D E T F CRA ENNETT K the people who work, live, and play in Kennett Square care deeply about this town. It’s palpable. You can feel it. So what makes Kennett Square so special? Is it the restaurants, retailers, and businesses? Is it the schools, churches, and local organizations? I believe it is a combination of all of these things, brought together by everyone working toward a common good. This common good is reflected in the mission of Fig. We believe in the power of creative communication to inspire people to be invested in their community and understand the importance of buying local. We believe in collaboration, and that the best things can happen when we work together. Thank you to our community partners, Historic Kennett Square and Longwood Gardens, who share in this vision and work tirelessly for our community. This summer, our town will be alive with music, shopping, and dining. There are free concerts at Anson B. Nixon Park, Third Thursdays on State Street, and leisurely art strolls through our galleries and studios. The farmers market, open every Friday afternoon on East State Street, is filled with vibrant colors pouring out of the vendors' stands into local baskets. Please join us as we taste the bounty and delight in all that Kennett Square has to offer. On the following pages, find an abundance of things to do, taste, and savour this summer season. Enjoy,

Locally Always fresh
the produce place is much more than your average produce store.
try our salsa made with fresh local ingredients
We specialize in fresh, high quality produce, offering a large variety of local produce in season. Our summer tomatoes, green beans, and sweet corn (and more) are sourced from favorite local farmers, including our own family farm. These same local ingredients are used in our fresh prepared foods including our salsa, fresh cut fruit, salads, and wraps. From the days of his childhood selling home-grown sweet corn, Chris King's family traditions continue to this day with his own family. Today's market provides an array of fresh and local produce and the King family's commitment, to provide their customers with the highest quality produce, continues.

I love going to all the Farmer's Markets. I'm often at the Kennett Market on Fridays and again at the West Chester Market on Saturdays. I like to buy any vegetables that speak to me and whatever looks beautiful and vibrant that day. I like to say "hi" to the farmers and all my friends that I run into while I'm shopping. It's just a great time to shop, chat, and take it all in.

Bob Strehlau Owner Bove Jewelers
AUTHENTIC :
BOB STREHLAU
when fifth generation jeweler
Bob Strehlau and his wife Jacci bought Bove Jewelers this past February, they refashioned it to reflect the many facets of the Historic Kennett Square community. Bob had been with Bove Jewelers for fifteen years, and served as general manager for the last ten. “I didn’t want to have any brands that the former owners had,” he says, “because I wanted to go in with a clean slate.” Bob’s main concern when resetting this local gem was price structure; he had been hearing from clients that they felt they were being priced out. After doing considerable research, Bob says Bove now has better prices but with the same level
10 figkennett.com
of quality. The response in the past four weeks has already been overwhelming. “Very few clients are leaving without a Bove Jewelers bag,” he says. In addition to retooling the price structure, Bob also restyled the store’s space itself. Bove Jewelers now consists of four showrooms representing four generations through someone’s family. There’s a children’s department; a mid-range, twenty to fifty-year-old fashion segment; one room for bridal and diamonds; and a fourth just for men. Bob and his team also take the time to connect wholeheartedly with their clientele. “There are times when I don’t even take the key out of my pocket and
open up a showcase,” he says, “because I find myself talking to this person for a half hour and having a great rapport.” That heartfelt atmosphere pervades the Bove Jewelers experience. Before the re-opening, Jacci led their eight-year-old daughter around the children’s showroom to get her perspective, so that little kids would feel like they’re in a store custom fit for them. “We have ballerina boxes and little girls’ lockets,” Bob says, “that we can engrave for them while they wait, just to make them feel special and welcome, too.” To learn more about Bob, Jacci and Bove Jewelers visit bovejewelers.com.

giving back | summer 2016 | figkennett.com
volunteer. donate. give back. Was Tom an Amtrak conductor? During a 25 year period, he was riding Amtrak so frequently that William Irwin, a conductor, befriended him. When Irwin retired in 1999 with 47 years of service Tom asked what he was going to do with his uniforms. Irwin responded, “Well, I guess I should give them to you.”—a tribute to Tom’s importance of lifelong connections and friendship. By the way, Tom has ridden in the cab of various Amtrak Motors including an Acela!

