University student David Millwood, from Cardiff, and grandmother Maudry Millwood recently bought a onebedroom apartment in St Paul’s Square, situated in the centre of the Liverpool business district. My grandmother bought the apartment as an investment, which is going to save me a lot of money in rent. We looked at St Paul’s Square from a position that when I finish university we can rent the apartment out quite easily because of all the businesses around here.

We negotiated to get all the furniture from their show apartment. I’ve added to the furniture and colour scheme with basic things like the settee, table and TV but other than that it all came ready. My grandmother gave me the Welsh Cream Liqueur to bring some of home back here, which I’m not allowed to open until she comes to visit.

I liked Liverpool straight away because it felt like a miniature London. I looked at apartments closer to the city centre but they seemed quite noisy with nightclubs nearby. I wanted somewhere a bit quieter where I can concentrate if I need to. It’s nice that it’s not so far away from the university, the Albert Dock and Liverpool ONE. I like all the light and space in the apartment. I wanted somewhere with space to do my drawings. I like that the open plan front room is a regular square, a lot of the apartments I looked had funny angles and for me it wouldn’t work.

The bedroom has great space and light to fit my drawing board. Eventually I will decorate the walls as they are just white right now, and I will probably put paintings up. I have one of the drawings I did from when I was doing my A-levels, which I will put up in the kitchen.

The colour scheme in the flat looks great, the green and orange are really my colours. I’m a modern, contemporary person so it all goes really well. There’s also a lot of storage space which you don’t expect from city centre apartments.

Wrong name on the deeds?

My husband and I have just sold our buy-to-let property. We bought this many years ago in my name only, as it was easier for me to get a mortgage at that time, although the deposit money came from our joint savings. Now we have sold it, at a substantial gain. I am a higher rate tax payer and my husband has no other income/gains in the year. I have realised that for Capital Gains Tax purposes, it would have been much better to have had the property in joint names – is there anything we can do?

These factors are as follows • Legal title, ie whose name is on the deeds? • Occupation of the property • Receipt of any rental income, was it paid into a joint account and enjoyed by you both? • Provision of funds to purchase the property • Receipt of sale proceeds on disposal – was it paid into a joint account, or have you divided it equally? No single one of these factors should be considered in isolation, and each case must be considered on the facts. HMRC would also look at background information, so if you and your husband hold all other assets jointly then this would also be a helpful factor. Keeping good records and evidence will therefore be important, particularly in cases where beneficial ownership is unclear.

The legal owner of an asset is not necessarily the beneficial owner. It is beneficial ownership (not legal ownership) which a Capital Gains Tax liability principally follows. To reduce your tax bill, you would need to be able to argue that the house was beneficially jointly owned, irrespective of what the deeds may have said. The taxman will generally assume that if one spouse paid for an asset and is the sole legal owner, unless there is evidence to the contrary, that they are also the beneficial owner. Prime Minister David Cameron has recently announced plans to boost the ‘right to buy’ council housing scheme introduced under Margaret Thatcher in the 1980s. Discounts will be increased encouraging home ownership, with the money raised used to build more homes for rent.

----------- INTERVIEW WITH SHAUN RYDER -----------

Shaun Ryder was lead singer and lyricist of the Happy Mondays and a pioneer of the Hacienda-centric Madchester scene of the early 90s. The hard-living legend went on to have his life dramatised in film 24-Hour Party People and front rock band Black Grape, and last year he charmed viewers to come runner up in ITV’s I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here. Shaun has just released his autobiography, entitled Twisting My Melon, and takes half an hour upstairs at Bold Street’s Leaf to tell Your Move how he doesn’t regret a thing.

