WHETHER IT’S BY PLANE, TRAIN, OR AUTOMOBILE, traveling home for the holidays can feel a bit frenzied. But once we arrive it’s almost as if all of the chaos—the work emails, the hectic commute, the seemingly meaningless tasks of everyday life—is filtered out to make room for the things that really matter. For this issue, we chose to go back to a simpler time and capture the City of Lancaster as we imagine it. Rewinding to the earlier part of the last century, we picture county-dwellers heading to the glittering lights of the city through the falling snow. Maybe they’re catching a show at the Fulton Opera House, indulging in sweet treats at Miesse Candies, or choosing the perfect ham for holiday dinner at the Lancaster Central Market. The city was a gathering place for loved ones to reunite, reconnect, and experience the magic of the season. It was a special place for special occasions. Fast-forward to 2013, and this is just as true. Despite the smartphones in everyone’s pockets, tradition is alive and well in the City of Lancaster—and the surrounding area. We were thrilled to photograph our editorial feature in the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania. Join us as we step onto the train platform and into a place frozen in time. THE SWEETEST THINGS When Mack Farquhar got into the cupcake business, it wasn’t just to satisfy a sweet tooth. “Connecting with people is very important to us, connecting with the community.” He saw a niche market in cupcakes, found a remarkable baker out of New York City, and successfully developed the brand from there. Even today, the cupcakes that are made at Macklin’s Cafe maintain the integrity of the original baker’s cupcakes, down to the flavor profile and their splendid texture. This is Macklin’s Cafe second location, the first being in York. Mack is enthusiastically embracing the culture in Downtown Lancaster and since opening their doors on First Friday in September, has already welcomed singer-songwriters in to perform. Keep an eye out for more events in the future that will mesh well with the vibrant heartbeat of the downtown area. Although he started out by just selling cupcakes, you’ll now find a coffee and food menu, which includes made-from-scratch soups, sandwiches, salads, and even gluten-free options. When asked what people should know about Macklin’s Cafe, Mack confidently responded by saying the cupcakes speak for themselves. It is important for them to reach out and embrace all of the community around them and be welcoming of all walks of life in Lancaster. “For me, it’s all about the people.” Stop in to try one or several of Macklin’s cupcakes from their rotating menu, grab a cup of coffee, and feel like you’re being welcomed into a friend’s home. a new home for a lancaster city tradition

SWEET FAMILY TRADITIONS When you step inside Miesse Candies, the aroma of chocolate and sugar is intoxicating. The glass display cases are brimming with every confection imaginable: mint patties, peanut butter meltaways, nonpareils, truffles, chocolate-covered marshmallows, and the ever-popular “jets.” For years, Lafayette Street was home to this legendary candy purveyor, but in August, Miesse moved to North Water Street, just behind Gallery Row. The larger space means there is now even more Miesse to love. In a sense, the company, which was founded
in 1875, is getting back to its roots. It was once one of seven or eight candy companies located in Downtown Lancaster, says owner Tracy Artus. The last time Miesse was downtown, however, was the early 1900s. The move was part of Artus’ plan when she bought the confectionery company in 2010. She remembers her mother talking about the bustling downtown of decades ago and wanted Miesse to be a part of its revitalization. While the address may be different, little else has changed, including the recipes, Artus says. Even though she’s added some new items, such as the bestselling sea-salt caramels, she has kept the brand consistent. Miesse still uses
all-natural ingredients, and many are sourced locally, including the special chocolate blend from Wilbur. Even the candy boxes and ribbon are made in Pennsylvania. The candy is still made almost entirely by hand. Of the few machines that are used in the factory, most date back to the 1930s. “We’re sticking with our tried and true traditions,” Artus says. For many Lancastrians, holidays and special occasions just wouldn’t be the same without Miesse’s treats. “It’s all about family traditions,” Artus says. “People still want the tradition of Miesse Candies around their table.”

