More galleries for Museum of Liverpool Museum of Liverpool will open more galleries in December as it announces record visitor figures. The new Museum of Liverpool will open even more galleries and an entire new floor before the end of the year. The news comes as it is announced that it has received a record half a million visitors in the first three months since opening in July. Galleries including The Great Port and much-awaited Liverpool Overhead Railway will open on Friday 2 December, along with a 38-metre time traveller’s timeline, and a gallery dedicated to Liverpool’s King’s Regiment. Janet Dugdale, Director of the Museum of Liverpool said: “Having already had 500,000 visitors through our doors to see the first galleries opened, we’re so excited to be opening even more,

which will reveal some much-loved and anticipated objects that we know will be taken into the hearts of our visitors. From December, visitors to the Museum of Liverpool will be able to witness the brilliance of the Liverpool Overhead Railway for themselves, 55 years after it was demolished. The gallery uses exhibits from National Museums Liverpool’s land transport collection to bring the story of Liverpool as a great port to life. Its centrepiece is the steam locomotive Lion (1838), along with a Sentinel 10-12 ton Super Steam Tractor (1927) used widely on the dockside, and the

You have just released Letters, what can fans expect from it and how different is it to your songs from X Factor? I really pushed myself vocally and people are really pleased with the results and the album. Simon (Cowell) kind of left me to it, which I’m grateful for. He put enough faith in me, the management and the label to go off and make the album which we all felt was right. Even the track listing was a simple discussion. It took about 15 minutes to work it out. It just all fell into place. There are a couple of bits where my vocal does have that edge to it. But I’ve been trying so hard to emulate my past influences, and young heroes like Kurt Cobain. If you’ve got that then you’ve got it, if you don’t and you try and do it, then you damage it. If you’ve got a clear voice, you’ve got a clear voice, and I think I have. When I get right up there, that’s when it can rasp. Coincidently, Gary Barlow is name checked on your album and credited as writer of Run For Your Life, the first single released from the album. How did that collaboration come about? My A&R man Chris Briggs was at a Take That concerts, and Gary said he had a song for me. I was apprehensive prior to hearing

it, because I really wanted to like it because I’m not going to stand up there and pour my heart in to something that I don’t believe in. But it’s so true, it’s about being a bad boyfriend and telling your girlfriend to run and find someone that can really give them what they deserve out of a relationship. With songs like that, when I was recording, no word of a lie, I was crying in the vocal booth. I really do believe in the song. I’ve been trying to write a song like that, but mine were always three and half minutes of me slating myself. Have you watched any of the new X Factor? I haven’t had much time to follow it too much but X-Factor is looking great and it’s different, Gary is settling in really well. Tulisa and Kelly were round at my house last weekend; they’ve all been really supportive of me and the new album. I think if I had taken part this year it would have been completely different. I love Marcus though, he’s great. Do you stay in touch with anyone from last year’s show? I’m good friends with Aiden Grimshaw, he only lives five minutes down the road. What can we expect from the tour next year? I can’t wait to get out there, it’s going to be a great live show - although there’s no dancing! I am looking forward to coming to Liverpool; my dad’s Scouse and used to sing at The Phil. We’re just going to crack on with the tour now, which I can’t wait to

do because it’s my first own tour. I’m also starting to work on the second album. Matt Cardle’s debut album Letters is out now. He will be playing at The Philharmonic as part of his 2012 UK tour on March 14.

I really want to change my pendant light in my bedroom to down lighters as I think they look more modern and give a better light. As the nights are getting darker, I would really like to add some finishing touches to the living room. In the summer, we repainted the room in a soft cream; put in new wooden blinds, fitted a new carpet (neutral) and bought two brown leather sofas. Antoni Dmochowski from HomeLets at Eight

I

t was his Polish background that first led to Antoni (or Tosh as he is better known) being employed by Homelets. “The managing director of HomeLets, Alan Binks, had identified how difficult it was for people arriving from Poland to find somewhere to live,” he said. “So, it was my job to help them through the whole rental process, when they were feeling quite unfamiliar in a new city.” He is now lettings and sales manager at HomeLet’s Allerton branch and, with business booming, looking forward to a city office opening soon. “Sales are moving along steadily but it is within lettings, which is our main business, where we are really busy,” he said. Antoni, who works just over the road from Eight, had planned to have a quick sandwich and chat but after looking at the menu decided instead on the two-course lunch for £8.95. We both opted for the two-

courses and whilst we made a start on the food (Duck Spring Rolls and Tiger Prawns in Chilli Oil) Antoni chatted about his job, studying, and how he ended up in Liverpool. He said: “My parents are both second generation Poles and I grew up in Scunthorpe before studying at Leicester University, where I met my girlfriend who is from Liverpool. Obviously this was a major factor in me moving here six years ago.” The couple live near Lark Lane and recently became engaged. Said Antoni: “We have probably eaten in every restaurant along the Lane and tried most of the bars. It’s a great place to live and go out – no pretensions just people who are easy going and want to socialise.”

Antoni is lucky enough to have a study day within his working week in order to complete a masters degree in Property Management at LJMU. “I’m getting the chance to develop my skills academically as well as through the experience I get every day in work,” he said. As we continued with our main course (Caesar Salad with Chicken) Antoni gave me his opinion on pricing within the property market. He said: “Property prices become overcomplicated because trends and forecasts are constantly being made and I think this just worries people. Any property will sell - or let as long as it is priced realistically.

“For example, pricing too high is not necessarily the best option for sellers because it creates a false perspective. This leads to suspicions in buyers’ minds and sellers feeling short changed when they don’t get the price they expected.” Anyway, back to interests outside of work life. Antoni tells me that the Polish National Football Team is one of his passions and that he is looking forward to next year when Poland hosts the European Championships. And, if football doesn’t keep him busy enough there is an engagement celebration to plan. Said Antoni: “I have family from Scunthorpe and Poland coming over for the party so I’ve decided to book somewhere on Lark Lane, and show them what a night out in Liverpool is really like.” For more information telephone HomeLets on 0151 280 4047.
