make the city your creative canvas

Over the past decade, the City of Lancaster has become both muse and sanctuary to artists and artisans, makers and innovators. The City is a canvas and each inhabitant and visitor has an opportunity to make their own unique mark. Creatives of every discipline have found an amplified existence in the City where doing what you love can become your livelihood. Artists find freedom in realizing how sharing their passion invigorates the community around them, forever changing the cityscape. Creative migration from large cities to smaller communities like ours is happening all over the country. More than a decade ago, I was one of those creative migrants—bringing some of New York City back to a welcoming community. With cultural migration, we see a shift—one of expanded views and a myriad of fresh creative thought. Art is now everywhere. From the stage to the storefront, from the design table to the dinner table, bringing life and dimension to our streets, excitement to our palates, and inspiration to our souls. It brings people out and puts them on the sidewalks, prompting dialogue with friends and building a foundation for important creative conversation. Last month, Fig Industries was fortunate to be invited to the Cities for Tomorrow conference hosted by The New York Times where urban leaders from all over the country were present, learning from one another what leads a city to flourish. During the conference, Harvard Economist Edward Glaeser said “social connections are the most important thing for humanity.” Walk through the streets of Downtown Lancaster and you’ll know exactly what he means. The City of Lancaster is alive with inspiring conversations and social engagement. So, get up, get Downtown, and experience our creative City.

FRESH FACE:

evan scudner is the other side of the

old adage, missing the forest for the trees. “I like big picture things. I think five years out on a daily basis.” This is what drew him to film, the ability to tell stories visually, and bring the forest to an audience. With 9,900 square feet of space combining multiple sound stages, an audio recording suite, and full production company on site, Evan describes Triode Media Group as a “digital media factory,” designed to meet the needs of local businesses in a collaborative environment. The facility’s stunning main stage features 100 feet of permanent cyclorama, allowing

for shots with an infinite white background at up to 70 feet. It is one of the largest on the East Coast. Triode is pioneering a new model for commercial film production, based on live broadcast technology and infrastructure. The traditional model is expensive and slow; theirs allows for more efficient workflow. But story always comes first. “Being a factory doesn’t mean that you can’t be creative or artistic, or that they are cookie-cutter videos—they’re not.” The streamlined production simply allows for faster turnaround. “In many cases, the client is having a draft of the piece on the same day.”

Evan hopes this model will open up new possibilities of what can be done, and put the local production industry on the map. “This could be a catalyst for bringing more film production to Lancaster, which has such a great print history. I think this is the right place, time, and workforce to make the City of Lancaster a name in film production.” In the meantime, Triode Media Group is poised to meet any video demands you can throw at them. “We are taking the leap, and really excited about the future.” Learn more at triode.tv.

the future of architecture is collaborative. For 15 years we’ve thoughtfully pursued an ambitious path to simplify and unify the design-build process and unleash the possibilities of what architecture can achieve. We’re looking toward the future—and we’re bringing architecture back to the conversation about how to shape a community for good. The launch of our newest company, RETRO Development, is our effort to do just that. Our $2 million self-

developed property showcases the work of TONO Group and our family of businesses: RETRO Development, TONO Architects, PROTO Construction, and Interiors by DECO. We now have the capability to deliver a seamless, streamlined design-build process from start to finish. As mindful placemakers, we chose urban infill as a sustainable option for our offices and invited the restaurant LUCA to join our building— representing a new form of public amenity that encourages connection

with neighbors and functions as a gathering space. Architecture is public art on the largest scale possible. It provides creative solutions to problems we face; it helps us think, act, and feel in new ways. No matter where your path leads, take a moment to remember that a developer, an architect, a builder, and a designer were there before you. Get to know the makers of your favorite places! Leeann & Taylor Mason Owners

