Successful move for Marshallets  Marshallets’ expansion into the commercial district of Liverpool has been hailed a success after boosting the company’s city centre trade. The family owned estate agency already had a main south Liverpool base on St Mary’s Road in Cressington, but further plans to open a more central office were put into action back in January when a branch within The Plaza on Old Hall Street was also opened. The ongoing success of Marshallets, combined with the benefits a city centre branch can bring to an agency are said to have prompted the move and, according to senior consultant Sean Marshall, it has already been paying off. Sean says that while the expansion into such a prime location has provided an ideal “drop in” centre for clients and landlords, it has also helped the agency add to its portfolio of properties. “We’ve seen an increase in the city centre properties we’ve been picking up already,” he explains. Two members of staff are based at the Old Hall Street office, which is also used by other members of the team as it allows the company to have access to a range of shared conference and meeting room facilities.

Five star service award for Taylor Wimpey  Taylor Wimpey, which builds new homes across the North West, has been awarded the maximum five star rating for customer satisfaction for a second successive year in an independent survey by the Home Builders’ Federation (HBF). The UK-wide survey from the HBF is sent to all new home purchasers eight weeks after their moving in date, and asks them to rate their house builder on the service they received and the quality of their new home. From this, each company is awarded a star rating from one to five. Nine out of 10 Taylor Wimpey customers said they would recommend Taylor Wimpey to a friend, which officially ranks Taylor

Wimpey as a five star builder. Christine Aitken, regional sales and marketing director for Taylor Wimpey North West, says: “We take great pride in putting our customers first at every step of the new home buying process. This independent recognition of our achievements for the second year in a row clearly demonstrates our continued commitment to

Landlords warned over council tax changes  Landlords with empty properties are being warned to act quickly or face extra costs as changes to council tax have been introduced.

On 1 April Liverpool City Council brought in further charges for vacant properties, including landlords of furnished homes receiving a 20% discount but now being charged from day one of the property being empty. For vacant and unfurnished properties landlords can now receive a 100% discount for up to two months only, and properties which are empty for more than two years will be hit with a 50% premium. There is also no longer a discount for properties used as a

second home. Such changes to council tax are widespread although the scale of increases was partly down to individual local authorities’ discretion. Louis Anastasiou, managing director of Andrew Louis, says: “Councils are hard pressed and are trying to boost coffers with these charges. Landlords need to act straight away or they will be penalised. “The way the market is at the moment is that the lettings sector is still very strong, which is good news for landlords and they need to find tenants quite quickly. “Landlords need to be able to negotiate with tenants in order to let their properties a lot sooner and be realistic about valuations.” Your Move 55

My parents gifted a holiday home to me a few years ago – no money changed hands. Someone has mentioned to me that this should have been reported to HMRC and that Capital Gains Tax should have been paid. Is this right? It is not unusual for people to believe that if no cash changes hands in a situation like this, then no tax is due. However for family gifts such as this one the rules mean that the market value at the time of the gift should be used to calculate a capital gain or loss, which in this case should have been reported by your parents, with any tax arising also settled by them. What do I do to sort things out? And how could the taxman find out about the gift? Property transactions are one of the easiest things for HMRC to track down. In the UK they have access to the Land Registry and Stamp Duty Land Tax Forms (which are always completed even if no tax is due). They can also use third party notices to estate agents, banks, and solicitors, and information obtained from agreements with overseas governments, property websites etc. HMRC have very recently announced a new campaign - the Property Sales Campaign aimed at people who have sold or disposed of a property either in the UK or abroad, which is not their main home, and where they have not told HMRC. This could include: • Buy to let properties • Holiday homes • Main residences where private residence relief is restricted because it has been let during the period of ownership And in your case • Gifts of properties Obviously HMRC’s angle is to collect unpaid capital gains tax, but the facility can also be used to set the record straight where there has been an unreported sale/transfer at a loss. The campaign is mainly focused on transactions from 2007 onwards, but can be used to go back up to 20 years, and is available until 9 August 2013. Based on previous campaigns, those who do not take up this offer to disclose any tax irregularities on the sale of properties run the risk of a formal tax investigation by HMRC. Most of these tax investigations will be on a civil basis with a higher penalty rate, but HMRC also increasingly select some cases with a view to a criminal prosecution. Calculating Capital Gains is often complicated, particularly where the property has had different uses, so I would recommend that you seek help from an expert. As with many decisions you really do need to take independent financial and tax advice.  Estate agency Keppie Massie has brought a new member of staff on board as it continues to strengthen its team. Kevin Allen made the leap from Sequence, where he worked within the corporate lettings department, after being “headhunted” by the company. Since graduating from Liverpool University in 2003 designer Aruna Seth has taken the fashion world by storm. Celebrities from Kate Hudson and Olivia Munn to Pippa Middleton and Princess Beatrice have all been spotted at Red Carpet events wearing her designs, and the brand is stocked in Harrods shoe boudoir and over fifty stockists worldwide. We caught up with the in-demand designer to find out what inspires her, why she loves Liverpool and how shoe-making is in her blood.

