINGS DOCK MILL The Kings Dock Mill Apartments are designed around two interlocking courtyards allowing each apartment to take full advantage of the dual aspect nature of the development; the internal courtyards provide good security and privacy, and maximise the views of the City, Pierhead and Marina. The entire building is articulated by a series of steps in the elevations creating individual building blocks with active frontages. These active street frontages are fundamental to the principle of linkage through ‘THE’ Baltic Triangle between the City and the Waterfront, offering a safe environment to live and work. HOT TOPIC British interest in buying property abroad has surged in past few months as savvy expats take advantage of rock bottom prices in their dream destination. The weak economies of Portugal and Spain has led to a rush of people looking for cheap property, with the tax breaks of Cyprus making it a welcome haven and the picturesque homes of Hungary, priced at less than what it costs to buy a new car, remaining an attractive prospect.

Spain A Spanish home is the essence of a property abroad. It has remained popular with Britons for over three decades, from the small apartments and fincas that offer a quaint lifestyle to the palatial beach properties. Spain's pleasant, healthy climate and wide selection of properties make it the most popular destination for an overseas property. Fincas are plots of land outside of towns and villages, which can range from tumbledown farmhouses to beautiful modern villas and generally come with a lot of land. From the cosmopolitan islands to the TOWIE favourite Marbella, Spanish property remains a hot investment - although, following a slight dip in the housing market it is more of a matter of lifestyle than investment. With values having fallen by anything up to 50 per cent and sometimes more, there are fantastic bargains to be had. There has never been a better time to buy your dream holiday home or acquire an attractive property investment. Local agent Sutton Kersh Abroad specialises in holiday homes and investment properties in Spain, the Canary Islands and Hungary. Paul Sutton, managing director at Sutton Kersh, commented: “Sales in foreign property has suffered a significant decline due to the economic crisis. However,

whilst this has caused problems for developers and property owners who bought at the top of the markets, it has created a fantastic opportunity for those waiting to buy a holiday home abroad or to invest in foreign property.” Sutton Kersh Abroad is currently promoting property next to The Duquesa golf course, near the Puerto de La Duquesa, and property near the quaint village of Manilva, five minutes from Malaga.

Hungary The rich, multi-cultural lifestyle of Hungary is a great draw for Britons and with property prices at a fraction of Spanish prices, it comes top in

It’s a strong economy since the fall of Communism, and as a member of the European Union, the road to Hungary is one of the more secure ones in Europe - with a road also littered with extinct volcanoes, ruined castles and vineyards it is easy to see the attraction.

Cyprus With a flight time from Britain of four and a half hours, Cyprus may not be quite as accessible as Spain. However given its charm and climate, it is clear why investors, and those simply looking for a second home, are prepared to go the extra mile. Cyprus has a strong draw because of its robust economy,

There has never been a better time to buy your dream holiday home or acquire an attractive property investment.

our list of Europe’s hotspots. As an alternative to Spain, Hungary provides a great value country-style holiday close to the tourist areas around Lake Balaton. Holiday homes are available from as little as £15,000 and offer great value for money.

low risk due to a strong legal system, extremely low taxation, excellent infrastructure and the familiarity for British people of the island - and of course the superb weather. As a result of it being a British colony until 1960, English is widely spoken, the legal,

banking and business systems are also very similar and they even drive on the same side of the road. When buying a property using a specialist in a particular country who can hold your hand and demystify the process of buying a property abroad greatly helps. They can manage all the unfamiliar aspects of an overseas purchase such as selection of a property to suit your needs, accessing finance for a mortgage, explaining currency transfers and finding tried and trusted professional advisors in the country. Then, once you have bought the property they can help you furnish it and let it out to generate income. One such specialist is InvestinCyprus.com, part of Bold Spirit based in Liverpool, they started out as a sales agent in Cyprus in 2003 and are now developers. The Grove Spa Resort is their first complete development - featuring self-contained apartments and townhouses, situated in Mazotos, a peaceful traditional Cypriot village midway between Larnaca and Limassol on the south coast. Stephanie Fairhurst, director of InvestinCyprus.com, commented: “The Grove Spa resort is very popular and we have many clients from Liverpool and the North West who have bought there. Surrounded by groves of olive and orange trees it is perfect for a getaway in rural tranquillity but not too far from the tourist hotspots if you fancy a change. “Facilities on site include four large outdoor pools, two giant Jacuzzi pools, tennis court, gym, dance studio, indoor hydrotherapy suite including sauna, steam room and heated pool, cafe bar and a full service health spa with seven treatment rooms.” Of course, it’s not just the sunshine that makes the Greek part of Cyprus a haven for Britons. Spend more than 183 days on the island, in one financial year, and you become a tax resident, liable for as little as five per cent income tax. Your Move 25

