Help for Bootle home buyers A developer which specialises in building homes for first time buyers is staging a special event in Bootle next week (January 12th) to help house hunters pick their way through the process of securing a place of their own. CITY RESTAURANT COMEDY estaurant City Rendezvous, on Columbus Quay, hosted a comedy afternoon to raise money for a children’s charity. Over £1,000 was raised for Alder Hey’s Imagine appeal at the Chinese restaurant. The event saw radio duo Billy Butler and Wally Scott share their hilarious stories from quiz show ‘Hold Your Plums’, followed by comedians Pauline Daniels and Gary Skyner. Guests were treated to a special banquet and the chance to win and bid on a variety of donated items including signed memorabilia and a weekend for two at Hotel Indigo.

Jessica French, an administration assistant and her partner David Lynch, bought a three-bedroom house at Speakman Gardens, Prescot, through the Firstbuy scheme last September. The house, part of a brand new development, was bought through Taylor Wimpey, which has similar properties at the development available from £159,950 (or £127,960 with Firstbuy).
I’d always lived in Eccleston, which is just up the road from Prescot, so I know the area very well and liked the idea of living there. We’d looked around quite a few new housing estates. We wanted to buy through Firstbuy (a government-backed equity loan scheme) so we were looking at new builds that could be bought through that.
I absolutely love purple and I really like black and white so they were the colours I based my theme on. I’m basically a shopaholic so I’ve really enjoyed buying new things for the house. My favourite shop is a little place in Stockton Heath, Warrington called ‘All that Jazz’ but I also like Next and Ikea.
I tend to mix and match; I love a good bargain but then I also know when to splash out. I have a fantastic silver elephant ornament, which I bought in Home Bargains; it really stands out. My lovely purple lamp was also a bargain, from Wilkinson. It’s quite quirky and different. I really like my fireplace, it’s mounted on the wall and looks really smart. I paid quite a bit of money for it, over £200, at Poundstretcher. In the kitchen I’ve hung a floral canvas above the sink. The wall was quite big and looked a bit plain so I thought hanging a picture or a canvas would make it a bit more interesting.
Buying the property was easier than I’d thought it would be. I didn’t know anything about Firstbuy before we started looking to buy but I made sure I did my research once we began considering it. I think we got a really good deal and I’m very pleased with it. I love everything about the house; I couldn’t pick one thing out as my favourite feature. The property looks quite small from the outside but it’s actually really spacious. It’s a three bedroom semidetached. I wanted a big house because we intend on starting a family in the future so we want lots of space.

JOHN KIRBY INTERVIEW
To have an exhibition at the Walker Art Gallery, the national gallery of the North, is an immense honour for any artist and one especially for John Kirby whose first glimpse of art came from inside the Walker’s opulent walls. The Living and the Dead exhibition will be John’s first retrospective exhibition, showcasing his paintings and sculptures spanning three decades. He talks to Your Move about what it means for him to be exhibited at the gallery.
INTERVIEW BY DINA KARIM
Tell us a little about your show at the Walker Art Gallery. The exhibition will show paintings and sculptures from the past 20 years, all from different series. I used to go to the Walker as a child and to have a show there is an incredible honour. Although I live in London, Liverpool will always be my emotional home. When I go to a gallery it’s like visiting relatives. I remember the wonderful Victorian paintings of the Walker, including my favourites Samson by Solomon J Solomon and The Triumph of the Innocents by William Holman Hunt. Emotionally the show is quite daunting; Liverpool is a difficult city to come from. It is an uncompromising place. The Isle of Man is just as important to my work because it’s a big part of my heart and early life, it’s where I spent all my holidays as a child.

How did you start painting? My parents were working class, my dad a coach driver and my mum worked in a shop. I would never have had the chance to paint when I was younger; my parents wanted me to have a decent job and they had no academic ambitions for me. I left school at 16 years old to work as a shipping clerk in Liverpool. I then went to India to work in an orphanage in Calcutta, where Mother Theresa was the director. I was getting fed up with social work and didn’t think I could be an artist or even knew what an artist really was. I came to London as a probation officer and worked for a number of years, until at 33 years old I went to St Martin’s School of Art. That’s quite a leap from social work to becoming an artist. Did you find it difficult making the transition? I don’t see it as a big revolutionary change. Curiosity about people runs through all my jobs. People are very interesting, I’m curious about the way they are. My paintings are a mixture of my imagination and what I see, some are self-portraits but they’re not directly about me. Paintings about me are
about myself as a child or young person, they are unlined by life and I try to make them as blank as possible. Do you have a favourite piece from the collection? I have my favourite paintings but at the end of the day, beauty is in the eye of the beholder so I can’t really say. You’ve also moved into sculpture recently, a few pieces which you will be exhibiting. What prompted you to branch out? The move to sculpture began whilst doing a course in pottery to get away from art. There are only so many wonky bowls you can make though, so I made heads which have the simplicity of my early work. You’re often compared to Rene Magritte, what do you think of this comparison? I don’t personally see the association with Magritte, he paints figures in a similar way but I am flattered at the comparison. I take more of my inspiration from Edward Hopper, Lucien Freud, Francis Bacon and Paula Rego. The Living and the Dead John Kirby retrospective. Walker Art Gallery. January 13 - April 15.

