Two great hikes! Choose your adventure at Las Brumas EcoPark, easily one of El Salvador’s best spots to get up close and personal with the volcanoes. This coffee cooperative turned ecotourism destination is located right in the middle of the three most iconic volcanoes in the country: Izalco, Ilamatepec (or locally known as Santa Ana) and Cerro Verde.

If you choose the Izalco Volcano, you’re in for an intense, steep and rocky hike to the summit. Revel in your achievement while standing atop the perfect peak, and make sure to get great photos of the moon-like crater and the panoramic views of the country below.

If you choose to hike the tallest volcano in the country, Ilamatepec (2,365 mts or 6,404 ft.), or locally known as Santa Ana, you’ll hike through the high plateau and dwarf forests filled with gigantic maguey plants - a unique landscape in all of Mesoamerica. At the top you’ll feel the heat of the volcano’s boiling crater lake. This aquamarine pool is over 300 meters (984 ft.) deep!

Forma parte del Sistema de Áreas Naturales Protegidas de El Salvador, y además es parte del Área Protegida Trinacional Montecristo, compartida con Guatemala y Honduras. En Montecristo podrás encontrar bosques nebuloso, mixto de pinos y encinos y también plantaciones de ciprés, los cuales podrás recorrer por senderos, disfrutando de hermosos paisajes y de su extraordinaria flora y fauna. Además en el Parque podrás apreciar y conocer la historia de una mina de hierro y de cultivos de añil, caña de azúcar y café. Visita el hermoso casco colonial que data de hace más de 220 años, y no se te olvide preguntar por el Jardín de 100 Años, donde encontrarás cientos de especies distintas de orquídeas. Montecristo National Park: Orquids and Cloud Forests

This park is said to be perhaps El Salvador’s most outstanding wildlife sanctuary and home to a fantastic diversity of flora. Montecristo forms part of El Salvador’s National System of Protected Areas. It is also part of the Montecristo Trinational Protected Area, which is shared by Guatemala and Honduras. Here, you will be able to learn about iron mining, indigo fields, sugar cane and coffee production. Visit the beautiful historic hacienda that dates back over 220 years, and make sure you ask for the 100 Year Garden (Jardin de 100 Años), where hundreds of exotic orquid species are carefully tended to and on display. After the entry office, drive 12 km. to the area called Los Planes. The dirt road is very steep and it is recommended that only 4x4 vehicles travel there, especially during the rainy season (May-October). En Vehículo: Desde San Salvador tome la autopista hacia el aeropuerto RN-5S, luego se desvía para tomar la carretera del litoral hacia el oriente del país CA-2E. Al llegar al Puente de Oro y unos metros después del puente toma la calle hacia la derecha que lleva a Isla de Méndez. Continúa por esta calle hasta el final y luego cruza a su izquierda tomando una calle de tierra por unos ocho kilómetros hasta llegar a la comunidad de Isla de Méndez. Transporte Público: Toma la ruta 302 en la terminal sur. Bajese en la parada de San Marcos Lempa a unos pasos del Puente de Oro. De ahí, tome la ruta 378 hacia la Isla de Mendez. Nota: Sólo hay dos buses al día. Uno parte a las 12:15 pm y el otro a la 1:20 pm.

Location: Isla de Méndez, Bahía de Jiquilisco, Usulután Time from San Salvador: 1h 45 min. By Car: From San Salvador, take the highway toward the Comalapa Airport. Then turn east along the coastal highway CA-2E and continue on this road until reaching Puente de Oro (golden bridge). A few meters after the bridge, take the street to the right that will take you to Isla de Mendez. Stay on this road until it ends, and then turn left on to a dirt road. Take this dirt road 13 km. until reaching the Isla de Mendez community. By Bus: From San Salvador, take Route 302 from the southern terminal. Get off at the San Marcos Lempa stop that is a few meters past the Puente de Oro (golden bridge). From there, take Route 378 all th way to the Isla de Mendez community. ¿Cómo llego? En Vehículo: Te vas por el Litoral al este, pasas por la ciudad de Usulután, al terminar de pasar el centro te encuentras con un super mercado La Despensa de Don Juan. Como a 200 metros siguiendo recto, por la misma calle, hay una ferretería en la esquina y allí, en una calle pavimentada cruzas a la derecha, no hay rótulo que diga Puerto Parada. *Si te encuentras con un SuperSelectos, significa que ya te pasaste y que tienes que regresar. Cuando ya cruzaste a la derecha, sigues la calle recto recto hasta el fondo que es Puerto Parada. Al final de la calle, ya en Puerto Parada, cruzas a la derecha, y buscas el Restaurante Xiriualtique, alli puedes dejar el carro. En ese restaurante, si consumes algo, una soda, un jugo o algo, ya no te cobran el parqueo. Transporte Público: Tomas el bus en la terminal del Sur en San Marcos Ruta 302 a Usulutan. Luego tomas en la terminal de Usulutan y/o Salida de Usulután a San Miguel. Espera el bus que conduce a Puerto Parada, el bus es único.

By Car: Take the coastal highway east until you reach Usulutan. After passing through downtown Usulutan, you will come to the supermarket: La Despensa de Don Juan. About 200 meters ahead, along the same road, you will see a hardware store or “ferreteria” on the corner. At that corner, turn right and follow the paved road. There is no sign pointing toward Puerto Parada. *If you reached the other supermarket, Super Selectos, you’ve gone too far and need to turn back. After turning right toward Puerto Parada, continue straight until reaching the town of Puerto Parada. At the end of the road (in the town of Puerto Parada), turn right and look for Restaurante Xiriualtique, where you can park. If you buy a food or drink in the restaurant, they will not charge for parking. By Bus: Take the bus in the southern terminal in San Marcos, Ruta 302 to Usulutan. Then in the Usulutan terminal o Usulutan Exit, take the bus toward San Miguel. Then wait for the bus to Puerto Parada. There is only one.