INTERVIEW BY EMMA PINCH

You were a prodigious consumer of drugs and alcohol back in the day. Did that make writing an autobiography tricky? The only problem I did have was with the 90s. I remember the 60s better than the 90s and I was about eight in 1969. But I had books, magazines and newspapers clippings with reports of what I was up to, what the Mondays were up to, what everyone else was up to. My job was to sort fact from fiction. Were you surprised by anything you read about yourself? Er, no! It was all extreme and that’s part of the game really, being extreme. I’m not particularly bothered by it. I never wore a Joe Bloggs T-shirt, in my life. That was the most shocking thing I read. That’s extreme, in my reality. So how extreme did your rock and roll lifestyle get? It was same life as I always had. As any normal kid’s life is. It’s rock and roll before it’s rock and roll. The one thing I do regret is thinking that I knew it all and that I could beat the system and you just can’t. I should have paid my

management £150,000. But all of it was worthwhile. Every single bit of it was, even the cold turkey. Yeah, I’m proud of what we achieved. Did you get up the M62 to Liverpool much? When we were kids if you went to Liverpool you got your nut kicked in. Many a time I’ve been chased round here (Bold Street). I used to have pals, some kids in Huyton, and they used to give us safe passage when we came. I don’t go out here now, I don’t even go out in Manchester. I just don’t do the pub or the club scene any more. What do you do to relax these days? I watch telly. Granada Reports, BBC news in the morning with Bill and Sian, Downton Abbey, Coronation Street and X-Factor. You seem a lot different to the hellraising Shaun Ryder of the 90s. You grow up. Once you’re pushing 50 you’re not doing the same things as you were at 18, 20, 30. When I got into the music business it was a totally different ball game. When I got into it at 18 at the weekend you put on your wig and suit and became rock and roll, then you went back home to your family. It was an image. It wasn’t about giving everything away and knowing the ins and outs of everything. In 2000 it became about reality TV and the need to know everything. I was on I’m a Celebrity at the end of my career, not the beginning.

That’s the last thing people would have wanted anyway, to get the person that I was at 18. What’s the man like behind the image? Creative. You know, a nice fella. A bit cheesy. In I’m A Celebrity you came over as quite shy… I’m not naturally Mr Showbiz. The last thing I ever wanted in life was attention. And I ended up singing in a rock band. Was that the reason for the drugs? A little bit. And the reason why I brought Beswick into the thing as well. To take the attention away from me. I’m always get nervous (before a performance). It’s really not that bad any more. That just comes with age I suppose, you just feel comfortable in your shoes and underpants Do you keep in touch with any of your jungle mates? I still see Lembit (Opik), Dom (Joly) and Jenny (Éclair). I’d like to meet up with Nigel (Havers) too. Any more reality shows in the pipeline? A turn on Strictly maybe? No. You go on Strictly, you dance, they take the p*ss out of you, you can’t answer back. You don’t learn anything about the contestants. What’s the point if you don’t get to show who you are? First album was the strangely titled Squirrel and G-Man Twenty Four Hour Party People Plastic Face Carnt Smile (White Out), but it was 1990’s Paul Oakenfold-produced Thrills n Pills n Bellyaches that was the Mondays’ biggest commercial hit, featuring Step On, which included the now legendary lyric (courtesy of singer John Kongas) “You’re twisting my melon man”. His post-Mondays band, Black Grape, won acclaim with 1995 album It’s Great to Be Straight… Yeah, and he has collaborated with the Gorillaz in Dare on their Demon Days album and with Russell Watson for album The Voice. He has just announced a tour, Up Close and Personal, which will take place next year.

THOUSANDS RUN FULL MARATHON

LIVERPOOL MARATHON RETURNS ver 9,000 people participated in the brand new RunLiverpool Marathon, which helped raise money for charities including The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation, Scope, Marie Curie and 23 Foundation. Joining local participants were runners from America, Australia, Dubai, the Philippines and Hong Kong along with almost every European country having a representative on the day. Starting in Birkenhead Park the 26.2 mile track took participants along both sides of the River Mersey, finishing in front of the Liver Buildings. The marathon was so successful it prompted the local authorities to commit to staging a second RunLiverpool Marathon in 2012.
