FRESH and in SEASON summer in west chester is joyful. You hear sounds of
outside dining: stemware clings on iron tables and the soft hum of merging conversation lulls into the warm air. Dogs laze beside owners, soaking up the cool shade, an occasional table scape, and the kindness of water delivered by the hostess. Drinks are cool and plentiful. Summer in West Chester is magical. This town, after 20 years, fills my subconscious. The smell of hops outside Iron Hill Brewery brings me back to late night walks to the University. I can hear my roommates laughing and swaying under the streetlights on High Street. Driving by Wally’s Wiener World becomes sitting on the Courthouse steps with my little boys, their hair plastered with sweat from our walk, chubby fingers covered in barbecue chip dust. Walking by the vast flower arrangements at Limoncello smells like Roseau at dusk, the sky turning summer pink.
“ Summer in West Chester is here! Join with us as we celebrate the best that West Chester has to offer.”
Summer in West Chester is abundant. Investors tell you West Chester has all the right ingredients for success: a hospital, an accredited University, a Courthouse and brick sidewalks lined with charming retail shops and eateries. Some suggest West Chester is a bar town filled with poor choices and excess, the remnants of late night spilled onto morning sidewalks. I will argue that there is something deeper, more intrinsic that defines West Chester. The Melton Center is growing food for the food cupboard in their community garden. The Artisan Exchange, revolutionary in concept, sets each partner up for success by providing professional kitchen space for each maker and their craft. Thornbury Farms, local and organic, works with heart, family, and history to ensure we get the safest, freshest food. These ingredients mix together to create the perfect town. Summer in West Chester is here! Join with us as we celebrate the best that West Chester has to offer. Let’s truly enjoy the tastes, smells, and people who make our memories sweet. Cheers!

“The town has a lot of new energy and has seen an influx of people. We’re looking to raise the standard,” Nick says. “A lot of what we’re doing now is value oriented so families and college kids will find that value. It’s also a combination of speed and convenience.” “And we have something for everybody,” Tom adds.

to know Rapidough serves natural sodas, sources local ingredients, and makes everything from scratch. This season the brothers recommend the salami, corn, and jalapeño pizza topped with green pesto sauce and served with feta cheese. They also recommend the fig, bacon, and arugula pizza. This fresh perspective on dining comes naturally. “Our restaurants are an extension of what we do when we’re not working. We’re always cooking; we’re always entertaining people. authentic : MARYANN BALDASSARRE the artisan exchange is a
business collaboration that offers local food for a sustainable community. It affords its fifty members every tool they need to succeed—and in its third year is a finalist for the Governor’s Impact Award. The 30,000 sq. ft. facility houses four concepts of The Artisan Exchange: lease affordable space to entrepreneurs to make their products; allow them to sell their products every Saturday at the Indoor Artisan Market; offer wholesale distribution for their products to gain a broad audience; and provide the use of a commercial kitchen for manufacturers to scale up production.
6 figwestchester.com
Maryann, principal of The Artisan Exchange, knows the challenges entrepreneurs face. She’s also the owner of Golden Valley Farms Coffee Roasters. Her twenty years of small business experience coupled with Frank’s (her husband) thirty-year career in the banking and financial services sector has prepared them to help small business owners and artisanal food manufacturers over every single barrier and hurdle they encounter. “We’ve now created the ability to save, foster, and preserve cultural foods,” Maryann says. Underneath one roof you’ll find Chinese dumplings, Greek yogurt, German pretzels, Irish victory cakes,
English quiches, and Belgian waffles to name just a few. “If you took a snap shot of The Artisan Exchange at this moment you would have a melting pot of cultures from around the world” Frank says. The future is bright—and unique. “There’s no one else in the country that offers one affordable, comprehensive package like ours,” Frank says. “And we’re most proud of the fact that we have helped more than fifty businesses thrive. We don’t see any limit to that.” Maryann says with a smile. Visit The Artisan Exchange Food & Indoor Artisan Market every Saturday from 10 am – 2 pm. PENNS WOODS WINERY
Q: WHAT IS THE BEST SEAT IN THE HOUSE AND HOW DO YOU GET IT?
Q: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PORCH POUR AND WHY?
A: Weather permitting, anywhere on our patio is by far the best seat in the house. Our patio seating is first come, first served.

