remembering robert smith

Lancaster artist Bob Smith passed away this past July. He was known by many as a true artist. His great passion was making art, looking at art, and being in the company of other artists. Although he had no formal training, he had an encyclopedic knowledge of color relationships and art history, and he generously shared what he knew with anyone who needed his assistance. Bob will be missed by the Lancaster art community.

Thank you to our editorial sponsor, the High® Companies. Committed to community leadership, sustainable building and business practices, and advancement through the preservation of local heritage.

great art is defined by layers. Paint is

layered on canvas, creating depth and tricking the eye. Dancers swirl across the stage in layered movements that come together in awe-inspiring unison. Instruments harmoniously work together to create brilliant sounds. The same is true for our city; Lancaster is a city filled with cultural layers that come together to give us an artful diversity that can be seen, heard, touched, and tasted. At Moxie House, we laud the artistic acrobats who keep Lancaster full of colorful life. We savor the flavors of culinary creatives as they tempt and tease our palates. And we dance to the music of our city, a glorious symphony made up of singers and songwriters, and genres galore. In Fig®, we bring together these cultural layers. So turn the page, read on, and discover your next inspiration.

Plié. Relevé. Pointed toes and graceful arms wisp through the air. Ballet is an intricate art with a delicate appearance on stage, but an intense focus behind the curtains. These movements combined with elements of Pilates and yoga are sweeping the nation in the form of barre fitness classes. Marie Cleaves Rothacker knows them well. At 6 years old, Marie decided she would pursue ballet. Ardently dedicating herself to the art form, she trained professionally at the highest level, but retired from ballet at a young age. She continues to perform other dance styles, teach, and choreograph locally. While training, Pilates both strengthened her body and helped with rehabilitation, so becoming a Pilates teacher was a natural next step. Combining the benefits of both forms along with yoga-based stretches, Marie developed her own brand of barre fitness in Lancaster, coining herself “Move It with Marie.”

Now she will open Move It Studio, a barre studio and movement gallery. The barre studio will be the first of its kind in Lancaster County, offering barre fitness and Pilates classes. Focusing on the artistic aspect of dance, the movement gallery will provide a space to integrate dance into the local arts scene through First Friday events, classes, workshops, and as a rehearsal space rental for dance companies. Marie shares, “I want to provide a dynamic space for people to experience both the fitness and artistic aspects of dance.” For Marie, there is power in movement. “I don’t feel alive if I’m not moving regularly. Movement is transformative. Intentionally moving every day feeds your soul.” We couldn’t agree more. And we can’t wait to move it with you, Marie. Visit moveitstudio.com for class offerings or email marie@moveitstudio.com for more information.

kathleen peck Take a walk in the city. Start at the historic brick-faced Lancaster Central Market. Turn onto Prince Street and walk past Lancaster’s famous theatre and cafés, then through artful Gallery Row. Head to Queen Street to explore the eclectic 300 block. And through every street, around every turn, you’ll notice beautiful hanging baskets dangling from pedestrian lampposts, overflowing with blooming begonias. This beautification project is the brainchild of LEADS— standing for Lancaster Economic Action for Downtown Success. Kathleen Peck has been donating her time to LEADS for the past eight years, and for the past four years as president of the organization. She shares with us: “Our mission is to support the economic vitality of Downtown Lancaster through beautification initiatives that will attract visitors and residents. The flowers encourage people to walk along our streets, and therefore walk past our wonderful shops and restaurants.” Kathleen has a wonderful shop of her own on the corner of Walnut and Charlotte streets. For the past 35 years, “Kathleen’s” has been beautifying women of Lancaster, dressing them in fine fashion. This eye for aesthetics has translated into her work with LEADS, as she now dresses the city for the summer and for the holiday season. Last year, in a valuable partnership with the City Parks Department, Kathleen and her team brought the first live tree into Lancaster Square, which was donated from a local resident’s backyard. You can look forward to new things every year as she is working towards making each season more beautiful than the last—creating a committee that is developing a plan to make Lancaster truly sparkle during the holiday season. “I feel fortunate that I can be a part of LEADS and help contribute to this thriving city. LEADS is truly a hands-on group. We hang the baskets and we take them down. We envision and fluff the holiday decorations and hang the lights. We’re an all volunteer-run organization; there is a tremendous spirit in the individuals who help us,” Kathleen says. And we can thank Kathleen and LEADS for sharing that spirit with our city. Support LEADS holiday decorations by purchasing a commemorative Landmark Ornament (be on the lookout for this next historic ornament in November). Then sponsor a beautiful hanging basket next spring for $85. Find more information at lancasterleads.org.

