COLUMBIA has good taste it’s that time of year again—that time when the pace

of life slows down a bit to keep everything from melting. That time when hemlines go up and shoulders go bare, and when a shady spot is your best friend in the world. It’s that time when twisting the hair up off the back of your neck is practically mandatory, and dipping your toes in the kiddie pool is a little piece of heaven. And though it feels like it’ll last forever, we’ve come to know better, and so we savor the sultry sweetness of the season. We commit each ripened peach to memory, the juice dripping down on our chins as we laugh and pull out every recipe we have to make the most of this momentary perfection. Nothing tastes as good as summer, especially during those hours when the sun dips below the horizon, you’ve got a drink in hand, and someone else is doing the cooking. It’s the season for not-so guilty pleasures and for enjoying each passing moment. In this issue, find the summer tastes you’ve been craving all year long. Whether it’s insider tips to your favorite local restaurants, the best of summer fashions, or the ideal way to cool off on a steamy Columbia afternoon, you’ll discover it in these pages.

At Fig® we believe in the power of a community that works together to identify needs and find solutions—one that creates community connections and is passionate about helping its neighbors.

We believe in the mission of The Nurturing Center— our 2015 Social Mission Partner. Please consider giving to them with your dollars and your time this year.

fostering trust

AND NURTURING CARING RELATIONSHIPS providing comprehensive, family-focused, behavioral health services to prevent and treat child abuse and neglect, The Nurturing Center believes that every individual is a person of value and worth. As they work to foster trusting, caring relationships between adults and children, The Nurturing Center recognizes that the earlier positive parent-child interactions and family functioning are promoted, the more successful they are. In a warm and loving setting, the team at The Nurturing Center works one-on-one with adults to coach them on how to parent and interact with their children. In addition to helping them understand children’s normal developmental stages, the team also helps parents cope with problems such as unemployment, lack of education, depression, or other stress-inducing circumstances. When families are referred to the center, they are welcomed into an environment that promotes the therapeutic and healing process.

CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS! Volunteers are critical to the effective provision of services at The Nurturing Center. Whether they are working with a child oneon-one in the classrooms, planting flowers, aiding in the redesign of the playground, or bringing special sweets from a local bakery, they are cherished and supported by The Nurturing Center staff. For more information, contact Kathye Holder at 803.771.4160 x12 or kholder@ thenurturingcenter.org.

“We focus all of our efforts to make this a truly memorable week for every camper. So often children facing cancer are treated differently and, at camp, they can just be a ‘normal’ child.” – Meredith Walker

giving back: MEREDITH WALKER as a childhood rite of passage,

not much beats the fun and adventure of summer camp. Camp KEMO understands the importance of that experience, believing that a week of swimming, boating, and hiking is an ideal way to allow kids with cancer to experience the joy of simply being children.

While the very thought of childhood cancer can be so hard to consider, Camp KEMO offers a special place of happiness and hope. As longtime camp volunteer Meredith Sawyer Walker explains, “We focus all of our efforts to make this a truly memorable week for every camper. So often children facing cancer are treated differently and, at camp, they can just be a ‘normal’ child.”

For Meredith, a volunteer camp counselor since 2006, Camp KEMO is very much a family affair. Stacy Sawyer, her aunt, is currently the Board Chair for the camp. And many of her siblings, cousins, and in-laws have also served Camp KEMO in various capacities over the years. As a matter of fact, Meredith even met her husband, Stevens Walker, at camp as a fellow counselor: “Camp is wonderful, but it’s not really the place for a budding romance,” laughs Meredith. “We started out at camp as just friends, but it bloomed into something more by the end of summer. I love that Stevens and I

connected through such a magical place that is so close to our hearts.” Carrying the memory of Cole Sawyer, a young family member lost to cancer in 2004, Meredith goes back to camp each summer to experience this remarkable place: “I often refer to the second week in June as my refresh button to regain a sense of balance and perspective in my life.” To volunteer, donate, or learn more about this privately-funded one week summer camp for children with cancer (and their siblings), visit campsite.palmettohealth.org.