Museum of Liverpool Throws Open Doors The Museum of Liverpool finally threw open its doors this month attracting a staggering 12,000 people on its first day. Hundreds queued on the Pier Head for their first glimpse inside the £72million institution, the first newly built national museum to open in a century. The museum was officially opened by six-year-old schoolboy Finn O’Hare from South Liverpool. Before he cut the ribbon the crowd listened as Dr David Fleming, director of National Museums Liverpool told why the boy had been picked over some of the city’s more famous sons or daughters. He explained that a year ago Finn had written to them saying: ‘Dear

Mr and Mrs in charge of the museum. I am very excited about when the new museum will open. I am good at opening things. Please can I open the museum?’ Dr Fleming said: “We ended up thinking that’s the perfect thing because the museum’s not about famous people, it’s about the people of Liverpool.” The museum is home to 6,000 objects illustrating the social history of the city. Exhibits include the first Ford Anglia off the Halewood production line in 1963, the stage where John Lennon and Paul McCartney first met in 1957 and a life size Liver Bird. More than 750,000 visitors are expected to visit each year.

MINI AUCTION FOR BEGINNER BIDDERS Leading estate agent and auctioneer Venmore is to stage a special mini auction at this year’s Merseyside Landlord Expo.

Recent Venmore Auction

Venmore, the headline sponsor of the event, will hold an extra auction in addition to their usual six auctions throughout the year at the Expo on 22 September. The auction will profile five top buy-to-let properties to give an exciting taste of the bidding experience to new investors. Nick Ball, head of Venmore auctions, commented: “The taster auction will be an ideal opportunity for experienced

investors and buyers to seek out a selection of hot properties. With our September auction held on the 14 September and the Expo event on 22 September – it’s going to be a great month for the property sector.” The Expo, held at the Crowne Plaza in Liverpool city centre, attracts more than 40 exhibitors from six borough councils all showcasing specialised services to landlords and property owners from six borough councils. HOMESURE JOINS TWITTERATI Buying a house in Childwall has become a whole lot easier now that property agent HOMEsure is promoting a range of homes on Twitter and Facebook. Sales and lettings have significantly increased in recent months following HOMEsure’s promotion of homes on the internet, from regular property updates on Facebook to promotion on Twitter. Nick Stott, managing director, said: “We rented a flat through Twitter last week and we gained a new client from New Zealand after he saw one of our adverts on Google. You can also watch our adverts on YouTube.” HOMEsure has also appointed Helen Bowers as their new branch manager to handle the increase in both sales and lettings. Taylor Wimpey to Offer FirstBuy

The Deck in Runcorn

Taylor Wimpey is set to help first time buyers get on the property ladder by offering the Government’s newly launched FirstBuy scheme on a range of homes across Merseyside. FirstBuy, a joint loan of 20 per cent from the government and Taylor Wimpey with only 5 per cent deposit, is now available on selected homes at The Deck in Runcorn, Speakman Gardens in

Prescot and Cunningham Grange in St Helens. Sam Williams, regional sales and marketing director for Taylor Wimpey North West, said: “We believe that this scheme will make all the difference to those who can afford the monthly repayments on a mortgage but not the hefty deposit.” At Speakman Gardens (0845 071 8832) a two bedroom apartment can be purchased through the scheme for just £79,560, with just a £4,973 deposit. A one bedroom

apartment at The Deck (0845 071 8713) can be snapped up for just £58,360 and a deposit of £3,648, and at Cunningham Grange (0845 672 3872) a three bedroom home for £123,960 just needs a deposit of £7,748. EPC DEADLINE LOOMS Landlords, letting agencies and sales agents will be required to publish a full Energy Efficiency Certificate before a property is advertised from October 1, warns Louis Anastasiou, director of Andrew Louis. Louis said his sales, lettings and property management company would be leading the field in complying with the new legislation. 28 Your Move

