Bethlehem is a city of givers and we’re showing off just how much support there is!

THE SPIRIT OF THE SEASON We all know Bethlehem is the Christmas City, and with that comes all the trimmings one would expect: the white lights in the trees, the holiday music, the sounds of the horse and carriage clopping down the street. It’s pretty spectacular. People travel from all around to come see the Star of Bethlehem and our humble Moravian town all decked out for the season. On the Westside you can drive around the tree-lined neighborhoods and see the Christmas lights and decorations. The Northside has the quaint Christmas City Village, A Christmas Carol Musical at the Ice House and, of course, the city’s tree lighting ceremony. On the Southside you can stroll through Christkindlmarkt and go see the Christmas City Follies at Touchstone Theatre. On the Eastside you can enjoy the Holiday Pops concert at Freedom High School and then find a fresh Christmas tree at Pharo Garden Centre. Locals, however, know a secret: Bethlehem shines all year long. The spirit of living and loving local is alive and well in this o’ little town and everyone seems to gain. By shopping at the independent boutique down the street, you’re helping the cause. By giving to your town’s food bank, you’re helping your neighbor. By donating to the women’s shelter around the corner, you could be helping your friend. By choosing local, you’re helping yourself and preserving the city we love. On our front cover you’ll see the City of Bethlehem map. In collaboration with Freebridge Design Co. and Homebase Skateshop, we are pleased to bring this unique design to Bethlehem’s residents. We hope that through this image you can find that special place here that speaks to you—not only during the holidays, but all year long. Let’s keep shining, Bethlehem, and keep the local love bright.

DESIGN SERVICES LINOLEUM BLOCK PRINTS SCREENPRINTED APPAREL Danny Finocchio (Freebridge Design Co.) & Andy Po (Homebase Skateshop) in front of the Bethlehem skyline.

danny finocchio had heard a lot about andy po’s Homebase

Skateshop through social media, so last year he stopped by to check them out. “I walked in wearing an early version of my City of Easton tee,” Danny says. “Andy and I got talking about how I designed the shirt, and struck up a friendship from that.” That tee with a stylized map of Easton was Danny’s first product from his Freebridge Design Co. (FDCo), a venture started with his brother last year as a platform to create clothing, graphics, and other products 4 freebridgedesignco.com

representing Lehigh Valley and Pennsylvania culture. FDCo worked with Homebase earlier this year to develop branding, identity, and graphics focusing on the launch of Homebase Easton. Now, they’re working together on a Holiday Capsule Collection based around FDCo’s City of Bethlehem illustration. Previously, FDCo had designed graphics for, and in collaboration with, Homebase that were featured across a variety of products such as tees, tote bags, and pins. Now

they’re working together to create similar products, including skateboards, featuring FDCo’s City of Bethlehem illustration. Danny’s focus on Bethlehem grew out of his experience living there during the summers of 2007 through 2009, when he worked at Lehigh University. “I love Bethlehem. During my time there I fell in love with the art, architecture, and history of the city.” See Danny’s designs featured on the covers and page 5 of this issue of Fig Bethlehem. Bekah Rusnock, creator of IGbethlehem

AU T H E N T I C : B E KAH R U S N OCK when her friend’s puppy ran off

right before a thunderstorm was about to hit, Bekah Rusnock knew what to do— log on to her wildly popular Instagram account, IGbethlehem. “I posted a photo of Reilly along with my friend’s phone number,” Bekah says. Some of Bekah’s more than 11,000 Instagram followers immediately reposted Reilly’s picture and information to Twitter and Facebook. They also left scores of supportive comments on the Instagram post, which meant the world to Reilly’s owner. “It felt like the whole city was looking for Reilly,” Bekah says. 6 figbethlehem.com

“Within an hour, Reilly was back home, safe and sound, wrapped in a blanket on the couch.” Bekah is an ebullient, outgoing Lehigh Valley native who majored in journalism and learned the rudiments of photography from reporters at The Bethlehem Press and other local newspapers. As someone whose creative generosity needs an outlet, she decided to create the “(Un)official” Instagram account of Bethlehem because she felt it was the quintessential hometown everyone could relate to. Bekah also wanted an “organic” following for her account, so she didn’t utilize the

typical software that would easily increase traffic. Instead, she combines her knack for capturing the essence of her subjects with frequent, genuine interaction with her followers. “I dig up facts for pictures that people might not know about,” Bekah says. That journalistic penchant for getting important, relatable details, along with Bekah’s sociable personality, has enabled IGbethlehem to help create the city’s hometown feel as much as capture it. Check out her account on Instagram and follow IGbethlehem.