celebrating his 50th

birthday with the urge to write new material, longtime Columbia singer/ guitarist Murray Baroody wisely enlisted bassist and Jam Room Studio owner Jay Matheson to help make it happen. Joining forces with drummer Steve Sancho and guitarist Ben Irons, this group of four seasoned musicians naturally solidified to form The Distributors. With a name inspired by Murray’s day job as president of Orangeburg Distributors (a beer distributorship founded 51 years ago by his father, the late “Tootie” Baroody), this band embodies the spirit of “regular guy rock.” Influenced by 1970s bands like Led Zeppelin, Cream, The Rolling Stones, James

Gang, and The Who, this foursome demonstrates its collective experience with every driving beat of their original songs. Mining their expansive knowledge of rock history for sounds that challenge them, each member brings his unique perspective to the songwriting process. With songs like “Gone” (part rockabilly, part garage-rock), and “Crazy” (with its brief yet irresistible flash of 90s pop-rock), The Distributors have created a self-titled debut album that not only avoids overt influences and period clichés, but also forms an irresistable sound of their very own. DISCOVERING THE

tastes of summer

summer is a great time to get creative when cooling off with refreshing beverages. On a famously hot South Carolina day, you can find Fig® blogger Judah Cannon of Advintage enjoying a white wine from Rioja, Spain or a Rosé from Provence, France.

“Wine regions all over the world are producing unique white wines ideal for summer, and Rosé is more popular than ever, so the selection in Columbia is the largest it’s ever been,” says Judah. Summer is also a great time to try out your mixology skills.

“My advice is to keep the recipes simple so you don’t have to carry around a bunch of ingredients to the beach, lake, or pool. For an easy and delicious cocktail, check out Charleston’s own Bittermilk Craft Cocktail Mixers. Available at multiple retailers around Columbia, you literally just add your spirit of choice to the mixer for an instant craft cocktail.” Advintage Distributing is a South Carolina-based importer and distributor for a number of Columbia’s great local wine shops that can guide and assist you in choosing exactly the right wines this summer.

What is one of your favorite recommendations?

What’s the best way to enjoy your wine list?

What’s the best seat in the house? Any tips on how to get it?

“We love the Huevos Rellenos—it’s our take on a deviled egg that my wife and I had in Spain. It’s a local Wil-Moore Farms egg that we fill with the whipped egg yolk, romesco sauce, smoky paprika, and top with a grilled piece of tuna. I usually have to talk people into ordering it, but then they get it every time they come back.”

BOURBON What is one of the most underrated items on your menu? “I don’t think people realize the unique, rare special selections of bourbon and whiskey we have. As far as underrated food, it would have to be the Biscuit of Champions at our Sunday brunch.”

32 figcolumbia.com

“You can buy a bottle of wine in our retail shop and pay a small corkage fee to drink it at your table, expanding the wine list by 100 at least!”

IL GIORGIONE What is one of your signature menu items? “The signature item at Il Giorgione Pizzeria & Wine Bar (Gio’s) is the fresh house-made mozzarella cheese. George makes the cheese fresh every morning and, to our knowledge, there is no other place in Columbia where you can get same-day fresh mozzarella cheese. As a result, one of the favorite server recommendations is the Caprese Salad, which features the housemade mozzarella, tomatoes, and fresh basil from our herb garden.”

“Best seat would be the community table, right in the middle of everything. Get there early or call ahead and reserve it for a large party.” Are there any off-menu items readers should know about? “Always, always ask if there is a Main Street special available. Our cooks love to experiment with food and they come up with interesting dishes throughout the week. If the staff likes it, we put on the menu for the day!”

MOTOR SUPPLY CO. What’s the best seat in the house? Any tips on how to get it? “For the total Motor insider experience, grab the leftmost seats at the bar at 5:30 sharp when the restaurant opens and enjoy personalized ‘cocktail concierge’ service from head barman Josh Streetman as well as a chance to chat with Chef Wes Fulmer as he comes and goes from the kitchen, of which you’ve got the best view in the house.”