A: Traminette—a crisp and refreshing wine—has notes of bright citrus with a soft honey finish. The greatest kick-backand-relax wine!

PENNS WOODS WINERY
Q: WHAT IS THE BEST APPETIZER ON YOUR MENU?
Q: WHAT IS GOING TO BE YOUR SIGNATURE MENU ITEM?
Q: WHAT BEVERAGE IS YOUR MOST REFRESHING SUMMER POUR?
A: My favorite appetizer on the menu is the cheese plate. While it changes fairly regularly, it is always a solid choice. Currently we have Thai chile marinated goat cheese, sharp cheddar, chipotle gouda, and Swiss. It's acccompanied by strawberry honey, grain mustard, raspberrry chutney, crackers, pretzel chips, toasted bread, and a little walnut chicken salad. It’s the perfect small bite item to pair with a great craft beer or American whiskey.
A: The Burgundy Brick Chicken is a modern take on a French classic— utilizing several different cooking techniques without overthinking it.
A: The most refreshing summer pour would be our sangria! Made with our Viognier as the base, it has fresh fruit and a sweet finish. We make it fresh daily and it is perfect served ice cold on a hot summer day!
CHADDSFORD WINERY Q: WHAT IS THE BEST BBQ DRINK? A: Our best BBQ drink is our Chaddsford Hard Cider. Whether you’re manning the grill or lounging by the pool, serve it chilled for a refreshing drink on a hot summer day. Our Hard Cider can also be used to marinate your favorite BBQ foods or to make a Carolina-style BBQ sauce.
BOXCAR BREWPUB Q: WHAT IS THE BEST SEAT IN THE HOUSE AND HOW DO YOU GET IT? A: People seem to gravitate to the Boxcar Brewpub lounges we have created. It really is first come, first served as of now, but we are considering taking reservations in the near future.
LORENZO & SONS PIZZA Q: WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL FAVORITE ITEM ON THE MENU? A: It would have to be our awardwinning, ranked in the “best 101 pizzas in the country, iconic 28” Lorenzo & Son’s infamous pizza! The recipe was passed down from pops when he started Lorenzo’s in 1970 and has not changed since. I am proud (as he is) to still be serving pizza. Whenever you see that big pizza in Philly, everyone says “That’s Lorenzo & Son’s” pizza!
HARVEST Q: WHAT IS YOUR MOST UNDERRATED ITEM? A: Nutty Watermelon Salad: watercress, strawberries, blueberries, toasted almonds, and lime vinaigrette.
YORI’S BAKERY Q: WHAT IS YOUR MOST UNDERRATED ITEM AND WHY SHOULD WE TRY IT? A: Danish pastry. We make the dough from scratch at the bakery and we make all of the fruit fillings. They’re baked fresh every morning!