FRESH FACE:

inspired by the conviviality of the Italian table, LUCA brings a casual and rustic new dining experience to Lancaster. Taylor and Leeann Mason share a deep love for the ‘Old Country’ where the union of food, drink, and community still remain the highest pleasure of life. Their vision was to create a place where their community could gather and enjoy simple meals and escape the rigors of daily life, if just for a bit. The menu at LUCA is an adventure in food anthropology—effortlessly combining regional Italian dishes with the agriculturally-rich heritage of Lancaster County. “We buy the best possible

products from the region and treat them simply to bring out their inherent beauty.” The wood-burning hearth and handmade Italian wood-oven are the centerpieces of LUCA’s rustic kitchen and lend depth and complexity to the cooking. The current menu exudes the traditions of summertime in the southern regions of Italy. Fresh tomatoes, peppers, squash, seafood, and of course, great pizzas—all cooked over a wood fire take the spotlight. As the weather cools, the menu will evolve up the country into classic wine regions like Tuscany and Umbria. Plates will entice patrons with more earthy flavors, gamemeats, and mushrooms cooked to rustic

10 436 west james street 717.553.5770 lucalancaster.com

perfection over an open fire. By winter, Luca diners will travel all the way up to the Northern end of Italy for a warm, rich, comforting food experience that trades olive oils for butter and incorporates aged cheeses for a soulful and primal dining experience. While decidedly chic and unique, Luca shines as an unfussy, energizing place to gather loved ones around a table and lose track of time over a delicious meal. and classical training have earned Gail Gray degrees from Carnegie Mellon, the title ‘Fine Artist,” and Franklin & Marshall College’s honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts. However, Gail has identified as an artist for as long as she can remember. In kindergarten, Gail’s teacher would name things for her to draw on the board, so she could entertain her small classmates with her talent. Today, stepping into Gail’s North Queen Street art studio feels a little like stepping into a space-time continuum. Art and

creative materials cover most of the space from floor to ceiling, and artifacts spill out over shelves.“This is what it looks like inside of my head,” she jokes. There is a deep sense of history that permeates the space and finished pieces that tell the story of a fine artist with an affinity for finding the convergence of science and abstract art. There is also a great sense of anticipation, a sense that you’re standing on the precipice of a creative moment, in the presence of great art yet to be born. “I feel like I’m just getting into my prime,” says Gray. Always on the cutting edge of art and science, Gail enjoys tinkering with non-toxic mediums

and avoids volatile substances that could negatively affect the environment. As a pioneer of art collaborations in Lancaster, Gail appreciates the way this community now elevates, inspires, and supports one another. Gail and her husband, Mayor Rick Gray, decorate their home with the work of many local artists. “I’m still achieving things,” she says with a smile, and it is evident that Gail Gray will continue to leave her mark on the arts community in Lancaster for years to come. The Spice and Tea Exchange is an exciting addition to the foodie scene in Lancaster. The old-fashioned store front and rustic decor pay homage to days gone by. With jars lining the walls, recipe idea cards, and unique blends just waiting to be created, the Gitomers are ready to help cooks of all skill levels concoct their own innovative flavors. “All the blends are made here, so everything’s fresh and unique,” says Judy. The store boasts over 140 spices, with 80 exclusive hand-mixed blends, and endless opportunities for customers to invent something new. newly appointed president of the Lancaster City Alliance, Marshall Snively, spends a lot of time working with the “Building On Strength” strategic plan. He loves connecting entrepreneurs and innovators in the city. He believes in the power of coming together. “I really do think that we are a model of collaboration and everyone working together, not only for their own good, but to see this city thrive.” He is inspired by the arts community, “Artists are the backbone of this community and the creative force we have in Lancaster is crazy good!” And he’s hoping to see a Lancaster City skyline evolve during his tenure. 54 354 north prince street 717.394.0783 lancastercityalliance.org

MONWE A LT H K I TC H E N & C A F E FRESH FACES: COM & T HE CULIN A RY C L A SSRO O M rachael reinmiller and linda bell share a variety of things—

a passion for food, a love of community, and one light-drenched space at 443 North Mulberry Street.

