DOWN to a

FINE ART

The weather will soon cool and the green leaves will turn burgundy. I will go to Nomadic Pies and buy a cheesy potato pie and my house will smell like comfort. I will put on skinny jeans from Chantilly Blue, boots from Ashley Austin, and walk the town with a small hand entwined in mine. He will want a wooden toy he sees in the window of the Mushroom Cap and I will want a new lipstick from Houppette. I will sip coffee and he will munch on a brownie from Talula's Table. This is fall in Kennett Square. Historic Kennett Square is walkable and inviting with coffee shops, eateries, speciality boutiques, and galleries. You can spend an hour, a day, or a weekend exploring and learning what makes Historic Kennett Square so special. Our third annual arts issue focuses on the culture of Historic Kennett Square, rich with activity and creativity. It is diverse, unique, and interesting both in history and innovation. How can one town boast of the Kennett Brewfest, Mushroom Festival, trails and parks, and have its own renowned professional symphony? And then, of course, there is Longwood Gardens. Perhaps this is why Historic Kennett Square is called the apex of small town Americana. There is something for every creative taste. At Fig, we encourage you to explore your community. We believe in growth, innovation, and creativity. As Kennett grows, so does Fig; we are excited to introduce Brianna Carlisle to our team (read more on page 32). She brings an impressive marketing background to Fig, as well as a love of Kennett Square. You can often find her running the trails or enjoying Longwood Gardens with her children. She is a local who believes in the importance of community. Both Brianna and I invite and encourage you to make your own discoveries in this small town with big sensibilities. Enjoy,

PICKS eating in As I write this Recipe for Dinner around the Table, we are on the brink of a new time and a new Presidency. The outcome remains unknown, but in Kennett Square we know we all agree on one issue; families matter. Kennett Square is a community of families, many of them large and layered. Others are small but equally present and active in our community. Children abound! I am always surprised by what fantastic little eaters they are. A beloved 6th grader, Cassedy, tells me which blue cheese she prefers and occasionally asks for fried oysters. A five-year-old (sweetly) complains if we run out of our house-made chorizo at Talula's Table. We are clearly raising the children in our community with an appreciation for food and hospitality. I had only hoped to spin that sentiment when I named Talula's Table after my, then 6-month-old, Annalee Talula Rae ten years ago. Life is busy and the school year is upon us. The daily question rises in every home; what's for dinner? In our region, we have some amazing options. Some of them can even help us cultivate an interest in the world and other cultures. We play theme night at my home, and in doing so learn something new. A favorite is French crepe night; savory for dinner and sweet for dessert. Island night includes

pineapple smoothies and mango shrimp kabobs. Dinner time around the table is a precious tradition that we must preserve. Make adjustments to your schedule to make it happen. I work at night, so a traditional dinner time is a weekly event in my home but on most nights it is later than usual. Make efforts to stretch the meal out, coax conversation, and elicit laughs. Gather and prepare the meal, set the scene, and bring on the family! Naturally, it comes full circle in the comfort of home.

family meal recipe ^ No TV ^ No phones

Start tonight with this all-local, kid-friendly, low-allergen, healthy menu. ^ Buy veggies & dip from The Produce Place ^ Roast an all-natural chicken from the Country Butcher, and glaze with Swarmbustin' Honey and herbs from your garden or pantry ^ Whip sweet potatoes from Barnard's Orchard and add a touch of Bailey's Dairy's savory cinnamon butter ^ Pick up a baguette and a pile of mac & cheese from Talula's

^ Set the table! Use or make fun napkin rings, placements and serviettes

^ Add an apple pie from Nomadic Pies

^ Wear your favorite apron

It's worth the effort & I'm here to help!

^ Serve with La Michoacana ice cream

^ Make a special beverage ^ Serve a few courses ^ Talk about life ^ Listen to each other ^ Pass a casserole ^ Compliment the effort ^ Wash the dishes & digest

connecting the kennett community to its natural beauty

what is the kennett greenway? The Kennett Greenway is an initiative to physically connect the Kennett community to its natural beauty through the formation of a 10-12 mile pedestrian and bicycle loop. This network of trails, linking Kennett’s preserved open space, recreational facilities, and other community assets such as retail, restaurants, and points of interest, will be interconnected, safe, and well-maintained. This initiative is made possible by The Kennett Trails Alliance along with the support of many other local organizations. It seeks to connect the Kennett community to its natural beauty while promoting health, safety, a respect for the environment, and a sense of community. “organizations, towns, people—they’re either moving forward

or they’re moving backward,” Larry Bosley says. “Things don’t remain static and that’s particularly true in this day and age of everything moving very quickly.” Larry, founder and CEO of LGB Properties in downtown Kennett Square, has been anything but static throughout his life. He spent 35 years as an educator—first as a teacher in Bucks County, then as principal of Woodrow Wilson High School, and finally as the superintendent of the Kennett Consolidated School District—where he led the expansion and renovation of 22 figkennett.com

three schools and learned the subdivision and land development process of local municipalities while he was at it. “I liked the educational environment,” Larry says. “And I liked the athletics a lot, so I wanted to coach. Then once I became a teacher I decided I really wanted to be in charge of the schools, and once I ran school I wanted to run the entire district.” Larry’s also been on just about every board of directors in the Kennett community over the years, including president of the Kennett Rotary Club, president of the United Way, and Historic Kennett Square—where he still serves the economic development arm.