Sponsor of Fig® Authentic and supporter of the LEADS initiatives, patti s. spencer, esq., of spencer law firm in Lancaster, focuses on estate planning, tax controversies, expert witness work, and is a nationally recognized author. “Kathleen’s colorful vision helps our city thrive—an effort enjoyed and appreciated by all.” spencerlawfirm.com

Michael Kambouroglos and Pete Alexopoulos outside their brand new location at 1 West James Street.

Don’t worry—they haven’t forgotten about the truck. You can still find Souvlaki Boys on the run around the city!

fresh face:

souvlaki boys

Cousins Pete Alexopoulos and Michael Kambouroglos recently spent some time explaining the meaning of the Greek word philoxenia to us. Its literal translation means “friending strangers,” Michael says. But he continues, “We grew up around food and family. At any event—happy or sad—everyone gets together and eats. Every meal, my grandma would always set an extra setting at the table, just in case someone unexpectedly joined. All are welcome; that’s philoxenia.” It’s that kind of feeling that Pete and Michael want to create as they expand their Lancaster-loved food truck to a fast-casual restaurant, the Souvlaki Boys Grill. Their story started in early 2011, when after graduating college—Pete from Penn State and Mike from the Culinary Institute of America—they had the idea to open a food truck. Inspired by their familial roots and time spent in Greece, the duo wanted to bring street food to the City of Lancaster. “In Greece, that’s what we’d do every night,” Pete remembers fondly. “The toughest choice was whether to eat gyro or crepe.” So starting in 2012, they opened their food truck window

and ever since have been serving Greek cuisine in a way that Lancaster’s never tasted before. They quickly became a household name, known for their gyro—fresh pork cut into slices and stacked on a vertical rotisserie to cook. Each order is shaved off and served in a pita, on a platter, or over rice. At their new restaurant, they serve this fan favorite and have also expanded the menu to feature appetizers and dinner platter options. You can even indulge in dessert. We hear the baklava is delicious and the traditional Greek yogurt with honey drizzled on top is mouth-watering. More than anything, Pete and Michael are sharing their love of Greek food and culture with Lancaster. When you walk into the Souvlaki Boys Grill you might be a stranger to this foreign food, but you’ll be greeted like old friends and treated like family. And trust us, it will only take one bite of gyro for these two Greeks to win over your heart.

saheeb abdus sabur of

dig it!