Commonwealth Kitchen & Cafe is a second location where Rachael plans to continue building on the success of Commonwealth on Queen—a cafe, catering, & event venue on the 300 block of North Queen Street. By day, the new space will operate as both a small neighborhood cafe offering breakfast, lunch, sweets and baked goods, and as a catering kitchen. The fully equipped commercial kitchen will be used to prepare made-from-scratch food for both cafes (with each location 443 north mulberry street

having its own unique menu), and to support Commonwealth’s growing catering business. This larger space will allow for vast options for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, as well as custom menus for special events held on or off site. After hours, Commonwealth Kitchen & Cafe will remain a gathering place. Friends, couples, coworkers, and home chefs of varying skill levels can come to learn a thing or two from Chef Instructor Linda Bell in the Culinary Classroom. Groups will gather in the kitchen to learn techniques in a fun, hands-on environment. After creating in the kitchen, participants are invited to open a bottle of wine and gather in the cafe area to enjoy the meal they prepared. Linda is excited to be expanding

from her Culinary Classroom in Reading, and getting to know the foodies and culinary artists here in Lancaster. The Culinary Classroom offers unique 3-hour classes on select evenings that are perfect for team building, corporate events, bachelorette parties, date nights, girls night out, or just a way to spice up your weeknight dinner repertoire. Whether you’re brunching in the Cafe, learning in the Kitchen, or planning the menu for your next special event, Rachael and Linda are excited to share their vision of light and love, flavor, and fun to all who enter! FRESH FACE:

LSJ ST UD I OS

“i think we are all artists at the end of the day,” says LSJ

Studios founder, Loryn Spangler Jones. “No matter what we do, we use our creativity to create a life for ourselves. For me, it just happens to be on canvas.” No stranger to the Lancaster Art Scene, Loryn is excited to have her own studio and gallery on 110 West King Street. The studio serves as Loryn’s creative space as well as a place for classes, and a gallery showcasing her own work and that of other artists. Loryn is the rare kind of person who fills the space between life and art, so that you can’t quite tell where one stops and the other begins. As an artist, she pours passion and raw emotion into her work, braving vulnerability, revealing authenticity, resulting in worthiness. “I’m a firm believer

in exposing, and taking that armor off. That’s why I make art, and that connects me to this community.” She applies these principles when choosing other artists’ work to show in her gallery. “I’m not putting something on my walls unless I find it to be deeply authentic”. she says.

raw, intuitive talent, connectivity, and accessibility. As a teacher of adults and “small humans,” she empowers artists of all ages to find themselves by expressing and channelling their art and vulnerability through lenses of restraint and patience.

As part of the international art scene, Loryn is excited to introduce the community to artists and influences from around the world, bringing a more global perspective to the walls of LSJ. She embraces each of her roles; artist, teacher, and art promoter with a passion, fervor, and “hustle” not easily matched.

Loryn expresses deep gratitude for the community that embraces and supports her. “I am where I am, because of the people behind me”. she states. It is with gratitude for those who have helped her on this journey that she sets out to lift up and inspire others.

In the dichotomy of tenderness and ferocity, understated simplicity and complexities, Loryn’s work showcases

Debbie & Nick Dower

FRESH FACE:

ANANDA I NT E G RAT I O N

at ananda integration, owners

Debra and Nick Dower bring together a diverse team of bodyworkers to provide services in structural integration, acupuncture, electromagnetic field therapy, and other more traditional modalities. Debra is a board-certified structural integrator with a decade of experience. She is a co-teacher for KMI Anatomy Trains, one of the most widely known and respected Structural Integration training schools. She also teaches Anatomy and Physiology at the Lancaster School of Massage. Nick has a degree in biology and biochemistry and an advanced degree in acupuncture. He also teaches at the Pennsylvania College of Health Science. Structural Integration, the main focus of

the practice, is bodywork that manipulates connective tissue (often called fascia) to optimize the body’s alignment and balance, easing movement, improving function, and relieving pain. In a typical structural integration session the therapist will soften, lengthen, and reposition the body’s web of connective tissue so that those tissues are in better physiologic harmony and tensional balance. Clients often report increased body awareness, greater freedom of movement, reduced pain, and a strong overall feeling of wholeness in their bodies. But while Structural Integration and acupuncture are focuses at Ananda, the team of therapists do not limit themselves to one or two modalities. The practitioners come to Ananda with an eclectic mixture of training, experience, and practices.

