Your Move’s five top tips The Big Freeze last winter caught many people on the hop. Broken boilers, burst pipes, leaky roofs and toppled trees became commonplace as the coldest winter on record in 31 years took its toll.

nd it wasn’t cheap. In December insurance companies took around 12,000 calls a day, adding up to £1.4 billion of cold-related domestic and motoring disasters. It’s still anyone’s guess as to what the weather will do this year – old wives tales tales say the current abundance of berries points to another hard winter – but it would be foolish not to learn from the experiences of 2010. With a bit of preparation now we can look forward to a cosy, dry and disaster free winter. With that in mind Your Move has asked experts to choose five top tips for winterproofing your home.
A
1. HEATING BOILER Get your boiler serviced. An emergency call out to repair a broken boiler can cost up to £600, as well having to put up with the discomfort of a
cold house and freezing water. Avoid these horrors by getting your boiler serviced before winter kicks in. “Prices for having a boiler serviced go up in the winter, so it’s a good idea to get it done now,” said Stephen Boyle, director of STL Plumbing and Heating Ltd.
CENTRAL HEATING “It’s a good idea to get a full central heating check too,” says Stephen. STL Ltd will do both for £50 plus VAT. The engineer will make sure the whole system is working at maximum efficiency, including checking radiators are working at the correct pressure, bleeding them if necessary. For maximum efficiency they can install thermostatic radiator valves, which will adjust levels of heat supplied to the home according to the temperature registered. The standard setting is 21 degrees – but if you turn it down one degree you can save up to £65 per year.

3. INSULATION WALLS AND LOFT It’s oft repeated but here goes again. Insulation is one of the cheapest ways to keep your house warm and reduce your energy bills. If you haven’t got cavity wall insulation, look into it. It costs

Even if you have it already, it’s worth checking that the sealing round it is up to scratch before the cold snap starts. By fitting the minimum ‘C’ rated windows or installing double glazing you could save up to £150 a year.
4. EXTERIORS GUTTERING Clean leaves and debris out of your guttering by the end of autumn. Pay
expensive damage. Watch out for any icicles hanging from the guttering during a cold spell, as these are a giveaway of where they may be blocked or leaking. It’s particularly important to check that gutter coupling – the rubber or silicon sealant between channels – has not rotted away. “Leaking gutters can cause penetrative damp,” explains David Christian, director of Thomas Christian Estates Ltd, a repairs, renovations and maintenance company of 20 years standing. “The water comes down the walls, goes into the ground, then comes back up into the walls, and that’s when you get mould inside properties. You can save yourself a fortune by checking your gutters are sound and getting sections repaired and replaced as necessary.” The same thing can happen if gutters are blocked.
ROOF It’s worth remembering that insurance companies insist that your home has been properly maintained before they will pay out. Check roof tiles are all present and correct and in good condition so they won’t let in water, as last winter wrought havoc on many roofs. “If you’ve got a crack in a tile and water
gets in and freezes, it can make the crack bigger,” explains David, “and then water could get in. Check ridge tiles are sound too, as these can fly off in gales.” It’s equally important to check that there are no gaps or cracks in lead flashing on the wall or on the roof. Flashing prevents water entering at joints or protruding objects like window sills. “Good flashing is vital but over time this can erode,” says David.

In particular look out for cavities near where the branches meet the trunk and fungus and cracks which could indicate dead wood, advises Jeff Anderson, a tree surgeon for 13 years, who runs Merseyside-wide Andersons Tree Surgery and Garden Maintenance Services. “Dead wood causes weak spots and it means an affected branch could rip off in high winds or with heavy snow on top,” he explains. “Weak spots can worsen if water freezes in the cavity because ice causes it to expand.” Now is a good time to spot dead parts in trees as the gaps in foliage are still obvious without foliage. “Of course it depends on the age, size and position of the tree as to if it would pose a hazard, but if you are unsure, it’s worth getting a tree surgeon in to look at it.”

Holiday Home Abroad? Save some tax

Q: I have been renovating a house in Spain for my own family to use but also want to let out through an agency. How will this work for tax purposes? A: There are basically two main tax treatments, either the property will be treated under the buy-to-let rules or much more beneficially under the Furnished Holiday Lettings (FHL) rules. In both cases there will be an adjustment to take account of your personal use of the property. The tax treatment of Furnished Holiday Lettings (FHL) has been advantageous for many years. Up until a few years ago, this only applied to UK properties, but legislation has now been brought in to extend this to properties in the European Economic Area (EEA) which includes Spain. Provided that certain conditions are met, FHL’s are treated as a trade. This can be preferable to the tax regime for normal buy-to-let property in a number of specific areas, as the rules and reliefs for trades are more generous. Q: What are the conditions which apply for the property to qualify as a FHL? A: There are new strict conditions, based on the potential and actual letting of the property. The property must be: • Available for letting for at least 210 days a year and • Actually let for at least 105 days. There are also rules which prevent long term occupation by one customer/tenant from qualifying. These criteria are a lot stricter than previously and to take account of this a ‘period of grace’ has been established, which means if the rules are met in one particular year, you can elect, even if the conditions are not met for the next two years to quality.