Saheeb Abdus Sabur is a grower, a cultivator, and an ambassador of the earth. Paying homage to the intricacies and thoughtful purpose of natural life, Saheeb understands that each plant has a distinct goal—from weeds to willowing flowers, to herbs and produce. It is this understanding that moved him to begin gardening for medicinal use. Initially inspired to help heal the sick, Saheeb saw a deficit in the diets of those with crippling diseases, such as HIV/ AIDS. The government-funded meals the ill were receiving through food banks mainly consisted of canned and overprocessed foods. With a true belief that food can heal when consumed naturally, Saheeb aimed to grow produce that was sustainable, organic, and affordable. Through working with various churches and toiling land on different plots, Saheeb began to notice something special about the act of gardening. Not only did their harvest heal certain ailments, but it manifested itself to heal physically healthy individuals on an emotional, spiritual, and familial level—particularly in youth. “There’s a healing energy in the garden,” Saheeb tells us, “You can feel it everywhere.” Seeing this, he founded The Dig It Project for troubled teens caught in the judicial system. Saheeb offers them a place away from the streets in his peaceful garden, and through hard work and education his students learn about the nutritional benefits of sustainable agriculture, grow on an emotional level, and begin to turn their lives around. When their crops are harvested, the teens sell their yield at a roadside produce stand. Saheeb splits the profits among them, so they are able to leave with a little extra money that was earned in a meaningful and lawful way. After losing his son to gang violence in Los Angeles during the early 90s, Saheeb feels more responsible for his students who have found themselves on a troubled path. “They are all my children. I want everyone to know that no man is an island; we are all connected to one another,” he shares as he welcomes students into his farming family. Together they spend their summer days—pulling weeds, using their hands, sharing stories underneath the peach tree, learning to trust one another, speaking honestly, laughing and learning throughout it all. the artists of lancaster An artist’s home is their studio. It’s a creative kitchen where an artist digs their paint-speckled hands into creative sustenance. It’s the place where artful energy flows freely and morphs into greatness through guidance. Art is even better when it’s enjoyed from a seat at your dining room table—as you create memories with friends and family—or from your sofa, as you curl up under a blanket on a cool fall night. Bring creative energy into your own home—whether it’s a painting, sculpture, or pottery. On the following pages, you’ll find the artists of Lancaster and their inspirational creations. Thank you to Charter Homes & Neighborhoods for providing the canvas on which we’ve showcased the artwork of Lancaster, and to Charter interior designer Veronica Search. “Individuals and organizations who anticipate human and technology trends will lead Lancaster going forward. Forward-looking development, ultra-high-speed internet, medical, educational, arts, and live events… I can see all these possibilities converging to inspire us as an entrepreneurial, multi-cultural community.”

THE CITY OF LANCASTER IS A HUB FOR INNOVATIVE AND CREATIVE THINKERS. Every day, small businesses open their doors and open their minds, moving from the conceptualized to the concrete; city organizations act as creative architects, promoting development in unprecedented ways; local leaders invest in the infrastructure of our city and are finding creative ways to stimulate economic growth. We want to know what moves these creative thinkers to act. We asked them, “How does the City of Lancaster motivate your creative process?” They answered… “I think the City of Lancaster and Lancaster County are the best kept secret on the East Coast. There is something magical about this area. Maybe it’s a creative vortex, or maybe it’s the people. Whatever it is, so many artists, designers, musicians, actors, and writers feel creative energy on some visceral level. We have so much talent in the Lancaster area and we inspire each other.”

“I’m certain that my inspiration comes from the Lancastrian’s I interact with because our community sets an elevated bar of creativity each and every day.”

joel walker

president, industrial resolution “Lancaster has an incredible tapestry of culture. It’s a place where the past, the present and the future seem to coexist with a unique harmony. It’s a place built on work-ethic, self-reliance, faith, and creativity. Where people come from roots that champion steadfast commitment, innovation from within, and making the best of what’s around. We’re committed to our little corner of the world and at the Community Foundation, we bring many different kinds of creative minds together to tackle big issues.”

samuel bressi

president, lancaster county community foundation “Lancaster is a city, a community, with an art college at its center. Hundreds of artists at PCA&D are thinking, making, and communicating. Inspiration comes from its history, closeness to nature and, of course, a fellowship of artists and designers who have made it their home.”

mary colleen heil

president, pennsylvania college of art & design Michael Popovsky, performer, teacher, entrepreneur

“The city’s strong historical context is a wonderful catalyst for our work. Architecture of the twentyfirst century should speak to our time, our social context, and the construction technologies of this era. Lancaster provides the opportunity to create a forceful dialogue between new and old.”