On staff are Trager specialists, former nurses, and those with experience treating every body type from athlete to cancer patient. The strength of the Ananda model lies in its ecumenical team approach and its insistence that, while we all have bodies with the same anatomy and physiology, each of those bodies is also quite different. As Debra says, “The aim is to empower people and bring them back to wholeness. What’s fun is getting to the root of someone’s problem and improving it. We want to get to the core issue and start to change patterns, changing how clients live in their bodies.” Learn more at anandaintegration.com.

VOICES

DAVID WILSON “David’s song “Simple Mind (The Student Loan Song)” caught my attention. His voice is warm and he shares the message of the stress that the college graduates are dealing with today. Listening to his music, I hear influences from James Taylor and Jason Isbell!” – Helen Leicht

remember your first time living away

from home? Even now I bet you can recall the feeling in your gut. Having moved away to college, David felt it too. He turned to his guitar for comfort. You see, during his Penn Manor Township youth, he was surrounded by the music of his parents and the piano, playing & singing of his older brother Matt. It seemed only natural he would pick up the guitar and join in. Soon the Wilson brothers were entertaining the public at Annie Bailey’s on First Fridays or Open Mic nights at The Alley Cat. His debut album, “Songs From Wood Street,”

82 figlancaster.com

came out in 2014. Recorded and produced in Lancaster, nine songs which best captured the inspiration set forth by the view outside his college apartment’s window in Pittsburgh. Just as those college days in Pittsburgh gave life to “Songs From Wood Street,” so now does David’s life back East. David writes and sings about what he sees—everyday life and good old fashioned daydreaming—hence new songs titled “PA 41” and “Philadelphia.” All four songs on the new E.P. “Black Top Road” were recorded and produced in Lancaster County with a full band at Steve Puffer’s Parallel Productions.

The first ten seconds after clicking play on his E.P. make it quite clear, David Wilson is stepping up his game. There can be little doubt WXPN heard “Simple Mind (The Student Loan Song)” and reacted the same way. You should have seen his beaming and speechless face when we asked him what it was like to hear his song on the radio. “It’s what I strive for. It made me feel...validated.” Hear more at davidwilsonmusic.com. See David Wilson in action at Tellus360 October 4 at 7 pm as part of the Fig Voices concert series.

So we asked our children to create “Starry Night” by painting their own block with a little direction, but infused with their own insights and abilities. The picture emerged as the pieces were brought together. We believe that as we trust and grow in community, at any age, life will be created as we each contribute what we have to bring. Lancaster Marriott at Penn Square Cash Bar 6 – 7 p.m. | Dinner served 7:15 p.m.

“Marlee Matlin is one of the most dynamic and diverse keynote speakers in the world, taking audiences through the highs and lows of her Hollywood career. Listeners come away informed and empowered to make a difference in the world, with the knowledge that they can start in just one person’s life.” Ticket sales start August 15: $100 each Visit www.moravianmanor.org for tickets or more information.

Marlee Matlin received worldwide critical acclaim for her film debut in Paramount Pictures’ Children of a Lesser God, for which she received the Academy Award for Best Actress and the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Drama. Though she lost her hearing when she was only 18 months old, Marlee never let her challenges dictate her future or deter her dreams. She has had a successful Hollywood career…starring on her own NBC series Reasonable Doubts opposite Mark Harmon; held a role for seven years on The West Wing; and made numerous guest appearances including ER, Desperate Housewives, CSI: New York, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, Nip/Tuck, CSI, and Glee. She also starred on ABC’s Dancing with the Stars. She’s published a New York Times Best Selling autobiography, I’ll Scream Later, and authored three novels for children including Deaf Child Crossing and Nobody’s Perfect. She’s also dedicated herself to raising awareness for many humanitarian causes. Engaging Community is an annual program hosted by Moravian Manor that builds upon our community focus by offering a quality educational, inspirational, entertaining program to increase the awareness of Moravian Manor’s mission and role throughout Lancaster County and beyond. PROUDLY INTRODUCING LANCASTER'S

