This young Friesian horse enjoys the cold and snow since its ancestors hailed from the Netherlands, but you can be warm and comfortable while on a “Vet Voyage” by “Sailing Away to Veterinary Excellence” during the MVMA’s 133rd Annual Convention January 30-February 2 in Columbia, Mo.

This year’s meeting will feature something for the full staff with a variety of labs, as well as, a technician track, wellbeing discussions, and low-cost rabies titer testing thanks to MU-

Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Lab. In addition to continuing education, the convention will celebrate the Foundation’s 50th Anniversary along with its Silent & Live Auction

and $10,000 drawing. It also offers a

trade show and Student/ Vet

From the President-Elect

Hello everyone! I want to thank all Missouri veterinarians for granting me the opportunity to serve this great organization. My involvement with the MVMA began at the annual convention over 35 years ago. Initially I just attended the annual conference and intermittently went to our WCVMA district meetings. I gradually increased my involvement through committee meetings and that has opened my eyes to the great work MVMA does for its members. I would urge every member to just start somewhere. You will quickly see how important this organization is to all Missouri veterinarians. Many of you throughout the veterinary world have had trouble over the past few years finding veterinarians for hire. I am hopeful this is just another swing that will right itself within the next year or two. There are many new veterinary schools that have recently been accredited by the AVMA, many more that are seeking accreditation, and a few others that are contemplating opening another veterinary school. According to

the AVMA website, there are currently 32 accredited Veterinary Schools in the US, 5 Canadian schools, and an additional 18 throughout the rest of the world. There are 8 proposed Veterinary schools currently in the process of seeking accreditation in the US, including Puerto Rico, and another 3 that are considering establishing a Veterinary School. So, it is possible that we could have as many as 48 Veterinary schools in the US and Canada within the next 5 years. Currently student enrollment is increasing at a rate of ~2.7%/year. Hopefully, the new schools will increase that rate to help alleviate the current demand.

Dr. Srinand “Sri” Sreevatsan was appointed as the new Dean of the MU College of Veterinary Medicine” as of August 1, 2024. Dean Sri has many accomplishments and has served in leadership positions at Michigan State and the University of Minnesota. He has a particular interest in food animal microbiology. He has held leadership roles in the Michigan Veterinary Medical Association and the Michigan Alliance for Animal Agriculture. I wish Dean Sri a long and successful tenure as Dean of the MU College of Veterinary Medicine.

The 2025 MVMA Annual Convention, will be held January 30 – February 2 at the Holiday Executive Center in Columbia with a Theme of “Vet Voyage: Sailing the Seas of Veterinary Excellence”. The annual convention provides an opportunity to meet new friends and catch up with old friends. Dr. Eleanor Green, former faculty member at MU in Equine Internal Medicine will present the Keynote Address “Convergence of Frontiers in Veterinary and Human Healthcare: Future, Soon, and Now”. She will present again Saturday afternoon on “Adaptability: The New Core Competency (Adapt or Die)”. The convention planning committee has again put together a great program that has something for everyone whether it is to obtain precious CE hours through lectures or laboratories, attend the evening events, committee meetings, and awards ceremonies, or just sit around talking with friends. Please plan to attend.

Pet Oxygen Masks Kits

Veterinarians & Fire Departments

Working Together for Pets

The Pet Oxygen Mask Project was an initiative of the Missouri Veterinary Medical Association (MVMA) Animal Welfare Committee in cooperation with the MVMA Emergency Management & Public Health Committee and the MVMA Missouri Volunteer Veterinary Corps. It was started for the sole purpose of equipping all Missouri fire trucks with pet oxygen masks.

Equipping fire trucks with pet oxygen masks will give firefighters the proper equipment they would need when trying to revive a pet that has suffered from smoke inhalation. According to the 2022 American Pet Products Association, 70% of U.S. households own a pet. In the event of a house fire or other emergency, pets are often rescued and outfitting fire trucks with these pet oxygen masks will help support the local first responders and firefighters.

