HAPPINESS IS

something both beautifully simple and bafflingly complex. We pursue it every day, but are often surprised as it comes upon us in unexpected ways. Laughter—that uniquely human phenomenon—is our instinctive response to that surprise: A quick intake of air. A gasp. And then anything from delicate giggles to boisterous guffaws. Research shows that the minds of happy people are flooded with all sorts of good things, helping them to think more creatively, see new ways of doing things, and open themselves to fresh ideas. And, so, as we embark on our second year of showcasing the best of art, culture, shopping, dining, and living in Columbia, we’re launching a little something called the Cola Happy Project. We want to help people discover the happiness in their own lives and share it with others. We want to encourage them to laugh and smile and remember why they fell in love with Columbia.

At Fig®, we believe the keys to happiness are optimism, love, security, health, spirituality, altruism, perspective, humor, and purpose. And we also believe our spring issue is the perfect place to cultivate seeds of happiness that will bloom throughout 2015. Be sure to check out pages 33 – 35 for some of the best smiles in Columbia as well as more about this yearlong project. Our goal is simple: to make Columbia a happier place to live, love, work, and play. We want to think about happiness in terms of cultivating curiosity, performing acts of service, and creatively filling this city with an appreciation that ordinary people in the pursuit of happiness can lead to extraordinary things. We’re looking for happiness and believe that Columbia is the place to find it.

social MISSION

At Fig® we believe in the power of a community that works together to identify needs and find solutions—one that creates community connections and is passionate about helping its neighbors. We believe in the mission of The Nurturing Center—our 2015 Social Mission Partner. Please consider giving to them with your dollars and your time this year.

NURTURING TRUSTING, CARING RELATIONSHIPS. providing comprehensive, family-focused, behavioral health services to prevent and treat child abuse and neglect, The Nurturing Center believes that every individual is a person of value and worth. As they work to nurture trusting, caring relationships between adults and children, The Nurturing Center recognizes that the earlier positive parent-child interactions and family functioning are promoted, the more successful they are. In a warm and loving setting, the team at The Nurturing Center works one-on-one with adults to coach them on how to parent and interact with their children. In addition to helping them understand children’s normal developmental stages, the team also helps parents cope with problems such as unemployment, lack of education, depression, or other stress-inducing circumstances. When families are referred to the center, they are welcomed into an environment that promotes the therapeutic and healing process. Volunteers are critical to the effective provision of services at The Nurturing Center. They are interwoven throughout all aspects of the agency, providing direct and indirect support of young children and families. Whether they are working with a child one-on-one in the classrooms, planting flowers, aiding in the redesign of the playground, or bringing special sweets from a local bakery, they are cherished and supported by The Nurturing Center staff. For more information, contact Kathye Holder at 803.771.4160 x12 or kholder@thenurturingcenter.org.

The

world is our classroom where engaged learning happens naturally

City Roots’ Co-Owner Eric McClam works with Heathwood Students

Columbia’s age three through grade 12 independent school where students learn to expect more.

Because we respect students’ minds and expect the most of them, they gain both the competence and confidence to accomplish the extraordinary.

At Heathwood Hall Episcopal School, our 122-acre campus means much more than a pretty view out the window—it functions as a classroom, a playground, a cathedral, a laboratory, a museum, and a teacher in its own right. Whether through award-winning environmental education and outdoor leadership programs or our recent partnership with City Roots, Heathwood students see the world as a place where learning happens everywhere and all the time.

“hello! my name is darion mccloud and i tell stories.”

them in a musical theatrical environment where they “sing stories and tell songs.”

An actor, director, storyteller, educator, arts activist, and children’s literature advocate, Darion McCloud is the founder and creative director of Story Squad. Committing his life to the transforming power of art, Darion is a true Columbia original.

In a nutshell: “If Parliament Funkadelic had a baby with Sesame Street and that baby was raised on Marvel Comics and Reading Rainbow, that baby is STORY SQUAD!”

Working with a team of artists/superheroes (James Robinson, Brenda Hanley, Wendell “THE Dubber” Culbreath, Bonita Peeples, and Kyle C. Coleman), Story Squad takes characters from literature and places

With its mash-up of song, storytelling, dance, music, and spoken word—all aimed at educating, entertaining, and inspiring— Story Squad simply makes people happy. While Darion’s work with Columbia theatre groups like NiA is often for adult consumption, Story Squad is crossgenerational: “We’ve kind of become a

jam band for all kinds of families: rich, poor, black, white, old, young—it doesn’t matter. We bring fun, literature, literacy, music, and theatre in ways that probably are going to surprise you but still feel familiar.” “When you come to a Story Squad show, yeah, the Mother Goose rhyme is familiar,” says Darion, “but the funky rhythm we put behind it is going to get you! The way we flip a classic piece of children’s literature has parents bobbing their heads along with their kids, all holding their breaths in excitement and anticipation.” Learn more at tinyurl.com/storysquad. figcolumbia.com

Marcella & Winston Ridley

giving back:

MARCELLA RIDLEY

every mother is an advocate for her own children, but

Marcella Ridley has taken that advocacy to a whole new level. As an advocate for her son Winston, who has autism, she learned the ins and outs of early intervention, treatment, insurance payments, IEPs, and a host of other things. She learned to make her way through it all for Winston, and knew she wanted other children with autism and their families to have the same opportunity. “I want kids with autism to be able to enjoy the same things and have the same quality of life as a typically developing child,” Marcella says. And she did something about it.

