Race for mayor hots up The race to become Liverpool’s first elected mayor has begun, with twelve candidates throwing their hats into the ring. Nominations have now closed and the candidates have until May 3 to convince voters of their credentials. Among the candidates are leader of the city council, Joe Anderson, Liberal Democrat Richard Kemp and Conservative representative Tony Caldeira. Adam Heatherington will stand for UKIP, John Coyne for the Green party and Steve Radford for the Liberal Party. The Trade Union and Socialist Party will be
represented by Tony Mulhearn while Mike Whitby will stand for the British National Party and Peter Tierney will represent the National Front. Independents Liam Fogarty and Jeff Berman complete the 12. Earlier this year council members voted 63 to three in favour of skipping a referendum and head straight into a mayoral system. The change in governance means Liverpool will be offered a “city deal” by the government in the form of an investment fund of new and existing public and private money, initially worth £130m.

Interview with Jamie Oliver from Lostprophets
FROM LA TO LIVERPOOL Jamie Oliver from Lostprophets is genuinely excited; you can hear it in his voice. To date the Welsh nu-metal rockers have sold around 3.5 million records worldwide and they have just released their fifth studio album ‘Weapons’ and will play Liverpool’s 02 Academy on 19 April as part of their UK tour. We caught up with him to talk about life in LA, skateboarding in the Welsh Valley and the Scouse accent.
INTERVIEW BY KATE HANRATTY You’ve just got back from Australia and are about to start another European tour, where are you based? I’ve been based in LA for six years. Growing up in Wales I was always watching skateboarding at Venice Beach on the TV and then going out into the valley putting my coat on and trying to do skateboarding tricks. I always wanted the Californian lifestyle, even then. When I got a chance to move to LA it was a no-brainer. How does it feel to be on the cusp of another big European tour? I couldn’t be more enthusiastic. I’m really looking forward to it. There is something to be said for this new chapter we are about to embark on. Betrayed, our last album was the end of a chapter. We’ve actually outran all of our contracts with recording and managements companies so we have got a new team across the board. What can you tell us about Weapons? Ian (Watkins, lead singer) said it feels like our debut album The Fake Sound of

Progress again. We’ve exorcised our demons. It’s new and fresh. After 12 years of doing this, it should be easy to create an album but we are six creative Welsh guys. There’s an awful lot of passion involved and sometimes that passion is explosive. This record is like the electrically charged nucleus of an atom and the six of us are pulling and pushing on it each way to make it the best it can be. We’re really proud of it. We could have made it the same old, same old but we like to challenge ourselves. With our last album The Betrayed we scrapped a whole record’s worth of material. We didn’t want to put it out if we didn’t believe in it. We have put everything, our whole part on this recording. More than ever we have trusted our gut instincts and stopped looking at what is in and what is out. What can you tell us about your new single Bring Em’ down? It’s different isn’t it? The first song from all of our albums is always a call to arms. When we were younger we used to listen to Public Enemy and Onyx who do Hip-Hop fighting talk songs. We did a little bit of that with this one. It’s also coming from the underdog mentality, being Welsh it’s about feeling like the underdog.
How does it feel to be putting out a fifth album? It’s incredible. Something has happened to us. I for one am very focused right now, I think it comes with age and wisdom or maybe having a child. It’s like I’ve got a second wind. I’m fired up. I will be enjoying every moment of this tour and cherishing it. They say footballers peak at 20 whereas with UFC fighters they’re in their late 30’s and early 40’s fighting in the ring. I think you get to a certain age and you feel like you give up caring a little bit so you give it your all. What are you listening to at the minute? I’m listening to the new Young Guns album. It is right up my street and they are supporting us on tour. Where are you looking forward to playing the most? The UK without a doubt, all of the UK is our home. We have the best fans in the world. I see the same faces that have supported us since the beginning. It’s unbelievable. I’m so excited to still be doing this. It’s a pure love for what we do for us and I thank the fans for putting me here. I have to say I love the Scouse accent too. Our tour manager is Keith O’Neil who plays drums for Cast. We love his accent.

