Liverpool barrister Kathryn Hughes was struggling to find a property to fit her growing family. After her mum sadly passed away in 2009, Kathryn and her criminal
solicitor husband Ricky decided her father Wilf would move in with them and their three children. The family wanted to stay in Woolton but unfortunately finding a property big enough for the whole clan would leave little change from £1 million. So Kathryn did what millions of us dream of doing every day - she decided to design her own home. And so ‘Rosewood’ was born. The stunning six-bedroom property includes a feature sedum roof, a double height void dining room and a separate annexe nicknamed ‘Wilf ’s wing,’ where Kathryn’s father lives. The Hughes family were no strangers to self-builds, having previously built their own home on Linkstor Road, Woolton. “The benefit of building your own home is that you can plan it exactly how you want it,” says Kathryn. While the architects were instrumental in the exterior design of the property, the interior was modeled as a higher specification version of the family’s first home. The designs included special features such as a wood-burning stove and under floor heating. Mid-way through the build Kathryn discovered she was expecting her fourth child. “We altered the design to make the playroom bigger,” says Kathryn. The build started in August 2011 and was completed in April of this year just in time to welcome the family’s latest addition Lottie Rose who was born in a birthing pool in the living room. If these images of the Hughes’ dream home have got you itching to design your own, Kathryn says its always wise to seek the help of experts. “We did call in the professionals to manage this build,” says Kathryn. “Sometimes people can try to take on too much and they don’t have the necessary expertise. It does cost more to bring professionals in but I don’t regret a penny.” John McCall Architects helped design the property and the builder was Russell Mitton at Caldway Homes Liverpool. “This is our forever home now,” says Kathryn. “We have designed it so we have everything the family needs and I could never see us moving.”
BUILDING YOUR OWN HOME If you’re thinking of building your own home like Kathryn, you may find these tips useful. Know your budget There’s no point bankrupting yourself for your dream home. Work out what you can afford and be careful not to go over it. Have a contingency plan When taking on a project of this magnitude things can – and inevitably will – go wrong at some point. Make sure you have a contingency plan in place to cover all eventualities
Bring in the experts You might have tons of ideas but you need more than ideas to make this project a success. Follow Kathryn’s example and bring in the experts. Don’t lose your vision While it’s important to have professional help remember that the reason you’re doing this is so that you can have some creative control over the design of your house. Your architects will tell you what is and isn’t feasible but make sure you don’t have to give up too many of your ideas.

Communities urged to support ‘The 20 Effect’ campaign Liverpool City Council and Liverpool Primary Care Trust (PCT), with the backing of Merseyside Police, have launched a new initiative looking to increase the number of residential roads with 20mph speed limits. The 20 Effect, a speed reduction campaign, aims to reduce the number of road traffic collisions in Liverpool by at least 54 every year, through awareness, education and safety training. The campaign will see Liverpool City Council and Liverpool PCT work directly with community groups, schools and residents as part of a number of ’20 Effect’ activities. Events
planned throughout the coming months include ‘The Big 20 Protest’ with local primary schools, ‘The Big 20 Trial’ with Liverpool’s School’s Parliament, amongst many more. Liverpool city council’s cabinet member for regeneration and transport councillor Malcolm Kennedy, says: “The 20 Effect is an incredibly important campaign. We want to create a thriving, healthy city for living in, rather than just a thoroughfare for vehicles and an increase in 20mph residential roads will play a major part in helping us achieve that.” Chief Inspector John Hogan, head of Merseyside Police's Roads Policing Department, says: “Merseyside Police welcomes any reduction in speed which may
drive down the number of people killed or seriously injured on our roads. The 20 Effect campaign sends out the message that we all need to make positive speed reductions in order to keep people safe in Liverpool.” The city is taking its lead from other local authorities, including Warrington, where schemes have seen a reduction in the number of collisions by up to 25% and speeds by 6.3mph. Liverpool City Council along with the Liverpool PCT is hoping to see a
similar, if not more significant impact in Liverpool.

