WORKING FROM HOME While your business is still growing it makes sense to work from home. Home-based businesses are a popular option for many types of

Council members voted 63 to three in favour of skipping a referendum and heading straight into a mayoral system. Currently in the running to lead it are council leader Joe Anderson, former BBC journalist Liam Fogarty and celebrity hair-stylist Herbert Howe. However while there are only three hats in the ring so far, other names are being bandied about. Phil Redmond for example, the
Liverpool-born writer and chairman of National Museums Liverpool, has refused to rule out running – instead claiming he wants to know more about the job before making a decision. The change in governance means Liverpool will be offered a “city deal” by the government in the form of investment fund of new and existing public and private money, initially worth £130m, but with the potential to grow to £500m - £1bn.

AS SEEN ON TV Letting and estate agent Northwood has reported its recent TV advertising campaign as a success across the Liverpool region. The TV ad campaign ran from January 16 to February 5 and was aired during popular ITV programmes including Coronation Street and Emmerdale, across three ITV regions – Granada in the North-West, Lookaround in the Borders and STV in Scotland. The February meeting of the Property Investor’s Network (PIN) will see speaker Peter Hogan, an experienced property investor, explaining to investors how they can legally possess and claim empty properties for free through adverse possession. Hugh Mcgowan has been living in the old Gateacre Community School building since September as part of Ad Hoc’s guardian scheme, which offers cheap rents for short-term living accommodation.
I’m studying for a degree and was looking for somewhere cheap to live. I saw an advert online that read ‘Do you fancy living in a school for £40 a week?’ - That’s the type of rent that I paid 15 years ago! The idea of living in a school really appealed to me, not just because of the cost but the fact you get to live somewhere different. Plus I get so much space and there’s a gym I can play basketball in. By doing this I get to live in Gateacre and there’s no way I could afford to do that otherwise. I pay £35 a week because I’m head guardian and I have a responsibility to keep my eye on the place. The only negative is the nearest toilet in the building is 100m walk away. The water is only connected there and that can be a particularly cold walk when you get a shower in the morning.
My flat is the old staffroom – the teacher’s pigeonholes are still up. When I moved in it seemed a bit too big but once I brought some of my things in it became really cosy. I really like the colourful throw on my couch. A friend of mine made it for me. It’s really bright and cheerful. The cricket stumps were left in the PE department and they were going to be thrown away so I kept them. The large protractor and the measuring stick were left in classrooms. I also have one of the old blackboards and my coffee table was actually a table from the canteen but I cut the legs down.
My toy rabbit is quite special to me. My dad bought him for my mum when she found out she was pregnant with me so it means a lot to me. The fairy lights were my sisters but I’ve had them for a while and they brighten the place up. On my first day it was a bit like being in a zombie film. Everything was left as it was, all of the furniture was here, all of the displays were on the wall and registers and schoolbooks were on the desks. It was a bit post apocalyptic. When I told my mum I was living in an abandoned school her first question was “are you squatting?” Before university I used to work in forestry and I was away all the time sleeping in portacabins and caravans so I’m used to living somewhere unusual.