At Fig, we believe in the power of a community that works together to identify needs and find solutions—one that creates community connections and is passionate about helping its neighbors.

We believe in the mission of Lehigh Valley Girls Rock— our 2015 Social Mission Partner. Please consider giving to them with your dollars and your time this year.

lehigh valley girls rock is a nonprofit

organization that seeks to empower girls and foster their self-esteem with creative expression through music and the arts. Lehigh Valley Girls Rock is made up of musicians (Kelsi and Felicia make up local band Moonstruck), designers, artists, teachers, volunteers, and other women of the Lehigh Valley who are passionate about the mission and the organization. Focusing on inclusivity and affordability, all girls are encouraged to participate in the events and reap the benefits. Each summer they host a one-week long camp for girls ages 10-17 where they can learn to play an instrument, form a band, write an original song, and perform in concert. Additionally, different speakers offer workshops on art, stage presence, positive body image, and even yoga classes. “We nurture an inclusive community for all girls and women by promoting collaboration, developing positive relationships, and encouraging effective communication. We use creative expression and Rock to strengthen each girl’s inner voice and help her become the confident and self-aware person that she aspires to be,” Kelsi says. Be on the lookout for LV Ladyfest (an annual fundraiser show) and the second annual LV Ladies Rock Camp, which will both be happening in spring of 2016. Volunteer positions and leadership opportunities are available. Apply at lvgirlsrock.org. 16 figbethlehem.com

Amy Kocis, Director of Operations at the Lehigh Valley Animal Food Bank

G IV IN G BAC K : L EHI G H VA L L EY A N I M A L FO O D BA N K tough economic times call for

tough decisions, forcing some to choose between feeding their family and feeding their animal companions. Fortunately, the Animal Food Bank of the Lehigh Valley is there to help. Founded in 2005, the all-volunteer staff of AFBLV currently serves more than 6,000 registered animals throughout the Lehigh Valley and beyond. “As long as they come to us,” Executive Director Amy Kocis says, “we’ll serve them.” By providing families with the food, the AFBLV helps them keep 20 figbethlehem.com

their animals versus relinquishing them to the already overburdened shelter and rescue systems. In addition to food, they have a diverse collection of collars, leashes, bowls, brushes, toys, and even winter coats. And they don’t just cater to dogs and cats, they also have food and supplies for what they call “pocket pets” like rabbits, hamsters, fish, turtles, and birds. And since many families can’t afford food for their animals, they also can’t afford medical care, so the AFBLV works closely with No Kill Lehigh Valley to provide low-cost services for

vaccines, spaying and neutering, and life-saving surgeries. As the chill of winter approaches and the goodwill of the holidays begins to stir, it’s important to remember that, for many people, their animals are also family members. No one knows this better than Amy Kocis. “I’ve always done rescue work,” she says. “I love helping animals stay where they’re supposed to be.” Please support Amy helping animals stay with their families with a donation of food or supplies at afblv.com.

Christkindlmarkt! The little ones love to get creative at the scarf-painting stall after they visit Santa. My husband and I love to stroll the aisles, sipping hot chocolate and nibbling on sweet eats. I think what I love most about it is the platform it creates for local artists— I never leave empty-handed. I can’t imagine the holidays without it!

Cookies, the classic kind. I can never resist buying a tin when I come to Bethlehem during Christmastime and eating a few during the drive home. Although I bake a lot and most of what we eat, there are certain baked goods that just don’t turn out the same way homemade. These wafer-thin, crisp and addictive cookies are one of the rare exceptions.

L a u r e l : Josh and I make

cookies and deliver them to businesses throughout Bethlehem to thank them for bringing us smiles and cheer all year long. We also love to watch the snow fall while sitting at The Hotel Bethlehem. It is magical!

