in perfect harmony
WITH TOWERING CASTLES TEEMING WITH HISTORY and museums filled with artful treasures, it’s easy to see why Doylestown is known for its cultural character. Add diverse dining and boutique shopping, and Doylestown is a definite destination location where it’s as exciting to visit, as it is to stay for a lifetime. And then there is the music—the soundtrack to our borough. These sounds resonate from local bars, restaurants, and music venues. We take it all in—our choreographed movements becoming the effortless daily dance that is Doylestown.
Outdoor music begins this summer with lunch breaks on the courthouse lawn. Grab takeout from a favorite local eatery for Brown Bag It with the Arts on Wednesdays at noon, hosted by The Central Bucks Chamber of Commerce. Once the work week is over, celebrate with happy hour at Puck, where you can hear talented singer-songwriters performing on the patio. The Sounds of the Summer Concert Series returns in full swing—a fun, free night for the family in Chapman and Central parks. Streets are filled with music during the Doylestown at Dusk Car Show, and bands perform throughout the Doylestown Arts Festival as shoppers peruse the booths and the Thompson Bucks County Classic loops impressively around town. The James A. Michener Art Museum knows so well that art isn’t just something to view —you can hear it too, as they host their monthly music series. You don’t have to just listen, you can interact with music directly. Sing your heart out at open-mic nights at Maxwell’s on Main and Villa Capri, let your child unleash their inner rockstar at the School of Rock, or stop by SoundStageDirect and be a DJ for a day while you test the latest turntables. From country to classical, beach party to bluegrass, there is a sound for everyone in Doylestown. All you have to do is listen for it. the fig® doylestown team,
Hannah Larkin, Shani Tucker, Jena Miller, Theresa Yerger, Amy Hynes, Mike Miville, Janine Carroll, LisaBeth Weber, Deborah Brandt, Angus, Kate Walker, & Josh Seibert.

There is something for everyone—from soulful jazz, Broadway melodies and modern dance, to gospel music and opera. The Museum is the place to enjoy the performing and visual arts all in one visit. The series, which runs from May 17 through September 20, will feature Saturday Jazz Nights, Sunday Afternoon Concerts, and A Little Night Music on Wednesdays. New names and artists will join some of the legendary mainstays in the Edgar N. Putman Event Pavilion.
There is lots of excitement at the Museum this summer, beginning with the exhibition Out of the World: Works by Steve Tobin. Tobin’s sculptures and other works, on exhibition from June 28 through October 26, will dominate the space in the Martin Wing and outdoor gardens. These works will also be the inspiration for two contemporary dance concerts. Opening August 23 through December 7, the Commonwealth and Pfundt Galleries will host an extraordinary photography exhibition, Wendy Paton: Nuit Blanche. Paton, an award-winning fine art photographer, is internationally known for her contemporary vision of portraits. The exhibition will feature two bodies of work— a premiere selection of her Visages de Nuit, and a compilation of her latest series, Reclaiming Dignity. If you are visiting Doylestown or if you call Doylestown your home, join us for an “Out of This World” and unforgettable experience in art, music, and dance.

