Defining perfection.

Perfection is more than precision: it is a way of life.

We believe perfection is a sense of always being in the right place; of belonging, comfort and wellbeing.

Perfection is growing in harmony with nature, in green and flourishing landscapes. It is seeing families live well, in homes designed around their health and happiness.

At SHAWOOD, we craft our homes and communities with perfection in mind.

Home, perfected

At its core, the SHAWOOD way of life is about harmony. Built on the contrasting but complementary fusion of engineering and the natural world, SHAWOOD homes and communities are a distillation of Japanese design excellence, centred by a strong connection to Australian landscapes and lifestyles.

Wrap-around glazing, framing a green outlook. Norman Estates, Gledswood Hills.

SHAWOOD places are crafted to age beautifully, in homes, communities and streetscapes that endure, mature and grow in value over time.

Working with our natural surroundings, we add to and become part of local ecosystems, laying the foundations for communities that will bring neighbours together and be enjoyed for generations to come.

1 – Sustainable milestone: SHINKA House is the first net zero SHAWOOD home constructed outside Japan.

From the first moment, SHAWOOD quality of design makes an impression. Each home is clean and modern, with its own quietly sophisticated character.

Composed for life.

The SHAWOOD design ethos crafts architecture around family life. Beginning with research and development in Japan, through our local team of architects and select partnerships with Australian studios, we pursue excellence and innovation; creating homes that respond to how you live.

2 – Privacy and sustainability, aesthetically assured by our Nichiha Fu-ge Ventilated Wall System and Takasho Screen.

– Each SHAWOOD home is fully landscaped before you move in.

Every aspect of a SHAWOOD exterior is considered. Honed over generations of innovation, our frames and walls deliver enduring quality, in homes that minimise maintenance while enhancing how you live.

A lasting impression.

Advanced from the outside in, SHAWOOD homes are uniquely protected by the nano-hydrophilic finish of Nichiha Fu-ge cladding. This high-tech exterior coat keeps your home pristine for longer, preventing fading in the sun and cleaning itself with every rain shower.

A home that breathes.

Dual ventilation within your home’s engineered walls allows air to ebb and flow, letting condensation evaporate while adding extra protection from summer heat and winter chill.

Shielded from the elements.

SHAWOOD homes are sheltered against the elements, with two layers of waterproofing and additional roof insulation for greater interior comfort, and further peace of mind.

01 – Soft Close

Select from three closing speeds or choose to hold your door open with a simple self-closing hinge.

02 – Deadbolt catch

The security of a specially engineered catch locks in your door’s deadbolt as an added safeguard.

03 – Twin locks

The two locks of your front door provide extra protection, while being easy to secure and reopen with a single key.

04 – Open at a touch

As well as being lightweight, a handle that unlatches with a push or pull makes your door easy to open with full hands.

05 – Smart structure

When closed, the door’s airtight design and insulated structure keeps your home comfortable in all weathers.

06 – Lasting materials

The wood-grain material looks and feels real but is far more resistant to scratching and fading than natural timber.

07 – Protective cap

Inside, the base is covered by a child-friendly safety cap that also protects from damage when cleaning.

08 – Smooth entrance

The stainless steel door sill has a low clearance of 18mm, making for a level entrance to reduce the risk of slips and falls.

Engineered simplicity.

The entrance to your home epitomises the detail, engineering and care that defines SHAWOOD living. Your front door hides a multitude of safety and performance features, while remaining intuitive to use and beautiful to look at.

Throughout each SHAWOOD, layouts are calibrated to minimise transitional spaces like hallways and maximise the spaces where you spend the most time. This crafted approach opens airy, light-filled entrances which create a grand first impression and a feeling of calm wellbeing as they draw you into the home.

1 – Inspired by Japanese design, SHAWOOD’s statement pivot doors allow open plan homes to be interpreted as one continuous space, or multiple private rooms.

1 – SHAWOOD’s hallmark free-flowing spaces connect everyday family life.

A SHAWOOD interior moves you through your home, in rooms and spaces that open one into the other, with the ebb and flow of the day.

A breath of fresh air.

