SEA ODYSSEY TO HEAD NORTH When the world’s leading street theatre company brings its latest extravaganza to Liverpool this year, North Liverpool will take centre stage.
Sea Odyssey
Royal De Luxe will present Sea Odyssey, a story of how the human spirit triumphs over the Titanic tragedy, in April and for the first time in Liverpool event history areas such as Stanley Park, Everton and Anfield will play a part. Sea Odyssey will star the 30-foot tall Little Girl Giant and it is estimated the event will attract an audience of around 250,000. The Little Girl Giant will visit areas around both Liverpool and Everton football clubs as well as Breck Road and Walton Lane.
Councillor Wendy Simon, Liverpool city council’s cabinet member for culture and tourism, said: “Tens of thousands of people visit the north end for football matches, but rarely spend any more time there, so this is the perfect opportunity to show off the area and its potential, and as a result, hopefully encourage investment. “Everton Park is a prime example of a significant city asset in close proximity to the city centre which some people, even Liverpudlians, may not be aware of – so it’s a case of highlighting these hidden gems and transforming people’s perceptions of the area.” The free event takes place from Friday 20 to Sunday 22 April. OBITUARY
TRIBUTE TO PAUL RICE Your Move was one of a great many organisations to be saddened to hear of the death of Liverpool Commercial Partnership’s Chief Executive Paul Rice who passed away on Saturday 21 January 2012. The Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King was packed with mourners from all walks of life for the Requiem Funeral Mass which took place on 1 February. Paul was appointed as chief executive of the Liverpool Commercial District Partnership in 2006. He was diagnosed with MDS 18 months ago (a form of blood cancer similar to Leukemia). Throughout this time he battled with courses of chemotherapy and underwent a bone marrow transplant in the Royal Liverpool University Hospital in January last year. Despite the intensive, invasive and gruelling nature of his treatment he continued to work seemingly tirelessly successfully campaigning to secure a ‘yes’ vote in the ballot last year to achieve Business Improvement District (BID) status. Paul was highly regarded in the business community and his passion, commitment and energy was appreciated by everyone who had the privilege to work with him. A devoted Liverpool supporter, Paul chaired the inaugural meeting of the Spirit of Shankly (SOS) Supporters' Union before being elected as Chair and then Vice Chair and Lifetime Vice President in recognition of his work for the organisation. Tributes flooded in from across the city and around the world from those who knew Paul. Liverpool FC managing director Ian Ayre said: "I was fortunate to have known Paul personally and he was a true fan and also an excellent businessman.” Peter Hooton of The Farm described him as ‘inspirational.’ Chairman of the Commercial District Partnership David Guest said: “There are no words that can do justice to such an inspirational character. Both professionally and personally I had the utmost respect and affection for a much loved man who was genuinely committed to Liverpool and whose achievements for the city will leave a lasting legacy. Paul’s unique personality shone with his sense of humour, warmth and likeability. He had the ability to relate to anyone whatever their status or walk of life and always made an impact on people. He will be sorely missed but never forgotten.” Paul was cared for by staff in wards 7y and 10z at the Royal University Hospital Liverpool and throughout his illness he described both teams as incredible. Before he died Paul decided to set up SPLOSH (Staff, Patients and Loved Ones Supporting Heamatology). Keepmoat builders wear the pink
For one day only some of Keepmoat Homes’ beefiest workmen donned the pinkest of pink protective gear on site at developments in North Huyton, all in aid of Breast Cancer Campaign’s Wear It Pink day.
Decked out in pink highvis jackets, pink hard hats and even pink boots, the workmen at Hamilton Place put aside their male pride for a fantastic cause, raising £1,159.47 in the process. Your Mayor, Your Say As the row over an elected mayor for Liverpool rages on, we ask you, the people who matter, what you think.
Do you want an elected mayor for Liverpool? Alan Richards, from Liverpool now living in Wales (pictured with wife Jean) I’m against having an elected mayor; especially the way Liverpool is doing it. The leader of the city council Joe Anderson has suggested not having a referendum to ask the people what they think and just having an election instead. That’s wrong. Salford has just had a referendum. You have to ask the people if they want it. If I were to vote I would vote for Liam Fogarty, he’d be the type I’d go for.
Sheila and Norman Love, Widnes Sheila: I do think it’s a good idea. It will bring a lot to the area. London has one so why not Liverpool? The city is up and coming and an elected mayor would help that. I’d be in favour of it. Norman: It would depend who gets in; you could end up with some lunatic.
Lesley Portas, Southport I don’t think the general principle is a bad idea. I’m all for people having a say. If the elected mayor is going to have power then it needs to be someone with some experience. If it is just a status issue, just having someone to be the face of the city then it’s different but if they are going to have some degree of control then they’ll need to be somewhat experienced. I wouldn’t want someone biased though, with a purely political agenda.
Lisa Fieldes, Metquarter Flowers I think it’s a good idea to have a mayor. It’s not done London any harm has it? If we are going to have one I think it should be someone in the public eye such as (producer and screenwriter) Phil Redmond. I would vote for him but it depends how difficult or complicated they make the voting. If it were easy then I would vote.
Mrs E Coppelov, Huyton I’m not sure I’m in favour of having a mayor. If I were going to vote I would choose Liam Fogarty (former managing editor of Radio Merseyside). I don’t know much about him but if he’s been campaigning for this for over a decade then I’d go for him as he’s dedicated. What puts me off though is the cost. I’ve heard having an elected mayor would cost a lot of money but would it make any money back for the city?
Wendy Henshaw, St Helens I think an elected mayor would be good for the city. I have to admit I don’t know much about it, I haven’t heard much said about it but London has one and that works well.
The story so far…. Liverpool was set to join 10 other cities across the country in May in holding a referendum, with an election to be held in November should the people vote in favour. But councillor Joe Anderson has claimed bringing the election forward to May instead could secure £130m funding from the government. The government has yet to confirm this, stating only that to gain extra powers
and funding cities must have ‘stronger governance’. The council will vote on bypassing the referendum to an elected mayor election on February 7. If the election goes ahead on May 3, candidates will have to declare their interest before the end of March. Currently, just two have thrown their hats into the ring – councillor Joe Anderson and Liam Fogarty.