The new requirement takes away the 28 day period of grace previously offered to sales and lettings agents to get an EPC carried out. The legislation, part of a 2009 EU Directive, also compels the seller or landlord to supply the full EPC certificate, rather than just a rating as was previously the case. The compulsory EPC is aimed at furnishing new tenants or buyers with a property’s energy efficiency credentials, and help reduce the country’s carbon footprint.

“The requirement to get an EPC done before a property is marketed is the biggest change,” said Louis. “There may be a question mark over how many buyers or tenants actually take the EPC into consideration when choosing a property, but it is legislation that has to be complied with. “As a company we hope to be providing full EPCs well before the law comes into force.” Louis Anastasiou

Bairstow Eves opens in Liverpool National estate agent Bairstow Eves has arrived in Liverpool to offer the professionalism of a big brand with the intimate customer care of a local agent and only one per cent plus VAT for vendors. The new branch, near the Catholic Cathedral on Mount Pleasant, opened under the helm of managing director Mike Chrysokhou, who ran his own lettings company for five years before leading the Liverpool team. He said: "As a franchise we own the business, we care about the business more than we would if we were working for a big brand. It makes you feel like you have more control of the company but with the big brand of Bairstow Eves and Countrywide, the parent

Show apartment turns heads

company, behind you. We go the extra mile. "We took a long time to train our staff. We are already fourth on the Rightmove listings, which means we're able to compete with established companies. This is mainly due to the large amount of properties that have come through us. We believe there's life in the housing market there are still many people who want to buy and sell houses." For more information on Bairstow Eves visit their Liverpool branch at 107 Mount Pleasant, telephone on 0151 707 7777 or visit www.bairstoweves.co.uk

Interior Designer turns TV Star Interior designer Elaine Cunningham is set to show off her fabulous home in the upcoming ITV series May The Best House Win, where she will compete for a £1,000 prize. The programme, which will air in September, sees the owners of some of Britain’s most interesting and unusual homes compete against each other. The four contestants score each other’s home, based on interior design and hospitality. Elaine, who owns Elaine Cunningham Interiors on Aigburth Road and Chapel Street, said: “I was nervous at first because being on television was completely out of my comfort zone, but once I got into the swing of it after the first day, I grew in confidence.” “The competition gave me a chance to show another side of me, as my house is completely different to my shop. The shop is very glitzy, but my home is very traditional and homely - all the contestants were surprised by how traditional my home was.” Elaine Cunningham

Flat-hunters got a taste of luxury living when St Paul’s Square brand new show apartment opened its doors. At its launch potential homebuyers were treated to a tour of the stunning apartments, which are located in the city’s commercial district close to Moorfields station, had the chance to speak to the developer about buying options available and also gain inspiration on décor. Boasting a large open plan living area, two spacious bedrooms, two bathrooms and south-facing balcony, the show apartment shows off why the selection of one and two bedroom apartments have sold so well since the development launched in 2009. Muse Developments appointed Aintree-based interior design company Design That Room to furnish the apartment. Owner and designer Fran Guinan said: “We’ve gone to town on this show apartment, and have really made the most of the space and the airy feel of the property. The building itself is quite geometric and sharp, so we have softened this by adding warm, neutral tones alongside splashes here and there of vibrant colour and pattern to give it a lift.” The Shared Equity Scheme available at the development has attracted a wealth of would-be buyers. Apartments start at £89, 950 for a one-bedroom apartment or £149, 950 for a twobedroom apartment. Your Move 29

Advice from chartered accountants 0151 228 8977 Property Purchase using a Pension Scheme