“I am very committed to Kennett Square,” he says. “I think the town is wonderful and it’s great to see the growth, the way the town has developed over the years.” Though Larry grew up in western Pennsylvania and began his education career in Bucks County, once he fell in love with Kennett, there was no looking back. “I raised my children here,” he says. “I just think it’s a great, friendly town. It’s more rural than Bucks County and yet it has all the amenities of a suburban community.” Learn more about Larry and LGB Properties at lgbproperties.com/aboutus.

flourishing artist OF LONGWOOD A

Lauren Hill in the Conservatory at Longwood Gardens

a fig inside look: meet the maker meet lauren hill

Lauren has been a part of the indoor display team at Longwood Gardens for eleven years. She is a graduate of Penn College, majoring in floral design and interior plantscaping. Throughout the year, Lauren changes the displays in the conservatory to reflect the seasons and maximize the design.

Interior plantscaping and floral design is truly an art. How do you dream up new concepts for your displays? “We have an amazing team! Our display designer works very closely with the individual staff regarding their areas of display and together we bounce ideas off each other. It is definitely a team effort imagining new displays. New ideas can come from so many different people/sources.” What are some things that inspire you to create? “I’m a very visual person. I need to ‘see’ inspiration. Magazines…other gardens… beautifully landscaped neighborhoods. You can’t stay surrounded by your own space and be inspired. You need to branch out and see what others around you are doing. Just taking a walk outside can be inspiring.” Tell us more about your contribution to those beautiful spaces. “It takes many, many hands to maintain these conservatory spaces. The Orangery and Exhibition Hall are two of the most intensely changed display spaces. You could come visit every few weeks and be amazed at what is

new on display! I work very closely with our students, volunteers, and part-time staff, organizing the day's projects and prioritizing what needs attention. My position really allows me to be in the trenches, which I love! Digging, pruning, watering, and sweating!” What is a typical day like on the job? “The great thing about Longwood is that there is no typical! My day starts at 6 am and I try to spend the hours from 6:30 to 9:00 am on an aerial lift doing some pruning in the Conservatory. Water the gardens. Sweep up the floors. Give a list of projects to my volunteers for the day. Spend some time teaching students about the aspects of conservatory work. Interacting with our guests is a large part of my day. In the afternoons I try to get to my desk and do some office work. This can include sourcing new plants, planning out Christmas displays, writing student evaluations, etc. Oh, and I squeeze in a meeting or two.” How did you become interested in horticulture? “When I was in high school I worked part time at our local library. My grandmother

had a beautiful flower garden and I would regularly cut flowers to arrange and take to the library to display on the front desk. It was just a fun hobby and then people started telling me that I was good at it and that this could be a career. That was all it took to get me interested in floral design and suddenly gardening was a real option for me. Longwood Gardens is a huge advocate for educating students about careers in horticulture. We are partnering in a new initiative called Seed Your Future which aims to promote horticulture as a viable and exciting career path for our nation’s youth.”

seed your future Seed Your Future is an initiative to promote horticulture awareness across the United States. Supported by more than 150 partner organizations, including lead partners Longwood Gardens and the American Society for Horticultural Science, Seed Your Future strives to grow the horticulture field by advancing educational programs for students in middle school through college. GIVING BACK :

one of nicole grebloskie’s

favorite things to do is to walk into town with her family. “We love to go into town where we can shop, enjoy a cup of coffee, eat breakfast, lunch, or dinner and then get ice cream.” She often jokes with her 9-year-old son that they can only get ice cream if they walk into town! Nicole, the current president of Historic Kennett Square, believes that Kennett Square has the perfect mix—a bustling town, cultural activities, availability of local farm products, and friendly neighbors ready to lend a helping hand. Nicole’s love of small town was born in her annual summer visits 36 figkennett.com

new events such as: Meet the Maker, a celebration of the Kennett Square Farmers Market, Winter Fest, Evening of the Arts, and Third Thursdays.

Nicole, a West Chester University graduate, is currently a partner with Arthur Hall Insurance. She and her husband, Steve, moved to Kennett Square in 2002. After volunteering for the Kennett Brewfest she was appointed to the Board of Directors of Historic Kennett Square in 2009 and was elected president this year.

Nicole says “Our goal is to bring people and businesses into town, encourage community participation in all the events, and continue to foster the ‘cool town’ atmosphere—which is why Kennett Square is such a great place to work, live, and play.”

Nicole leads the committee that plans the Kennett Brewfest and assisted in developing