To n i : I love to get

coffee and walk around downtown Bethlehem taking in all the holiday spirit, admiring the decorated windows and beautiful holiday decorations throughout the city.

R e n e e : Bethlehem

during a snowfall is one of the most magical places to be. Sitting in a cozy bar or restaurant or walking the decorated streets gives me a feeling of being inside a Charles Dickens story!

A PRISTINE

IN THE COUNTRY bell gate farm has been around a long time. Built in

1780, its pastoral environs are ideal for just about any kind of celebration or gathering you can imagine. Stephanie Stevens, whose family purchased the farm in 1963, has just completed a revitalization of the estate that would make her parents proud. When they were first married, Stephanie’s father was a successful lawyer with a substantial debt load, but her mother was a frugal nurse who grew up in the Pennsylvania coal region. Together they transformed Bell Gate Farm into a tranquil retreat for family, friends, and associates. Sadly, Stephanie’s parents both passed away recently. “I was very close to my parents,” she says, “and I felt untethered when I lost them.” But Stephanie had an epiphany during her mother’s funeral that would honor both their lives and her relationship with them—convert the farmhouse, barn, and guesthouse into a soup-to-nuts events venue to meet every budget.

Stephanie Stevens, owner

In addition to weddings, parties, and corporate meetings, Stephanie wants Bell Gate Farm to be a true community, including outdoor movie nights, a Santa’s Village complete with sleigh rides, and eventually even a General Store. It would be a combination of the Saucon Valley Promenade and Peddler’s Village, yet more intimate. “Bell Gate Farm is a labor of love and legacy,” Stephanie says, “and at the end of the day that’s what’s most important.” Learn more at bellgatefarm.com.

winter—celebrate the season with warmth and color at the michener art museum in doylestown, pa.

Lisa Tremper Hanover, Director & CEO, in Pattern Pieces exhibition. Work by Alan Goldstein (b. 1938), A Forest of Glass, 2011, oil and wax on paper mounted on Styrene, hung by cable, 12 x 16 footprint of trees. Courtesy of the artist.

The Michener is one of only two museums in the U.S. to host Blanket Statements: New Quilts by Kaffe Fassett and Historical Quilts from the Collection of the Quilt Museum and Gallery, York, UK. This stellar exhibition, which runs through February 21, 2016, features 15 new quilts designed by the internationally renowned textile artist Kaffe Fassett, created in response to 15 historical quilts, dating from 1780 to 1949, that he selected from the collection of the Quilt Museum and Gallery, York, UK. The complementary exhibition, Pattern Pieces: Can You Make a Quilt Out of Wood?, examines pattern, shape, and color in contemporary art as it relates to quilts and their long history as both utilitarian and artistic objects. Spanning time and media, Pattern Pieces features work by James A. Michener, Virgil Marti, Elizabeth Osborne, Laura Petrovich-Cheney, and Alan Goldstein. This winter, in addition to the quilt-themed exhibitions, the Michener Art Museum invites visitors to view Paul Grand: Beyond the Surface (though February 7, 2016), featuring work by the noted photographer whose images focus on rich color, jarring contrasts, architectural renderings, and the play of textures, light, and shadow, and Linden Frederick: Roadside Tales (through March 13, 2016), showcasing paintings by an artist whose renderings of small towns with empty main streets and tiny suburban houses roll by like frames in a movie, calling to mind vaguely familiar images we have absorbed from other drives, other places. Impactful, engaging exhibitions like these—along with the Michener Art Museum’s permanent collection of more than 4,000 objects that includes stunning early 20th-century Pennsylvania Impressionist paintings—annually attract more than 135,000 visitors from around the world. Adding inspiring, invigorating layers to the Michener visitor experience are lectures, artist conversations, gallery talks, artist studio tours, jazz performances, dance performances, family-themed activities, art classes, and other events offered year-round. We hope you will join us this winter (and beyond) to enjoy the compelling exhibitions, the rousing programs, and the inviting space of the Michener Art Museum. We’ll keep your mind and spirit warm!
