nless you’ve been on another planet for the last few weeks you’ll know that 2012 marks the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. In 1952 her Majesty was made Queen following the death of her father George VI. To celebrate the jubilee we take a look at what else was happening all those years ago.

IT WAS the surge in property prices back in the early 2000s that contributed towards the credit crunch – as average prices skyrocketed to £184,131. Even with house prices taking a tumble the average property today, according to Nationwide, sits at £162,722. Sixty years ago house prices were just a tad more modest with the average property costing £1,891. New houses would go for around £2,107 while older properties hovered around the £1,524 mark. As in most cities, Liverpool’s council was still battling to replace houses bombed during the Second World War. As a result many areas of the city centre were redeveloped and “overspill” towns were created on the outskirts (including in Kirkby and Skelmersdale) to house those people who’d been shipped out of the city centre streets.

LIVERPOOL FC finished the 1951/52 season in 11th place (in division 1) with 43 points. 1952 was also the year Liverpool broke it’s own attendance record when a massive 61,905, headed to Anfield to watch the home side take on Wolves in the FA Cup fourth round, a match they won 2-1 thanks to goals from Bob Paisley and Cyril Done.

EVERTON were in the second division in the 1951/52 season having been relegated the year before. They finished the season 7th and wouldn’t be promoted to the first division again until the 1953/54 season – the same season their local rivals Liverpool were relegated.

BACK IN 1952 New Musical Express magazine started the first ever UK music chart, by polling record stores to find out which records were selling the most. The first ever number one was Al Martino’s “Here in my heart” which stayed at the top spot for nine weeks, giving Martino the first number one of 1953. While the 50’s would go on to be dominated by a certain swivelhipped singer from Memphis, Tennessee, he would not start releasing records until 1953. During the 1950s Liverpoolborn singers Frankie Vaughan and Michael Holliday became household names. And of course the music world was soon to be set alight by four lads from Liverpool - bringing with them the Merseybeat sound that would take over a generation but the swinging sixties were still far off on the horizon when Elizabeth II took the throne.

IN THE 1950s film was big business with movie lovers heading to the many picture houses in Liverpool to catch the latest US box office smash. From the Gaumont Palace cinema in Anfield and the Rialto Cinema in Toxteth to London Road’s great Paramount Theatre and Lime Street’s Palais De Luxe to name just a few, Liverpool was full of ornate and impressive cinemas. In 1952 cinema-goers saw the likes of Charlton Heston, Elizabeth Taylor and Gene Kelly grace the Silver Screen with The Greatest Show on Earth, Ivanhoe and Singin’ in the Rain amongst the top grossing films.

IN 1952 TV VIEWERS were treated to the likes of Come Dancing, Andy Pandy and Muffin the Mule. The Flower Pot Men made the television debut, along with Harry Corbett’s puppet bear Sooty. But the biggest TV event of the year was the funeral of King George VI, televised on February 15.

Sutton Kersh auctions top £12 million  Total sales from Sutton Kersh auctions this year have topped a whopping £12 million, after the May auction generated sales of £3,249,815. More landlords show their CLASS  Liverpool landlords are continuing to prove they’re at the top of their game by signing up to a voluntary accreditation scheme. The council led Citywide Landlord Accreditation Safety Scheme (CLASS) now has over 300 landlords signed up, with a whopping 1500 properties accredited. A further 60 applications have been submitted this month with more expected before May is out. CLASS is a free scheme for private landlords, which recognises good quality, well managed private rented accommodation. It sets out minimum safety, contractual and service delivery standards that tenants can expect when they rent accommodation. These standards are clear, understandable and readily achievable. Landlords who apply to become accredited must submit properties along with safety certificates for accreditation. Sheila Kirk, landlord accreditation officer at Liverpool Council, says while any voluntary accreditation scheme will likely

have slow growth she’s confident the numbers of accredited property and landlords will continue to increase. Sheila’s mission is to urge all landlords and letting agents into joining CLASS. Sheila believes CLASS represents landlords who are working together to improve standards in private rented housing. She says: “People seeking to rent accommodation in the private rental sector don’t always know who or where the good landlords are. There is also a perception that

all private rented sector accommodation is poor. Landlord Accreditation raises the profile of private landlords who look after their properties to provide safe and decent accommodation for rent. Record number of lots for Venmore auction  Liverpool auctioneer, Venmore, will be offering 61 lots under the hammer at its next auction due to be held at the end of the month. The auction, taking place Wednesday 30 May, 2012 at 1.00pm in Liverpool Town Hall, features a mix of lots including residential, commercial and development opportunities for landlords and investors, with a number of lots especially in need of refurbishment.

