the art + culture issue Fig® is proud
to celebrate special places that exemplify pillars of arts and culture, education, dining, shopping, history, and community. We are delighted by the enthusiastic response to our premiere issue in Kennett Square and want to thank you for believing in small independent businesses and how they enrich our lives. We love being a part of the Kennett community, and are excited to introduce our second issue, which celebrates the best of arts & culture in and around Kennett Square. As springtime unfolds in Kennett, the arts are in full bloom. With the snow melting and trees beginning to bud once more, there’s much to look forward to—the Kennett Square Farmers Market (and its live music offerings), Longwood Gardens’ rich tapestry of arts and cultural events, First Friday Art Stroll, and April’s Evening of the Arts, and Art on the Square. Kennett is steeped in the arts, and in this issue we are celebrating all things creative and inspiring. Stroll the art galleries in Kennett Square, or find your inner artist during a class in drawing and painting at Studio Rilievo. Dive into the performing arts with Kennett’s very own KATS (Kennett Amateur Theatrical Society). Listen to live music at the Kennett Flash, or stop by the Flickerwood Wine Tasting Room, where wine is served with a side of rock ‘n roll. Music abounds in Kennett, whether you catch one of the performers at the Market at Liberty Place or in a cozy bar at the Kennett Square Inn. To top it off, Kennett has its very own symphony. Make plans to treat yourself to some of the best musical talent the region has to offer. For a small town, Kennett Square is an artistic and cultural gem. Come listen, learn, participate, and support the arts in and around Kennett Square this springtime. You won’t be disappointed.

eatery and remained as such “for years,” said Steve, before the Kennett Square restaurant scene began to diversify. “The town has changed in the right direction,” said Steve, “and we’re still here hanging out at the corner, serving the weary traveler; a good local watering hole.”
Originally founded in 1835, the Kennett Inn was renovated as The Green Gate Tea Room (“a shot and beer joint”) in the era of Prohibition. When Steve purchased the Inn in 1976, he put great care into restoring the building to preserve its history. With a formal dining room and colonial tavern, The Kennett Square Inn became the town’s main
Steve and his wife, Betsy, support both their community and the local arts, and were instrumental in the start of the Kennett Amateur Theatrical Society (KATS), which was created to stage British-style pantomime performances. murder mystery during Kennett Square’s First Friday Art Stroll in the summer. “You’ve got to give back,” said Steve. “The community supports us, and we support them—we have to work together.” Steve is proud that the Kennett Square Inn’s chef, Alfred Jackson, works in Kennett Square High School’s After the Bell program, teaching cooking classes to kids who remain after standard school hours. “The program teaches a trade, and lets kids meet other people in their community,” said Steve. “In Kennett Square, we watch our own. We can’t take care of the whole world, but we can take care of our little world here.”

“ We are not bashful about our beauty. We strive to deliver a place where people can come, create, and set aside all other aspects of their lives.”
Known as one of the world’s great gardens, Longwood Gardens is both a true cultural gem and, in the words of Director Paul Redman, a world apart from all others. “We are not bashful about our beauty,” said Paul. “We strive to deliver a place where people can come, create, and set aside all other aspects of their lives.” Founded by Pierre S. du Pont in 1906, Longwood Gardens features more than 1,000 acres, including a vast conservatory, fountains, the historic Peirce-du Pont House, and a wealth of performances, exhibits, and educational programs. Paul attributes the success of Longwood Gardens to a strong commitment to their vision and to the people behind the place. “It has really been about unleashing the amazing and innovative talent and staff of Longwood Gardens,” Paul said. “It’s our mission to do what we do with the highest quality possible, thoughtfully, and with excellence.” “We want to be the most friendly, welcoming place there is. Every guest at Longwood Gardens should feel like the only guest,” said Paul. “Our community and guests have very high expectations, and we want to meet and exceed those expectations.” Paul Redman has been the Director of Longwood Gardens since 2006 and appreciates the “vibrant” Kennett community. “I definitely enjoy all of the offerings here,” said Paul, speaking of Kennett’s “exceptional dining, entertainment, and attractions.”

With the reopening of Longwood's Meadow Garden in 2014, we are excited to see the newest project come into full bloom and add to the beauty that surrounds Kennett Square. The expansion is said to grow the Meadow from 40 to 86 acres, and will include additional open fields of native flowers and grasses, trails, wetlands, a birding outlook, learning pavilions, the historic Webb Farmhouse and galleries, with additional seating throughout.

THE ARTS in KENNETT SQUARE ARTS & CULTURE
abound in Kennett Square. It’s part of the charm that gives Kennett its character. Every coffee shop, restaurant, boutique, and market wears more than one hat, doubling in the evenings as music venues and pop-up gallery spaces. Parades and festivals fill the streets, showcasing local dance troupes and multicultural organizations. You can always find someone with their nose tucked in a book, hopping from one reading to the next at downtown bookshops. Local youth programs promote music and art as an important outlet for expression and community engagement. And the First Friday of every month, it all comes together for Arts Stroll— one night a month where we gather to celebrate the local artists,