stepping up the style stakes INTERVIEW BY KATE HANRATTY You’re originally from Surrey, why did you choose to study in Liverpool? Because the university has a great reputation and it is a vibrant city. Having lived in the city, what do you think about style in Liverpool? Liverpool ladies take the best care of themselves ever. Liverpool ladies are super glamorous and well-groomed. They take excellent pride in their appearances. The other thing about Liverpool is that they are always up-to-date on their trends and way ahead in the fashion stakes. I love the fact Liverpool is such a party city and they love a good night out there, the bar scene is great. Also the shopping is amazing. We used to have a great life during university. We spent a lot of it shopping and partying! And of course studying! Your family has a history of making shoes, could you tell us a bit more about this? I have a family heritage in shoes, my father has been making shoes for over 40 years and he is my biggest inspiration. Designing and creating beautiful shoes is in my blood. My father has worked extremely hard over decades to build up a successful shoe empire, he is my biggest influence.

My father encouraged me to work within his company from a young age, I was selling other children trainers at school and in the office around designers. We spent a lot of time travelling when I was younger and I went to see all the factories around the world. My father has a tremendous work ethic, he has built up a multi-million pound shoe empire in Russia, India, Europe and the UK; I’ve grown up watching him work long hours and put huge dedication into building his business. Watching my father has instilled a huge work ethic in me and I’d hope to be as successful as him. Did your own range take off straight away or did it take a while to gather speed? It takes a while to start-up as you need to build a brand and gain customer confidence. Passion, perseverance, openness and good customer service are key ingredients to the fashion industry. Being passionate about your brand and product is highly important; I get excited whenever I design a new shoe and see the first samples, I hope my enthusiasm comes across in my designs. You have to persevere and wish to be in the fashion industry for the long-term, keep chipping away at building relationships with buyers, clients and marketing the brand. Who would you most like to see wearing your shoes? I’d love to see Kate Middleton wearing our shoes as she is a style icon and gains so much interest in what she wears. She is doing a tremendous job of looking superbly classic and hasn’t put a

fashion foot wrong. She has a highly pressurised position of looking utterly fabulous at all times. I’d love to offer her some of our Aruna Seth flat ballerinas to run around after the new Royal baby! What is next for you in 2013? We’re looking to be more fashion focused this year and our new designs reflect this. We’ve moved away from being predominately bridal to more fashion. We have some great new styles out; like our new pointy toe classic heel in black patent, and the Venus shoe in a variety of colours. We’ve focused a great deal on the US the past few years, now we are looking more towards Asia as they love to shop out there. Ladies in Hong Kong live to shop, the city is one big shopping centre and they shop ‘till midnight out there!