Julia Casimo

Q: My husband and I would like to purchase premises for our business costing £275,000. Between us we have old private pensions built up of about £110,000, - can we use these funds towards the purchase? A: The short answer is yes. Self Invested Pension funds such as SIPPs and SSASs are used in many family businesses as a very tax efficient way to purchase commercial property. A SSAS or indeed a syndicated SIPP arrangement allow it’s members (in this case yourself and your husband) to effectively pool their pension resources, Both SIPPs and SSASs can borrow money from the bank (subject to approval), allowing an even greater degree of flexibility. To make an immediate purchase in your case would require some new funds to be put into the pension scheme to make the purchase, but the funding could look like this. £ Transfer of existing pension policies 110,000 New contribution (within current guidelines) 90,000* Bank Borrowing, up to 100,000 Funds available for purchase and stamp duty 300,000 Q: That sounds interesting – but what are the tax advantages? A: The first is the tax relief that you will obtain on the new contribution of £90,000*. If your business is a small limited company this alone should save you corporation tax of £18,000. On an ongoing basis the business will pay market rent which is likely to be around £22,000 per annum to your’ pension fund, again with the business getting tax relief on the payments. As well as the surplus from the annual rental, further pension contributions can be made, at your discretion. The current rules broadly allow for gross contribution of up to £50,000 per person per annum. These would also qualify for tax relief for the business. Eventually as the pension scheme builds up surplus funds either loan repayments can be accelerated and/or further investments can be made. A pension scheme pays no income tax on the rent it receives or capital gains tax when it eventually disposes of the property. An arrangement such as this allows you to take control of your pension planning via a tax efficient, transparent understandable vehicle. Q: Is there anything else we need to think about? A: Yes! There are a number of important legal, taxation and regulatory hurdles which need to be overcome to make this happen. You will need good advice from a suitably qualified firm to help you. As with many decisions you really do need to take independent financial and tax advice. Ask the Expert with Kate Handel Solicitor at Paul Crowley & Co Solicitors

My boyfriend and I have recently bought our first flat together and we have opted to hold the shares as Beneficial Joint Tenants. I understand this to mean if one of us dies, the flat will automatically pass to the survivor. If that is the case – do we still need to make a Will? If so, why?

Q

You are correct in saying that as you have opted to own the flat as Beneficial Joint Tenants, if one of you dies the survivor will be the sole owner of the property. However, this is not a reason for either of you not to make a will. I would strongly recommend that everybody should make a will... A Will gives you control and certainty over who your possessions (called your “Estate”) will go to when you die. If you die without making a Will you will be said to have died “Intestate”. The Estate of a person who dies Intestate is distributed to certain surviving relatives under the Rules of Intestacy. As you are not married, in the eyes of the law you and your boyfriend are seen as co-habitiees and the Rules of Intestacy do not make provisions for co-habitees even where there are no other surviving relatives. If you do not make a Will, then your boyfriend will not benefit from your Estate other than the flat. What if both of you die? Without a Will the flat will go to the people whom the law dictates and not necessarily the people who you would both choose. The only way you can have any control over this is to make a Will. None of us like to think that our relationships may end, however, what would happen if you and your boyfriend where no longer together? It is likely that you would be advised to ‘sever’ the Joint Tenancy. This is a legal procedure which can be undertaken and you do not have to be in agreement for this to take place. Severing the Tenancy would result in you both owning defined shares in the flat. The only way you can then control what happens to your share of the flat is by making a Will. When you make a Will you choose the person who will look after everything after you have passed away. This person is called an Executor. Again, if you do not make a will the law decides this for you and this may result in avoidable worry and distress to members of your family and others who might benefit from your Estate.

HAVE YOUR SAY YOUR VIEWS ON BIG ISSUES “Deleting Milly Dowler’s messages was disgusting and the thought that it might have affected the investigation is terrible. Everyone should be able to keep their personal life to themselves. Celebrities are followed everywhere by paps, so a lot of their lives are on show, but they should be allowed to keep their private life to themselves.”

Daniel Ross Allerton, student

First it was Sienna Miller, then it came to light that murdered Milly Dowler’s phone messages had been hacked. Now the scandal has raged across the worlds of business, politics and police, causing a string of high profile casualties.

In this age of technology can people really expect privacy?