From paints that have been selected for their low volatility and toxicity to a ventilated wall system that keeps air fresh and pollutant-free, every element of a SHAWOOD is considered with your health in mind.

Individual aspects.

Every SHAWOOD is bespoke, with windows placed to capture cool breezes in summer as well as the warmth of the winter sun. Combined with airtight engineering, this crafted approach means that each home is optimised for comfort, to its location.

A living experience.

Whether you need a workshop or kids’ play area, a spare room or a home office, SHAWOOD homes are designed to accommodate varied lifestyles, with a selection of floorplans and features.

2 – S eparate lounges offer private spaces for reading, working or multi-purpose living.

The kitchen is the epicentre of the home. By turns a thoroughfare or meditative space to prepare meals, the kitchen is where the fine detail of SHAWOOD design comes to the fore.

Thoughtful design.

SHAWOOD kitchens are shaped by fine-grain research that ensures precision in every detail – the height of a bench, the durability of each finish, the placement of a fixture. Even slamming cupboards are eliminated by soft close hinges, while a preference for deep drawers makes it easy to reach every pot, pan and plate.

Intuitive movement.

From the kitchen to the laundry to the garage, the hub of the home is high-traffic. In a SHAWOOD, designs reduce the time you spend getting to and from these key areas. Light switches and door handles are also aligned, intentionally placed and easy to find in the dark.

The perfect fit.

We partner with leading suppliers to make sure each SHAWOOD has appliances that add value to your life and your home, seamlessly integrating dishwashers and fridges for streamlined cooking and clean-ups.

2 – Kitchens with extensive SHINKA

Living areas with wide-open views leverage SHAWOOD structural beams to generous effect, creating spaces that are memorable and full of light.

Open to nature.

1 – Private balconies to principal suites capture views and landscapes in select home designs.

2 – Enduring exteriors that connect to nature.

SHAWOOD LIFESTYLE

Intelligent use of space means everyone has their own in a SHAWOOD.

Bedrooms and suites become insulated sanctuaries; places to relax, read a book and rest.

Your escape, at home.

Every SHAWOOD is oriented for privacy, allowing bedrooms to capture natural light and views without being overlooked. Principal bedrooms in particular are true suites: spacious, calm and effortlessly enjoyable.

rincipal suites include walk-in wardrobes standard.

rincipal ensuites feature ample storage, dual basins, and freestanding baths.

1 – Spaces for families to play and grow, together.

1 – Safe and secure gardens, sensitively landscaped with native planting.

A strong ethos of sustainability runs through SHAWOOD. We believe in building homes and communities for longevity, and we offer a range of smart features to help you tread lighter over the years.

Smart glass.

To combat the light and heat of the Australian sun, SHAWOOD homes use smart low-e window glazing. As well as minimising the fading effect of UV rays on your furniture, this high-tech glass can reduce internal heat gain by up to 35%.

Renewable energy.

SHAWOOD homes are equipped with solar panels and heat pumps as standard, and can also support electric vehicle charging and battery backup for sustainable energy storage.

Water savings.

Rainwater storage is built in beneath your home, storing thousands of litres for waste or irrigation. Inside, pressure management technology helps you use less water, without even noticing.

2 – Features like low-e glazing reduce the need for air conditioned cooling.

1 – SHAWOOD communities are natural places, woven through by Satoyama or “green ribbons”.

Creating community.

Cohesive in character while welcoming individual tastes, a SHAWOOD neighbourhood looks and feels harmonious. Each is composed in response to its natural setting, shaped by design philosophies perfected in Japan and adapted for Australia.

We begin by considering every element of the environment: land and waters, flora and fauna, orientation and ambience. Wherever we can, we maintain existing treelines and bush, and we enhance our ecosystems with thoughtfulness and care, planting five native trees for every home we build.

The human experience is also carefully considered, through shared environments that foster living connections between people and places. Communities are threaded by landscaped corridors; green ribbons that invite residents to stroll, run or cycle through nature.

2 – Resident-only lounge, pool and tennis court. Norman Estates, Gledswood Hills.
3 – Larger SHAWOOD communities are centred around nature, bringing neighbours together in active open spaces.

