west chester is all about summer loving. Swinging Summer
Thursdays have officially started with streets filled with laughing, sticky children walking with colorful cones of homemade ice cream and gelato. The warm days bring cool drinks to quench adult thirsts. Good food is plentiful as patrons lounge and enjoy the outdoor seating lining the historic streets. The clink of glasses cuts through the evening heat as friends celebrate good wishes. Every Saturday the farmers market is filled with local abundance—from fresh veggies to organic meats—as market baskets overflow with vibrant bouquets picked at our local farms. We live fully and love fully in our town. This summer, get out on First Fridays, walk the streets, and meet the shop owners who put their heart and soul into making West Chester special. Sit down with the kids at Penn’s Table for breakfast or meet a friend for an authentic French pastry from La Baguette Magique. Grab a picnic lunch from Carlino’s and hit one of the many parks. With over 70 eateries, we have the culinary diversity to satisfy any palate. The mission of Fig is to help you love and support your local community by showing you all there is to experience in the town in which you live, work, and play. In these pages, discover what makes the summer in West Chester truly amazing. When we shop in our boutiques and eat in our restaurants, we are positively and directly affecting our neighbors. Take your time, wander through the streets, and experience West Chester to its fullest this summer. In Good Taste,

TRACY S A M M A R O N E
there may be no better way
to celebrate everything that is great about West Chester than to spend a night with members of the community on a downtown rooftop during that magical “golden hour” just before sunset. No one knows this better than Tracy Sammarone, who’s been the chair of the Up On the Roof event for the West Chester Downtown Foundation for the past ten years. “It was started to bring people who love West Chester together,” she says, “and to raise money to keep it vital and beautiful.” Originally from southern Chester County, and a graduate of West Chester University, 10 figwestchester.com
Tracy made her permanent home in the borough in 1988 after getting married. She and her husband have lived here ever since, both raising a daughter who went through the local school district, and working for Arthur Hall Insurance in downtown West Chester since 2004. “I love the way West Chester has grown into such a vibrant town with so much going on,” she says, “and so many really cool events for everybody, all year long.” In addition to her career with Arthur Hall Insurance, Tracy has been part of the volunteer world here since 1999, during West Chester’s bicentennial celebration.
Aside from the Up On the Roof event, Tracy also serves on the foundation’s Grants Committee, and volunteers her time with the Rotary Club’s annual Chili Cook-Off each fall. “The thing I love so much,” she says, “is that I find myself surrounded by so many enthusiastic people who are committed to making our town as vital as it is, and as full of energy and fun as it is. There’s an amazing number of people who are committed to doing that kind of thing.” Learn more about the Up On the Roof event at wcdf.org.

PROTECTING THE COMMUNITY
the good will fire company is an engine company with the West Chester Fire Department (WCFD). Organized over 175 years ago in 1833, they are one of three volunteer fire companies that serve our community. Their impressive fleet includes a 3000 gallon tanker truck, an air light truck that uitilizes a special compressor, and two pumper trucks. The Good Will Fire Company responds to an average of 400 alarms per year, which represent various types of incidents including major building fires, auto accidents, fire alarms sounding in a building, and any other type of call where their assistance is requested. They have an active crew of approximately 40 men and women who volunteer their time to train and respond to calls 24 hours a day, seven days a week. You can find these local heros at the intersection of South Bolmar Street and East Union Street, in the Borough of West Chester.

Maria & Frank Mingrino
GIVING BACK : L I M O N C E L L O italian culture is steeped in art,
architecture, music, food—and, of course, family. Yet the Italian idea of family differs somewhat from the iconic American notion of just mom, dad, and 2.5 kids surrounded by a white picket fence. The Italian family is focused on extended family. In that spirit, Limoncello Ristorante & Caterers, on Walnut Street, is a family affair that extends its solidarity, loyalty, and goodwill to the entire West Chester community. Frank Mingrino, along with his brother Paul and sister Dina, are a firstgeneration family whose outlook and cuisine are inspired by the Old Country.
18 figwestchester.com
R I S T O R A N T E & C AT E R E R S
“I love how quaint the town is,” Frank says, “and the people you get to meet while running the restaurant. We have a really generous clientele that helps us give back to the community.” Limoncello works a lot with the Make a Wish Foundation, offering catered dinners for 12 where customers can bid on items benefiting the charity. The restaurant also holds a large event for Toys for Tots the first week in December every year. Anyone who comes in with a toy, gets to indulge in a huge spread of Italian delights. Last year’s event was so successful, they ended up with a truckload of toys for the charity.
Limoncello also provides catering for the West Chester Downtown Foundation’s “Up on the Rooftop event,” which includes dinner and dancing under the stars at sunset, and helps support the annual cleaning and beautification of downtown West Chester. The Mingrino family’s connection to the community is truly a family affair. “My daughter Ava is a Daisy in the Girl Scouts,” Frank says, “and she just donated 135 boxes of cookies to the Friends Association, so she was really excited about that.” Learn more about Limoncello’s upcoming events by following on Facebook.

The Crozer-Keystone Sleep Centers now offer screening for an innovative treatment called Inspire, for patients who suffer from sleep apnea. According to the National Sleep Foundation, more than 18 million Americans have sleep apnea. For those who have been diagnosed with moderate-to-severe forms of the disease, a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine is the gold-standard treatment option. However, many people can’t—or won’t—tolerate CPAP. Inspire is a small implantable device that maintains normal breathing patterns during sleep by gently
