April 2018
The Iguazu Falls are surrounded by a subtropical rainforest. This majestic freak of nature, became a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and was recently selected as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature. Upon arrival the group will take the ecological train which was designed exclusively for this park. The train, having no doors or windows, gives the possibility of being in direct contact with the environment. The first stop is the Devil’s Throat Station, where you will walk along the catwalk without difficulty. Reach the balcony to observe this great leap of indescribable beauty and energy, offering an impressive mix of sounds and landscapes. Return to the station to board the train to reach the Upper and Lower circuits, which complete the fascinating experience of visiting the Falls. To close your day at the Iguazu National Park, take the lower circuit catwalks and live a more intimate experience with the landscape and the charming
corners of the forest. Lunch and Entrance fee to the National Park are included. In the late afternoon we will visit the Guarani community in the jungle. The Guaranis are an indigenous community that has lived in this area long before the early Spanish Conquistadors arrived in 1541. A few centuries ago there were nearly 5 million Guaranis; now, sadly there are barely 270,000 who are the living safe-keepers of this culture. Opening the doors to their community they will reveal the secrets of the jungle, their natural medicine, culture, songs, dances, crafts, philosophy of life, and beliefs. Discover the “Spirit of the Trees”, a walk where you will learn to walk inside the Jungle guided by Aboriginal experts. The Guaranís were once one of the most influential American Indian peoples in the southern part of South America. They were settled in the tropical forests of Paraguay, northeastern Argentina and southern Brazil.

When the Spanish first arrived, many Guaranís helped them in their war against other native American Indian groups. But some turned against the Spanish and fought to protect their freedom and their way of life. This process continued into the nineteenth century by which time the Guaranís were basically enslaved and forced to work for Spanish landowners. It was a harsh, exploitative system. Some of these Guaranís were converted to Christianity and moved into Jesuit Missions. The Jesuits, an order of Catholic priests, had become a very powerful force in Latin America. In fact, they often were seen as enemies of the Spaniards as their loyalty was to the Catholic Church, and not to Spain which is why the Spanish crown ordered the Jesuits out of South America in 1767. The Guaranís who lived at the missions were pushed out, and many returned to their old way of life in the jungle. The Guaraní language is still widely spoken in Paraguay. The Guaranís have a “secular,” a “secret,” and a “sacred” language. While all Guaranís speak the secular language, the sacred language is used only by male and female elders. They receive divine messages and transmit them to the rest of the group. The secret language on the other hand is used only by religious leaders. It is called Ñe’e pará, meaning “the words of our Fathers.” It is the task of the group leader to find out the origin of a baby’s soul and then give him or her a sacred name. Nowadays Guaranís have a Spanish name for everyday use, as well as a secret Guaraní name. Transfer back to the Loi Suites Iguazú hotel for dinner and site inspection. Overnight at Loi Suites. Breakfast included.
