In the bleak midwinter of cuts, austerity, and inflation what can we do to spread Christmas cheer? Your Move readers from around the city have all pitched in with their own ideas for how we can make this Christmas more creative and exciting in these frugal days. Natasha Goodwin, from Aigburth, learnt this tip at a Christmas family day at Speke Hall many years ago. She said: “This is a really easy way to make your home smell of Christmas and just sitting and making these decorations evokes the whole period.
“All you need is a handful of whole cloves, oranges and a fork. Use your fork to make holes in the orange and then press each clove into the spaces. The smell is absolutely fantastic and they last all the way through Christmas.” Steve Dubrieux, from Sefton Park, is planning a history-

Said Steve: “Money is definitely tighter this year and as we have three kids we made the decision to really try and stay within a budget.” The family is planning a 1940’s Christmas. “We are going to keep to the theme for everything this year so we have used a history website to get ideas on the decorations,” he said. “We have made most of them already and the Christmas dinner will be on the rationing model – hopefully resulting in less waste. And apart from getting the kids one main present each, Father Christmas is going to stick to board games, books, and model planes. She said: “Each year another one usually falls off the tree and gets smashed; they are really fragile, coloured glass baubles, which were my mums.” To make up for the ones she loses she replaces each one sparingly. “Rather than buy more decorations every Christmas I try to buy just one or two each year,” she said. “I found some beautiful china decorations a few years ago in Cheshire Oaks and it’s started a tradition in the family. My daughters also buy one each and so every year our trees have an extra decoration, which has thought and meaning attached to it.” Jenny Hickson, who works in financial literacy for Citizens Advice in Garston, is currently planning budgeting sessions for Christmas. Said Jenny: “Being frugal at Christmas is not about restricting yourself, and dwelling on the things you can’t buy. It’s more about being creative in the ways you give and show how much you care about your family and friends.”
Sitting down and working out your budget over the next four weeks, rather than buying everything in one go helps to focus the mind on how much you realistically have to spend this year.
Saving money on the essentials can free up money for fun things. Jenny even advises people to check their fuel suppliers and the tariff they are on as soon as possible, in case there is any chance of saving money this month.

Web developer Chris Joyce and girlfriend Nicky Lindsay, nursery nurse, moved into a threebedroom home at Sevenoaks, Rock Ferry. The couple bought the house under the shared equity scheme through Lovell.
The home comes with a garden, which was pre-turfed and has a shed and a water butt. We were previously renting a house so we weren’t allowed to do anything with the garden but now that we’ve got our own garden we can do all kind of things with it and have BBQs.
My mum saw an advert for the house and that Lovell were doing good offers. We had lived in rented properties, in Bebington and Prenton, for five years and although we had been saving, we were having problems saving enough for the deposit which put us off buying. I never thought this would become a reality for us so quickly, and it certainly wouldn’t have without the incentives being offered by Lovell. The 75/25 shared equity scheme we opted for made it possible for us to find the £4,800 for a five per cent deposit. I was amazed that, not only were we able to pull together a deposit, but our monthly mortgage payments are now £150 cheaper than the rent we were paying previously.

The walls are magnolia; the hall has a green and black theme and the living room has a red and terracotta theme. I would like to make the drive bigger and put a conservatory in the back. We’ve got a lot of pictures to put up yet; It’s nice to have a few pieces of art to hang on the walls.
My favourite part of the home is how energy efficient it is. We have solar panels in the roof, so through the summer we had lots of free hot water, our gas bills in our last home were horrendous and here it’s only £2 per month even when the solar panels have stopped generating energy for us. The windows are treated to keep the heat in, we have loft insulation and a compost bin in the garden as well as a water butt.
My sister has recently followed in my footsteps and purchased a Lovell home in Kensington Square, Liverpool. Our friends and family have been impressed that we have managed to get our foot on the property ladder with such ease.