“I don’t commit personal information to gadgets and I’m not interested in the soap opera stuff in papers like the News of the World. Bit I actually think the phone hacking scandal is about more than privacy - it’s to do with something deeply wrong with society at the moment which goes to the highest levels. It’s to do with dishonesty. It’s clear that the whole issue has frightened politicians to death – they are afraid of the dark underbelly of what they’ve been doing coming to light. Politicians have clearly been hand in glove with newspapers and the police, and we are seeing people jump before they are pushed.”

“I think hacking into anyone’s phone, whether they are famous or not, is wrong and the News of the World had to pay the price. Obviously celebrities line up to put their lives on front pages so it is a much more serious issue when it affects ordinary people who are in the news for different reason. On the whole though I think everyone is entitled to his or her privacy.”

Jack Whitely film-maker, Shrewsbury

“Phone hacking is a disgrace and Rupert Murdoch should go down. There’s no excuse for deleting messages from Milly Dowler’s phone, and families of 7/7 victims. I thought phone hacking went out with Watergate, but we find out newspapers have been doing it all along – Gordon Brown knew about it. It’s a worry.”

“I’ve been really interested in the phone hacking issue. Rebecca Brooks should have been sacked because in my opinion she would have known what was going on. People only got interested when normal people started having their phone hacked, but it was completely wrong, even when it was just about celebrities getting hacked. I’m sure it’s much more widespread than just in one paper. I’m glad it’s all coming to light. I’m sure there’s a lot more under the surface too.”

PETER CAPALDI

In what is the jewel in the Liverpool Playhouse new season, the world premiere of the stage adaptation of The Ladykillers is debuting in Liverpool, with charismatic Peter Capaldi in the role of the villainous Professor Marcus. The Academy Award and BAFTA winner is best known for his part as foul-mouthed political spin-doctor Malcolm Tucker in BBC show The Thick of It and film In the Loop. Peter reveals why he is proud of starring in the stage adaptation of the classic Ealing Comedy and how it feels to be back on the stage after a five-year absence.

INTERVIEW BY DINA KARIM The Ladykillers is one of the UK’s most loved films, from the golden age of Ealing Comedy cinema in the 50s. How does it feel to be performing in the first ever stage adaptation, following in the footsteps of Alec Guinness who played Prof. Marcus? In a way it’s difficult to explain the production because it is evoking the spirit of the original without being too true to the letter, it’s a platform of Graham Lineham’s imagination, of Sean Foley’s imagination (director), to rework that material and do it in a way that’s modern but still has the atmosphere of the original. It’s also really, really fun - I mean that’s why we’re really doing it. It’s absolutely gag-packed, it’s a wonderful comic idea that still plays and I think we’ve all just been very lucky to be involved in it. The great thing about reading it was that in spite of it being a real film, I felt this couldn’t have belonged anywhere but on stage.

The cast mainly come from a comedic background - Ben Miller starred in Armstrong and Miller, James Fleet in Four Weddings and a Funeral - was the casting deliberate? I think it’s a joy for an actor in comedy to respond to this material, it sort of feels you’re coming home because everybody is working towards the same ambition - a really entertaining evening. In a way, the show can be summed up as Dr Caligari meets Reservoir Dogs via Upstairs Downstairs, a totally kind of British, kind of mish-mash of style. There’s nobody else who can do this as effectively other than the cast we have who are all very, very experienced in comedy and can plug into this style. It’s a very accessible but quite stylised piece so you need people where that is their business. You’re better known for your role as political spin doctor Malcolm Tucker in BBC sitcom The Thick of It and subsequent film In the Loop, more accurately you’ve become known for your mesmerising swearing rants on the show. Can we expect more in The Ladykillers? No, I never swear, my character never swears in it. I’m not a huge fan of swearing anyway because I think usually it’s just a

short cut to getting a laugh. Known mainly for your TV and film work, how does it feel to be back on stage? Very nervous. Working here is really scary but at the same time I love to be out here in front of people and working on a piece that I feel so confident about with the script, the director and the cast. I couldn’t want for a better production to get back to the theatre. Yes, it is scary it’s about five years since I was last on stage but I really feel a strange kind of confidence about this project. I don’t mean just about my contribution in it, but I mean about the show itself, it has a life of its own. It’s up and running before we’ve even started on it so I couldn’t want for a better production to join. The Ladykillers is the tale of eccentric Mrs Wilberforce, who when she decides to let her spare room, the mysterious Professor Marcus moves in; but he may not be the fine upstanding gentleman he appears to be. As she provides an endless supply of tea and cake to the Professor and his motley crew of ‘musicians’, how long can the gang continue to pull the crocheted wool over this seemingly naïve little old lady’s eyes? The Ladykillers will premier on November 3 - 8, at the Liverpool Playhouse.