Although most widely known as troubled Ronnie Mitchell in EastEnders, it is in theatre that Sam Womack is making waves with her performance as Nellie in South Pacific, coming to Liverpool this month. With a lot of sun, sand and singing the world of musicals couldn’t be further from her Eastenders’ baby swap storyline, as she tells us just how different her life is post-Ronnie Mitchell.
How did you get involved in South Pacific? I love Rodgers & Hammerstein and South Pacific is one of their finest musicals. When I heard about this incredible production in New York that was winning just about every award going, well, I really wanted to be a part of it. Tell us about your character Nellie. Nellie is wonderfully naïve and she has this huge learning curve, with redemption at the end, so it’s a real
rollercoaster part and one of the great female roles. Marrying your voice with an orchestra is wonderful. Even when I have been tired, or suffering with a cold, singing is euphoric. You hear the orchestra start and it’s the most incredible feeling; you just forget everything else. Are you excited to be performing in Liverpool? I am especially excited about taking the show to Liverpool. All my in-laws are in Liverpool and I’ve been an adopted Scouser since I did Liverpool 1. Liverpudlians are just so responsive. If they enjoy something, they are on their feet. What’s it like to swap the explosive storylines of Eastenders for the theatre? When I was doing EastEnders I was often away at five-thirty in the morning and not getting back home until eight or nine at night, by which time my children were in bed. With South Pacific I can commute to many of the theatres, so I get to share the children’s day, which is lovely. Some people are bringing their children and grandchildren on the proviso that they are seeing Ronnie from EastEnders, but then they just fall in love with the show and forget that it isn’t Albert Square. Theatre is a wonderful home for children. Theatre people are a warm bunch and I’ve always
found it a very healthy and happy place for children. My daughter Lily’s first introduction to theatre was a 26 piece orchestra rehearsing at the Barbican. I saw the same look of rapture on her face that I remember having on mine the first time I heard an orchestra playing Gershwin; it moved her in the same way as it moved me. Do you plan to stay in theatre for a while yet? I love the show and the company so much that it is a very hard job to leave. I was contemplating a couple of television roles, but I was so happy in South Pacific that I decided to stay on. There seems to be a new wave of young independent filmmakers and I have been reading some great scripts recently. The characters are not as stereotypical as maybe they are in larger budget films, and some of these scripts are really exciting. I’d love to do some Shakespeare, all the angst and crying I did in EastEnders has served me well. Are there any plans for you to reprise the role of Ronnie in Eastenders? I had a wonderful time there and I’d never rule out going back, but Ronnie was a very damaged character and I think she’s probably best left alone for a while. I was considering getting an armchair but I don’t want to opt for another traditional leather chair. Could you suggest a chair that would work well with my existing sofas?
We are thinking about converting our basement into a cinema /entertainment room for the whole family as we need more space but don’t want to move. We’re worried about the expense of the conversion and how to go about it. Do you think it will add value to our property? And what would you consider to be the main areas to begin the conversion with?
Extending into the basement can create a dynamic and exciting space but it is one of the most expensive ways of extending the living space in your home. I would always recommend having the expertise of an experienced architect and builder as this kind of conversion is a specialist job. You can expect to pay around £3,000 per square metre for an average conversion, so it is worth working out before you begin the project if the value of your property is higher than the cost of the work.
A dream bed with a difference I’ve never been happy with the bedroom in my city centre apartment. It is on a mezzanine floor, which you can see from the living area but because the furniture in it in lacks any design element, the space looks rather unfinished. I am having a storage system designed and built in the room which should help to clear any clutter but I now need to find a bed that is a real show stopper. SECOND GIANT REVEALED It has been announced that a second giant will take to the streets of Liverpool as part of the city’s Titanic tribute Sea Odyssey weekend. French organiser Royal de Luxe revealed that the Little Girl Giant’s “uncle” will be a staggering 50ft, towering over his 30ft niece and taller than the mechanical
spider that roamed the city in 2008. Mattuie Bony, director of RDL, said: “We were very keen for the show to extend into north Liverpool, making this the most challenging route in terms of length and gradient which our Liliputiens will have travelled with the Giant Uncle.” The story surrounding the two giants will remain a secret until a few weeks before the event, but it is inspired by a moving letter written by a real Liverpool girl. The event will take place in north Liverpool and around the city centre from 20-22 April.

An app has been designed to allow parents to ensure that their children are safe and have reached their destination. Keep Me Safe uses the latest GPS technology allowing parents to track their children’s journey and allows the child to alert their parent if they feel they are in danger. child’s rucksack or have your teenagers switch on the tracker when they are out to alert you if they get into trouble. We give people what they want, so we can be speaking to them every week or every month giving the Rightmove stats, updating them on the market and what we’re doing. “We had a Champagne and Canape night recently and will continue to run them for investors and landlords; we’re

THRESHOLD FESTIVAL 2012 fter its huge success in February 2011, the Threshold Festival returned to Liverpool and this year’s focus was bigger and better, bringing together more bands and bigger art installations. Music fans descended onto the Baltic triangle in Liverpool’s city centre to watch a wide selection of up and coming and established acts including Sandi Thom, The Hummingbirds and Bring the Soul. Unlike last year, the festival was no longer under one roof, this time expanding to several venues. One thing that didn’t change however was the festivals dedication to championing grassroots.