30 figcolumbia.com

The foundation that bears her son’s name, Winston’s Wish, was founded by Marcella and her husband in 2006. They wanted all children with autism to have access to the intervention and support that would help them reach their full potential. The non-profit organization is funded entirely by private donations, and volunteers and supporters keep it going strong. Marcella herself plays many roles for Winston’s Wish. She advocates for legislation, including Ryan’s Law, which went into effect in 2008, and requires that insurance companies cover treatment for autism. She offers support and encouragement to other parents, sharing her experience navigating the treatment and educational system for her own son. She’s a fundraiser and an organizer,

spearheading Sprummer, Winston’s Wish’s signature annual event (and always a great time, with well-known musicians and fantastic food). She does it all, but her goal is to be unnecessary. She smiles when she says, “I love it when I work myself right out of a job.” Winston himself is thriving. As a seventh grader, he’s enjoying school, including the track and field team, and smiling a lot. Like his mother, his happiness is infectious. He cradles her face in his hands, asking, “Are you happy, Mama? Are happy?” “Yes,” she answers with a smile. “I am happy, Winston.” Seeing children with autism live full lives, with access to the services they need, makes Marcella happy. skanks a good-time dirty rock and roll band, Debbie and

the Skanks flips expectations and conventions on their heads as beautiful lead vocalist Deborah Adedokun belts out the lyrics while a trio of total skanks (guitarist Joe Roberts, bass player Brett Kent, and drummer Adam Cox) blows the roof off the joint. This talented, fun, high-octane band proves that the only ingredients necessary for their brand of rock are great friends, decent instruments, and a full case of PBR. Founded by guitarist/chief songwriter Rev. Joe Buck Roberts, the band’s influences range from

Chuck Berry, The Stooges, the New York Dolls, and Phil Spector Wall-of-Sound Era groups (including The Crystals, The Ronettes, and Ike & Tina Turner). Turning out songs such as “Atom Bomb” with lyrics like: “I’m an atom bomb and you ain’t seen nothing like me. When I start falling, everything is history,” it’s clear this isn’t a band of shrinking violets. Debbie and the Skanks is determined to rock Columbia off its foundation. So strap in and enjoy the ride. Can’t wait to hear this band? Visit debbieandtheskanks.bandcamp.com to check them out for yourself!

as artists who love to create, Phyllis McElveen and

Christi Arnette opened Row Gallery as a place to fulfill their creative passions. A gallery featuring their own work as well as local and regional artists, Row Gallery offers lamps, jewelry, glasswork, pottery, and more. “Christi and I have been neighbors and friends since our oldest children went to kindergarten together—about 16 years ago,” explains Phyllis. “And we’ve always had this

creative connection that has bonded us all of these years.” Opening in February 2014, Row Gallery quickly outgrew its original location and moved next door where they now have plenty of room. With this space to expand, Phyllis and Christi have begun offering Wednesday night Palette Parties, which are quickly proving to be a fun and popular way for anyone to explore their creative side: “Our Palette Parties are open to anyone who is willing to have a good time. We

Melissa Kyzer & Lisa Kyzer, Co-owners

fresh face: Lisa’s Take on Trends for 2015: “Designers are stretching the limitations from the same silhouettes and adding unique twists. My personal favorite trend is the illusion neck lines with handsewn bead work. You can truly appreciate the art in bridal when you stop and notice the details.”

LONDON AND LACE

once the stuff of daydreams, the concept for

London and Lace originated seven years ago with a group of friends who imagined a boutique that would focus solely on the bride and her journey. Beginning with a name that evokes sophisticated femininity, this dream grew until one of the friends took the first steps toward making it a reality. Relocating from Asheville, Lisa Kyzer knew Columbia was the right

place for London and Lace to take root: “Columbia is expanding, and there is so much amazing growth. Devine Street has always seemed to be a quaint community, built of local shops devoting themselves to improving our city.” Today, Lisa looks around her beautiful space and envisions a day when her old friends will work together again. Until then, she is helping to build this legacy alongside her business partner,

Melissa, as an enchanting, romantic, and inviting shop where brides-to-be can fulfill their own daydreams. “Each day is new and exciting,” says Lisa. “My favorite part is sharing a moment with a bride that she will always remember, giving her the best experience she could have ever imagined. It’s a joyous time for us both.”

BELLA BRIDESMAIDS

located in an historic vista warehouse space with

a bright and modern aesthetic, Bella Bridesmaids is as welcoming, warm, and friendly as its owner Carlee Sizemore. “I absolutely love my brides,” says Carlee. “I love chatting with them about their vision for their wedding and then poring over fabric swatches and color palettes and details to get it just right. I get such joy from bringing a small part of that vision to life for them.

When I see those images from their wedding and all of those cohesive elements come together, I know I’ve done my best work.” Born and raised in Columbia with a degree from USC, Carlee is a third generation entrepreneur to own and operate a business Columbia: “I believe in our city and in the value of its small businesses.” Recently opened in November 2014, Bella Bridesmaids’ Lady Street location allows

brides-to-be to pop in for an appointment and then celebrate another check-off from their bridal “to-do” list with brunch or cocktails just steps from the store. Prior to opening her Columbia shop, Carlee explains: “I realized the immense opportunity to offer brides and maids of the Midlands fresh and modern gowns without the inconvenience of travel to places like Charlotte, Greenville, Charleston, or Atlanta.”

Carlee’s Take on Trends for 2015: “Mixing fabrics and textures such as beading with lace, tulle, and chiffon. We’re still seeing a ton of neutral palettes; however, brides are bringing back color with variegated shades in the same color family to create an ombre look (light to dark). Interesting necklines and cut-out backs are hot right now along with convertible dresses that can be worn multiple ways. As always, I encourage my brides and maids to stay true to their personal style and add in trends for an extra pop of fun.”
