Have you noticed more adverts promoting solar energy in recent months? Emails with solar in the title are dropping into my inbox regularly asking me if I want free electricity for the next 25 years (erm, yes!), offering to reduce my fuel bill, install panels for free, give me a grant and help me to make money. But as things that sound too good to be true usually are, I click delete.

I

n view of the fact that energy costs are rising dramatically the idea of generating your own electricity does sound appealing. Solar panels are less conspicuous than wind power and do not rely upon weather conditions; we can assume that the sun will rise every morning. And, in the event of a power cut or strike, having access to your own power supply is a useful 32 Your Move

back up. So what is on offer to consumers? What are the cost implications and the factors that need to be considered before choosing solar? Simon Sherriff, director at Eco Energy Depot in Derby Road, Bootle, has seen a rise in the number of people choosing solar in the last year. He said: “We are accredited by the Microgeneration Certification

Scheme and following a site survey at a property we know immediately if solar panels are a viable option.” There are various types of panel on the market; Simon cites the hybrid version as the most efficient, and expensive. With the typical cost for solar ranging between £6,000 and £12,000, (depending upon the number panels installed) Simon believes remortgaging is an

effective way to fund the process. He said: “With such low interest rates at the moment and the potential for earning money from the generated electricity, customers are finding that the systems can pay for themselves.” Location is an important factor. South facing will obviously catch more sunlight but roofs varying from southeast through to southwest can be

HOT TOPIC used, with only an overall drop off of about 15 per cent efficiency. “The panels must be positioned in direct sunlight. Shade from overhanging trees or nearby buildings is a solar killer,” said Simon.

Liverpool and North Wales Energy adviser, Wyn Hughes, agrees: “The positioning of the panels is crucial. The side of your roof, which is south facing, needs to be big enough to take the panels, and have nothing to overshadow them. If you only have a small area to fit a couple of panels then ultimately this will mean less electricity generated, although it will still reduce your overall fuel bill. “Your roof structure must also be spot on, because any underlying problems with beams or surrounding tiles could have a serious impact on your panels. It’s a good idea to have your roof checked thoroughly before going ahead with installation.” Wyn first became interested in solar as a salesman for a firm five years ago. He said: “I saw the potential in this fantastic and logical energy source. However, as a salesman I didn’t have all of the answers that potential customers were looking for.” Since then he has specialised in renewable energy options that, ultimately, save consumers money and promote green energy. He said: “It’s a good idea to have a set of detailed questions ready when you are looking for quotes. You want answers from a trained installer or adviser rather than someone who is just there to sell you a system.” He suggests you ask questions about the type of inverter you

will be buying as this, like a battery, should be of high quality and able to store the power supply. “Customers should also check the contract as this will be an independent warranty and make sure they choose an MCS accredited company,” he said. “If anything goes wrong with your system and the company fails to solve the problem then the government backed 25-year guarantee will kick in.” Once installed, owners can then sign up for the Feed-in Tariff. To promote green energy and reach climate targets, the Government introduced a scheme eighteen months ago to encourage people to buy solar panels. Owners can then sign up for a Feed-In Tariff whereby they are paid for each unit of electricity generated (currently 44p per kilowatt) whether it’s used immediately or sold back to the national grid. This means that not only can your solar panels power your energy needs for free but that you also get paid by the government for it. There are rumours throughout the industry that the government will shortly end, or dramatically cut, the Feed-in Tariff, prompting

Simon Sherriff believes the cut in the tariff could be anything up to 50 per cent whereas Wyn Hughes thinks that any cut will only be within the commercial sector and that domestic users will remain unaffected. Wyn also explained that alternative offers of free solar do have a catch. Energy companies offer to install their own panels on to your roof with incentives of cheaper bills and periods when you can use the solar powered electricity for free. Yet as they own the panels they also benefit from the Feed In Tariff. “The big energy companies are basically using your roof as a

way to generate electricity and earn money,” he said. However, for those who are not able to fund their own solar panels it is an alternative that will, at least, bring about a reduction in their fuel bill. Energy Outlet Ltd based in Formby has identified how investing in solar will also have an impact upon house prices. Its website states: “It will increase the value of your home. Any system that can provide your future house buyer with a tax free income and a way of offsetting their energy bills has got to be a good thing.” Energy Outlet also recommends consumers look for suppliers with Renewable Energy Association (REA) membership, as this commits your supplier to a professional code of conduct in the sale process, the information provided and aftercare provision. Jayne and Ian Clark, from Halebank, had their own solar panels installed less than a month ago. Jayne said: “We did a lot of research before we bought and we’re very pleased with the results.” The couple think that as well as the money they will earn through the Feedin Tariff their bills will be halved. “It was explained to us that the better the quality of the system the better return you will make,” said Jane. “Even when the weather is overcast we have noticed that the system can still generate about half of our electricity needs. There is not much you can get free these days, yet with solar power you can’t go wrong. It really does seem to be as good as was promised.”

Project manager Johanna Dijk, from Eindhoven, the Netherlands, recently moved into a two-bedroom apartment at The Gallery, in the city centre. The Gallery, adjacent to the Liverpool Docks, is available from Vermont.

I moved from London to Liverpool because of work. I joined BT on the fast track leadership programme and they only had positions in the north, Liverpool, Glasgow or Newcastle so I moved to Liverpool. It’s really close to my friends in London and family. It’s a nice change going from super-big London to somewhere where there is still a lot going on, with lots of nice bars and restaurants. All the shops are close together and I can walk to work if I want to.