a doylestown AH , S U M M E R . F I N A L LY. .. Time to take in the town, walk around, stop and smell the flowers, and enjoy the sunshine. It’s great to wander about and see so many merchants with their doors open and their snow shovels safely tucked away for a while. Music abounds in the summer in Doylestown, with plenty of options for live entertainment, including the great outdoors on the Puck patio, and the ever-popular venue upstairs at Maxwell’s on Main (affectionately called MOM’s by loving locals). How about taking the family on a picnic to the borough’s summer concerts at Chapman Park and Central Park, or the Wednesday afternoon Brown Bag it with the Arts performances on the grass outside the Courthouse? Add in the summer series at the Michener Art Museum (free with museum admission), and you’ve got the trifecta of live music choices, right in the heart of town.
There are plenty of places and spaces to create music yourself, with schools and performing arts centers galore, where kids of all ages can learn or relearn how to play instruments and sing to their heart’s content. There are even some hidden musical treasures. For instance, did you know that you can get brand new vinyl records and turntables of all types right in Doylestown? Seth Frank from SoundStageDirect has been in the borough for 10 years, and loves when locals visit the listening room. “People are amazed when they come in,” he says. “We like teaching about what’s happening with vinyl these days. Sometimes parents bring their kids, since so many have never heard analog music before—much less seen a turntable!” The sounds of Doylestown speak to every age, whether it’s from a vinyl record or a live ensemble in the park. And there you have it. Doylestown in the summer. A splendid place to play, in more ways than one. What kind of summer fun are you having in Doylestown? “Being at Random House was paradise. There were stacks of books everywhere. It was like being in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.”
authentic violet kupersmith A YOUNG WRITER, GHOSTLY TALES, AND A DREAM COME TRUE Imagine this. You write short stories for your college senior thesis. Your writing professor and mentor Valerie Martin sends them to literary agent Molly Frederich. Molly sends them to big-time editor, Cindy Spiegel (editor of The Kite Runner, The Color of Water, A Whole New Mind ). And at 22 years old, you land a two-book deal at Spiegel & Grau, a division of Random House. That’s the short version of what happened to Doylestown resident Violet Kupersmith, three weeks before leaving on a year-long Fulbright to Vietnam.
10 figdoylestown.com
Inspired by her Vietnamese grandmother’s ghost stories, Violet weaves tales written with the depth and breadth of a writer seemingly twice or thrice her age. The Frangipani Hotel is the result—a beautifully crafted debut, as described by editor Cindy Spiegel. “I hadn’t come across a fresh literary voice that excited me in far too long,” she says. “I’m always looking for fiction that takes readers somewhere new. Violet resurrects the literary ghost story, and takes it in a new direction with her spooky and contemporary collection, and a new frame through which to understand the Vietnam War. It’s hard to believe Violet began writing these stories in college. When Molly shared them with me, I jumped at the chance
to publish an enormous talent at such an early stage in her career.”
Violet adds, “Being at Random House was paradise. There were stacks of books everywhere. It was like being in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.” Her love of writing may have actually been inspired at an early age; Violet’s father is the Library Director at DelVal College, and carried her around in a basket to libraries when she was a baby. Now Violet is heading back to Vietnam to write her second book. Whether near or far, we’re happy for her, and especially thankful for Valerie, Molly, and Cindy too. Find the The Frangipani Hotel at the Doylestown Bookshop.

Next year, the organization will celebrate 25 years of bringing beautification programs to residents, businesses, and visitors alike, uniting them in their appreciation for the distinctive beauty of the bucolic Bucks environment. Simultaneously, Bucks Beautiful provides horticultural enhancement and educational programs, such as garden competitions and planting initiatives, like the Bulbs for Bucks daffodils that
bloom across the county each spring, along roadsides and public places. Bucks Beautiful is also planting the seeds of continued economic development in towns across the county, cultivating a keen sense of community pride by involving residents, business owners, school children and community leaders to become part of the process to beautify gateways to our communities and throughout our neighborhoods with a parade of lush plants and blooming flowers. A BEAUTIFUL SHOP ON THE SOUTH SIDE. If you want to walk into a store where the world behind you disappears and you’re whisked away to a place you’ve daydreamed about, c’mon down the hill to the whimsical, warm, and welcoming Heather Bleu Home, brought to you by Tara Klinges and Nick Van Valkenburgh. Heather Bleu is a delightful array of clothing, accessories, gifts, home décor, and treasures you won’t find anywhere else, from American made to European flair. With windowed walls of light, eclectic merchandise and an inspired aesthetic, it feels more like you’re walking into an open-air marketplace, beautifully detailed with love and great taste.
When Tara and Nick met and realized they shared a passion for antiquing, flea markets, and yard sales, their dream began to take shape. With combined backgrounds from house painting to visual merchandising for Anthropologie, their journey brought them together both in marriage and as owners of the destination shop on the south end of town. The atmosphere and modest prices are a big part of it. There’s a feeling when you walk through the door. You’ll see. “I’m like a kid,” Tara says. “I’m so over the moon excited about everything we carry. The store has surpassed my wildest dreams and the people are a big reason. The well
of goodness in the community is another reminder of why I chose Doylestown as my home.” Tara and Nick believe in giving back and making shopping mean more. Each month, they host a social gathering for a cause, and ten percent of the event’s proceeds go to charity.
Tara and Nick’s goal was for customers to walk into a place that is a respite from the outside world. They can check that one off the list. Visit Heather Bleu Home to explore their eclectic collection, now featuring Sherry Tinsman’s jewelry.