Danielle Hill moved into her three-bedroom house on the Ellergreen development in Norris Green two months ago with her boyfriend Lee and their eightmonth-old daughter Lily. It’s the couple’s first home and they bought it through HomeBuy Direct.
I lived not far from here in Broadway with my parents so I knew the area well. I didn’t want to rent as I saw it as wasting money so we had already started saving up for a deposit when we heard about HomeBuy Direct (a government scheme by which the buyer only pays five per cent of the deposit with the rest covered by a loan) and the people at Ellergreen were really lovely and helpful. We’re decorating at the moment, which is a bit of a nightmare with an eight month old. Plus my boyfriend is in the army so he’s away a lot. One of my favourite pieces in my house is my award – my friends and I had a Come Dine With Me style competition and I won the award for being a ‘Yummy Mummy’. It takes pride of place on my table.

My clock is perfect for the kitchen because of its cutlery frame. I bought it in B&M. The colour scheme in my kitchen is black and white and I bought my black and white bread bin and tea and coffee pots from Matalan, which is one of my favourite shops for home-ware.
The landscape pictures of New York and Liverpool that we have in the lounge and hallway are from a shop called Kingsdale, which has now closed down. You can tell they’re old – the New York one still has the twin towers in! They are Lee’s, he brought them with him when we moved in.
I want to get a fireplace in the living room. I’d love one with a big surround so it can be a real focal point. My corner couch is from Next – another favourite of mine. I got my curtains and cushions from there too. They’re quite neutral which I really like.
Lily loves Minnie Mouse so we have lots of Minnie dolls and pictures in her room, like this canvas of Minnie and Daisy Duck from the Disney Shop.
One of the best things about the house is the size. It’s a three bedroom and it’s really spacious. We do plan on having more children - although not right now – so it’s good to know we have the space.

