good thinking WHEN MY OLDEST SON WAS TWO,

his favorite t-shirt, the one that he wore all the time, was covered in chocolate milk spills and thin stains of ketchup. The big yellow letters distorted against his belly read “Big Idea Man.” Most of his big ideas included flooding his room in a well meaning, but poorly executed, attempt to wash our dog, and throwing his thick baby limbs against the French doors in hopes of being freed from the ridiculousness of confines, structure, and safety. He knew and wanted all that was beyond. I love that boy like I love this town. I am attracted to the diversity of people and thoughts, the acceptance of protest, and passion for change, improvement, and growth. In 1993 I came to West Chester University. The corner store was Woolworth and it was closing— increasing the vacancies to nine in a four-block stretch. My roommates and I would make what we perceived to be the long trek from our dorms back to Goshen Hall—after a night out at the Bar and Restaurant or to hear Jazz musicians at Vincent’s, stopping at the 7-Eleven for nachos. In 2003 I pushed a baby stroller, until the tread wore off the wheels, over every brick sidewalk in town, stopping for a hot dog at Wally’s Weiner World and to rest on the Old Courthouse steps. Fast forward to 2015, twenty-two years after my arrival, and we have 525 businesses in Downtown West Chester. West Chester has one of the highest income levels in Pennsylvania and is 55% female. We are on the precipice of another growth spurt with the expansion of housing in the Downtown, the cultivation of community gardens, plans for the Mosteller Building, and boutique hotels with rooftop bars. Now that same “idea” boy with the round belly is becoming a lean teenager filled with assurances, sometimes defiance, and hopefully the ability to make his ideas a reality. I think back on those days of my child hurling his body against our doors, running across the wobbly bridge at Marshall Square Park, and flying down the slides at Everhart Park into puddles of mud and mulch. Best of all, he knew that a wild sense of wonder, fueled by big ideas, could carry him forward— to whatever adventures awaited. Thank you, West Chester, for not being scared to leap and run and grow! On the following pages, meet the innovators who are moving West Chester forward and join us in celebrating a place where ideas can become realities. With Admiration, Allison Snavely-Villano Meet the entire creative and talented team that makes Fig® possible at figwestchester.com.

“The BID Corporation here has been extremely helpful in getting us on our feet. All of the other store owners all came over, welcomed us, were very warm and friendly. And we’ve been told many times that there’s nothing like this store in West Chester—and we’re very flattered.” Kimberly Mitchell, Owner

fresh face:

BEAU ÊTRE

beau être is a beautiful apothecary bed and bath store

that embodies the essence of cozy comfort and luxurious relaxation. Beautiful being is more than just the store’s name; it’s the spirit of femininity for the modern woman who, with sophistication and a refined sense of wellness, washes off the day with ease and slips into bed with grace—feeling rejuvenated and refreshed. Owner Kimberly Mitchell and her daughters sell bath and body products, skincare, salts, homemade soaps, sleepwear, housewares, and home fragrances. Silvanus, their very own organic line of body care products, is customizable and formulated right inside the store. Customers simply blend different scents to create the perfect fragrance. With more than a dozen products and 44 scents to choose from—the aromatic possibilities are endless.

Sweet dreams are wrapped in Laurence Tavernier’s soft silk and cashmere blended robes and draped in Keiki Co. lavish throws made with satin bindings. “All of our clothing and home accessories are focused on the bedroom,” Kimberly says. With unique and one-of-a-kind designs, mostly in organic cotton, Beau Être offers women everything they need to go to bed in peace—including original feminine and floral paintings by Annette Alessi. The Wyeth-inspired artist’s works are appropriately influenced by strong women: Harmony, Joy, Angelica, Faith, and Serenity. “At the end of the day, it’s about feeling inspired,” Kimberly says. At Beau Être you’ll be more than inspired—you’ll be delighted to awaken the body and the spirit. Learn more on the Beau Être Facebook page or visit beauetre.com.

