NEW RENT TO BUY SCHEME TO HELP TENANTS PURCHASE HOMES A new Rent to Buy scheme announced by communities secretary, Eric Pickles has been welcomed by a number of Merseyside property experts. The £400 million government initiative will provide housing associations and other providers with low cost loans to build new rental properties, and landlords must then rent the homes at below-market rates, giving tenants the opportunity to save for a deposit while renting so they can eventually buy their home. Louise Clifford, manager of developer Atrium, which lets and manages properties on behalf of Liverpool Housing Trust, says: “With social housing in such high demand, opportunities to rent low cost housing are scarce and by offering people more flexible alternatives such as Rent to Buy we can help people who want to move on from private rent or social housing and at the same time reduce waiting lists for those most in need.” Eve Addison, marketing and landlord manager at X1 Lettings, adds: “The lower rental rates will provide the perfect opportunity to begin to climb the property ladder with the prospect of becoming a homeowner without having to save for an unfeasible

AGENT RAISES WITH CHARITY WALK Victoria Beilin of BE Property Services has raised £600 for the Alzheimer’s Society after taking part in the Memory Walk event at Aintree Racecourse. Participants were able to see inside the famous racetrack and were entertained with DJs, face painters, food vans and live music throughout the event. Fundraisers could choose to walk two kilometres or the more challenging 10-kilometre walk. Victoria says: “The walk took around two hours and it was a great event. We were pleased to support a charity that is so close to my heart, and to the business. There were tons of people there on the day and it was nice to be able to do something to support the Alzheimers Society.” The Aintree Memory Walk was one of several events across the country. charity night raising funds to build a primary school in Sierra Leone will take place in Liverpool this month, and is being supported by city estate agent Andrew Louis. The Bread of Life initiative is aiming to provide a new education facility in the country where 70% of the population is said to be living in poverty, and fundraisers behind the scheme are currently hoping to raise £12,000 for the cause. TALENT From becoming the youngest ever Perrier award winner to a stand-up career spanning well over two decades, it’s no wonder that funnyman Sean Hughes previously featured high in Channel 4’s ‘World’s 100 Greatest Comedians’ list. And he’s also secured success in acting, writing and broadcasting over the years. As he stopped off at Liverpool’s Unity Theatre to peform his latest comedy show ‘Penguins’, we caught up with Sean for a chat about his ideas, achievements and the varied projects he’s now got on the horizon.

INTERVIEW BY NATASHA YOUNG

What’s been the inspiration for your current tour and why have you called it Penguins? Well this is a second leg and we’ve already filmed the DVD. It’s called Penguins because in society, and this sounds very heavy but it is a comedy show, pretty much from the age of four you’re sent out to school like gracing penguins and told to get on with your life. Then just in general day-to-day things like New Year’s Eve we’re all told what to do, and I just didn’t like the whole emphasis that people put on sheep normally so that’s all it is to do with penguins really, it’s a metaphor. Have you been enjoying the tour? Yes because weirdly I started a new show this summer in London, which I’ll do next year, but I liked this show so much I wanted to do a second leg of it, and also I hadn’t been to Liverpool for ages. They’re always a really nice crowd but I always ended up playing Manchester instead. There’s a lot of observation in your comedy, including a focus on your own life. What do you look to for inspiration when you’re writing a stand-up show? I look at my own life but only if I feel that it’s every man’s life. I wouldn’t give you really boring details about my grandad, for instance, but I look at things we can all relate to as a crowd. In this one there’s a lot about how hard relationships are and there’s a lot about growing up and not being told the facts of life, and I believe that even now kids aren’t really told that at school. You’ve had a diverse career, ranging from stand-up comedy and acting in Coronation Street to writing, podcasts and other television work. Was it always your intention to try your hand at a range of things? Well you’ve put your finger on it, it is trying my hand at stuff. I wasn’t trained as an actor or anything. Sometimes it’s a little bonus and it’s also quite nice to work with other people as it is quite solitary on the road. I did a lot of radio which I

really love, and that’s why I adore doing the podcasts, which I don’t get paid for but I like to be, I guess like everyone else, in control of everything. The two things I love doing are the stand-up shows and the podcasts. Anything else is kind of out of my control. Coronation Street was pretty much to validate my life for my mum so that she’d be able to watch something that she liked that I’d do. Is there anything that you’d still like to have a go at given the chance? I’d love to do art exhibitions even though I can’t paint, but a lot of those people can’t paint! I’d like to do documentaries too but then the way television is going there doesn’t seem to be the money for that kind of stuff. At the moment we’re trying to get one off the ground but it’s just very hard work. You mentioned you like to work with other people. Are there any rising comedians or heroes of yours who you’d particularly like to work with? Whoever I work with on the podcasts I really have a lot of respect for. I personally choose them and I have a group of about 20 that I like. I don’t really do the circuit so I don’t socialise with comics and I don’t really see that many of them. There is definitely a comradeship between comics because we kind of understand each other so there’s that camaraderie straight away but the comedy has gone a bit skewiff now, like with stadium comedy - I just don’t understand that! You end up watching a screen really and it’s all way too expensive and so impersonal. So is your focus to bring it back to that old style of stand-up that you started with? I think with comedy it can work with a really nice venue of up to about 2,000 people but after that it becomes pointless. Because I don’t want to appear on panel shows it makes it harder for an audience to come and see me so luckily I try to get people my age and they’re the ones that I really like anyway. When I started you did stand-up because you wanted to do stand-up and it wasn’t a breakthrough into television but now there is a lot of comics who just do stand-up as a byproduct to get into television and I’m much more purist in the sense of I just like people. The only comics who I really like are the ones who tell me something.