FANCY FABRIC I am looking for some fabrics that I could use to cover a large sofa with six feather-filled back cushions. We have recently bought a new sofa for the lounge but we love our old sofa and we think with the right fabric it would look fantastic in the conservatory. Ideally we’d like a patterned fabric, in red, and if possible a matching coordinating fabric for the cushions. Could you please point us in the right direction?
Wireless wish I have two lamps either side of my sofa but I don’t like the wiring showing. I have tried to hide it as much as possible but all my attempts fail as my sofa is in the centre of the room and I have a wooden floor, so nothing will allow me to attempt to cover up the mess. Are there any lights available that don’t require any form of wiring? Yes, wireless lamps are available. I like the ‘Live. Anywhere’ collection by Inspired By Design. This innovative lighting collection designed by Linda Allen, includes decorative table and floor lamps that are completely portable. They can even be used outside. The lights use a custom eight-watt LED bulb that emits a similar light to a 50-watt incandescent bulb. This will allow enough light for reading. It’s a delightful collection that would definitely solve your wiring dilemma.
PERFECT PAPERS I think the new collection Compass by Andrew Martin could be ideal. With its vintage images, ethnic patterns and rich textures, the collection is farranging and inspiring. The Navaho fabric - available in red - has a wonderful ethnic zig-zag and diamond pattern and would look dramatic on a large sofa in a conservatory. Coordinate this fabric with the red and beige stripe of the Mohave fabric from the same collection for your back cushions and your old sofa will be transformed into a luxury piece of furniture reflecting faraway places and travel. andy Rourke, head of HomesHub, is an excellent advertisement for practicing what you preach. Having just bought her own home on a Bellway development in Roby she is now encouraging first time buyers to come and get independent free advice at the 2012 First Time Buyers Show. HomesHub, the government’s affordable homes agent in the North West and part of the Plus Dane Group, is hosting the show, which takes place on April 21 at the Halliwell Jones stadium in Warrington. “We’ve had hundreds of tickets downloaded already,” says Sandy. “But if you don’t have a ticket on the day we won’t turn you away, there will be free parking and lots of free information.” As a recent buyer herself, Sandy understands how first timers feel. “I know how daunting it can be to buy your first home,” says

Sandy. “Not a lot of people understand what shared ownership or shared equity means. People hear shared ownership and think 'who do I have to share the house with?' There’s an overkill of terms sometimes and we can explain them,” she adds. The show will give would-be buyers the chance to have their questions answered. “There will be developers there, independent financial advisors and solicitors,” says Sandy. “People can come along, talk and get free independent advice. I think people think ‘I can’t afford to buy a house, I’m priced out of the market’ but there are products that can help which we can advise you about.” Warrington was chosen as the location for the show because it’s a good mid-point for the whole region but there will be developers exhibiting who have affordable homes in Liverpool, Sefton and Knowsley. not for profit organization, promotes affordable home ownership across the whole of Merseyside and Cheshire. “We give people advice as to what schemes are best for them,” explains Sandy. We want to make the neighbourhoods we serve better places to live by giving people more choice of property and tenure types.” We meet at the refreshingly different Sidedoor in Liverpool’s historic Georgian quarter where the interior is bright and appealing, the vintage furniture has been lovingly restored and there are fresh heather sprigs on each table. Sandy orders chicken Caesar salad while I opt for the veal meatballs. Sandy’s salad dish comes with bacon, anchovies and croutons and is “delicious.” My meal is so well presented with chilli and sage that it looks too good to eat. The fresh tomato sauce leaves a lot of other meatball sauces far behind. As we tuck in Sandy explains some of the misconceptions first time buyers might have. “Since the mortgage market has contracted people feel they
haven’t got a big enough deposit so they might be living with parents or renting from a private landlord - which is fine – but there are products such as shared ownership, shared equity and first buy where people only need a small deposit. We can educate people about these schemes and independently recommend which is best for them.” The First Time Buyers Show then will prove extremely useful. As well as seminars throughout the day on the process of buying your first home, there’ll also be the chance to win prizes from sponsor IKEA - the perfect coup for a first time buyer. warm Liverpool evening saw crowds celebrating the opening of Carluccio’s new Metquarter restaurant. The Italian godfather of gastronomy Antonio Carluccio came to Liverpool to celebrate the opening of his 59th restaurant. The author of 13 recipe books and star of the BBC’s ‘Two Greedy Italians’ said: “I now hope Liverpool will be famous for three things, the Beatles, football and Carluccios.” A traditional Italian accordion player serenaded the guests with Italian favourites such as ‘That’s Amore', while guests including Liz McClaron, Jude Cisse and the cast of Desperate Scousewives were treated to complimentary prosecco, mouth-watering canapés and the restaurant’s signature dish of mushroom risotto.