Catherine Seisson, Owner & Baker

fresh face:

there’s something undeniably special about bread: the flavor of

a good loaf, the texture of a soft crumb, the crisp of the crust. It’s a sensuous experience. Bread comes in many shapes and forms, and the trade of baker is one of the oldest crafts in the world—playing a central role in families and communities across all cultures and civilizations. La Baguette Magique means magic wand. The French owner and baker Catherine Seisson says there are only five main ingredients to bread. And with them there are endless possibilities. There is water,

LA BAGUETTE MAGIQUE

salt, flour, and yeast. “The other ingredient is time,” she says. Making bread is a creative process. “Cooking is very precise. For bread you need to feel. You need to touch. You need to shape—and add a little magic. So it’s really something that puts you in contact with your final product,” she says. Visitors to the bakery will enjoy the lively atmosphere and a strong sense of hospitality. Catherine and her team will make breads, croissants, turnovers, and biscuits, as well as savory quiches, sandwiches, and tarts. “This is a great place to start my business,

for others to see me as a nice addition to West Chester. Everybody has been very kind, helpful, and welcoming. I can really witness that “community” is not only a word or a vision or something that is nice to have. It’s true here.” La Baguette Magique is more than just a childhood dream for Catherine—it’s a part of who she is. “Most people want things to be simple. Bread is simple,” she says with a smile. What happens in the bakery is her life’s work…and she calls it love. Visit magicbaguette.com to learn more and view La Baguette Magique’s full menu.

At Fig® we believe in the power of a community that works together to identify needs and find solutions—one that creates community connections and is passionate about helping its neighbors. We believe in the mission of The Charles A. Melton Arts and Education Center—our 2015 Social Mission Partner. Please consider giving to them with your dollars and your time this year.

COMMITTED TO THE QUALITY OF LIFE FOR ALL. FREE AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM SUMMER YOUTH BASKETBALL PROGRAM & CAMP COMMUNITY GARDEN PROGRAMS FOR YOUTH & ADULTS RENTAL SPACES

the charles a. melton arts and education center, formerly the West Chester Community Center, was

founded in 1917 by Dr. Leslie Pinckney Hill, the son of a former slave, an educator, author, poet, dramatist, community leader, and cum laude graduate of Harvard University. Dr. Hill believed in racial equality and saw a need to provide an educational, cultural, and social outlet for the African American community that had been historically underserved in West Chester. Recently the Center has embraced a renaissance. Eightyone percent of third through seventh graders in the “New Direction” free after-school program received an A or B average. Additionally, 89% of kindergarten through second graders received a “Demonstrates Consistently” and a 2 or higher on a 1-3 scale. The Center serves as a hub for community leadership and service, providing job training as well as educational and recreational programs for more than 95 years. big thing YOU WANT TO SEE IN west chester?”

“WHAT’S THE NEXT

we asked around town. We wanted to hear your thoughts on what could possibly make West Chester better. Let’s look toward the future and see if we can make some of these big ideas and big dreams a reality.

andrew e. dinniman

Big Idea: We could use a movie theater— hopefully the new Uptown Entertainment Alliance at the old Armory will in part take care of this need. Big Dream: Historic buildings that talk and tell you their story.

polly zobel BIG IDEA : I WOULD LIKE TO SEE WEST CHESTER FOLLOW THE EXAMPLE OF MEDIA AND BECOME A “FAIR TRADE” TOWN. BIG DREAM: DOUBLE THE NUMBER OF RESTAURANTS… I THINK WE ARE AT 80SOMETHING ALREADY.

john hannafin

Big Idea: An art history walking tour that includes famous musicians, painters, entertainers, and actors. Big Dream: A rooftop piano bar with life drawing classes and all-you-can-eat Swedish Fish.

malcolm johnstone

Big Idea: Keeping the Post Office at the Post Office. Big Dream: Zombie Jamboree (for guys who dance like me).

patrick mccoy BIG IDEA: LIKE “TREE CIT Y USA,” WEST CHESTER SHOULD DEVELOP A SCULPTURE OR ART CIT Y, WITH PERMANENT AND TEMPORARY INSTALLATIONS THROUGHOUT THE BOROUGH STREETS AND PARKS. BIG DREAM: CLOSE G AY STREET (MATLACK TO NEW STREETS) EVERY SUNDAY FROM 9 AM-3 PM (NOV-APRIL); 8 AM-5 PM, TO ALLOW PEDESTRIAN AND BICYCLE TRAFFIC ONLY. SET UP PARK BENCHES ALONG THE STREET AND HAVE FREE COFFEE.