The public poured in for their first glimpse inside the strangely shaped box that has been taking shape on the Pier Head over the past five

years. And they weren’t disappointed. The first hundred inside after the 10am opening on July 18 were golden ticket holders, then many of the 100,000 Liverpool residents who helped provide input and exhibits for the space flocked in. Former nurse Ann Collette Feenan from Woolton provided commentary for a Sefton General Hospital exhibit, which features in the People’s Republic section. “There is just so much to see here, it’s fantastic,” she said. “We are definitely going to come back for a repeat visit so we can see everything.” The museum is open 10am-5pm daily, with 10pm late opening from 22nd – 24th July.

INTERIOR DESIGN

Ask the expert With over ten years’ experience in the interior design business, Sharon Armor is poised to answer all your design queries from DIY disasters to decorating dilemmas.

FABULOUS Benches with city chic FABRICS It must be a least five years ago now, that we invested in a beautiful sofa and two armchairs for the lounge. The furniture, which we love, is very traditional in design, handmade in England with a hair stuffed front, sprung arms, wooden legs and brass castors. It is so comfortable and really suits are requirements. We are changing the colours in the room and would like to change the fabric on the sofa and chair. We would like the fabric to have a traditional design, maybe with colours of cornflower blue or natural shades. Would you be able to suggest a fabric that would look elegant on our beautiful furniture? I would definitely recommend fabric from the new Zoffany embroidery collection, Frangipani. The collection encompasses both traditional and contemporary designs of natural forms and achieves the beautiful colour ways and textures from a variety of different embroidery techniques and styles. The design Fig Tree meets upholstery standards for domestic use and would look inspiring on your traditional handmade English furniture. The design is of flat leaves and coloured in various shades of blue. www.zoffany.com/pages/products/pro ducts_fabrics-detail/frangipani/2

Do you know where we can purchase a two-seater bench without cushions that we can leave out on the balcony of our city centre apartment? When we have looked we can only find park bench styles, these are often not very comfortable and ideally we would like the piece of furniture to be a contemporary deisgn, that reclines. Look no further than the unusual, fun and contemporary design of the Luxembourg Low Duo Armchair. This unique bench is available in twenty four different colourways and being light weight would be perfect for a balcony. The bench is available from www.barbedsop.co.uk and is made by Fermob. www.barbedshop.co.uk/shop/products/luxembourglow-duo-armchair.aspx

BADGE IDEA I am looking after my two granddaughters during the school holidays. The girls, aged seven and nine, are great fun, but need entertaining. I am planning lots of outings to keep them occupied. But whilst we are out having fun, Mum is busy at work! I thought it would be a great idea for the girls to make mum a present or paint a picture of our summer adventures. Do you have any other suggestions? I have spotted some fantastic button badge canvases, which I think look fantastic and would be fun for the girls to make during their school summer holidays. The main objective would be to allow the girls to make a collection of badges from all of your adventures. The girls could even make their own. When the collection has built up, its time to get to work on a canvas. I would make an outline in pencil of a simple design then fill in the design by attaching the badges to the canvas. I think it would make the perfect picture for mum and would remind the girls forever of the wonderful summer they spent with you and all the exciting places you visited. www.rockettstgeorge.co.uk/brigitte-herrod-vintage-button-badge-heart-canvas-exclusive-torockett-st-george-2956-p.asp

EATING OUT

X-Factor Fever Sweeps City

Food with a View

Diners at newly opened Matou will be perfectly placed for a tasty view of events on the Waterfront this summer.

