Once the reserve of the rich, the Canning suburbs are uniquely a suburb within the city centre of Liverpool, only a walk away from Liverpool ONE. The leafy surroundings, running the length of Canning Street, from Falkner Street to Upper Parliament Street including Hope Street, have had their share of ups and downs. But a steady growth in the property market as well as a stringent agenda of regeneration in L8 has seen the once former beauty queen of Liverpool return to its dizzying heights.

The infamous riots of the 1980s though, put a spotlight on the neglected area widely known as the ‘red light district’. 30 years later and the beautifully converted Georgian and Regency properties have led to it becoming once again one of the most expensive postcodes in Liverpool. “L8 has changed considerably over the last 20 years,” says Shannon Conway, senior associate at Jones Lang LaSalle. “Regeneration continues along Princes Avenue, important work which is undertaken by local Housing Associations. The result is a mix of housing and tenure, which has led to a vibrant community housing students,

HOT TOPIC Henri, both of whom dedicated poems to the area as well as the sculptor Tom Murphy and exBeatles drummer Ringo Starr. “The area nicknamed ‘the Cultural Quarter’ is definitely proving very popular with not only young professionals, but we have also seen a great deal of young families display great interest in the area,” said Rob Farnham, chief executive of Venmore. “And this is down to the change of perception and regeneration that has taken place, with the Falkner Square green park area ideal for families to enjoy. Unfortunately the larger properties don’t often come on the market but when they do, they receive a great deal of interest.”

Falkner Square - the Georgian Quarter If there was a pinnacle point to the Canning suburbs, it wouldn’t necessarily be its namesake Canning Street rather the Georgian-style Falkner Square and gardens at its heart. As a Green Flag garden, it is treasured as both a local neighbourhood park and a conservation feature, representing one of the earliest public spaces in Liverpool. “The biggest improvement to the L8 area since the riots can be seen in the Georgian Quarter, Canning Street, Falkner Square area,” said Phil Lawton, director of Sutton Kersh. “In the late 1990`s the first luxury apartments began to appear. Demand for them was high and values increased rapidly, particularly after the City of Culture announcement in 2003. Since then the Georgian Quarter has become fashionable again and deservedly so. “The Grade II listed townhouses are stunning and a complete house now can be worth in excess of £600,000. There has been some improvement in the Princes Road district, however the regeneration plans for the roads off Granby Street seem to have stalled and many properties remain boarded up. The district is so close to the city centre and Princes Park, it will be a great place to live when the regeneration works are complete.”

Princes Park The beginning of the new millennium brought about much regeneration to the area, with property developers snapping up Victorian and Georgian houses in the Canning suburbs for as little as £40,000. The neglected 1970s Falkner Housing Estate was replaced by Project Rosemary’s new Women’s Hospital on the northern side of Upper Parliament Street, and following the riots, the Granby Business Park was created. The Princes Park Renewal Area programme, with planned completion by 2015, includes a combination of demolition, new build and refurbishment across five neighbourhoods, just on the edge of the Canning suburb. The priority works for the city council are to acquire the last few remaining properties of the Welsh Streets clearance area in 2011/13 and to demolish them, opening up the whole area for the planned new-build programme by developer Gleeson in partnership with Plus Dane. This would comprise 180 additional homes with a private sector investment estimated value of £21.6 million. Louis Anastasiou, managing director, of Andrew Louis, said: “Over the past 30 years we have seen a massive transformation of the mainly residential area, including the rebuilding of the Rialto complex. Housing in the area tends to be in terraces but there are a growing number of apartments available as larger Victorian properties, particularly around the Princes Road/Avenue Boulevard, are broken up into separate dwellings.” Even with the massive property price jump around the Canning suburbs, there are many period houses still available near Princes Park for a fraction of the price of their neighbours but which need a fair bit of refurbishment. With the Canning suburbs proving to be so popular with families and young professionals, the next hotspot is definitely the Princes Park area as it accommodates the spill over from Liverpool’s newest cultural quarter.