rob lukens

Big Idea: I want to see train service to Philly return to West Chester. Big Dream: I want to see hordes of tourists who stop, stay, shop, and enjoy West Chester’s cultural amenities.

carolyn t. comitta Big Idea: Downtown arts “promenade” from The Uptown Bravo Theater (Armory) to WCU— something for everyone every day! Big Dream: Downtown waterfront promenade. (Although a prominent borough realtor says, “in the borough it’s all beachfront!”)

michelle h. kichline Big Idea: Trader Joe’s Big Dream: Roving barber shop quartets and/ or violinists to entertain outdoor diners in the summer months.

kyle hudson BIG IDEA : I CAN’T WAIT TO SEE THE UPTOWN ENTERTAINMENT ALLIANCE’S THEATER COME TO LIFE. I THINK THAT OUR BOROUGH COULD USE A CENTER FOR ALL THE CREATIVE FOLKS IN TOWN. BIG DREAM: I WANT TO SEE A WEST CHESTER NERD FEST! THINK COMIC BOOK CONVENTION WITH LIVE MUSIC, A VIDEO GAME COMPETITION, AND MORE!

LOCAL INNOVATOR SUZANNE ADAMS

giving back:

Meet people who inspire and give back to our community. Look for Fig® Giving Back in every issue.

SUZANNE ADAMS

picture it: a young girl growing up

on a farm walks through the fields with her father one winter night. He stops and digs his hands into the earth. He pulls a treasure out of the ground, wipes off the dirt, and cuts a slice. Together they eat a turnip in the cold, windy air. This vivid memory belongs to Suzanne Adams and while she has a close connection to the natural world, her vision for the West Chester Co-Op has many layers of social good—both seen and unseen. “My hope is that the Food Co-Op will be a way that people can reconnect with where their food came from, feel that sense of stewardship for the earth, and care about the environment because they’ll reconnect with it on the basis of how it meets their needs,” she says. In addition to providing opportunities for the West Chester Grower’s Market and other

18 figkennett.com

local producers to expand their market, she’ll work together with the Growers Market and hunger relief organizations to improve access to healthy, local food for people in need. “Food is about starting from the dirt that it came out of and working your way up to the table. That final reward of sitting down and eating together, and the sense of community it provides, is essential. And I think that has been lost in the industrial food system that we have now,” Suzanne says. With the store, the community has options of where to spend its money. “We have local food, we have local producers, and we have local profits that go back into our own community—so it’s economic development, it’s community development, it’s health, it’s support for open space.” Food cooperatives are generally financed by memberships

(buying equity in the business), member loans, and conventional debt (typically through Community Development Financial Institutions). Suzanne surmises that if farmers can make a better living, they can put more land into agricultural production and preserve more open space—thereby improving the environment through sustainable agriculture. The beauty of the West Chester Co-Op is that it’s small-town collaboration with big-picture ideas— a resurgence of genuine partnership at its best. To learn more about memberships, visit the West Chester Food Co-Op’s Facebook page at West Chester Food Co-Op, subscribe to the Co-Op newsletter by sending an email to wcfoodcoop@verizon.net, look for the rollout of the Co-Op’s website in March, and come to the Community Meeting on March 15, 3 – 5 pm at Sprout Music Collective.

at the core of the The StanAb Development Company is a passionate devotion to Chester County community. The StanAb Development Company was founded in 1994 by lifelong Chester County residents and entrepreneurs, Victor Abdala, Jr. and Tony Stancato. Their mission was unique and focused: repurpose and revitalize under-utilized real estate in Chester County to create a positive economic impact on the community. They have never wavered from this strategy. StanAb has been a catalyst in the transformation of West Chester when it brought in Iron Hill Brewery to the old Woolworth building on Gay and High Streets in 1998, becoming an anchor for the Borough of West Chester. Since then, StanAb has completed more than 23 residential and commercial projects in Chester County. But, none are quite as interesting, architecturally appealing, or even lifestyle-centric as their latest project, The Chestnut Street Lofts.