Your Move talked to Vanessa White, the youngest of the group, about the upcoming tour and album. The half-Filipino, Yeovil-born singer has been in show business from a young age, already singing the lead in hit West End musical The Lion King when she was barely in her teens. The Saturdays with their sparklingly fluorescent hyper-pop burst on the music scene in 2007 racking up five smash-hit singles and a platinum debut album, and counting. INTERVIEW BY DINA KARIM
You’ve been very busy lately with a new album and preparing for the upcoming tour. Tell us a little more. Well, I’m chilling at home today! We’re keeping ourselves very busy, we’ve got the new album out. We started working a year ago on it, we’re really excited - it’s quite a
personal album. We have all gone in together; there is a strong vibe of togetherness in the studio. The new album is a lot sexier ranging from fierce pop to ballads, it’s definitely a different more grown up sound. It’s also a lot more RnB than anything we’ve done before. What’s your favourite track on the album? My favourite song is Do What You Want With Me; I went from hating it to loving it and now it’s my favourite. It has a
dubstep vibe to it, and I love what it says. I like listening to lots of old music and I love Beyonce and Corinne Bailey Rae. Are you excited to be back in Liverpool for the UK tour? We’re coming to Liverpool early December, I feel like everyone will be great, there will be such a great vibe. I’m always thrilled with Liverpool, it has the biggest cheerers. There’s nothing better than being on stage. There’s not going to be that much different from the previous tour we did. How did The Saturdays get together? The band got together four years ago and we never thought we would be here four years later. When I first auditioned for the band I was petrified to the point where my legs were shaking! I almost ran off stage. We had a meeting about names and because Saturday is the best day of the week and it looked like a popstar name it was perfect. We travel a lot, and write our music while on tour and do amazing routines - it’s a dream come true. What do you do on your days off? I don’t really get a lot of days off and when I do I do boring stuff like emptying my suitcases! My favourite thing is doing tours, there’s so much more that we do than just perform. The band is my life, whatever I do is for the band and we all support each other.

Tate Liverpool’s Alice in Wonderland exhibition is no less ambitious than the tales from Lewis Carroll, as it provides a comprehensive historical exploration of how the stories have influenced the visual arts. Feeling like you’re tumbling down the rabbit hole yourself, the exhibition space is huge as it winds chronologically from Carroll’s original manuscript and Sir John Tenniel’s famous illustrations in the first edition
through to Salvador Dali and the Surrealist movement, and, of course, the photos of 12-year-old Alice Liddell herself who in her haunting poses inspired Carroll’s tales. Hugely popular Handel’s Messiah is back in Liverpool for an evening of inspiring music providing audiences with a unique experience. On February 7 the Liverpool Philharmonic Choir, conducted by early music expert Paul Agnew, will be performing a variety of Handel’s classics including Ev’ry Valley, I Know That My Redeemer Liveth and For Unto Us A Child Is Born. My favourite with... DWEEZIL ZAPPA There’s no better credentials than the son of a rockstar, and Frank Zappa’s son Dweezil continued the legacy of his father by performing the classic 1974 album 'Apostrophe' in sequence and in its entirety, as well as a host of other Zappa favourites at the Liverpool Philharmonic last week.
Thing about Liverpool
We played a concert here last year, which was a fun experience to be in the city of The Beatles and we played Eleanor Rigby. Unfortunately, though, you don’t see much of the city when touring so I would like to visit Liverpool properly one day.
Musician
My dad obviously, he’s the most inspiring. I also love Randi Rhodes, Eddie Van Halen, Jimmy Page and Jimmy Hendrix.
Music venue
Playing in an outdoor-style amphitheatre since it has better acoustics. In Quebec, right down by the water, it is reminiscent of a European city.
Book
Would be a manual for a guitar preamp. I don’t have a lot of time for reading but I do read books to my two daughters like Diary of a Wombat.
Holiday destination
Hawaii because my Gran was born there so growing up I used to visit a lot; I also love the smells and the way I can just relax. I also like romantic getaways in Italy and Bali.
Film
Time Bandits. It’s pretty entertaining; I like the absurd nature of humour like in Monty Python.
Food
Thai food; I once had a cooking show on television (Dweezil and Lisa on the Food Network), so I do like to cook.
Item of clothing
I’m not really obsessive about clothing; I tend to just wear jeans, t-shirt and tennis shoes.