wendy tippetts & gary weaver owners, tippetts weaver architects

“We’ve never thought about being anywhere else. Looking out our windows on Grant Street we see a variety of people, pets, and means of transportation so vast we can’t help but be inspired. And all that life reminds us to focus on results that meet the needs of our clients, not just on the cool stuff we can create. We also believe in the democratic process and have a really flat organization where everyone’s input is valued. Ideally, a city is much the same—with lots of viewpoints leading to the best result. We make a point of supporting downtown businesses whenever we can. As a growing operation, we’re always curious about how other gigs get started and what their operations are all about.”

david mcnaughton

fresh face:

Henrietta Heisler You may not have met Henrietta Heisler yet, but you’ve probably noticed her work around the city. Leading the redesign of TMB Fine Clothing’s women’s store and other commercial spaces, Henrietta has made her mark on Lancaster. For TMB, she chose a bright pink color for the walls. She explains, “People feel really exhilarated by reds and hot pinks, so I told Shane and Kaitlin (the owners of TMB), if you are brave enough, we should use hot pink as an accent.” Her purposeful choice was successful, and now TMB’s space is as memorable as it is fashionable.

INTERIORS

Henrietta’s career in design began deeply rooted in fine art. After receiving an education in the arts and humanities she began her career as a painter, but she began to feel something was missing from her life—people. Painting required a silent solitude, but Henrietta’s vibrant personality needed human interaction to feel inspired. It’s this devotion to people that drew her back to school for design, and has become one of her great talents as a professional designer. “There are many great designers but I think what we do best is color, plus we really listen to our clients,” Henrietta says. “We get to know our clients, use our expertise to create a unique space that reflects them. We truly create an extension of each client’s vision.” With her eye for style and commitment to connecting with clients, Henrietta has become renowned for her astute design skills, and now brings it home to Downtown Lancaster. Her new building—217-223 West Walnut Street—once stood as the Wacker Bros. Brewery during the early 1900s. After the brewery closed in 1956, the building fell into disrepair and became an under-utilized space. Henrietta’s keen eye saw its true potential. With great care and attention to detail, Henrietta renovated and revitalized the building. It now stands as home to a yoga studio, and her own design showroom, with a wellness center and brewery to open soon. In her new space, customers will be able to customize and explore her carefully curated collection of fabric, furniture and accessories. If your interior is in need of a design refresh, don’t wait—Henrietta has a vision to share. It’s as she tells us, “Good design is as necessary as food, water, and air. Design is nourishment. It’s both fulfilling and energizing: it will lift you up.” Call Henrietta for residential living spaces, kitchens and baths, commercial and professional office, color consultation. Open by appointment, invitation, or by chance.

Mystery, magic, wonder, excitement. These are the qualities of a great adventure, a well-told story, a beautiful piece of music, and a moment between artist and audience. You wish you could capture it, bottle it and hold it forever. But that is what makes performance so special and one-of-a-kind. Its impermanence makes us turn off our phones, put away our endless lists, and lose ourselves in the joy of being in the moment. With the generous support of Rodgers & Associates as our season partner for a fourth year, we give you more than 80 chances this season to experience the mystery, magic, wonder, and excitement at the Ware Center in Downtown Lancaster and the Winter Center on campus. VOICES

YOUNGER ME

Left to right: Ian Hermanns, Brandt Imhoff, Brent Gregory

making a splash Listening to Younger Me is kind of like driving in a car on a sunny day with the windows down and music blaring. There’s a warm sense of freedom as the wind does with your hair what it pleases. Your arm sits in the windowsill as you tap your hand along to the beat that pulsates through the speakers. It’s these fleeting moments that remind us of the sense of wonder and carefree spirit that we felt as youth. Younger Me recreates these moments, encapsulating them in the span of a four-minute song. Brent Gregory shares about their music, “We write open-ended lyrics about being a child. Everybody has their own childhood memories

