Is your child over 3 years old?

Is your child less than 5 years old?

Choosing the right swim lesson is the first step in your child's aquatic education. It is important to select lessons that provide equal amounts of new challenges and old favorites.

1: Use the flow chart below to identify the swim level that best matches your child's swimming skill set.

2: On the next page, select the best day and time that work for your busy schedule.

Can your child go underwater independently and back float?

Can your child back float independently and front crawl 10 yards independently?

Does your child know all of the basic strokes and can they perform them with little help? (front crawl, backstroke, breast stroke, side stroke, dolphin kick)

Can your child perform a basic dive off the side of the pool and perform basic strokes independently?

Unless otherwise indicated, all swim lesson sessions include eight, 40-minute classes. M-TH sessions meet four times a week for two weeks, while TU/TH sessions meet twice a week for four weeks.

SPLASH AND LEARN

Progress Park Recreation Center

Ages: 6 Months+*

Join us for our 40-minute staff training, where children and swim instructors can learn together! Children will have a chance to try out our swim-lesson program and instructors will get a chance to prepare for our program in the best way possible — through real teaching experience. When registering, parents will be asked to choose a level based on their child's skills. *Parent participation is required with children between 6-35 months.

Group Swim Lessons

Multiple Locations

Ages: 6 Months+

Group swim lessons are a great way for your child to learn with the support of peers in a fun group environment. Session dates and times are listed below followed by the descriptions of the classes offered.

Swim Levels

JELLYFISH*

Ages: Toddler (6-35 Months)

This level intends to develop a child’s comfort in and around water and prepare them for future instruction without a parent. Skills to be mastered with assistance: blowing bubbles, kicking, floating on back with parent support, swimming motions with parent support. Parent must accompany the child in the pool. (Min 4/Max 10)

*No Jellyfish classes offered during sessions at 6:50P

SEA TURTLE

Ages: Preschool (Ages 3-4)

This level intends to develop a child’s comfort in and around water. Skills to be mastered: front and back kick with instructor support, submerge head, feet-first jump, entering and exiting pool without assistance. (Min 3/Max 5)

STINGRAY

Ages: Level 1 (Ages 5+)

This beginner level intends to develop a child’s comfort in and around water. Skills to be mastered: front and back kick with instructor support, feet-first jump, submerge head, entering and exiting pool without assistance and back float with instructor support. (Min 3/Max 6)

MARLIN Ages: Level 2 (Ages 5+)

This level is for those who are comfortable in the water and are ready to learn more independent swimming. Skills to be mastered: submerge head and face, front and back kick without support, basic front and back crawl. (Min 3/Max 6)

WALRUS Ages: Level 3 (Ages 5+)

This level will further develop strokes and start to build basic technique and endurance. Skills to be mastered: submerge head and face without hesitation, front crawl with rhythmic breathing, basic front and back crawl. This class may spend time in water 12-13 feet deep. (Min 3/Max 6)

DOLPHIN Ages: Level 4 (Ages 5+)

This level intends to perfect front stroke, backstroke and elementary backstroke. Skills to be mastered: treading water for 60 seconds and basic performance of breaststroke and sidestroke. This class spends time in water 12-13 feet deep. (Min 3/Max 8)

SHARK Ages: Level 5 (Ages 5+)

*The Jellyfish level is not offered in the 6:50P time slot.

The longest journey swimming is 3273.38 miles by Martin Strel (Slovenia) who swam the entire length of the Amazon River, Peru/Brazil, from Feb. 1 to April 8, 2007. (www.guinessworldrecords.com)

Did You Know?

Get active. Stay active.

This level is the highest we have and focuses almost entirely on technique and preparation for swim team or fitness swimming. Students in this level have learned and put together all strokes but need further assistance in perfecting them and swimming more efficiently. Skills to be mastered: advancement in basic stroke skill, tread water for two minutes without using hands, retrieve brick from bottom of pool, flip turns, basic butterfly stroke, starts and entries. (Min 3/Max 8)

Scuba

Seal Team Scuba Camp

Progress Park Recreation Center Ages: 8-14

Y-kiki Divers and Wentzville Parks and Recreation are pleased to offer the PADI Seal Team Scuba Camp! This three-hour, week-long camp is a pool-only, activity-filled introduction to the exciting world of scuba diving under the supervision of certified scuba instructors. Campers will be briefed each day, don scuba gear and will complete a new “AquaMission” to learn new scuba skills and practice neutral buoyancy with a game or activity. A PADI Seal Team Crew-Pak (includes AquaMission Activity Book and AquaMission Logbook) is provided to each participant. All equipment is included. At the end of the program, participants will receive a PADI Seal Team member card and wall certificate. (Min 4/Max 12)
