i have always loved the holidays. I am attracted to

the drama of the season with all its glittery amplified beauty. Each year, entering Longwood Christmas is like opening the wardrobe to Narnia and walking into another world. My memories are etched and visceral. I can feel the warmth of a hot toddy in my gloved hands, strolling through the lines of illuminated trees. The open-air theatre fountains, cast in greens and reds, dance to classical music and excite the crowds. During the Historic Kennett Square Parade, I can see the look of quiet wonder on my youngest child’s face, perched up on shoulders watching festive tractors decorated with reindeer and twinkling lights. The children hum with excitement as they wait for Santa to light the tree in the center of town. Kennett Square is steeped in tradition, coupled with style and good taste. Making one’s way down the streets of Historic Kennett Square you can find the best of everything: the best coffee, the best pies, beautiful shoes, and the most unique gifts. So I invite you to stroll and shop the quaint stores, visit Longwood Gardens, go to Winterfest for cold beer and warm food, and experience the good will. Make Kennett Square your home for the Holidays. With appreciation and admiration, Allison Snavely-Villano Meet the entire creative & talented team that makes Fig Kennett possible at figkennett.com.

Linda Thies, owner of Kennett Square Jewelers

AU T H E N T I C : Linda Thies linda thies is a familiar face in kennett square. The friendly

jeweler has been a foundational part of the local community for 27 years. As the owner of Kennett Square Jewelers, president of the Merchant Association, and longtime supporter of downtown businesses, Linda’s experience is the real gem. “I’m working on trying to get the merchants to work with Historic Kennett Square and the Borough to accomplish a lot of goals that we all have to keep Kennett unique,” she says. Linda admits that everybody works together well, pausing briefly to help a 8 figkennett.com

customer who comes into her store to have a watch battery replaced. “I was just at the marketing meeting and met with Longwood and everything is just really becoming a nice cohesive group to work with; I’m really pleased with all of that.” Before she opened Kennett Square Jewelers, Linda worked as a researcher at a publishing company. “I loved it. I still do research to this day. I question everything,” she says with a laugh. It was there where she took an interest in jewelry. “I started from the antique end of it. As I grew, I took the GIA courses, and here I am,” she explains. She also gained experience working for a jeweler in

Center City Philadelphia for five years before opening her store. Kennett Square Jewelers is a full-service jewelry store—selling new, vintage and heirloom pieces, doing appraisals, cleaning, repairs, and custom designs. She’s found one of the secrets to longterm success is mixing the old with the new so there’s a little variety. “I try and keep interest through being diverse, and I’ve got wonderful customers and great employees.” Sounds like a winning business model and a strategy to keep Kennett a local treasure! Visit Linda at her store on West State Street this holiday season.

Connoisseur Travel live up to their company’s name. Connoisseur Travel’s newest location in Kennett Square is the perfect place—at home in a community of down-to-earth and sophisticated residents who appreciate personalized service. Connoisseur’s corporate and leisure specialists are dedicated to knowing their customers and the places they want to travel—emphasizing insider access and in-depth knowledge of the most spectacular places in the world. This expert knowledge has helped build longterm client relationships, even over many generations of families. “Agents are afforded the opportunity to

travel, especially on the leisure side. That’s really important for specialization,” says Senior Vice President and COO, Eric Reader. One of those specialized agents is Jackie Rush—a three-time winner of Travel and Leisure’s A-List award. Her prestigious 2015 win acknowledged her expertise and experience with African safaris. A travel agent with 38 years of experience and 20 years of living locally, she’s a lively and friendly woman with a sparkle in her eyes. Her stories could entertain for hours and her sharp wit—along with one very funny story about a hippo in a bathtub— is what makes Connoisseur special. “I’ve been so lucky in my life. They sent me to those places to bring information back for our treasured clients and friends.

You have to see what you’re selling people with your own eyes,” she says. Senior Vice President Kurt Crowl adds, “People choose us because we are independent, they’re not a number, and we really focus on the relationships.” Those relationships include industry connections as well. “As soon as I got to know Connoisseur Travel, I knew that Kennett would be a perfect fit. We are not a faceless company, and take great pride in our high-touch level of service to both our corporate and leisure travelers,” says Kennett resident and Corporate Travel Specialist, Nancy Costanzo. As sisters, we never expected to face cancer together, but that’s what happened when we were diagnosed with ovarian cancer, one right after the other. That’s a kind of sisterhood all its own .”

“ I love the small town feel, the sense of community, sense of belonging.” G I V I N G B AC K : L y n n S i n c l a i r you can learn what’s historic about Kennett Square at

kennettsquarehistory.org—or you can just ask local Lynn Sinclair. Her family has deep roots in Kennett, dating back to when her ancestor Samuel Sinclair settled here. “Samuel came to Kennett Square in 1794 as a magistrate, a justice of the peace, and the Sinclairs have been here ever since,” she says, seated on the porch outside the borough office. Lynn was born at Chester County Hospital, lived here until she was two, and returned ten years ago to open Sinclair’s Sunrise Café & Tea Room. On her days off, she goes digging through the historical society archives and the recorder of deeds office—researching homes in the National Historical District. Recently she completed fifteen plaques and they will be hung outside historical homes and businesses.

Lynn is also imagining the future, helping to keep Kennett historic and tell the stories of those who came before her. She’s also started an Excellence in History Scholarship at the high school. “I love the small town feel, the sense of community, sense of belonging,” she says.

the constellation network

is a nonprofit organization committed to serving the common good by collaborating with a network of people and local organizations to accelerate high impact initiatives and incubate new ideas that will bring restoration to Southern Chester County through various channels of culture. As of July 2015, Pennsylvania Act 153 requires comprehensive criminal and child abuse background checks for all volunteers who work with children. It’s a big effort to ensure that all children are with safe adult volunteers, but the process of getting cleared can be time36 theconstellationnetwork.com

consuming and difficult. The Constellation Network is collaborating with the YMCA of Greater Brandywine to help alleviate this burden and prevent the loss of volunteers to schools and non-profit organizations where fingerprinting is required in order to serve. To reduce barriers for volunteers and organizations, The Constellation Network has purchased a fingerprinting machine that the Kennett branch of the YMCA of Greater Brandywine will host and staff. The local access to this service makes it easier for new volunteers to get started and for current volunteers to continue giving back to the community.

SOCIAL M I S S ION

At Fig, we believe in the power of a community that works together to identify needs and find solutions—one that creates community connections and is passionate about helping its neighbors. We believe in the mission of the United Way of Southern Chester County—our 2015 Social Mission Partner. Please consider giving to them with your dollars and your time this holiday season.

Live here? Give here. Stays here. It is more worthwhile to teach someone to fish than just give them a fish. That’s a proverb that United Way of Southern Chester County believes in. We fund vital local programs that teach people skills that will transition them to financial independence.

1 2

This may mean teaching people to hone their English speaking and writing skills or counseling them on how to dress and promote themselves at a job interview to secure a new or better job. United Way of Southern Chester County runs a one-onone mentoring program to teach home budgeting to families struggling to manage their monthly finances. We also fund mentoring programs for youth, which successfully lead them to seeking higher education and a stronger financial future. All these funded programs teach skills to help people discover the path to a stronger independent future for themselves and their families.

Together we can do so much more. Visit unitedwayscc.org to make a donation today! 1) Ingrid Lis, manager at Wings for Success, and Carrie Freeman, United Way’s CEO, check out some of the interview and work clothes available to clients seeking jobs.