At 26 Beth Tweddle is the UK’s most successful gymnast, taking home gold multiple times at both the European and World Championships and the Commonwealth Games. The Cheshire-bred gymnast tells Your Move how she’s now facing her biggest challenge yet as she prepares for the Olympics on home soil.
INTERVIEW BY CHRISTINE TONER You’ve obviously competed in the Olympics before but how does it feel to be preparing for the games in your own country? It’s both a massive honour and a massive challenge, every athlete wants to go to the Olympics but to have it on home soil is just a massive bonus. What do you think it means for sport in the country? Obviously there are the popular sports like athletics that people automatically think to take their children to, but for some of the low profile sports, having the Olympics here will help give them a massive profile. Parents and children might think of going to watch fencing or handball, the lesser-known sports, and there is probably a club for them out there they could attend, they’re just not as well known. You’ve been visiting schools in the region recently, why was that? I teamed up with Liverpool city council for the Live and Learn Project, which aims to get the children inspired with 2012 coming up. It was nice for them to see an athlete who has already been to the Olympics. On a personal basis, I want to inspire kids to get into sport. Sometimes they don’t realise 48 Your Move
the opportunity is there on their doorstep. I’ve set up five gymnastic academies in Liverpool and one in Birkenhead just to give them that chance. When I was young I had a 20-minute drive to my first club and then an hour drive to my second club. Parents can’t always fit that in or can’t afford to do that whereas if it’s in a local school they can walk to it. Are you noticing more enthusiasm towards the sport since the Olympics were awarded to London? Yes, a lot of parents and teachers are saying their children have started gymnastics because they have seen me on the television. It was more when I won my first world title and gymnastics started to get the bigger profile, gym clubs said they had a mass of phone calls the next day from children wanting to do gymnastics so it’s definitely raised the profile. You’ve won some impressive medals, which one means the most to you? Probably the World Title in 2009 because it was on home ground and I was always known as a bar worker so to come back and win a floor title was kind of unexpected by everyone. Despite being so successful, you still attended university and got a degree in sports science, how important was it for you to get that? There were a couple of reasons why I did that. I’d done a year of just training and I found it really quite hard to
switch off. My coach was very encouraging for me to go back to education whether it was university or college and it just so happened that Liverpool John Moores university was offering a scholarship scheme at the time. I found the two complimented each other. If I’d had a bad day in the gym I was able to switch off from it and vice versa, if I couldn’t cope with the essays I was able to go the gym. I was lucky in the fact that the university was very supportive, if there were any deadlines that clashed with competitions they did everything they could to try and help me. Plus my friends knew that obviously my training was my number one priority. What will your summer itinerary be? When will you move down to London? We’re not due to move down to London until around the 22 July but the team doesn’t actually get announced until the 27 June so I don’t know whether I’m selected yet. That keeps you on your toes. Finally, what legacy do you hope the Olympics will leave on the UK? For kids to be inspired that if they have a dream they can follow it. There’ll be a lot of success stories in the Olympics, there’ll also be a lot of sad stories but hopefully the kids can see that an athlete has achieved their dream even if they’ve had two years of injury or they’ve come back to an Olympics having not achieved at another Olympics. I just want it to show kids that with a lot of determination and hard work you can achieve your dreams.

GLAM Lateral thinking ROCK LIVING We have taken the plunge and had an architect around to our property to draw up some plans for a two-storey extension to the side of the house. We like the plans they presented for the top floor but we are concerned that the ground floor extension is going to create a very long and narrow room. Ideally, we wanted the additional room downstairs to be a second lounge, however after looking at the plans we are reconsidering our plans. Do you think we could make a long and narrow room work as a lounge?
I think you have made a wise decision to question if the proposed extension is giving you the desired end results. When there is only enough space to add a narrow extension, let’s say to the side of a property along a boundary, it is usually better to use the space to enlarge existing living areas than have a room that will cause you problems. Is it possible to incorporate the extra space into your kitchen? If it is, it could give you the opportunity to have a large open plan kitchen/family room, which would be the perfect alternative to a second lounge.
I want to redecorate the feature wall in the hallway with wallpaper that is a statement, bold and fashionable. I have no preference to colour as anything could work. Could you suggest wallpaper that isn’t wildly expensive?

change a piece on the day we can do that, when most jewellers will send it off and have a two to four week turnaround on jewellery. “We don’t just have the standard jewellery you can find in any shop; our range is more exclusive, more designer.” In an age of multitudes of shops, the one you choose to frequent is crucially becoming about service and affordability. lympic fever is hitting the streets of Liverpool. The city’s best sporting stars gathered at the Echo Arena, where they met their fans in a day packed with taster sessions and demonstrations, on everything from gymnastics to fencing. The Festival of Olympic Sports day kicked off in style with 500 youngsters from Liverpool’s Music Support Service choir giving a live performance. Former Olympic swimming bronze medalist Steve Parry, gymnastic champions Beth Tweddle and Hannah Whelan, gold medalist boxer Natasha Jonas and former British table tennis athlete Mark Palmer gave demonstrations showing why they’re Britain’s stars.