Split Rail Tavern serves a refreshing, common sense approach to good food and drink. In a foodie’s paradise that’s littered with grandiose menu descriptions, pretentious attitudes, and chefs who are inspired by deconstructed nothingness, Split Rail Tavern remains a safe haven for down-toearth diners who want great food and drinks in a cool space. And yes, it’s that simple.
Paul McCreavy, Co-Owner; Justin Hoke, Chef de Cuisine; Douglas Huntley, Co-Owner/Executive Chef; John Day, General Manager
fresh face: THE SPLIT RAIL TAVERN “i take a very commonsense approach to food,”
says co-owner Douglas Huntley, who has been in the restaurant business for more than twentyfive years. He describes Split Rail Tavern as a modern taphouse in the heart of downtown West Chester that connects guests to handcrafted food and drink made from locally-sourced, commonsense ingredients in a humble, yet refined, environment. Guests will feel relaxed in the gastropub, enveloped by local reclaimed wood—including 100year old hemlock flooring and cherry bar tops.
Co-owner Paul McCreavy has a significant background in beer while Douglas is a certified sommelier and the chef. Split Rail Tavern will have twenty beers on tap, two hand pulls, and eight wines on tap (four red, four white, and a seasonal—like a rosé). Craft beer drinkers will be pleased. And high-end taste seekers will enjoy barrel-aged cocktails like rye manhattans, negroni, and a spicy sazerac. “Our core menu items we’ll source what we can when we can,” Douglas says. “Oddly enough, we live in a world where it’s sometimes easier to source reasonably priced lamb from a different hemisphere
than right here in PA.” But he will source ground beef that’s 100% grass-fed organic from Gap, PA. And he will offer specials from those small, local farms—because it’s good food. The name Split Rail Tavern comes from a combination of a grassroots, roll-up-your-sleeves mentality and a nickname (“the rail splitter”) for Abe Lincoln—who has historical relevance to the area. True to its namesake, Split Rail Tavern will capitalize on its honest efforts and work hard to tear down the foodie elite fences in order to connect us all to an authentically delicious meal. OFFERING TIMELESS ESSENTIALS FOR EVERY MAN’S CLOSET 16 131 west market street 484.905.7098 mainlinecustomclothiers.com
OFFERING CUSTOM SUITS FROM $795.00
larry albert is the owner of the
recently expanded Mainline Custom Clothiers. He says he feels like old Hollywood—but is quick to acknowledge he graduated from the school of life. “Every man should have a custom suit or shirt at least once in his lifetime,” he says. At age nineteen, fresh out of the service, Larry got his start in the business. His great grandfather was a custom tailor and it’s apparent that Larry’s passion runs deep. “I started at $1.50 an hour and in two weeks I got a ten cent raise,” he says with pride and a hint of nostalgia.
“ Every man should have a custom suit or shirt at least once in his lifetime.”
Working his way up the ranks at high-end Philadelphia shops like William H. Wanamaker and
Al Bermans, he opened his first store in the Hilton Hotel on Packard Avenue. By 1975 Larry had purchased Witlin & Gallagher which was established in 1917. This was the premier men’s store where Elizabeth Taylor shopped for Eddie Fisher and Grace Kelly shopped for Prince Rainier. The store shipped fabric to Frank Sinatra and Wilt Chamberlain. Larry steadily grew from one store to four. He recounts beautiful stories about old Hollywood. “Henry Kissinger bought a tie from me after he spilled food on it. I’ve met guys like Joe Frazier, Sylvester Stallone, Al Pacino, but Muhammad Ali—he liked to hang out and talk. Now he was a nice guy,” a reminiscent Larry says. A dress down trend was emerging in the world of fashion and there was a decline in elegance—but something in Larry’s fabric moved him forward and he opened Mainline Custom Clothiers in West Chester in 2008. He’s already expanded twice. What has he learned from all his years of experience? “Persistence. Most people fall down and give up. Successful people keep

getting up,” he says. “The people that hang on the longest win.” This fall he will bring custom blouses for women. And as if he is channeling that old Hollywood glamour, he says, “Custom can make you look twenty pounds lighter and two inches taller by design.”

giving back: SCOTT BOHN police chief scott bohn
remembers a time when the downtown was a very different place. “Town was desolate. I remember there were boarded up places. There was nothing new in town. There was no reason to be in town,” he says, looking out his office window. He attributes West Chester’s success to a cycle of cooperation between local businesses and the community—coupled together with the police department. First, crime was reduced. Second, a few benchmark businesses came to town. Then, the downtown came alive. West Chester quickly became a destination for
18 figwestchester.com
its walkability, top-notch eateries, stylish boutiques, and thriving economic climate. “There was a very different business dynamic just a few years ago,” Bohn says. “I would like to think we played a significant role in the evolution and development of the community. In that same time period we were able to reduce crime by 50% while experiencing a great deal of growth.” He admits that many communities would like to have the issues that West Chester has, but he looks at them as challenges rather than problems. “I believe strongly in the mission of the police department and certainly in what
we do and providing public service. Our public has been very responsive. I’m fond of saying, ‘You can’t police in a community that does not want to be policed.’ We have an extremely engaged public and an informed and educated public,” Bohn acknowledges. His giving back comes in the form of responsibility—to promote the health and safety of the residents, visitors, and the business community. And it’s a job he takes seriously. His twenty-nine years of service incorporates the concept of helping others. “I love what I do. I really do.” Learn more at west-chester.com/183 /Police-Department.