YOUR VIEWS ON BIG ISSUES Britons took home a staggering 6.8 billion plastic bags last year – 300 million more than the year before. When Ireland introduced plastic bag tax in 2002 of 13p per bag, yearly usage dropped practically overnight from 328 per person to 21.

Should more shops charge for plastic bags? “Yes. I always take a plastic bag to the shops with me. I’m carrying my wallet and umbrella in one today. It’s because you have to pay for them and I don’t want to do that when I’ve got bags at home. Money is the biggest motivator for most people and if more supermarkets charged, more people would bring their own. It’s second nature for me now.”

I try and recycle everything I can.”

They’re created as a by-product of petroleum too, so they use up resources. I’m wholly in favour of supermarkets charging for bags, but to really make a difference it needs to be much more than the 5p shops like M&S charge.”

One of the things about the house we really liked was that it included a lot of environmentally friendly features. We have a solar panel on the roof and there is a water recycling system, which flushes the downstairs toilet.

We bought the Lovell show home so it came with all the decorating finished and with the appliances and some of the furniture and accessories. We have been adding our own bits slowly, but we really loved the show home, which is why we went for this one. We were living in the city centre before but we were getting fed up with the small space, we wanted a house and a garden. We really liked this Lovell development because when we looked at the houses they were in the style we like, and the team here were very helpful. The wallpaper in the living room is something that when you see it in the shops you might not think ‘I like that’, but it does look nice. We really like the spirals and different colours to it. We both really like the modern and clean look, but with the added bold pieces. We wanted the rooms to have a white and pink theme with a bit of silver in it. The garden was a big draw for us, having it enclosed and large, which is what we were missing in the city centre.

Without a doubt one of the biggest DJs on the planet right now, Laidback Luke is back in Liverpool to spin his decks on the fields of Creamfields. The superstar DJ, who has worked with David Guetta and A-Trak as well as remixing everyone from Black Eyed Peas to Christina Aguilera, is presenting the new Super You&Me arena at dance festival Creamfields for the first time ever.

You’re hosting the very first SuperYou&Me arena at Creamfields, what can we expect? The Super You&Me arena is based on the club nights which I’ve hosted around the world. My Super You&Me experience, which is a super-hero themed party, is bringing together my favourite DJs from around the globe, from Wolfgang Gartner to Oliver Twizt, all playing at this arena. We should all feel like heroes stepping into this new arena at Creamfields. SuperYou&Me has been very successful, touring all the major dance festivals around the world. Where did the concept for the club night come from? I felt a lot of the dance music experience was getting to be too cool. I was wondering where the fun had gone. I remember the best nights out was about having stupid fun with my friends. The anticipation of dressing up, or at least actively being aware of what you will look like going out, adds to a great night out. Also, I’ve always had a weakness for comics and superheroes. Now

I have the best excuse to actually feel and dress up like one. I'm thinking of going as Bruce Lee. I'll just go topless and draw three stripes on each side of my chest. Tiesto and Sebastian Ingrosso have turned up to watch you perform many times before, how does it feel to perform in front of these huge DJs? Tiesto's love for our style of house music is because we are all friendly and supportive to one and another. House music was always like that, the feeling of one love. It should remain like that and having support from your peers means the world. Although, they’ll probably not judge me the way I judge myself, I do keep in mind that they are watching over my shoulder too. What are going to be the big summer tunes this year? I don't know yet really. Swedish House Mafia tracks are always big and the Example/Michael Woods Changed the Way You Kissed Me is absolutely massive at the moment. Let's see at the end of the season though. Your new album for Cream Ibiza has just been released; tell us a little more about it. It's a Laidback Luke two-hour energy package to celebrate the summer. I'm happy and honoured to do it with Cream as a lot of my summer revolves around us working together. I tried to put a