and personal experience that can be related in different ways.” Mix those light-hearted lyrics with “happy rock”—as coined by member Brandt Imhoff—and you get Younger Me. Brandt and Brent have been playing music together since their high school days at Red Lion in York. Four years ago they came together to write and record; Brandt on the keyboard and Brent doing vocals. After inviting childhood friend and neighbor Ian Hermanns to play drums, things began to fall into place. “We wanted to make pop music; we relate to Motown and a time when pop was more jammed out, aggressive, unsynthesized and

played with instruments,” Brent reflects. And their latest five-track EP, Coloring Book, is just that. Recorded live, Coloring Book is a collective representation of the band’s personality and style. With catchy riffs reminiscent of traditional pop and a raw quality that only live performance can create, Younger Me sets themselves apart. So go for a drive, play the EP, and take some time and get back to a younger you. Listen to Coloring Book at youngerme.bandcamp.com.

THE ART OF HEALING

tradition in modern medicine After finishing a three-year Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Residency at Stanford University Hospital in 2002, Dr. Tony Ton-That joined Lancaster Neuroscience & Spine Associates, bringing with him a new perspective on modern medicine. With specialties in Electrodiagnostic Medicine and Medical Acupuncture, Physiatrist Dr. Ton-That holds a unique perspective on pain treatment. When a patient enters his office with musculoskeletal or nerve pain in the neck or back, Dr. Ton-That’s first goal is to identify its source through electrodiagnosis. Through a Nerve Conduction Study and EMG, he accurately and precisely diagnoses his patients, helping them move through the healing process—whether their recovery is facilitated by physical therapy, surgery, or Dr. Ton-That’s specialty, acupuncture. As a medical art rooted in cultural tradition, Dr. Ton-That shares his insight, “There are two ways of looking at acupuncture. One is the classical Chinese explanation; this belief is that there are channels of energy running in patterns throughout the body. When you have pain in a certain area, the flow of energy that nourishes the tissue is blocked; the needle unblocks the obstruction, allowing energy to nourish the body. The second way of viewing acupuncture is through modern science. This explanation says that the needling stimulates the brain to release endorphins, which works to relieve pain and helps to subside inflammation.” A treatment gaining significance in the medial realm, The World Health Organization now recognizes the healing power of Medical Acupuncture in many areas, including digestive, respiratory, and neurological disorders. Dr. Ton-That shares, “I’ve recently helped some college-aged students alleviate their migraines, as well as athletes with muscular pain. Acupuncture lessens the medication they have to take, the intensity of their pain, and the frequency of which it occurs.” By combining the art of natural healing with modern medicine, Dr. Ton-That and his associates at Lancaster Neuroscience & Spine promote health and wellness in distinctive and effective ways.

LIFE LIVED FORWARD LIVING IN FULL COLOR Creativity has always been at the heart of Willow Valley Communities’ success. With the opening of The Clubhouse this month, Willow Valley breaks through convention to create something that once again helps reimagine the senior living lifestyle. Every amenity in the 30,000 square-foot building illustrates the spirit of “agelessness” that guides the philosophy of development at Willow Valley. The Clubhouse features a six-lane bowling alley, a vintage arcade and a Sports Center, where pickleball, volleyball, basketball, and badminton can be played. A golf simulator, an outdoor pool and spa, two Har-Tru™ tennis courts and a snack shop round out the downstairs amenities. Upstairs, The Local Table will offer a farm-fresh menu and a full-service bar, with an impressive array of wines selected by Willow Valley Communities’ own sommelier, Chris Trendler. The Clubhouse opens a new world of possibilities, as an intergenerational “hub” for those who live at Willow Valley and their families. “The Clubhouse expresses a feeling of vibrancy,” says John G. Swanson, President of Willow Valley Living. “And vibrancy is compelling—no matter what your age.” Willow Valley Communities— Life Lived Forward. Visit the Willow Valley Communities Welcome Center.