Most people recognize Lorenzo and Sons Pizza from the South Street pizzeria that makes a uniquely famous, and delicious, 28inch pie. Others know the secret of an authentic Philly Taco. Sports fans find it at four spots inside the Wells Fargo Center.
fresh face: LORENZO AND SONS PIZZA lorenzo and sons pizza
is more than just a pizza place— it’s a slice of history. Lorenzo Pulizzi emigrated here from Italy in 1965. Founded in 1970, his original pizza recipe is still used today—and has been a success. It all began at an Italian market in South Philadelphia and one of Lorenzo’s sons—Giuseppe “Joe” Pulizzi—continues to carry both the name and the tradition of originality and dedication. Late last year Joe purchased the corner building on High and Gay streets, which was built in 1860. He
envisioned Lorenzo and Sons’ West Chester location as a place where customers of all ages could come and hang out, use wifi for studying, have family dinners, and enjoy great food. The décor will be inspired by a sense of warmth and history, and customers can eat on the first or second floor, or relish the summer breeze while dining outside. “In Philly we’re known just for takeout. Here I wanted to do a little twist. I wanted to expand the menu to accommodate everyone, including college students, foodies, business owners, and the township,” he says. In addition
to the famous slices and pies, Joe plans to serve paninnis, sandwiches, salads, calzones, cheesesteaks, fries, and stromboli. Everything will be made fresh, nothing will be frozen, and he plans to do delivery. “I was born into pizza,” he says. You might not know that he also has a degree in Cardiovascular Perfusion for open heart surgery and used to work at Temple University Hospital. “Even when I was there I still did pizza. I just love it.” Learn more at lorenzoandsons.com.

For decades, Wally’s Wiener World, an outdoor hotdog stand, has been part of the landscape at the historic Courthouse. Order a hotdog prepared the way you like it from Scott “Wally” Vassil, then grab a seat in the shade of the Courthouse and watch the world go by.
Located in one of the most historic structures in West Chester, the Lincoln Room offers a relaxing and tasty luncheon experience that harkens back to a quieter time. Owner Amy Hamlet has decorated the intimate eatery to reflect the charm that can be enjoyed the way it was meant to be.
First they take delicious fair trade organic coffee, then brew it up to be served with love. That’s the Fennario way. There are also creative lattes, delightful desserts, locally-made bagels with flavorful spreads, and awesome breakfast wraps—and entertainment most evenings.

“The power of observation is critical to my career as a Professional Civil and Architectural Engineer; looking beyond the obvious and the scripted is the challenge and the point of creative problem solving. With close to 30 years behind me, defined by my technical observations about all types of buildings, structures, landscapes, and people, my zen moments of observation are everywhere, and I’ve learned to keep a camera close.”
Amy Valuck is a designer and master craftsman who creates and restores stained glass for residential, public, and sacred spaces. After sixteen years of working as part of a team on historical restoration and conservation of stained glass, she launched her own studio in 2014. Imagine a theater in the heart of downtown West Chester that’s within walking distance of neighborhoods, restaurants, and boutiques—a place where arts groups could rent theater space for rehearsals and performances. The Uptown! Entertainment Alliance (UEA) is well on its way to reaching the $3.75 million goal to purchase the building and anticipate that the theater will open in 2016— just in time to celebrate the historic Armory building’s 100th birthday. In the meantime, visit uptownwestchester.org for information about upcoming concerts, performances, and cultural events in and around West Chester. Looking ahead, UEA is planning Footlights and Fun Raising—a dance party—on October 17th and Original Soul Sounds of Philly—a concert to be held in WCU’s Emilie K. Asplundh Concert Hall—on November 14th.

Conventional mammography takes images of the breasts from two angles. In 3D mammography, the
scanner moves in an arc over the breasts, taking images from various angles to produce sharper, more detailed images. The benefits of 3D mammography include: • Reduction of call-backs.
• Greater accuracy in pinpointing size, shape, and location of abnormalities. • Possible detection of more invasive cancers that cannot be found with 2D mammography. Schedule your potentially life-saving appointment today.