On stage every night there’s a story so I’ll always have A-Z but I’ll always have audience participation in a sense because I think every night should be unique. Otherwise, for the comics who do one-liners and that’s it, it’s kind of like an office job because you know it works and you’re doing the same things so I like it to be different every night and I usually like to have a look at the local paper and see what’s happening throughout the area as well. What plans have you got lined up for once this Penguins tour comes to an end? I’m hopefully going to write a play. I’ve written a couple of plays before with another guy which we did in Edinburgh. We did two plays and they both won awards, but now there’s a play I just want to write about soup kitchens. Do you enjoy writing and being behind the scenes as much as you enjoy being centre of the stage? Oh I enjoy being centre of the stage but sometimes it’s not viable. Also, as you get older you’re not on stage to impress anyone but if it’s my work I like to see it done at its best so obviously I like to perform it if I can. You mention awards success, and you’ve also been recognised in ‘top 100 comedians’ lists. Is it important to you to be recognised alongside your comedy peers? Basically, all I want to do on stage is tell the truth so once I’ve done that I’m happy enough, and as long as I know it’s good then I’m happy, I don’t really need awards or anything like that. I don’t think they should make everything a competition, it should be just people trying to do their best.

Strictly star named patron of dance agency Sunetra Sarker

Liverpool-born Casualty and Strictly Come Dancing star, Sunetra Sarker has been named the first patron of local dance agency MDI as it celebrates its 21st anniversary. The Hope Street organisation, which is embarking on a season of celebrations for its milestone birthday, has welcomed the actress on board and is launching a campaign of support as she competes in the hit BBC dancing competition. Although a newcomer to ballroom and Latin dancing herself, MDI has been close to Sunetra’s heart as her mother Bishaka Sarker is a long-time collaborator. Sunetra says: “I am proud to have been asked to be a patron of MDI as a Scouser and a working mother and someone who sees the help dance can make to people’s lives through some of the fascinating work MDI is and has been doing to encourage dance and movement to all.” MDI’s artistic director Karen Gallagher MBE, who was also made an honorary fellow of Liverpool John Moores University this year, adds: “It’s been a wonderful 21 years so far and this news is just the icing on the cake, all at MDI wish Sunetra much luck on her Strictly journey and look forward to welcoming her into our dance family.” Meanwhile, MDI has also commissioned the city’s First Take film company to create a short film featuring stars from its history, including the likes of Matthew Bourne, Wendy Houstoun and Wayne McGregor. With a different selection every day and friendly service with a smile, this has quickly become a perfect lunchtime haunt for the city’s soup lovers.

10 Thomas Steers Way, L1 You’d be hard pushed to find a better location for a restaurant than Bill’s spot on Thomas Steers Way. A few minutes walk from the stunning waterfront and Albert Dock and just yards from the bustling shops of Liverpool ONE, the city’s brand new eatery is certainly perfectly positioned to attract passing custom. Indeed when my husband and I went along to review the restaurant on a busy Saturday afternoon – with our one year old son in tow – there was a steady stream of shoppers and tourists perusing the menu at the entrance before venturing inside. The Liverpool venue is the latest branch of the popular chain to open, with over 40 already in operation across the UK – including 17 in London – and has taken over the spot previously occupied by the now defunct Café Sports England brand. The new owners have completely transformed the restaurant – gone are the scores of TV screens and long bar and in their place an eclectic, mis-matched décor and an altogether more

inviting feel. To start with I ordered the mini-Cumberland sausages with honey and grain mustard while my husband opted for the ‘chicken in a jar’ – a generous serving of rich and creamy chicken liver parfait with chutney and several slices of toasted sourdough. The sausages were cooked to perfection and the mustard was the perfect accompaniment but the portion could easily have served two or three people as a starter. For my main course I opted for the pan-fried hake which came with a chunky tomato, avocado and caper salsa and a crispy spring onion and parsley potato rosti. The salsa provided a fresh and tangy flavour for the simple but tasty fish while the rosti was easily the best part of the dish – crisp on the outside and delicately flavoured. My husband’s choice of the hamburger with Monterey Jack cheese, streaky bacon and skinny fries was a brave one, given he had polished off the last of the sausages and was feeling pretty full before the waitress

had even taken the plates from the starters. However, he had little trouble finishing the succulent beef and light and crispy fries. Though I’m not much of a fan of desserts, on the recommendation of our waitress we felt compelled to try the Eton Mess. And I’m glad we did - the crispy, chewy crushed meringue with mascarpone and lashings of whipped cream was perfectly complimented by sweet fresh strawberries and a strawberry coulis. Bill’s is clearly aiming to be all things to all people – serving breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as cocktails and coffee – and it appears to be working. When we visited the restaurant was heaving with families, girls out on the town and couples enjoying a coffee break while shopping. And it’s not hard to see why it’s proving so popular. The staff were friendly and accommodating, particularly when it came to my rather raucous toddler, the atmosphere relaxed and the food filling and delicious. What more could you ask for?

FUN PALACE AT THE EVERYMAN

T

he Everyman theatre opened its doors to the community for a day of fun and activities to mark what would have been the 100th birthday of theatre director Joan Littlewood, as part of a series of free Fun Palaces events across the country. To celebrate the occasion the Sense of Sound acapella choir performed at the iconic venue, visitors took part in dance, singing and drumming workshops and also participated in science-themed experiments in a ‘laboratory bar’. Meanwhile, guests were invited to explore the inner sanctum of the theatre as members of the Bright Phoenix company performed at the venue, allowing them to see behind the scenes of a stage show. Other activities included culture-themed playing card games, crafts, workshops, face painting and giant puppets.