KING & QUEEN OF HAPPY! FALL 2016

Our king & queen received a prize pack fit for royalty thanks to the generous gifts from Willow Valley Communities, Sweet Legacy Gourmet, & Fulton Theatre.

KING BARRY KORNHAUSER QUEEN RACHAEL REINMILLER Queen Rachael owns and runs Commonwealth on Queen, and Commonwealth Kitchen & Cafe, and believes in helping other women in business, supporting local food purveyors, and putting her heart and soul into everything she does. She is also a founding board member of Create Karma, a Lancaster-based non-profit dedicated to creating a healthy community through wellness and leadership training.

rachael's words to live by:

“Turns out, it’s not where, but who you’re with that really matters.” - dave matthews

King Barry, a nationally-honored playwright and theater educator, is the Assistant Director of Campus & Community Engagement at Millersville University’s Ware Center, helping to create transformative arts-learning opportunities for students, the general public, and particularly, marginalized youth. Barry is a kid at heart and loved by all for bringing laughter, joy, and happiness to countless lives.

barry's words to live by: In this Presidential election year, I’m reminded of Thomas Jefferson’s great notion that we are all endowed with certain unalienable rights, among them the “pursuit of happiness.” Well, I’ve been taught that the very best way to exercise that right is to try to assure that the happiness we pursue always includes the happiness of others. That said, I also recall the words of another great President, Abraham Lincoln, who sagely suggested that “most folks are as happy as they make up their minds to be.”

OPERATIN G IN THE at lancaster neuroscience & spine associates, the center for spine care, patient safety comes

first. Glenda Waltman, Clinical Director, and Dr. Robert Roberts, Medical Director, monitor state health regulations and work together to ensure that the medical team at The Center for Spine Care follow the required guidelines and procedures. The Center has caring and experienced staff members comprised of two physicians and ten clinical staff, who treat each patient with compassion and commitment.

SAFEST ENVIRONMENT

The Center for Spine Care specializes in pain management and each patient receives individualized care based on their specific needs. The physicians administer spinal injections in the cervical, thoracic, or lumbar areas to relieve pain. When patients arrive for procedures, a team member reviews and confirms critical details through a series of patient-centric procedures. It’s only after completing a series of checks that any procedure begins. The goal is to safely and effectively alleviate pain for each patient.

The Center prescribes a simple approach towards caring for its patients while providing a safe environment for their treatment. Those measures range from engaging patients upon arrival at their first visit through using the standard of care for their procedure. The doctors and their staff build rapport with the patients— consistently receiving high marks in patient satisfaction. The Center for Spine Care is the premier place for pain management.

Featuring Natural & Organic Mattresses!

Co-Owners Ben McClure & Jeff Giagnocavo

while you sleep, your immune

system recovers and prepares for the day ahead and replenishes every cell in your body. Low-quality, uncomfortable mattresses have been linked to discomfort and pain, which can prevent quality sleep. People who struggle with sleep deprivation may suffer from irritability, depression, over-eating—even face a higher risk for Alzheimer’s. If your mattress is filled with

chemical toxins, airborne allergens, or worse… your body is doing battle with those things rather than repairing itself. One of the most significant actions we can take to reduce our exposure to toxins and improve our overall health is to make changes to the one household item that is in direct contact with our bodies for one third of our lives—our mattress.

An all-natural, organic mattress is free of potentially harmful chemicals. Instead, natural materials like latex, wool, and cotton are used. Gardner’s carries over 25 natural sleep solutions, including three certified organic brands.