A: From next April the main benefits are the beneficial Capital Gains Tax treatment on ultimate disposal and, during the letting period the ability to offset a much broader range of capital allowances against the income you receive. We couldn’t have asked for a better view. The windows in the living area stretch right across the room so we have panoramic views of the city skyline and the waterfront.
Although we live on the Isle of Man, which has a quieter way of life, we found that we were visiting Liverpool eight or nine times a year. We’d always stayed in the Hilton and loved this part of the city. For a weekend home we wanted to be in the thick of things and have everything on our doorstep. At first finding something suitable for us was a bit of a hassle - we must have seen at least 10 other properties but nothing was quite right. As soon as we visited the apartment in One Park West we knew it was the one for us. It’s in such a good location and beautifully furnished - we said we’d take it on the spot.
The second bedroom is so quirky. The silver animal print wallpaper mixed with the apple green cushions and trinkets is something we would never think to do but it just works. The whole apartment is stylish.
Most of the furniture and soft furnishings are from John Lewis but there’s just nothing we want to add - it all just fits together perfectly. We can’t wait until we can spend more time here; it’s the ideal city get-away with Liverpool ONE and the Albert Dock a stone’s throw away. It definitely takes away the stress of city-centre living.
The apartment was one of One Park West’s show apartments and it’s simply stunning. We love how all the rooms have such a distinct, contemporary style but at the same time naturally flow into one another so the apartment feels even more spacious.

Interview with Captain Christopher Wells
The Queen Elizabeth liner berthed at the Liverpool docks drew in the crowds to the waterfront, celebrating the start of the Mersey River Festival with fireworks. The successor of the QE II is as elegant as her namesake, transporting passengers to an era of the British Empire and Art Deco complete with croquet and bowls lawn and a traditional English pub. At her helm is Captain Christopher Wells. Your Move was invited onboard to find out what it’s like to helm what is arguably the most famous ship in the world.

This is Queen Elizabeth’s maiden round Britain voyage. How long have you been at the helm of the ship? I brought her out from the shipyard and round to Southampton where she was named and I’ve been on her ever since. It’s a thrill to take the ship anywhere, it’s a special thrill to bring her into a city with such a long history with the company, and the city where Samuel Cunard started the business 170 years ago. How does the Queen Elizabeth compare to her predecessor QE II? We believe the Queen Elizabeth is a worthy successor to the QE II and we’re very proud that she bears the same style; the Art Deco style is a tribute to the first Queen Elizabeth and we have lots of memorabilia from the QE II, such as the original bell. The Cunard ships look different from other ships with the dark hull, colour scheme and the red funnel but what really makes us
different is the style and heritage that we bring with us. The ships are very beautiful inside with lots of space. We don’t like to crowd people in. How did you find bringing the ship into Liverpool? The Mersey is not a particularly easy river because it’s quite shallow and completely open to the westerly winds and storm force winds at the entrance, and then within the river itself there are currents. The river runs up to speeds of seven knots, which can be quite a challenge. It was very windy outside today with gale force winds but once we came out of Birkenhead we had a little bit of shelter. This is the first time I’ve brought a liner into Liverpool as a captain. However, I was on the QE II when she came in ’94/96 before Liverpool had refurbished the berth. We anchored in the stream and ferried our guests backwards and forwards using the Liverpool ferries. Queen Elizabeth II was a much more challenging ship and she didn’t have any of the modern facilities or thrusters this ship has. She was of a previous generation, but an extremely well loved liner and we were extremely proud of her.
We’re equally proud to bring this ship as her successor around the UK. Tell us a little about your background. I started an apprenticeship as a cadet with Shell; I was 16 years old. I’m a new boy with Cunard as I’ve only been here for 20 years. I’m a cargo ship man really. I met my wife on the QE II and we’ve been happily married for 14 years now. It’s a different way of life to working at home, 9 to 5, you have to balance being away from home for a period of time then being at home for a period of time. I will go off for three or four months on my ship then I’m home for two months. What is the most interesting harbour you’ve sailed into? When I started with Shell I worked in the Far East so I still like to go to the Far East, and down to Australia and New Zealand. Sidney is the most exciting harbour to go into because it just opens up in front of you - it’s the drama of coming into the harbour. There’s not many places in the world like that.