musicians, venues, and galleries that make Kennett Square a special place to be. This passion for the arts can be found throughout the town’s history, tracing back to 1906 with Pierre du Pont—the founder of Longwood Gardens, now famed for its beauty and decadence. Then, 1940 marked the birth of the Kennett Symphony of Chester County, which brought with it a rich musical tradition. To this day it stands as Pennsylvania's only professional symphony orchestra. Moving forward in history, in 2001 The Kennett Amateur Theatrical Society came to life as a place where adult amateur actors, singers, and musicians could come together and participate first-hand in the arts. Now their signature British pantomime performance is a
community tradition. Our history, rich in art and culture, led us to where we are today. It made us a community that embraces and celebrates the arts. In the following pages we pay tribute to the local artists and organizations that enrich Kennett Square every day. Please be sure to join us at our annual spring fundraiser, Evening of the Arts, on Friday, April 4th. Claire Murray, Historic Kennett Square Kennett Square is the place to be for art this spring! TALULA'S PICKS A perfect Kennett Square picnic from Fig® Foodie & restaurateur Aimee Olexy. Check out Aimee's HOMEMADE HUMMUS and TABBOULEH recipes on her blog at figkennett.com kennett square just gleams with picturesque picnic
opportunities. And no better time than the Spring. (But be advised you can make this happen year round in our region with ease and glory.) I follow these four mottos in my picnic productions: make it sweet, savory, healthy, and scrumptious all at once. Let it lead to romance, cartwheels, a sunglow, or just pure content. Here are my 10 tips and a cute idea that pays tribute to our wonderful regional food.
1. Pick a sneaky location and check the weather. Live on the edge—go to the Brandywine River near Lenape!
2. Get your tools. You need an awesome basket and blanket. Try vintage from Scout and Annie or preppy chic from the always-fabulous Vignette. 3. Plan your menu... Think local, seasonal, and market fresh! 4. Cue up some tunes matching the occasion. (Advice: King Harvest, Dancing in the Moonlight) 5. Head over to Va La Vineyard for a wine pairing. Ask for Karen or Anthony for personal winemaker advice. This is a rare treat! 6. Grab a handful of snapdragons from Barnard's Orchard to decorate your spot upon arrival.
7. Leave no footprint. Take all of your rubbish and keep it green. 8. Pick up some mushrooms at the Mushroom Cap and a sweet card for your companion(s) at the Eco Boutique. 9. Hit the Friday Kennett Market or the Market at Liberty Place for your fresh, seasonal needs. 10. Come see us at Talula's Table for ingredients galore. We'll stock you up on glorious local cheese, handmade sweets, a fresh baguette, salami, and anything your heart desires.

Pausing from her concentration she looks up—pink bandana tied tight across her head, wide eyes peering through rectangular-rimmed glasses. “It’s for a girlfriend of mine who’s pregnant,” states Carrie Buller. “She saw my artwork online and asked if I’d be willing to paint something for her and her child.” The image of a bed began to take shape as a light-hearted conversation ensued about the number of monkeys jumping on the bed in the popular nursery rhyme. FRESH FACE a dream realized Cristobal and Mariana Castañeda want to spread the word that the American Dream is still alive and within reach—that is, if you work hard enough for it. Which is something they've been doing since they immigrated from Puebla, Mexico, more than thirty years ago. Together, they spent the next twenty years in Kennett’s famed mushroom industry. But as much as Mariana was lauded for her hard work and dedication, she became even more well known in the neighborhood for her skills in the kitchen. Inspired by encouraging words from friends and supporters, Mariana and Cristobal made the move to the Farmers Market of West Grove, where they sold their freshly made salsas and guacamole. Fellow vendors tried their products and encouraged them to expand; loyal customers returned faithfully every week to satisfy their cravings. It seemed that in no time at all the duo went from humble, home-kitchen cooks to Farmers Market celebrities. Soon, their small home was overflowing with fresh avocados and tomatoes.
Cristobal & Mariana Castañeda Owners, Taste of Puebla
201 Birch Street, Kennett Square 610.444.5085
Eventually their journey led them to where they are now, with the opening of their new restaurant, Taste of Puebla. Cristobal and Mariana bring authentic cuisine straight from the heart of Puebla to Kennett Square. Their goal is to showcase the true Mexican style of cooking. With Mariana in the kitchen, we're assured that every dish is as rich in tradition as it is in flavor. So stop by and enjoy her signature dish, Mole Poblano, straight to your plate all the way from Puebla.

“We love working in communities and coming face to face with our clients.” West Chester: 127 North High Street 610.738.7150 artisticeyewear.com
Artistic Eyewear has the feel of a gallery with bright, original art, while natural light and trendy music create an inviting shopping experience. “We fell in love with our clients in the local community,” says owner Robert Layman. Artistic Eyewear provides a look and a price to fit the diversity of each individual who walks through their door. Their collection includes designer brands like Oliver Peoples and Paul Smith, Ray-Ban sunglasses, and an array of boutique eyewear from Europe. Robert credits his talented team, including Holly, Erica, and Tara, for their great care with clientele. Convenience is paramount, too, since Artistic Eyewear edges lenses onsite to expedite delivery, and patrons are invited to bring frames home to test their new look. A well-established family business, Artistic Eyewear was founded by Robert’s mother, Terry, 25 years ago in Israel. Now celebrating the 10th anniversary of their Doylestown store, Artistic Eyewear has expanded into the heart of West Chester, and they couldn’t be happier to be there. The Layman family believes in giving back, and each year Artistic Eyewear collects outdated frames to supply to Haiti and South America. Expect to see community involvement from them as well: Robert has plans to participate in local events, and will soon hold exhibit space for artists. Robert’s girlfriend, Holly, contributes her artistic vision with original art installations and specialty window design. Doylestown: 10 South Main Street 215.340.1725