The Lion King comes to Liverpool Disney’s spectacular theatre production of The Lion King will roar into the city next year for a sevenweek run at the Liverpool Empire. First seen in 1997, the acclaimed stage adaptation has become the highest grossing Broadway show in history, and still continues to sell out in its 14th year in London’s

West End. It also recently sold out a season in Manchester, having hit the road as the biggest touring production ever to tour the UK. In May 2014, 21 giant trucks will descend on the Liverpool venue carrying masks, puppets and more than 700 elaborate costumes representing 26 different types of animal. The show will also bring together 50 actors, singers

and dancers from 17 different countries, supported by a backstage team of over 100 people. Fiona Thomas, vice president of live entertainment for the Walt Disney company EMEA, says: “We continue to be thrilled by how much audiences enjoy The Lion King in London and we look forward to returning to the North West of England.”

SIGNATURE HOTEL OPENS

£12m refurbishment for Philharmonic

A movie themed hotel has brought a touch of Hollywood glamour to Liverpool, and is the latest in a line of new openings for the city. The Stanley Living Group launched its new £1.5 million Signature Hotel on Stanley Street, and confirmed the first six weeks were fully booked as guests rushed to snap up a stay in its film themed rooms. James Bond, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Sex and the City, The Hangover and Casino have all influenced suites in the 111-bed luxury hotel, which also has a members only bar, restaurant and nightclub. It opened days after Aparthotels Adagio unveiled its first British accommodation within the iconic former Lewis’ department store. The new ‘aparthotel’ has 126 fully equipped studios and onebedroom apartments for short leisurely stays for one to three nights right through to longer stays of 90 or more days. The city is also awaiting the arrival of the lavish Double Tree by Hilton hotel on Dale Street, which is expected to open in October.

Those with a thirst for live entertainment could see a further choice of concerts coming their way as a new performance space is being planned for the city. The current Liverpool Philharmonic Hall is hoping to celebrate 75 years since it opened its doors on Hope Street by getting to work on a £12 million refurbishment in 2014. Subject to approval and investment, the major project will improve the Grade II* listed

venue’s facilities for visitors, including the foyer, box office bars and catering, toilets and lift access to all levels of the building. An exciting new performance space will also boost Liverpool Philharmonic’s programme with small-scale concerts, learning events and activities. A full project at the hall, home to the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, is aimed for completion in 2015, tying in with the 175th anniversary of the founding of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic. ART Rankin exhibition

Cinematic encounters THE GREAT GATSBY Moulin Rouge director Baz Luhrmann will return to the big screen on May 17, with his adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby.

World renowned photographer Rankin may have worked with some of the world’s biggest magazines, brands and charities, but a forthcoming exhibition at Liverpool’s Walker Art Gallery is said to have been one of his most challenging projects yet. ALIVE: In The Face of Death will feature images of everyday people who know they are running out of time, as well as others who have pulled through against all odds, and will focus on celebrating life and diversity of character. Ahead of the exhibition, also set to be the subject of a landmark BBC Culture Show documentary, Rankin says: “Part of this exhibition has involved me taking photographs of people with terminal illness which has been quite a challenging process. “I’ve met some amazing people and I think each portrait brings out the vitality of each subject, their humour and unique qualities.” ALIVE: In The Face of Death will run from 17 May until 15 September as part of the LOOK/13: Liverpool International Photography Festival.

Music Liverpool Sound City Fresh from the successful release of their debut album Bad Blood, which went straight to the top of the charts, Bastille are the latest act to be added to this year’s Liverpool Sound City festival. Bringing their collection of triumphantly melancholic anthems, Bastille will join the already stellar line-up for this year’s three-day event, as it takes over more than 25 venues around the city from 2 to 4 May. As the festival unites over

360 artists to provide a snapshot of everything that is vital in music right now, other acts topping the bill include Noah and the Whale, The Walkmen, Dexys, Everything Everything, Enter Shikari, Thee Oh Sees, Darwin Deez, Delphic and Mount Kimbie. EVENT: Light Night Galleries, museums and venues are once again preparing a packed night of cultural events across the city centre, as the LightNight festival is set to return. With more than 50 organisations getting involved, a host of spectacular light projections, walking tours, live music shows, and workshops are being lined up, along with the re-opening of the Central Library and the launch of Look13, Liverpool’s biennial International Photography Festival.