BRANDYWINE VAL LEY Perhaps the best part of Southeast Pennsylvania is the more than 100 attractions, each less than an hour’s drive from West Chester. This makes the Brandywine Valley an adventure for everyone, whether it’s canoeing on the Brandywine River, strolling through museums and art galleries, or exploring the vibrant downtowns. The lush estate gardens, with their seasonal displays and special events, are just the beginning of what is now called the Garden Capital of the World. Tour historic estates from the spectacular conservatory at Longwood Gardens to the whimsical gardens of Chanticleer. Encounter the gritty history of George Washington and his desperate troops at Valley Forge National Park or take a day trip to Old Town Philadelphia to see Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell. When it’s time to relax, you can enjoy a meal at one of the unique eateries in downtown West Chester, from pizza to haute cuisine. Many have outdoor dining and even rooftop patios. Entertainment occurs nearly every day from street festivals to band performances at local clubs to classical music and dance at West Chester University, just a few blocks from downtown West Chester. Of course, The Fig® Brandywine Traveler can only provide a taste of what can be experienced in the Brandywine Valley. But the features found here serve as a great introduction for what is becoming one of America’s great vacation spots. Malcolm Johnstone, Executive Director of West Chester BID

Chanticleer, a 35-acre pleasure garden in Wayne, PA, is one of the most visually exciting, imaginative, and romantic gardens in the U.S. Formerly the private estate of the Rosengartens, the garden is a study of textures and forms where foliage trumps flowers, the gardeners lead the design, and even the drinking fountains are sculptural. It is a garden of delights and learning—relaxing yet filled with ideas to take home. The garden has evolved greatly since opening to the public in 1993. Contemporary design complements the historic features of the property including terraces, sweeps of lawn, and magnificent trees. Plantings range from native to exotic, hardy to

tropical, and shade to sun. Staff-made furniture and decorative features add personal freshness to the overall effects. London’s Financial Times calls Chanticleer “planted to perfection...in the same high class as the famous gardens in England.” Through self-guided tours of the garden, a guided tour of the historic Chanticleer house, or a picnic lunch, the pleasures of the garden await. Open April through October, Wednesday through Sunday. Find more information at chanticleergarden.org.

LONGWOOD GARDENS Experience the everchanging nature of Longwood Gardens. This jewel of the Brandywine Valley got its start in 1906, when industrialist Pierre S. du Pont purchased a small farm near Kennett Square, PA, to save a collection of historic trees from being sold for lumber. Today, Longwood Gardens is one of the world’s great gardens, encompassing 1,077 acres of formal gardens, woodlands, meadows, fountains, and a 4.5-acre Conservatory. The Conservatory is a lush oasis of colorful and fragrant flowers and plants from around the world. From exotic orchids to unusual ferns and amazing bonsai, the Conservatory offers a glimpse of the varied plant life found around the globe. Each season showcases a new and exciting experience. A Longwood Christmas is a holiday tradition in itself with elegantly decorated trees, thousands of poinsettias, and more than 500,000 outdoor lights to explore.

Springtime in the Gardens means flowering bulbs— especially tulips, and Longwood Gardens boasts more than 125,000 of them planted in a colorful palette along the historic 600-foot Flower Garden Walk. WINTERTHUR More than 60 years ago, collector and horticulturist Henry Francis du Pont (1880–1969) opened his childhood home, Winterthur, to the public. Today, Winterthur is the premier museum of American decorative arts, showcasing an unparalleled collection of nearly 90,000 objects made or used in America between about 1640 and 1860. The collection is displayed in the magnificent 175-room house, much as it was when the du Pont family lived here. Visitors can enjoy guided tours of the house filled with fabulous antiques or select from seasonal tours such as Spring Tour and Yuletide at Winterthur. Set amidst a 1,000acre preserve of rolling meadows and woodlands, Winterthur’s spectacular 60-acre garden is among America’s best. Each spring, this masterpiece of design is transformed by showstopping blooms. Stroll the March Bank, Sundial Garden, Azalea Woods, and Peony Garden or take a narrated tram tour

