HISTORIC GATES RETURN TO LIVERPOOL An unusual resident arrived at Liverpool ONE this week, adding an extra bit of culture to the shopping centre, in the form of the historic Liverpool Sailors’ Home gates.
The magnificent, ornate gates have been re-erected, close to their original location, after an absence of 60 years. The cast iron gates originally marked the entrance to the Sailors’ Home on Canning Place, where the Liverpool ONE retail development now stands.
The Pooley Gates
They have been erected in the same area on Paradise Street, near the John Lewis store. Known by many as the Pooley Gates, they were designed and installed in 1852 by West Derby-born foundry owner Henry Pooley and architect John Cunningham. They are a great example of 19th century industrial design, combining engineering and art. Originally created to welcome the men and women of a great seafaring port, the restored gates will now serve as a memorial to the merchant seamen who
passed through the city. The city’s World Heritage Officer, John Hinchliffe, said: "We are delighted these historic gates are once more standing proud in our city. It makes perfect sense to re-erect them near to the spot where they originally stood, near to Old Dock which was vitally important in the creation of modern Liverpool. They now provide a gateway to Liverpool ONE and the city’s World Heritage Site.” The gates were removed in 1951, in advance of repairs to bomb damage to the building caused during World War II. They were offered to W & T Avery, and taken to their Soho Foundry in Smethwick, in the West Midlands, where they stood until 2010 as an example of Pooley’s craftsmanship. The gates return to their rightful place is thanks to a campaign began in 2004, led by former merchant seaman Gabriel Muies.

A student revolution

In a deal, thought to be the first of its kind in the UK, LJMU’s Liverpool Students’ Union and city centre agent City Residential have formed a partnership that promises to transform the student letting experience for both students and landlords. Student Union Lettings is aiming to set new levels of service, with the company established as a 50:50 joint venture with two directors from each partner organisation. Student Union Lettings is already recruiting landlords who, once vetted and approved, will enjoy unrivalled access to 26,000 students

Lindsey Critchley, a teaching assistant and Michael Farrelly, a science teacher, bought a three bedroom semi-detached home at Fountain Court, Whitford Road, Birkenhead through Lovell. The development will always hold special memories for the couple, who are both 25, because Michael proposed to Lindsey when they went to collect the keys to their new home. We just love having an en-suite bathroom; it was one of the most appealing features of the house. In the last property we rented, the bathroom was downstairs and it was cold and damp; this one is lovely and means we have two bathrooms for Michael and I to get ready at the same time.
Michael persuaded me to visit the show home because we were renting and it was just dead money. One of our friends recommended the development but I didn't think we would be able to afford it. However, we could and it was cheaper than renting. I got down on one knee in the sales office and asked Lindsey to marry me. She kept on saying 'oh my god, oh my god', and then she said yes. I had given Kate, the sales consultant, the ring to attach to the keys. One of the first things that struck us about the house was how light it was. Everything is so clean and neutral, it was like having a blank canvas and we could put our own stamp on it.

We have already bought some sofas from CSL Sofas and the rest of the furniture for downstairs - our colour theme is purple. We have kept the walls magnolia but we want to put an accent wall in purple. We have seen some lovely purple floral and abstract wallpaper in Next and B&Q, which we hope to use. A property with three bedrooms was very appealing for us because in the future we would like to have a family. We would love to have some fitted wardrobes installed and even carpets on the stairs but we may have to wait until half term to do that. We are saving for a wedding now too so we have two things we need to save up for.
We have been working on the garden and we have planted an orange tree and a lemon tree but we need to install a bigger shed so Michael can have some 'man' time to himself. Being one of the first on the development was a bonus especially as the builders were still here and were able to help us with anything we needed. The sales consultant, Kate, has been wonderful too and really looked after us. We have met our neighbours and they are lovely and we love the feel of the development. Our last home had permit parking so it is a real plus to have off road parking.

From 21 she attended the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art in London. She appeared in Coronation Street in 1980 but it was her eight-year role as Sheila Grant in Brookside that made her a household name. She spent 11 years as cold case officer Dr Grace Foley in Waking the Dead and has also chalked up appearances in Brassed Off, A Passionate Woman and most recently in BBC comedy drama, Sugartown.