It would be easy to both praise and criticise Bowie's first album in a decade In the melancholic Where Are We Now Bowie reflects about 1970's Berlin whilst the rest of The Next Day is definitely more upbeat, full of fizzing guitar riffs and saxophones. He also sings about subject matter which is definitely up to date, listen to The

Stars Are Out Tonight where he critiques celebrity culture. At seventeen songs long, some may say it's overly long but there's no dross on here and the tracks easily stand up alongside some of his older material. Bowie's last tour in 2004 was curtailed due to his heart attack, there have been no announcements for a new one as yet but if he does, it's sure to sell out.

CULTURE IN OTHER WORDS FESTIVAL Journalist, broadcaster and media personality Janet Street-Porter will be ranting about the rich, the public school elite, and why class still matters, as part of Liverpool’s In Other Words festival. She is the latest to take part in the Rebel Rants series, presented by Writing on the Wall, and

will be getting on her soap box at The Playhouse in the city centre on 3 May. Janet is just one of a host of top literary names set to appear at the In Other Words festival from 23 April to 19 May, as the city celebrates the reopening of its Central Library. Melvyn Bragg, Roger McGough and Brian Patten will also be appearing at a host of events. EVITA Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s hit musical, EVITA, will stop off at the Liverpool Empire in June, as part of a major national and international tour. Singer Marti Pellow will take on the coveted role of Che in the award-winning production, which also previously achieved Oscar success when it was made into a blockbuster film starring Madonna and Antonio Banderas. As it tells the story of Eva Peron - the wife of former Argentine dictator Juan Peron - and her journey from humble beginnings through to extraordinary wealth, power and iconic status; EVITA will bring its famous songs including Don’t Cry For Me Argentina to the city stage. My favourite with... THE TEA STREET BAND’S JAMES ALBERTINA They’re one of Liverpool’s most exciting new bands and are set for a summer of festivals starting with Liverpool Sound City in May. The Tea Street Band’s James Albertina took a break from recording the band’s debut album at The Motor Museum in Lark Lane to tell Your Move about his favourite things.

Favourite thing about Liverpool

The people. It's the people that make a city. It's the down to earth, funny nature of our city’s inhabitants that makes Liverpool great in my eyes.

Favourite musician

It’s a joint choice because for me they are the male/female equivalent of each other. Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush. Constant innovators and fantastic musicians, they encapsulate all the best points of British song writing whilst always creating fantastic music.

Favourite venue

In Liverpool it’s The Zanzibar. I've had so many good times playing and watching in there it couldn't be anywhere else!

Favourite film

Favourite moment in the band’s career

Favourite city

So far it would have to be playing Liverpool Sound City last year. We played in a car park converted by Red Bull into a massive stage to hundreds of people and the whole gig from start to finish was like a dream it was that good.

Favourite book

This is very hard indeed. It used to be The Lord of the Rings but it has to be all of the Dune series of novels by Frank Herbert, epic is not the word! The Glass Bead Game by Herman Hesse is also a personal favourite.

Has to be Blade Runner. Nothing else comes close, it is the best, end of.

Bit of a weird one for this but I've got to say Northampton (town). It's just so beautiful and idyllic, closely followed by Winchester. The cathedral is truly mind blowing there.

Favourite album

My favourite album would probably be Discovery by Daft Punk. There are other albums that I like for different things like; Aja by Steely Dan, Up by Peter Gabriel or Never for Ever by Kate Bush but Discovery was the sound track to my teens and for that reason it sticks out as my best album.