I really love the bathrooms, they are stunning and everyone comments on it. The bathroom is built and finished really well and has power showers. The bedroom is lovely; the big bed is really comfortable as well.

When I came here I had one day to find a place, from the pictures I saw online The Gallery looked really good. I like it because it’s really clean, nice and new; the view is just great. I was looking for a onebedroom at first but when I saw the two-bedroom and the view, I knew instantly this was the place for me. It’s a very nice building and I knew I was going to spend a lot of here so I wanted it to be nice and lovely.

I like to go to small boutiques for my home wares, although I do love Ikea as well but you have to know what to pick and mix. The pillows are from Primark, which look great with the decor and although not expensive, they are ideal. I quite like cosy, warm interiors with a rustic feel. The gardens outside are pretty, there are quotes from famous people inscribed in the gardens which is really cool. I feel really safe in the building because you’re near the main road and it was one of the reasons why I chose it.

This apartment is great for young professionals who are looking for somewhere new, clean and furnished. I would never be able to live somewhere like this in London; the space is fabulous for one person. It’s so close to everything that I can cycle to work.

I would love to get some pictures for the walls; I really love Dali and Renoir’s Luncheon of the Boating Party. However, I also love local painters and photographers with local landscapes.

The Ladykillers’ stage adaptation at The Playhouse, where it debuts its world premiere, saw its fastest first day of ticket sales ever. Writer Graham Linehan, goliath of British sitcoms Father Ted, Black Books and The IT Crowd, has turned his hand for the very first time to pen a play and stage adapt the dark comedy British classic. Your Move catches up with the Irish-born writer to find out how rehearsals are going before curtains open on November 3.

How did you first get involved in the stage INTERVIEW BY adaptation? DINA KARIM The reason I did it was because I was told ‘the film is the film’, and I got to make it my own. It made it very fun, it made it worth spending the time on because I could reinvent it and make it my own. The cast is absolutely great, all the characters are bringing their own voice to their roles. The film is a masterpiece of small moments captured in film but with the stage play there are more big wonderful comic moments. How did you find adapting The Ladykillers to the stage? The story is so neat but an early decision I made was that all the scenes would take place inside the house, so the scene at the police station and with Frankie Howerd all fell away but the shape stayed the same so it worked. So we had a bit more fun with these characters and defined them a bit more. It was a very enjoyable job, it’s like working with dolls, you’re working with archetype British types and it was a pleasure to do so. We did face a few problems with the deaths, we wanted the audience to feel more for the deaths but that was all about character development. Is the play very much changed from the film? Everything is the same as the film, it’s the same structure. In the end it was a huge help that the film acted as a map which made life easier - and meant I spent most of the time laughing during writing and rehearsals. Theatre company Fiery Angel brought the popular 39 Steps to the Liverpool Playhouse two years ago and wanted to

have the world premier of The Ladykillers here. How happy are you that Liverpool is getting its debut? My wife Helen (sister of Liverpudlian Peter Serafinowicz’s actually used to work as an usher at The Playhouse, so it’s a symbol of good fortune. It’s in Liverpool for a few weeks which allows us to try it out in front of some of the toughest audiences in the world before taking it to London. The rehearsals are going really well, it’s very optimistic and cheerful. As a writer it’s best not to be at rehearsals every day but that you see it as an audience member and that it flows well. Have you taken much of a break from your very successful TV career? Well, I’m in the middle of talking about a sitcom with Steve Delaney who writes the BBC Radio 4 show Count Arthur Strong’s radio show! I will also be doing an IT Crowd special next year and thinking of maybe doing an IT Crowd film. I love doing TV because when I do a show now it can go on TV very quickly. If I come up with a sitcom I can just write it and it gets to be on TV very quick. The Ladykillers is an 1955 Ealing Studio classic. It is the tale of eccentric Mrs Wilberforce, who when she decides to let her spare room, the mysterious Professor Marcus moves in; but he may not be the fine upstanding gentleman he appears to be. As she provides an endless supply of tea and cake to the Professor and his motley crew of ‘musicians’, how long can the gang continue to pull the crocheted wool over this seemingly naïve little old lady’s eyes? The Ladykillers will premier on November 3 - 8, at the Liverpool Playhouse.

A playroom dream At the moment the children’s playroom is carpeted, however the carpet is starting to look worn and is stained from blackcurrant drinks. I would love to get rid of the carpet and expose the wooden floorboards underneath, but the floorboards are really dark and dull, and I don’t think they would look right in the playroom. Apart from adding a colourful rug, is there anything else I can do to brighten the floorboards? The best and the most practical solution for you would be to paint the floorboards in a light, warm neutral shade. LIVERPOOL IRISH FESTIVAL

DISCOVERING HERITAGE n a day of celebration at The Bluecoat, families came together to participate in a day filled with all things Irish including music, dance, drama and storytelling. The celebration day showcased the skills locals have picked up at Discovering the Liverpool Irish project. Irish elders also remembered their pasts in talks and the day included discussions, films and music. Discovering the Liverpool Irish is a yearlong project discovering hidden histories, making Liverpool’s heritage real and teaches traditional skills to the hundreds of members of the Liverpool Irish community.