giving back joann maroney A GIVER OF CHARITY ON A CORNER OF CLARITY When it comes to JoAnn Maroney, there’s something about four-leaf clovers. She kept finding them around labyrinths, and knew it meant something. That something turned into the huge project of building a labyrinth in Doylestown. With a stellar committee, research, planning, fundraising, the support of the Michener Art Museum, and designer Connie Fenty, JoAnn turned a field of grass into a peaceful place for anyone and everyone to contemplate, meditate, or simply sit and enjoy, at the corner of Pine and East Ashland.
The story of JoAnn and the four-leaf clovers goes deep; her adopted daughter was tragically
26 figdoylestown.com
murdered at age 24. Years later, JoAnn found her first four-leaf clover just as she was looking for a sign from above. After that, she kept finding them, and understood it to mean that somehow her daughter was okay. To JoAnn, the labyrinth represents an analogy for life’s journeys, with all the twists and turns that eventually lead to the center, where you can find clarity. JoAnn was a realtor for 30 years, and a teacher and fitness instructor before that. She’s now semi-retired and busier than ever. She’s volunteered with the Doylestown Business and Community Alliance, the Michener Art Museum, the YMCA, the Doylestown Food
Co-op, the Doylestown Democrats, and, oh yeah, she donates blood regularly. While raising her four children, JoAnn was involved with CISV (Children’s International Summer Village) and the Fresh Air Program in Bucks County.
JoAnn plans on getting more involved with the anti gun-violence movement, Pearl S. Buck International, and Welcome House since that is what brought the Maroneys here 35 years ago. For now, she focuses on practicing random acts of kindness, noting, “That’s something we can all do to make this world a better place.” We couldn’t agree more.

sconset f lair boutique WHEN CHRISTIE made the decision to leave
Nantucket and her shop of 17 years, she knew exactly where she would land. Right smack dab in the heart of Doylestown, and we’re happy to welcome her. You might ask, how does one go from Nantucket to Doylestown? “Easy,” says Christie. She was ready for a change, and when she came here to visit friends, it felt like home. That fit perfectly with opening her new shop on the alley at 52 East State Street, Sconset Flair Boutique—named for a little village on Nantucket. Christie’s creative and colorful collection of home décor, jewelry, clothing, and handbags is not only inviting to all who enter, but very affordable as well. Not to mention, customers are often greeted by her two adorable dogs, Alfie and Ivy.
“I want people to feel at home when they come in,” Christie says. “I like greeting everyone and letting them enjoy the shopping experience, whether they’re buying or simply browsing. My shop is about simple, affordable chic with the island aesthetic, and it’s important that my clientele knows that they can have quality without a high price.”
“I want people to feel at home when they come in. I like greeting everyone and letting them enjoy the shopping experience, whether they’re buying or simply browsing.”
Christie wanted to bring in a little bit of Nantucket, but yet mesh it with Doylestown. “To me, it’s about having a ‘relaxed quality’ where everyone can find something special,” she says. Check out the stylish vegan handbags under $50, whimsical decorative signs, or Christie’s own line of handmade jewelry. Her collection reflects an effortless chic, inspired philosophy, with a world-traveler look, funky linen tunics, flowing scarves, beautiful Nantucket baskets, and timeless fashions. With four comfy chairs, two adorable dogs, and an inspired selection, Sconset Flair is all about hospitality within the cozy and comfortable shopping experience. So c’mon by for a visit, stay a while, and welcome home.

BIKRAM YOGA DOYLESTOWN. FEEL THE HEAT. It’s been a busy year for Molly Mitnick and her family. A week before her baby was due, she received a call from her sister Jennifer Davey, asking if she wanted to open a yoga studio together. The answer was a resounding, “Yes! But can we wait a few months?” Skip ahead and Bikram Yoga Doylestown was born, not long after the baby, and word is spreading fast.
Bikram Yoga is based on 26 postures in a room heated to 105 degrees. “The benefits are many,” says Molly. “It’s restorative, so it’s good for healing injuries. It increases circulation, helps alleviate depression, brings peace of mind, tones the body, and increases flexibility and range of motion.”
Bikram is a great practice for men and women alike. Mike Markowitz (owner of Hickory Kitchen) is a big fan. “My New Year’s resolution was to find a place where a novice male could do yoga. I was hooked after the first session,” he says. “Molly and all of the instructors are wonderful at explaining, teaching, helping, and nurturing, whether it’s your first class or you’re very experienced. They go out of their way to provide a comfortable and welcoming place for everyone. It’s rejuvenating and you’re challenging your ability to improve each time you do the postures. As a beginner, I’ve already seen a lot of benefits.”
When it came to locations, Molly was immediately drawn to Doylestown. “Coming from West Philly, where we walked everywhere and knew our neighbors, my husband and I were excited to find a small town like this,” she says. “It’s a real community here.” With a vision of creating a culture of family, a place to unwind, relax, and feel like you’re going home, Bikram Yoga Doylestown is a warm environment, even beyond the heat. Ask about the special Introductory Offer: One week of unlimited classes for just $20!