GIVING BACK :
THOMAS C. SWETT
whether it was sitting on the boards of Kennett Library and Chester County Hospital, becoming president of Historic Kennett Square, or being in charge of all things non-scientific for the renowned Stroud Water Research Center, Tom Swett has been both surprised and humbled by his good fortune to serve the community. “I’ve attempted to use whatever experience, skills, and talents I’ve had to enhance the quality of life in the community,” he says. Tom became President of Historic Kennett Square in 2005 and with his years of non-profit experience, quickly enhanced the organization’s day-to-day operations. Under his leadership, new board members were added and the 20 figkennett.com
Economic Development Committee created a booklet on, “How to Open a Business in Kennett Square,” which became a tool for all new businesses settling downtown. In fact, it was during his tenure that Talula’s Table opened and enhanced the image of Kennett Square. After a brief hiatus, Tom still serves on the Historic Kennett Square board of directors. Giving back seems to run in Tom’s blood. Tom’s great-great-grandfather was Robert Poole, of Poole & Hunt Company fame, whose company produced machinery and castings for a worldwide market in the 19th century—including the columns and brackets that still support the U.S. Capitol dome in Washington, D.C. Poole gave the City of Baltimore land for a school and built
the Hampden branch of the thriving Enoch Pratt Free Library. Tom’s father served as vice chairman of the library, as well as the Baltimore Symphony, and the Maryland Art Institute. This March, Tom was elected President of the Kennett Library Board at a time when the library was searching for a key community leader who would help the library through a new building planning stage. Tom had previously served as the library board President from 1989 – 1992. To learn more about Tom and his new board appointment with the Kennett Library, visit kennettpubliclibrary.org.

with artÉ salon,
Diane Winslow has created a cosmetological oasis in the commotion of daily life. A stylist in the area for twenty-two years, Diane had gotten to a point in her life where she wanted to do something on her own. And she wanted to keep it small. “I kept hearing from my clients what they wished they could experience at a salon,” she says, “so I decided to create an intimate four-station boutique.”
Arté Salon is comprised of three stylists, including Diane, all who have a passion and extensive knowledge for their work and are committed to continuing education in cosmetology. Their forth chair remains open for hire, awaiting its perfect fit. The salon also has a freelance makeup artist on call for weddings and other special events, by appointment only. Diane’s stylists only use quality products, including the complete Moroccanoil line and Schwarzkopf hair products. But most importantly, Diane wanted to create an environment where her employees work happily and her clients feel relaxed and satisfied. “I wanted to create a calming atmosphere,” Diane says, “and not just your typical hustle and bustle kind of salon.” Arté Salon’s building is as delightful and unique as its stylists—an eighty-yearold structure joined with newly built renovations, including an entire wall of windows where clients can unwind amidst a serene setting while enveloped in an eclectic mix of soothing music.
FRESH FACE:
ARTÉ SALON
“I really pay attention to detail, not only in how I created the salon, but in my work,” Diane says. “I take great pride in every aspect of my clients’ experience at Arté Salon.” To learn more about Diane and Arté Salon visit artesalon.net.

COMMUNITY SUPPORTER
The Crozer-Keystone Sleep Centers now offer screening for an innovative treatment called Inspire, for patients who suffer from sleep apnea. According to the National Sleep Foundation, more than 18 million Americans have sleep apnea. For those who have been diagnosed with moderate-to-severe forms of the disease, a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine is the gold-standard treatment option. However, many people can’t—or won’t—tolerate CPAP. Inspire is a small implantable device that maintains normal breathing patterns during sleep by gently
stimulating key airway muscles. For some patients, it can literally save their lives. Kenneth Briskin, M.D., Crozer-Keystone otolaryngologist, evaluates patients to determine if Inspire is right for them.