The pet oxygen masks are specifically designed for animals and each kit comes with three different size masks that can be used on any size dog or cat, as well as ferrets, guinea pigs, birds, and more. The kits also include three oxygen air tubes, a carry bag, instruction sheet and DVD training, a leash, animal incident report forms, pet rescue notice forms, and decals. These masks enable unrestricted inhalation and exhalation of oxygen and can help firemen revive animals that have been exposed to the dangerous toxic fumes. Many veterinary clinics have partnered with their local fire departments to donate pet oxygen kits.

These kits can be purchased directly from WAG’N O2 FUR LIFE and can be viewed online at https://www. petoxygenmasks.org/ or by partnering with your local veterinarian(s) to help equip the fire trucks in the state of Missouri. Each kit costs approximately $92-$105 based on quantity.

Hill’s Pet Nutrition, a leading partner in animal welfare, today released new findings from the 2024 Hill’s Pet Nutrition State of Shelter Pet Adoption Report. For the fourth year in a row, animal shelters across the country are facing an over-capacity crisis. According to Shelter Animals Count, 6.5 million cats and dogs entered shelters and rescues in 2023 alone, and populations increased by 900,000 animals since January 2021.

“Collaboration and a community-centric approach are crucial to finding impactful ways to address pet homelessness and overcapacity issues in animal shelters,” said Dr. Karen Shenoy, US Chief Veterinary Officer at Hill’s Pet Nutrition. One way we do that is by supplying shelters with quality nutrition to help shelter pets be healthy, happy and more adoptable. Since 2002, the Hill’s Food, Shelter & Love program has provided more than $300 million worth of dog and cat nutrition to more than 1,000 animal shelters.”

We are a mixed animal practice group located in central Missouri. Our mixed animal practice is in a small town in the heart of wine country, along the Missouri River. Hermann offers all the great things about a small community, plus the social perks of several wineries and proximity to St. Louis and Columbia. It is also a great place to raise a family with good public and private school options.

Our second clinic is a small animal practice which opened in January 2025. We’ve had a warm welcome into the community and our practice is growing rapidly. Additionally, we operate a mobile veterinary practice. Our veterinarians rotate between the two clinics, but that is not a requirement if it isn’t the right fit for you.

Our clinics employ large and small animal assistants and technicians. Our full-time veterinarians enjoy a four-day work week with rotating emergency duty and Saturday schedule. Our practice is split about evenly between large and small animal patients, with the bulk of our large animal work being comprised of beef cow/calf. We also see varying amounts of dairy, small ruminants, and horses.

Our clinics have a laid-back atmosphere, but we take our clients’ satisfaction and patients’ healthcare seriously. A collaborative team approach is encouraged at our clinic which fosters a great setting to practice high quality medicine. Asking for a second opinion, additional ideas, or a back-up physical exam is welcomed. We are a privately owned practice, and your family is important to us. Most days, you will find at least one child spending some after-school-time or a lunch break at our clinic. If you are ready to enjoy your career and practice medicine for the benefit of your patients while still having flexibility and time to enjoy your personal life, we may just be the place you are looking for. It is important to us that we create a work environment that allows our veterinarians to be challenged, the opportunity to do the good that drew you to being a veterinarian and enjoy a life-long career.

Due to growth and one of our very valued veterinarians moving home, we are hiring 2 FTE veterinarians. Our ideal candidate is a practitioner who enjoys practicing large and small animal medicine. Excellent communication and people skills are required. If you are looking to join a rural mixed animal practice and become a valued member of a team, please contact us. With the addition of our second clinic, we are also open to a small animal

exclusive veterinarian. We are also open to the potential of hiring part-time.

If you feel like you would be a good fit for our practice, please email Kulhorn@gmail.com or call 573-486-2515. We would love to have you spend time with us and explore the option of becoming a future member of our veterinary team.