AARON’S ACRES For a few years, Amy Robertson has volunteered as a “Buddy” during Aaron’s Acres’ Summer Camp program. GAUDENZIA’S VANTAGE Nestled among the busy streets of Downtown Lancaster, a home sits quietly as a humble tribute to the history of the city. You might even walk past it on First Friday, notice its character briefly, and then continue on your journey. But inside Gaudenzia’s Vantage, women are working every day to redirect their journey and overcome their own history of addiction. With 24 beds for women and 21 beds for children, Vantage offers its patients a long-term residential, intensive treatment program.

The women go through a rigorous six-month treatment, which incorporates family therapy and emphasizes hard work and community values. Vantage provides an environment of empowerment, support, and safety, as women work to become clean, productive members of society. This work would not be possible without the unconditional devotion of Florence Paige and Paula Kiernan. Lancaster Division Director Florence “Sam” Paige and Program Director Paula Kiernan share a passion and a belief in their work that is motivating and inspiring. Paula, 32 years in recovery herself, finds inspiration in her patients: “People don’t want to work with women with addiction. But they’re worth it. They’re truly worth it.” Her passion and own recovery act as a beacon of hope for the women of Vantage, as well as for co-worker and friend, Sam. Sam, who has been with Gaudenzia for 21 years, sees the growth of her residents reflected in herself, as she too grows and learns alongside them. “I’ve seen change in myself. Knowing that it works for me, and Paula in her own recovery process, we know that it can work for other people. We believe in it.” Through the Vantage rehabilitation program, Paula and Sam act as pillars of support as they help guide the women on their arduous road to recovery. Just as they are giving back to the women, Paula and Sam encourage the women to give back to the community. Their focus is not only on helping the women become drug-free but also on how they can find meaning through charity. Around the holidays, the women of Vantage volunteer at local nursing homes, caroling and creating shows for the elderly. Sam emphasizes to the women, “In what way are you going to be helpful to someone else?” As they finish treatment and many of the women filter back into the community, they carry with them the lessons they’ve learned at Vantage as they work and volunteer alongside the people of Lancaster.

JAKE LEWIS & THE CLERGY As a kid growing up in Gettysburg, Jake Lewis was surrounded by history—and family. Adopted at birth, he was one of eight adopted children growing up together on their Adams County farm. Now the folk-indie musician has found that family, history, and place inform his craft, from the exploration of personal history in his songwriting to the recording of his latest album, Gossip, in a Prohibition -era cabin in Lititz. “In the last year, I’ve developed a curiosity for history and where I’m from,” Lewis, 26, says. “Some of the songs on the album deal with that—where we came from.” One song in particular, titled “The Country,” investigates this idea in a personal way for Lewis. While on tour with The Clergy, Lewis realized they were close to his birthplace in South Carolina. They made a detour so Lewis could explore the town.

Lewis calls the songwriting of “The Country” that followed a “cataloguing of feelings and emotions.” Each song he writes starts this way—with a feeling. Sometimes a song is born in mere minutes, and sometimes it takes months. The key, he says, is honesty and authenticity, which he learned from reading Brenda Ueland’s book If You Want to Write. Lewis’ sound has also grown, from the quiet acoustic sets he did as a solo musician to the more raucous shows he plays now with The Clergy. He’s recently started a new chapter in his own history as a resident of Lancaster. “I love the crazy, condensed creative community here,” he says. Visit jakelewis.net to listen & learn more.

DR. KRISTINE DZIURZYNSKI, NEUROSURGEON Starting a new job in a new city can be daunting, but Kristine Dziurzynski, MD, FACS, is accustomed to challenges. After all, her specialty is cancer research, focusing specifically on brain tumors. In early September, she brought that expertise to Lancaster as a new neurosurgeon with Lancaster NeuroScience & Spine Associates. A team-centered approach is key, she says, to best serving patients and keeping current on the latest research and treatment options for cancer and neurological disorders.

Originally from Connecticut, Dr. Dziurzynski moved most recently from a practice in Wisconsin. She also has a background in translational research, which takes theoretical lab findings and converts them into real-world applications, like medications or other treatments.