Where passion meets precision.

Technology and innovation are the foundations of SHAWOOD. The incredible potential of our unique post and beam metal joint system underpins every architectural feature, while ensuring a home that is both flexible and of enduring quality.

SHAWOOD Research & Development
A heritage of innovation.

Born in the 1990s at our Kyoto research and development facility, the SHAWOOD system was developed as a response to the region’s earthquakes and subsequent fires. The hybrid structure maintains its integrity under extreme forces, while also enabling large rooms and open spaces, including double-height voids and raked ceilings.

Even before the construction of the first SHAWOOD in 1995, Sekisui House’s Comprehensive Housing Research & Development Institute was committed to ceaselessly innovating and improving homes and lifestyles. One of the world’s largest testing facilities, the institute can measure the performance of homes and materials in ambient temperatures as low as -40ºC and as high as 60ºC. Heat-resistance, weather tightness, ergonomics, acoustics and accessibility are all tested year-round, while a specialised earthquake simulator regularly ensures the strength and rigour of new SHAWOOD home designs.

The SHAWOOD structural timbers that frame your home are sourced from sustainable forests in Northern Europe. The cold climate here slows the growth of trees, yielding the stronger, denser wood required for homebuilding.

The timbers are cut into thin strips, or lamina, to reveal and remove any weaknesses. The strongest sections from each tree are then assembled into beams using high-performance adhesive to bond the wood together. Each beam – which can span up to 8 metres – is steam treated at immense pressures and temperatures. This process imbues the wood with the strength of steel, making it capable of supporting the structure of your home.

Manufacturing and Quality Control Centre.

Every new SHAWOOD in Australia takes shape in our Ingleburn, NSW Manufacturing and Quality Control Centre. The only facility equipped to pre-engineer SHAWOOD quality outside of Japan, this high-tech, highly efficient factory harnesses computerised manufacturing to guide expert construction.

The process begins in Sydney with the creation of your unique building plans. These are then sent to Japan, where they are translated into computer-programmed manufacturing data: a digital blueprint. Back in the Ingleburn factory, this data guides our smart machinery to cut posts and beams exactly to size.

The timbers are then assembled to form the structure of your home, using laser-guided technology for the utmost accuracy. At this stage, metal joint fittings are also added in a step that ensures your SHAWOOD will come together with millimetre-perfect precision.

2 – The machinery in our Ingleburn factory is imported from Japan, and is the only technology of its kind in Australia.
3 – The precision of the machinery minimises waste on-site, while ensuring the utmost accuracy in construction.

2 – M16 single-threaded tensile bolt, stainless steel

3 – B eam, structural laminated wood

4 – Drift pin, stainless steel

5 – Metal joint fitting, electrodeposition coated steel

Traditional joints are considered the weakest point of any structure, but in a SHAWOOD they are up to three times stronger thanks to our engineered metal joint system, and our preference for high-performance steel bolts instead of nails.

Built to endure and resist corrosion and rusting with a cationic electrodeposition coating, these metal fittings have a load-bearing strength of up to 10 tonnes each. Together with the post and beam system, the joints make it possible to support more weight with fewer interior walls – which means more natural light and larger open spaces in your home.

Engineered for living.

The clean lines of a SHAWOOD are a defining feature of the accuracy of the system. With no imperfections to hide, there is no need for obscuring cornicing, and architraves. This allows precise, square-set ceilings and windows to that add to the simple, sophisticated aesthetic of each room.

Clearview design is an example of the continual innovation that shapes and reshapes SHAWOOD. Empowered by the strength and length of our laminated beams, and the adaptability of the hybrid construction system, the Clearview philosophy replaces walls with glass, and solidity with light and connection to nature. These natural connections are further enhanced by reducing level changes, removing the need for steps to alfresco areas and backyards. A sense of flow permeates throughout – in expansive, visually interconnected spaces, and in subtle detailing that blurs the boundaries between interior and exterior living.

SHAWOOD Clearview
1 – Innovation you can see, in purity of finishes and spaces.
2 – Every detail is crafted for seamless indoor-outdoor connections.