I would like to decorate my son’s bedroom. My son is four years old and his room is still decorated in a nursery theme. Could you please recommend wallpaper that we could use in the whole room? New Year, new start, new home? We ideally would like to move this year. Last year we put our home on the market but unfortunately we had no offers, so we withdrew it. This year we are determine to sell it and are prepared to improve the property to hopefully get a sale. Could you give us any points that could help us with this? It is possible to maximise your home’s appeal to potential buyers and improve its value. The more people desire your property the more likely you are to sell it. I would first start with any essential repairs, making sure your home is warm, safe and maintained. Fix any leaks that you have, any damp patches and any cracks. It is also worth repairing any simple problems that you haven’t got round to fixing, such as broken handles, lights that aren’t working and dripping taps. The buyers’ first impression of your home is so important, I can’t stress that enough. Start by giving it a make over. Clear any clutter; only leave the clothes that you wear all the time, furniture, accessories and belongings you really need, everything else that you can’t part with put into storage. Next if you think any room in your home looks shabby or dated, including the bathroom or kitchen, decorate it or transform into a room that you would want to live in. Give every room in your home a purpose. At this time of year it’s always easy to neglect the garden; it should be de-cluttered and given the same attention as your home.

It’s Inside Out Liverpool’s most exciting fringe venue, The Lantern Theatre, is under new management bringing an exciting programme of entertainment in the New Year.
The family run company Inside Out Arts is offering an exciting programme from comedy to music and much more; as well as building up an exciting line of events for 2012.
New owners Inside Out Arts Limited have chosen to invest and build their futures in the theatre, which since being opened in 2009 by Tiny Giants, a non-profit organisation, the theatre has received fantastic feedback from the local community and visual arts world.
EAT New additions to the Bold Street retail and bar experience has helped bolster Liverpool’s unique offering. Pop Boutique, also based in Whitechapel, is the latest vintage clothing store to expand into the busy Bold Street area, opening its second Liverpool store. The vintage shop boasts of natural wood floors and exposed-brick walls adorned with stag heads. Managing director Richard Free said: “The Bold Street area is really nice and is perfect for us because it’s the arts quarter of Liverpool.” The latest eatery to open on Bold Street is Ludus Lounge Bar, just around the corner from Fact. The bar is divided into a kitchenstyle cafe upstairs, while downstairs is a step back in time with a prohibition, 1920s interior serving food and a large selection of cocktails.

that are here, when we spoke to the producers and the promoters they all said it was a great idea. It would be nice to get students in and get to know the venue.” The second venture is theatre cards. The Empire Trust employs Ambassador Theatre Group, which is the largest operator in Europe with 40 venues in the country and 11 in the West End, to manage the venue. At £30 a year, theatregoers can use the card in any of its venues to get money off tickets, prior notice when shows are going on sale and many other add-on deals. On a final note, Andrew tells me what it means to him and his family to have made the courageous move and follow his dreams. He says: “When I look back at my career, the one thing that these big old theatres have is the sense of occasion, of something quite special. THIS IS LADIES NIGHT irls gathered at Liverpool’s The Lantern Theatre, on Blundell Street, for the perfect ladies night with shopping, wine and entertainment. Hosted by Tatties Vintage, guests were treated to mulled wine and winter cocktails whilst they browsed around the vintage jewellery and craft stalls. Shoppers were definitely in the festive spirit with live singers and the option to have tarot readings to see what 2012 holds for them. Siobhan Noble, creative director of Tatties Vintage, said: "Liverpool is known for being a fashion conscious city, at Tatties Vintage we are developing a new concept of shopping, style and glamour all under one roof at our monthly fashion events."