Andrew Louis offers help to tenants A local estate agent is advising leaseholders that they have the right to manage their own blocks instead of paying expensive service charges. Jamie Mead business development manager at Andrew Louis, says that the last two blocks the agent has visited have taken advantage of their right to manage (RTM) and are reaping the rewards. The right to manage is the right for leaseholders of a building containing flats to take over the management of the building. Leaseholders can force the transfer of the landlord's management functions to a special company set up by them. The right was introduced not
just as a means of gaining control from bad landlords but also to empower leaseholders to take responsibility for the management of their block. Jamie says: “Leaseholders can benefit from being hands on through nominated directors and will have the security of knowing that their interests are a priority. They can keep their block up to a high standard which will also protect their investments. Money can be saved and it will give the RTM company complete transparency on budgets.” Becoming an RTM can help the leaseholders regain control either to maintain the block themselves or appoint a reputable agent to work for them. ince Scottish band, The View, burst onto the scene with their first single “Wasted Little DJs” back in 2006, the Scots have come a long way with a string of albums and a number of festival performances under their belt. Kieren Webster, bass guitarist and occasional front man, took time out from his busy schedule to talk to Your Move about influences and the bands love for Liverpool.

Your newest album “Cheeky for a reason” is out on July 9th, what’s the inspiration behind the album? Just life in general, love, lust, all that kind of stuff. What’s your favourite song off the album? It depends, right now it’s ‘How Long’, which is going to be the first download coming out. It’s my favourite because I look forward to playing it live and fast, I like playing fast songs. Did you ever think the band would be as successful as they have been? No. Never. I always knew we would be making music together but I never thought we’d be making number one albums and stuff. Did you always want to be in a band or did you have different career plans? Since we started playing together when we were 15 I’d always known I wanted to be in a band, but before that I don’t know what I wanted to be, a musician or something boys usually want to be. Where do you see yourself in five years time? Hopefully on the road still

making music with the band. What do you like doing in your spare time? I like listening to records, walking and taking photographs. What do you enjoy most about touring? When we tour I enjoy the fact that you are in a different city every night. You always have a gig and it’s like you’re always busy. Do you prefer smaller or bigger venues? I like the small ones because it’s like you are playing in the middle of a party, and I like bigger ones because the scale of it all is just unreal. So they’ve both got their ups.
What’s one fact people probably wouldn’t know about you? There’s not very much to me, I just play in The View and write songs. You and the band relocated to Liverpool to write your fourth album Bread and Circuses, why Liverpool? We’ve toured in Liverpool a lot and liked it, it’s got loads of good studios and stuff. We worked together and wrote the songs in a flat in Aigburth. That’s why we came back to record the latest album this time as well, because we liked it so much in Liverpool. What’s your favourite thing about Liverpool? The people are really friendly; it’s got a lot of music history, the Beatles and things. I’m a fan of the Beatles. What’s the bands main inspiration behind your music? There are loads of inspirations, the main inspiration everyone in the band likes is probably Oasis. The Clash, The Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, they’re probably the biggies. But I mean everyone individually in the band has got their own influences that they like as well, so we have to meet in the middle around that area. The View – Played 02 Academy Liverpool 17 June. M
orecrofts Solicitors has been established in Liverpool longer than some of the city’s most recognisable landmarks. First set up in 1813, the law firm has been around longer than St George’s Hall, the iconic cathedrals and even the Liver Buildings. It is a firm which shows that with time comes the enviable quality of knowledge and experience. I meet Peter Pownall, a licenced conveyancer in Morecrofts’ commercial and property department, at a decidedly newer venue, the recently opened Chilli Pot on North John Street. With over 45 years of experience in this area, beginning his career at the age of 16 as an office junior and rising through the ranks, Peter is clearly well placed to explain the complicated nature of property law. He says that people looking to buy or sell a home should instruct solicitors as soon as possible during the process even before they speak to estate agents. “When buying property solicitors can give you advance information. It’s pointless paying out for surveys to be done or paying for searches if there is some covenant or condition on the property that is going to cause a problem. This happens when people are looking at buying property more often than you think.” Peter explains how the early advice of a good property lawyer is equally as important when selling a property as it is when purchasing. “Again go and see a solicitor early on. A solicitor can look and if there are any problems that need to be resolved before you sell the property. These things can take a couple of weeks so the quicker you identify these issues the better.” Recommended by the Chilli Pot’s friendly owner Kian, I try starters of Thai fish cakes with a wonderfully sweet chilli dip. Peter goes for fresh mussels to start,

cooked in a coconut sauce. “I’m quite adventurous with food, I’ve tried frog’s legs before, not many people like mussels but these are really nice.” We have mains of mango chicken and beef rendang. My mango chicken is beautifully sweet and comes with tasty jasmine coconut rice. Each dish comes presented with a colourful South East Asian flower. The restaurants fusion of South East Asian cuisine mirrors its owners’ heritage. As Kian is Malaysian and his wife from Laos, their menu offers dishes and flavours from both of their home