MR. FRIENDLY’S hat is one of the favorite server W recommendations? “The ‘French Quarter’ Pimento Cheese Skillet with toasted ciabatta bread. This is the pimento cheese that tops our most popular dinner item—the bacon wrapped angus filet. People always rave about it, but not everyone knows they can get it as an appetizer!”

OAK TABLE What’s the best seat in the house? “The Bar with the direct view of the State House and you can just walk in!” hat are some favorite server W recommendations? “Try the Scallops appetizer and Butterscotch Bread Pudding dessert.”

Get the inside scoop on some of our favorite restaurants.

ROSSO Are there any new menu items we should know about? “Yes, we have recently added Crispy Fried Artichokes with Bacon Jam, a great Summer Panzanella Salad with Buratta Cheese, and Creamy Mozzarella Fritters.”

SOLSTICE What’s the best seat in the house? “Request table 1 when making your reservation. It’s a cozy table nestled in the corner of the bar that’s intimate enough for date night, but with a view of the entire restaurant.”

SPOTTED SALAMANDER CAFÉ What is one of your favorite recommendations? “The Spotted Salad is the best salad ever!” What was your food and decor inspired by? “Simple Southern goodness.”

authentic ROSEWOOD DAIRY BAR rosewood dairy bar is the quintessential summer spot for all ages. Families walk there after dinner for dipped cones. Teens with newly minted drivers licenses pull in for burgers before heading to a movie. And a bucket of their unparalleled fried chicken is the perfect entree for anyone to pick up when it’s just too hot to cook, and you sure are hungry for an old-time favorite.

But the Dairy Bar isn’t just a summer fling. During the school year, the lot is flooded with students when Hand Middle or Dreher

High School has a half-day. The soccer crowd from Owens Field takes over in the fall, filling the place every Saturday. In the spring, little league teams meet for endof-season parties, or fries and milkshakes after a regular game. When the Gamecocks are playing at Williams Brice, the lines for tailgate food are long, but cheerful. Every day after school, a few mini vans can be spotted in the parking lot, full of lucky kids who were very, very good this week. There’s a treat for everyone, from the perfect pimento cheese burger to a

chocolate cone, dipped in butterscotch and covered in nuts. Open since 1942, not too much has changed over the years at the Dairy Bar. Proving there will always be a place for easy restaurants that serve the classics, the Rosewood Dairy Bar has been a neighborhood favorite for a long time— because a good milkshake will always be exactly what someone’s craving. Visit Rosewood Dairy Bar this summer at 3003 Rosewood Drive. figcolumbia.com

summer’s guilty pleasure

favorite summer food

when it’s too hot to cook

“Summer is filled with opportunities for guilty pleasures. Maybe that’s why I love it so much. But making (and then eating) buttermilk ice cream is well worth buying a churn and taking time to do it yourself.”

“I want snack-y stuff: my husband’s guacamole, DiPrato’s pimento cheese, kettle corn from Soda City, fruit...

“Too hot to cook? Go jump in the pool/lake/ocean and cool off. If there’s no water nearby, have another beer. If there’s no beer? Go get some.”

favorite summer beverage “I am in love with putting some basil in a cold jug of sweet tea. That added flavor makes an already refreshing beverage that much more refreshing. And let’s be honest... alcohol can be added.”

Summer is also chicken salad weather. I like the sweet variety, with some kind of fruit and pecans, and I’ve kept a mental ranking of all of the chicken salads in Columbia over the years. Restaurants have closed and recipes have changed, but Rosewood Market’s cranberry chicken salad has consistently remained in my top 5.”

favorite summer produce “My three-year-old son loves watermelon, so we’re growing watermelons in our backyard from seed this year. Right now they’re in little tiny cups on the windowsill. In a few weeks, we’ll transplant them to the backyard. In a few months, they’ll be enormous.”