Few people in the entertainment world can boast a career as long and successful as Rolf Harris. Aged 22 he left his native Australia to study art in England and went on to become a household name both here and downunder. Now the six-decade career of the artist, singer, presenter and musician is being celebrated with a retrospective exhibition at the Walker Art Gallery. We caught up with the man himself to find out what inspires him.

INTERVIEW BY CHRISTINE TONER How does it feel to have an exhibition here? It is hugely exciting for me. I’ve been drawing, painting and singing as long as I can remember and to see so many of my life’s endeavours together in one exhibition is hard for me to believe. Do you have any favourite pieces? I particularly like the lovely painting of the Walker Art Gallery. That’s worked wonderfully well. When did you do it? When I first came to see the gallery to decide whether we could do the exhibition or not. The organisers asked if there was any chance of me doing some paintings of iconic Liverpool views. They wanted around half a dozen paintings of different views from across Liverpool, which would be included in the exhibition, so they took me around in a car to look at everything. The sketch of the walker came from one of those photos I took. It just worked like a dream. There’s another one I did of the Catholic Cathedral that I really like. And I painted John, one of the attendants at the Walker. We did him a print of that

and I signed it. Your father was talented and your grandfather was actually an artist, is that what inspired you? Yes, granddad was a portrait painter. He’s the one I was trying to emulate when I came over to England to study painting. My dad was a frustrated painter really because my granddad used to say to all the boys of the family ‘Whatever you do, don’t become an artist like me because you’ll always be broke and you’ll always be begging people to buy a painting’. He talked them out of it all the time but he encouraged the girls in the family because it was a gentile thing for Victorian women to learn the art of watercolour painting. What did your father and grandfather say when you became a painter? My granddad was dead long before I became a painter. I never met him; he died before I was born. My father was very pleased with me. He was knocked out that I was an art student. He had the talent but if you don’t do something when you’re young you never do it because you become afraid you can’t do it. When you’re young you’re fearless, you don’t know what you can’t do, you can do anything. That was me. I jumped right into it. You’ve had a hugely successful career and achieved many things. Back

It’s so close to the city’s universities and Liverpool ONE, it’s an ideal place to invest.” As we finish our meals we both agree that Allerton Road Bar & Restaurant is the ideal spot for a working lunch, especially with summer just around the corner. The restaurant is completely glass fronted and the glass slides aside to allow a feeling of outdoor dining but from inside.

CULTURE: AN ICON’S ART Sixties icon Marianne Faithfull has curated an exhibition entitled Innocence and Experience at Tate Liverpool.

The exhibition marks a return to Liverpool for the former girlfriend of The Rolling Stones’ Mick Jagger. Marianne lived in nearby Ormskirk as a child while her father completed his doctorate at The University of Liverpool. Singer and actress Marianne said: “I was brought up to appreciate art. I have been fortunate that my life is intertwined with artists and performers whose work is a continuing source of inspiration, which has guided the selection of works for this exhibition. I am delighted to be able to work with Tate Liverpool and with John Dunbar to realise this project.” The free exhibition runs until September 2.

Music Blink 182 at the Echo Arena Pop punk rockers Blink 182 will play the Liverpool Echo Arena as part of their first UK arena tour in over eight years. Despite the band having to pull out of some earlier US tour dates due to drummer Travis Barker’s illness the show will go on with UK tour dates still expected to go ahead starting on 7 June.

The bands breakthrough album, Enema of the State, was released in 1999 and went on to sell in excess of 15 million copies worldwide. Blink 182 will play the Liverpool echo arena 12 July and will be supported by The All-American Rejects and The Blackout. Tickets available from £33.19.

Thing about Liverpool

Liverpool is such a creative city; the people seem to be quite arty and creative. There aren’t that many cities that can say they have so many creative people coming from one place.

Musician

I am biased but my brother, Tom Figgins (www.tomfiggins.com), is a really talented singer-songwriter. We’ve been listening to his CD in the workroom at my shop in London to keep us calm in the busy run up to Ascot.

Restaurant

I love Medlar on the Kings Road in London, I always want to eat everything on the menu, particularly the puddings!

Ocean’s Eleven – George Clooney, Brad Pitt, what’s not to love?

Holiday destination

I lived and worked in Meribel in France for four years so I love going back. I go skiing in the winter but it’s beautiful in the summer too.

Food

Chocolate, or anything from Ottolenghi which is just round the corner from my shop – I guess that adds up to an Ottolenghi chocolate brownie.

Item of clothing

My “Seriously Me” shift dress from Suzannah (www.suzannah.com) is also amazingly flattering and has solved the day to evening conundrum. I think a hat completes an outfit, people always stand taller and look better.
