Choosing the right skate level is the first step in your child's ice education. It is important to select a level that provides equal amounts of new challenges and old favorites. Use the flow chart below to identify the skate level that best matches your child's skating skill set.

LEARN-TO-SKATE

Wentzville Ice Arena

Ages: 3+

This class will build confidence on and off the ice and teach balance, coordination and the fundamentals of skating. Classes are held Thursdays at 4:50P or 5:20P and Saturdays at 10:20A or 11A, depending on age. Registration includes skate rental and a punch card for admission to eight public skate sessions. This program is 30 minutes in length.

SNOWFLAKE

Snowflake 1

Ages: 3-6

This class teaches the basics of skating including how to fall down and get up off and on the ice as well as how to march forward. (Min 4/Max 15)

Snowflake 2

Snowflake 2 teaches building block skating skills forward and backward as well as how to glide forward and builds confidence. (Min 2/Max 10)

Snowflake 3

Snowflake 3 students will get more involved in skating forward and backward and begin edge work of the skate blades with an introduction to stopping. (Min 2/Max 10)

Snowflake 4

Snowflake 4 will work on more advanced edge work and complete learning to stop. This class must be passed before joining the Learn-to-Play Hockey program. (Min 2/Max 10)

Youth Hockey League

Wentzville Ice Arena

Ages: 6-10

Our Youth Hockey League is for players in the 8U and 10U divisions who are either new to hockey or are looking for a recreational team. This league will offer a total of 12 games during the eight-week session. Games will consist of two games played during the one-hour time period. Games will be played between 5:30-7:30P. The registration fee will include a team jersey. Players must wear full protective equipment. No games MAY 29. (Min 72/Max 90)

Power Skating And Drills

Ages: 7-12

This one-hour class is geared toward skaters who are wanting to work on their power skating skills and endurance on ice. Class will incorporate various drills to work on gaining power while performing various skills. Class will also work on strengthening various hockey drills. Skate rental included with registration. (Min 10/Max 30)

LEARN-TO-PLAY HOCKEY

Ages: 5-14

These classes are designed to teach basic hockey skills (stick handling, shooting, skating and passing). In order to enroll in this class, your player must know how to skate backward, crossover, stop without running into the boards, skate from one side of the rink to the other and be able to turn in both directions — all without falling. Skaters will be broken into groups on the first day based on age, size and skill level. Registration includes a jersey and a punch card for eight free public skate or Stick ‘N’ Puck session. Equipment fitting will be on AUG 31 from 5-7P. (Min 10/Max 30)

BEGINNER Ages: 7+

Beginner 1

This is the starter class for skaters who are 7 years and older who have not skated before. Students will learn to glide and do basic movements forward and backward. If you have completed Snowflake 1-4, skip this class. (Min 5/Max 20)

Beginner 2

This class covers basic forward and backward skating skills, including forward stroking, forward crossovers in both directions and one foot snow plow stops. (Min 2/Max 10)

Beginner 3

This class covers basic forward and backward skating skills, turning techniques and use of the edges on your skate blades. T-stops are also learned in this class. (Min 2/Max 10)

Beginner 4

This class covers the basics of freestyle skating, including two foot spins, beginning jump fundamentals and hockey stops. (Min 2/Max 5)

LEARN-TO-SKATE HOCKEY

Ages: 4-10

Does your child dream of playing hockey competitively? It all starts here at our Learn-to-Skate Classes. These classes will teach you the basics of skating geared to children who want to play hockey. Registration includes a jersey and a punch card for a free public session or Stick ‘N’ Puck. Equipment fitting will be on AUG 31 from 5-7P.

Level 1

Learn the basics from falling and recovery to a basic hockey stance. Your skater will also learn how to stand and march on their own without assistance. (Min 10/Max 25)

Level 2

Skaters who can stand and move on their own are ready for this level. Here, they will learn basic forward-skating strides, stopping (snow plow) and be introduced to backward skating. (Min 5/Max 20)

Level 3

Skaters will learn how to complete crossover turns (forward and backward) and stopping. Edge work for turning will also be covered more in depth. (Min 5/Max 20)

Figure skating derives its name from the patterns (or figures) skaters make on the ice, an element that was a major part of the sport until recently. (www.britannica.com)