through ever-blooming landscapes. Families will delight in Enchanted Woods, Winterthur’s award-winning children’s garden. Three exciting exhibitions will be open in the Winterthur Galleries in 2015: A Colorful Folk: Pennsylvania Germans & the Art of Everyday Life (now through January 3, 2016); The Diligent Needle: Instrument of Profit, Pleasure, and Ornament (now through July 5, 2015); and Tiffany Glass: Painting with Color and Light (September 5, 2015 through January 3, 2016). In addition, spectacular events such as the Pointto-Point steeplechase race (May 3, 2015) and Delaware Antiques Show (November 6 through 8, 2015) draw thousands of visitors annually.

DIRECTIONS Nestled in Delaware’s beautiful Brandywine Valley, Winterthur is located on Route 52 (5105 Kennett Pike), between I-95 and Route 1. HOURS Tuesday – Sunday, 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM Last tour tickets sold at 3:15 PM. Last tour is 3:30 PM. Closed Mondays (except during Yuletide), Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. innovative care, less waiting ride to an important destination. You know you will get there eventually, but you have no idea how long the trip will take or how many stops will be made along the way. Nobody wants to go to the hospital, but too often the apprehension associated with an unexpected illness or injury has to do with the hassle of getting through the cumbersome, seemingly endless process. A visit to the Chester County Hospital’s re-engineered Emergency Department (ED) changes the patient’s perspective on what an emergency room visit can be and should be. The entire patient care process has been streamlined and fine-tuned. The hospital found innovative, more efficient ways to provide the highest quality care while improving the overall experience. Conceptualizing and reconfiguring the old system meant evaluating and redesigning processes, redirecting resources, remodeling physical structures, increasing staffing, and shifting the mindset of people who were used to things being done a certain way. “We brought together a team of people to design a better system that would allow us to begin treatment faster,” explains Betty Brennan, EdD, Director of Emergency Services. “We said ‘Let’s be smarter. Let’s put the people who do the ordering up front.’ Our patients now see a doctor when they enter the ED, instead of later in the visit. Then we looked at what other

changes we could make to shorten the time between walk-in and discharge.” The hospital recognized that not every person who walks into the ED needs to lie down for care; some patients may only need a 15-minute evaluation, a simple test or two, or a prescription and a follow-up discussion. These patients can sit “ W E BROUGHT for this type of medical help. TOGETHER A TEAM Treatment begins immediately for OF PEOPLE TO everyone, and patients can move DESIGN A BETTER to the next stage SYSTEM THAT of their care, whether that’s WOULD ALLOW US TO toward discharge, further testing, BEGIN TREATMENT or hospital admission. FASTER.” Previously, it would take about 60 minutes for a patient to first see a physician. Today with these outside-thebox changes, the wait time to see an ED physician or physician assistant at Chester County Hospital is now a quick 9 – 10 minutes, on average. Since the new system went live, its success has become evident in many ways. Patient satisfaction is up. Staff satisfaction is up. Waiting times are down. Patients are in and out much faster. This ED innovation respects the patients’ time and puts their needs above all else.

COMMUNITY-SUPPORTED AGRICULTURE

OLD WORLD-INSPIRED CONSTRUCTION & LANDSCAPE

Randell's agricultural studies at the University of Delaware and growing up on the farm made farming a logical choice. In 2009, Randell Spackman started Thornbury Farm CSA to grow organic local produce for the community. Now with well over 100 members and a farm market, it has proven to be a great way to help keep the family farm. Thornbury Farm has since expanded with herb gardens, edible flowers, partnerships with local restaurants and offering a selection of fresh foods.

Thornbury Services was begun in 1992 by Randell Spackman. Growing up on his family’s historical Thornbury Farm, he learned about the land and the old ways of building. Using new techniques learned at the University of Delaware, Randell has learned how combine “Old World” charm with modern conveniences. Thornbury Services is ready to help you with your next project. Contact us. We’ll listen to your ideas and explain how we can help you achieve those goals.