bit of everything in there. My main quality, and what I think makes life interesting, is variation. For instance, the music I love most is House music but after doing it for 20 years now, I sometimes get bored listening to it for over an hour. When I switch it up to Dubstep, or to a genre of House that's not that close to me, it's all about the return to my sound after that that counts. It feels refreshing again. What music do you listen to aside from dance music? Anything from classical music to rock. As I'm classically trained as well, I just love music in general. What has been the highlight of your career so far? Professionally, doing an official remix for Daft Punk for their song Crescendolls, as I'm such a huge fan. When I won a place on the world DJ top 20 my family finally understood my career and were delighted. Personally, my best productions are my two sons and finding a new way of living my life last year. A nonpressured personal life with renewed energy for life where my music is an integral part of it. COVERED IN FLORALS A couple of years ago, we bought a couple of sofas and an armchair from IKEA for the conservatory we had just had built. We enjoy spending time in this room especially in the summer. The furniture we purchased is really comfortable and fits the space perfectly, however the covers are looking tired and used and we are ready for a change. We have been to IKEA but none of the covers they have are grabbing our attention. We don’t want to go to the expense of having the furniture re-covered as we have a limited budget. Do you know anywhere that we could buy covers from which would fit the IKEA furniture we already have? I would love to find a patterned fabric, floral if possible with bright flowers. The online company Bemz could be the perfect solution for you. Their collection of furniture covers fit most IKEA sofas and chairs even discontinued models. So the company is definitely worth investigating. All the covers are simple to change and are completely machine washable. Bemz’s website is really easy to use and can help you in your design decision. First you select the type of sofa you have, the website then takes you to the fabric collections, choose your fabric and it is displayed on your sofa as it would be in your home. The floral pattern design by Marimekko, Uniko Red, could be just what you’re looking for and would be the star attraction in any conservatory.

We are searching for bold, bright, Hawaiian theme wallpaper for one wall in our kitchen/family room. The rest of the room is painted white, so we really want this wallpaper to act as a focal point for the room. Could you please suggest something that is outlandish. I have found the perfect wallpaper for you that is not for the faint hearted, but if you decorate with confidence it’s perfect for you. Office chic I work from home in a small office. I have never decorated the room as an office, so the wallpaper and carpet is that of a bedroom. On hot summer days I struggle to go in there, I have come to the conclusion that it’s now two years on and I should decorate the room appropriately. I want to change everything and have seen some bright orange units that I love and a blue desk chair. If I go ahead and use such bright furniture, what would you suggest for the rest of the room? Hot colours are easier to decorate with than most, if you’re looking to make statements with the vibrant furniture you are using. I would suggest a very simple colour scheme for the rest of the room. Wooden flooring would work well; think about a dark colour, as this would give the room more of an office feel. OMD TO OPEN ERIC’S British electronica pioneers Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark will be the first band to play at the relaunched Eric’s Club. Liverpool band OMD, whose hits include Joan of Arc, Electricity and Sailing on the Seven Seas, will perform at the opening

event on September 10. The cult club on Matthew Street whose four year reign helped launch the likes of Blondie, The Clash, The Jam, The Police, Joy Division and U2, will reopen to the public 31 years after it closed. "If Eric's had not existed then neither would OMD,” said lead singer Andy McCluskey. Other bands lined up to play include Chris Thile and Michael Daves on 17 Sept, Dave Sharp of The Alarm on 15 Oct, Jon Alan on 19 Oct and The Christians on 26 Nov. ON THE WATERFRONT CELEBRATIONS

LIVER LIGHTS UP! housands of people gathered at Liverpool’s Pier Head to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Liverpool’s buildings. The iconic Royal Liver Building was brought to life for a spectacular light and sound show by the Czech projection artists The Macula, which told the story of the city’s 800 year history including the civil war, industrial revolution, the Second World War and The Beatles. Afterwards, the new Museum of Liverpool pulsated to music with a 3D show. The On the Waterfront weekend included a lantern display and various performances from the likes of the Philharmonic Orchestra on the main stage.