The Queen Elizabeth is almost identical in design to her sister ship Queen Victoria, although because of the steeper stern, her passenger capacity will be slightly higher at 2,058. The ship is a tribute to the two previous Queen Elizabeths: the original Queen Elizabeth and the QE2. It also evokes the era of the 1930s, in which Cunard's first Queen Elizabeth was launched, with many art deco interior touches. Her design is based on that of the Holland America Line "Signature" class cruise ships such as Eurodam and Nieuw Amsterdam. These in turn are a development of the "Vista" class cruise ship design.

We are turning the fourth bedroom, which is very small and never really used, into a dressing room. I have always dreamed about having a dressing room but I don’t want to make any costly mistakes. Could you please give me some pointers on how to create the kind of room that you see in interior magazines?
I live in a furnished apartment in the city centre, with a compact room which I use as a study as I work from home a lot. The room has a white desk and chair, and I would like to invest in a desk lamp that would add a design element to the space and encourage me to go in there to work. Have you seen any great products on the market that I could invest in? The Cobra table lamp made by Martinelli Luce, sold by Made in Design, is a fantastic contemporary piece that has a retro and industrial feel to it. It would look dynamic in a small room and I’m sure would encourage you to work in the space more.
Planning is everything when it comes to creating the perfect dressing room. Think about how you want store your clothes, shoes and accessories. How much hanging space do you need? What kind of drawer space? How many shoes do you have? The perfect dressing room has no clutter - that has to be tip number two. When you have planned your specification I would recommend having a plan drawn, a good joiner will do this for you, or most fitted furniture companies will offer a bespoke design service free of charge. Think about how you are going to join the two rooms: where are you going to create the doorway? Do you want your bedroom and dressing room to be open plan? Do you want to make a feature from a doorway? A full height doorway is a design feature you may not be able to have anywhere else in your home, but to include it in your design at this stage would create a design feature that not only adds impact but also the illusion of an increase of height and space. Lighting is also very important; down lighters will give you great overall lighting whilst a chandelier adds instant glamour. Your final design decisions come to the finishes you wish to use. If you want the room to work with the adjoining bedroom, use similar colours and finishes in both, carrying any textural elements into both rooms. ZEBRA CROSSING My partner and I have spent the summer modernising a terrace property, which we’re hopefully going to move into in a couple of weeks. The house has fantastic period wooden floors and the staircase is beautiful. We have lovingly restored the floors and staircase, and do not want to cover all our hard work with carpets. We have decided to have rugs in the hallway and a stair carpet runner - however, we can’t find a stair runner in a contemporary design. Can you help? KICK START FOR FITNESS World kickboxing champion Brendan Mitty has opened a martial arts studio in Maghull to help people of all ages and sizes enjoy the benefits of the sport.

“Kickboxing is great for your whole body,” he says. “It improves strength, flexibility, core stability, cardio fitness, and it boosts your confidence. It never gets boring as you’re always improving your control and skill.” Paradigm Martial Arts and Fitness Centre on Sefton Industrial Estate, which also boasts a juice bar and classes in Pilates, Zumba and
spinning, was created as a reaction to the proliferation of ‘click’ gyms; instructor free zones where people let themselves in with a code. Brendan is running four-week, non-contact beginner courses for ‘little ninjas’, older children, men and women. Courses launch every five weeks with tuition from some of the best instructors in the region. Says Brendan: “Paradigm is very much about classes and instruction for all levels of ability and enjoying sport. It restores the fun, social element of going to the gym.”