X-Factor season is officially underway as the judges from the hit ITV1 show arrived in Liverpool to find the UK’s next singing sensation. Take That’s Gary Barlow, Louis Walsh, Destiny’s Child singer Kelly Rowland and N Dubz star Tulisa were greeted by thousands at the Echo Arena. The judges were back in the city to

watch the remaining 40 hopefuls perform. Gary Barlow said: “It's been so funny watching Kelly getting used to the Scouse wit and there's been a lot of it. Liverpool has been the best place and the talent has been great." Kelly Rowland said people in Liverpool were more prepared. “Their song choices have been better... but when it's bad, it's bad." Tulisa Contostavlos celebrated her

birthday in Liverpool. She said: "It's amazing in Liverpool. I couldn't have had my birthday anywhere better." Louis Walsh paid tribute to the city’s great musical tradition. “The people are friendly and there are a lot of good Irish people in Liverpool,” he said. Check out the X-Factor audience’s Street Style on page 55.

The pan Asian eatery, situated above the ferry terminal at the Pier Head, has a spacious roof top terrace where diners will be able to savour unrivalled view of events like Waterfront Reflection and the Matthew Street Festival. The restaurant specialises in fusion dishes from China, Malaysia, Thailand and Japan, with dishes like Guangdong Sweet and Sour Chicken (pictured). Co-owner of Matou Billy Riley said: “There’s so much going on this summer, especially around the Pier Head, and at Matou guests will be able to enjoy a ring-side view.” For more information visit www.matou.co.uk

Talented professionals like Mike McCartney and fellow photographer Mark McNulty will choose a winner from each category plus an

Reflection on the Waterfront

Festival of Archaeology

The Pier Head | July 22-24

World Museum | Until August 1

---

---

Three days of visual and audio spectacle celebrate 100 years of waterfront, in particular the iconic Liver Building. Cutting edge technology will create a visual first as the buildings of the waterfront are used as a canvas for vibrant light shows. There is also music from Connie Lush and the RLPO Takes place July 22-24, 10am-10pm.

Discover Britain’s fascinating past as the region’s museums celebrate the Festival of British Archaeology. There are sessions identifying ancient Egyptian artefacts, a chance to meet ‘real’ Romans at the Weston Discovery centre and to learn the secrets of tree rings at a dendochronology workshop. There’s plenty outdoors too, such as a walk round a re-constructed dig at Tam O’Shanters in Prenton, Wirral.

For more information visit www.liverpoolonthewaterfront.co.uk or call 0151 233 2008.

we’ve decided to share. To start we have a specialist pate, Pork with Orange and Cointreau (£4.95). It’s butter smooth and laced with tangy citrus flavours. Other varieties include Chicken Liver Pate with Old Top and Ginger Ale. We also share a Croque Monsieur (£3.95), in honour of the French setting. More good old British cheese and ham toastie than elaborate béchamel sauce swamped bite, it’s nonetheless at the very top of the toastie league. Doorstop thick, melted cheese pours out in a satisfactory ooze, and top quality ham is generously supplied. My Hot Chocolate Royale (£2.50) brims over with cream and chocolate shavings, causing my six hour old diet to crumble in an instant. “The pate is particularly delicious,” says Jeanette. “The fruit flavours really stand out.” Set up in Victorian times by pioneering priest Father James Nugent, Nugent Care has continued to provide out an extensive safety net for the vulnerable and disadvantaged in the region. It currently runs seven residential homes for adults, giving nursing and specialist

care for people with dimentia, brain injuries, neurological disorders and physical and mental disabilities. They also run children’s residential care homes, a day support service, a drug intervention service, and a raft of other support facilities that fulfil a vital role in Liverpool, St Helens and even Wigan. Sports days are a fun and vital way of raising funds, including golf, cycling and on August 14 there’s a Zumba day at Mossley Hill Athletics Club. The recession has been a mixed blessing for Nugent Care. More people are shopping there but people are giving less. What is the strangest thing she’s been given? “A mouse. I think it had crawled into the bag. Otherwise, electrical items are about the only thing we can’t sell or recycle.” Reinforced by our sunny slice of France, it’s back into the soggy English summer.
