MPS Language Summit
Celebrating Language as a Pathway to College, Career, and Life Success Welcome to the 2018 Language Summit! The Milwaukee Public Schools Language Summit celebrates culture, diversity, and language. This event showcases the success of our bilingual, dual language, immersion, English as a Second Language (ESL), First Nations, and world language programs. Learning a second language can be a valuable career strength. With the demands of the current workforce, a second language can lead to a job that is competitive and rewarding. MPS bilingual and ESL programs maintain a student’s native language while acquiring a second language. MPS immersion schools are some of the best in the nation, with French, German, Italian, and Spanish options. World language programs allow students to learn a second language in elementary, middle, and high school. Students in MPS schools speak more than 80 native languages. Please enjoy immersing yourself in their cultures and languages! View performances by our talented students highlighting the cultural richness in our schools. Sample delicious ethnic foods prepared by youth in our culinary arts program. Visit our bilingual, immersion, and world language school displays. Select a session to find information about all the great language opportunities in MPS. After you have explored our summit, please be sure to connect with an MPS representative at the department table that fits your needs. ] If you are interested in career options in Milwaukee Public Schools, please visit our human resources staff and learn about the hiring process. ] To register your child in a language program or discover enrollment options, please stop at the Student Services table. ] If you are a community member who would like to support our students, please chat with our community engagement staff. Thank you for coming today. We hope that your day is enjoyable and educational!

A Brief History of Bilingual Education in Milwaukee and Bilingualism Tony Bรกez, Ph.D., Director, Milwaukee Board of School Directors, District 6 Room 132 This session provides a brief history of why, from the beginning, bilingual programs in Milwaukee were unique in the nation as they embraced the goals of bilingualism and multiculturalism. Many of the students who participated in these programs are the bilingual leaders of today. When the federal government and states de-emphasized bilingualism and focused on Englishonly, Milwaukee continued with its programs and further developed language immersion schools, which are among the best. MPS is moving toward bilingualism and multiculturalism for all students. To make this happen, there is a need for parents, students, and educators to engage in sustained advocacy. This session offers perspectives on what we can do together.