The launch of Liverpool’s first dry bar on September 30 shifts the emphasis away from getting sozzled to good food, good fun and delicious grown up soft drinks. The Brink (as in, ‘honey, I’m back from…’) on Parr Street has menus devised by esteemed former Everyman chef Tom Gill and an interior by Richard Eastman, the man behind those at Panoramic, Leaf and Delifonseca. Food will include homemade snacks and sandwiches – such as ‘posh’ Fish Finger Sandwiches with freshly made bread – and dishes like Scouse, Fish and Chips and Thai Prawn Curry. Drinks will include specialist teas and coffees, juices, retro tipples like dandelion and burdock, and treats like mocktail Kir Royale and mint choc chip smoothie. THE MUSIC ROUND UP Some of the biggest stars from over the pond visit Liverpool this autumn and there’s action from an army of award-winning homegrown talent too. R&B heavy hitter Rihanna, supported by DJ Calvin Harris, leads the Stateside charge at the Echo Arena on Oct 7, while her mate Katy Perry brings up the rear on October 18. Musician of the moment Tinie Tempah plays the Arena on 31 Oct and Sheffield’s finest, the Arctic Monkeys, wrap up their UK tour at the O2 Academy on Nov 9. Jessie J hopes to be plaster free for her date at Mountford Hall, Liverpool Guild of Students, on October 22, while rock royalty Motorhead will get metal heads a-banging on November 6.
Cinematic encounters THE HELP Hotly tipped for an Oscar, the chick flick that has taken America by storm hits British cinemas on October 28. Set in Jackson, Mississippi, during the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s, The Help sees Skeeter, a Southern society girl, return from college determined to become a writer. She turns her friends’ lives upside down when she decides to interview the black women who have spent their lives taking care of the local white Southern families. Aibileen, Skeeter’s best friend’s housekeeper, is the first to
open up and it’s not long before everyone in the town becomes caught up in the changing times. The Help stars Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Jessica Chastain, Bryce Dallas Howard and is directed by Tate Taylor.
The Ladykillers
The UK debut of the theatrical remake of The Ladykillers broke Liverpool Playhouse records when tickets went on sale and the starstudded comedy promises to make five star viewing. Penned by Father Ted creator Graham Linehan, it stars Oscar nominated actor Peter Capaldi, and runs from Nov 3-19 before transferring to the West End. The play is set around a gang of criminals who hide the spoils of their bank robbery in the home of an elderly lady while pretending to be a string quartet. Capaldi stars as the dastardly Professor Marcus and comedian Ben Miller plays creepy Louis Harvey. Meanwhile there’s something for everyone at the Empire this autumn, with girls’ fave Grease from Nov 8-19 and chap-friendly An Audience With Raifa Benitez on October 16.
Arctic Monkeys
ARTS Alice in Wonderland is the subject of a fascinating new exhibition at Tate Liverpool featuring the work of world-renowned artists who were inspired by it. Different aspects of the story have provided themes for key art movements throughout the 20th century, from the surrealists to proponents of psychedelia. Expect to see
work by artists ranging from Salvador Dali to Peter Blake and Torsten Lauschmann. The exhibition starts with Lewis Carroll’s original manuscript written in 1864 for Cheshire schoolgirl Alice Liddell, shown alongside his own accompanying photographs and drawings, plus original illustrations and Victorian Alice memorabilia. From Nov 4. Adult tickets cost £7.20 each.

My favourite with... ART ATTACK’S NEIL BUCHANAN Former musician Neil Buchanan, 49, is the creator and presenter of BAFTA-winning children’s art show, Art Attack. This month, showing he is very much alive - rumours of his demise on the internet proved extremely premature - he has launched his first limited edition art collection, entitled Hope Street. It is based on the Aintree-born artist’s memories of growing up in Liverpool.
The thing about Liverpool is We have our own Scouse speak, Scouse food, Scouse humour, loyalty and friendship, which are all unbeatable. We also make the best chips in the universe!
My favourite restaurant
The Hope Street Hotel on Hope Street, which funnily enough is the street where I gave up my chance to study fine art at Liverpool College of Art and formed the band Marseille instead. I always enjoy staying there - it’s a very stylish boutique hotel with a lovely restaurant and bar.
My favourite musican
Mott The Hoople. I had the pleasure of meeting Ian Hunter in my early teens when he was playing at the old Liverpool Stadium and he told me: ‘follow your dream to the end’. That helped me realise my ambition of getting a recording contract and going on tour to the USA in the late 70s and early 80s.
My favourite TV programme
Well of course I’m going to say Art Attack! I spent 17 years of my life dreaming up and creating all those papier maché models, and drawing and painting and heading outside to make the ‘Big Art’ creations, which always seemed to be everyone’s favourite. Frasier, Sergeant Bilko and Laurel and Hardy are all favourites too. I’m a sucker for nostalgia.
My favourite book
I’ve got this amazing coffee table book about Butlins in its heyday, in the 50s, 60s and 70s. It’s fascinating and a real eye opener into a Britain that’s all but disappeared.
My favourite food
My mum’s of course, very English and traditional. Christmas dinner and curries are top of the list.
My favourite holiday destination
Barbados - the quiet end of the island. And an awesome desert oasis just outside Dubai.
My favourite way to relax Playing my guitar and painting – which is great because I’ve been doing both 24/7 over the past year.
My favourite film
White Christmas, which positively oozes nostalgia, and James Cagney in the 1942 Yankee Doodle Dandy. It is great to see Cagney singing and dancing, when we were all more familiar with his gangster characters.
