A series weaving story-telling and the creative arts
From Ordinary Objects to High Art: The Composer Tells Us How He Did It! In 2017, Dr. Zach Zubow was commissioned by the Bechtler Ensemble to compose a piece inspired by Jean Tinguely’s kinetic sculpture, Santana. The Bare Plateau, composed for flute, guitar, cello, double bass, and percussion, embodies the artist’s use of motion and found objects through weaving melodies and harmonies that follows an erratic pattern of motion. The piece also explores various compositional styles and forms developed in the 20th and 21st centuries while still maintaining a semblance rooted in traditional music. The listener will be able to hear the mechanisms of the sculpture, the turbulent beginning, followed by the perpetual motion representative of Tinguely’s kinetic sculpture. Zach will guide us through the creative process from ordinary to sublime!

THE GRASS IS ALWAYS GREENER: An update on the tennis facility landscaping project
It has come to our attention that the grass at our tennis facility is DYING! While it was previously lush and pristine, a weed free paradise perfect to sink your sneakers into, it has since become crisp and brown in the last couple of weeks. What gives?
Far from lush, pristine, or any other adjective one could use to describe perfect turf, the tennis lawn had seen far better days. A combination of poor drainage and soil conditions had over the years rendered it a weedy and sparse mess. While in situ turf renovation is certainly possible, it takes a large amount of time and effort to achieve results. Our determination was that a drastic change was in order. Early this summer we plan to completely re-sod the tennis facility lawn with zoysia grass turf. It will in fact be lush, and green, and lovely. The process involved begins with the removal of the existing turf and weeds. As we all know, pulling up deep rooted perennial weeds and Bermuda grass is often an exercise in futility, so herbicides are employed to kill out the existing vegetation, roots and all. As a precaution, a series of two applications several weeks apart are used to ensure complete removal. Voila- crispy brown lawn, just what we need! Following this step, the ground will be scraped, raked, leveled and prepared as a perfect base for fresh green sod. While it is unsightly, it is an essential part of the process of getting our space into Myers Park shape. Another exiting improvement will be the replacement of the poorly installed (and falling over) industrial style path lights. While the turf bed is being prepared the old lighting will be removed, trenching dug for new wiring, and high end brass path lights by Unique Lighting will be installed along all walkways. These lights will not only be far more aesthetically pleasing but also reduce our electric consumption drastically with the incorporation of low voltage LED technology. Additional repairs to cracked concrete, drainage systems, and a slow transition to an improved planting scheme are all in the works as well. So as we gaze across the “golden plain” of tennis to the beautiful green of the golf course, know that in a few short months, the grass will indeed be greener. On both sides. Scott Kennon, CGCS, Director of Golf Course Operations