Interview with Sue Johnston
Sue Johnston OBE is one of Merseyside’s most famous actresses. Being cast in Brookside kickstarted a long and astonishingly successful career on TV and in film, but she’s perhaps best loved as put upon mum ‘Barb’ in sitcom The Royle Family. Sue has just published her memoir entitled ‘Things I Couldn’t Tell My Mother’, and she takes time off from filming to tell Your Move all about it.
INTERVIEW BY EMMA PINCH
How did your autobiography get its name? My mum died three years ago and I spent the last days at the care home reflecting on our lives together. I thought if I wrote an autobiography that would be a great starting point. But there are things I couldn’t have written about if she’d been alive, not because I’ve criticised her in a terrible way, but I wouldn’t have been able to investigate our relationship in the way I did. Your mother’s either your best friend or it’s a relationship fraught with anger, and that was ours, even though it was so precious. Actually there’s a quote I haven’t put in but I’ve just remembered: ‘You’ve never looked decent since I stopped dressing you.’ That sums up my relationship with my mum. She lost control over me. That’s where the conflict comes in. What are the things you couldn’t tell her? It deals with my eating disorder, bulimia, and my depression, which she wouldn’t have understood. I also talk about when I was attacked, 40 years ago, and how it left me. I never talked to my mother or father about it at the time because it was the thing they’d lived in dread about ever since I went to London to become an actress. Dad and I lived a life of taking the easy way out. We wouldn’t tell her certain
things because we didn’t want to upset her. Were there any teenage escapades you couldn’t reveal? At Prescot Girls Grammar in fifth form we used to climb over the school wall to meet the boys. But it was very innocent compared to now. I’d go to The Cavern Club and even there they only sold pop and tea. When you came back you smelled of it and my mother would disapprove and say: ‘You’ve been to that dirty Cavern’. When the Scene at 6.30 came on TV it would be: ‘It’s those dirty Beatles’. But when Brian Epstein tidied them up it would be all sweetness and light and: ‘When is Paul coming round?’ You worked with Epstein. You must have some good tales about the Beatles? I’ve got some naughty tales but my lips are sealed – maybe I’ll write another book when I’m 80 and I don’t care anymore. I was great friends with Paul - he came to my house and when they went to the Star Club in Hamburg he wrote to me. When She Loves Me was out Paul and Ringo were very concerned no-one was going to come and see them, so they decided to drive down Mathew Street before their performance. Crowds were queuing and the girls went mad. I was in the back seat hidden under a pile of coats. I never fancied Paul though. I saw him as a mate and lusted after John Lennon like everyone else. But he didn’t want to know. You’re known for playing stoic characters who suffer a lot. Has real life ever helped you play any of them? During the riots last month I was filming in
Enfield and I was dreading anyone damaging my property because I would have had to go out and confront them. Injustice makes me angry and my instinct is to fight back. I fought when I was attacked. There have been lots of situations in Liverpool or Manchester where I’ve stepped into a fight, even when a man who had been stabbed came flying down the stairs of a club. It’s in my nature and hard for me not to do. I’ve got that spirit. That’s been useful as an actor. What role would you most like to reprise or do? There’s going to be another Christmas edition of the Royle Family this year so I’m very grateful to be reprising Barbara Royle. She’s a great one. I’m also in a new BBC drama about a woman who has been left, a woman of my own age for a change. There’s a lot of competition when these roles come up and a lot of friends my age are brilliant actors but don’t get enough work. I was lucky I got Sheila Grant. What places in Liverpool hold a special place in your heart? I’m an LFC season ticket holder, so Anfield obviously. The Mersey, I could look at that forever. And the Adelphi, the posh hotel where you had to pay sixpence to go to the toilet. We thought that was hilarious.

In the last issue of Your Move, I noticed a reader asked for advice on light shades for their hallway. I was really interested in the shade that you recommended as I have similar shades in my living room, however although I love the shades I hate looking at what I consider to be ugly energy saving light bulbs. Do you know of any energy saving light bulbs I could get that are well designed?

The design company Plumen has designed and manufactured the world’s first designer energy saving light bulb, so help is at hand. The light bulb is a fantastic design invention, it uses 80 per cent less energy than the traditional incandescent fittings, keeping down electricity bills and it’s better for the environment. The light also lasts up to eight times longer. The Plumen range allows you to purchase an environmental-friendly product with style. It works like any other low energy bulb but has a lot more presence and would look fantastic in your light shades. In fact the bulbs are too cool to hide behind a shade with their sculptural glass design; you could just suspend them from your ceiling fitting.
We have a small downstairs bathroom, which I would like to have a nautical theme. Have you got any advice on how to achieve this look? If you’re going to theme a room I would always suggest creating the look with decorating elements that can easily be change or moved. This way if you ever get bored with the theme it is easy to change. I have found great nautical wallpaper, which would look fantastic in a small bathroom. Neil is the Aintree-born artist, producer and presenter behind Baftawinning ITV children’s show, Art Attack. 360,000 FLOCK TO CITY CENTRE FOR FESTIVAL
MATHEW STREET FESTIVAL’S SUCCESS hat began as a single street event designed to celebrate Liverpool’s pop heritage is now one of the biggest free music festivals in Europe, with a record 360,000 people turning out this year. Now in its 19th year, Mathew Street Festival has gradually extended its reach to take in five stages across the city, from Water Street to the Queensway Tunnel, featuring tribute bands from The Merseybeasts to the Black Eyed Peaz, which drew a huge crowd. The Made in Liverpool stage, in Williamson Square, showcased local acts including rising star Delta Maid, who took time out from her tour supporting Bryan Ferry to play the stage.
