How to Select a School for Your Child MPS offers strong academic programs across the city. Every school is staffed with dedicated, licensed, highly qualified teachers and administrators who are committed to the personal success of your child. Your choice of school depends upon the needs of your family and student. Many families consider three factors when choosing a school: type of school, programs within a school, and transportation. ] Type of school – MPS offers neighborhood schools, neighborhood specialty schools, citywide specialty schools, charter schools, partnership schools and comprehensive middle and high schools. Learn about types of schools on page 5. ] Programs within a school – Many MPS schools offer specialty programs such as arts or bilingual education. Information about programs is on page 5. ] Transportation – The district offers transportation to students based upon many factors including a student’s special education status, the type of school, and the student’s home address. Read more about transportation on page 8.

How to Find Schools To best meet every child’s needs, families may select from all schools across the district. For many families, the neighborhood school is the best choice. Neighborhood schools give priority to children living in the area surrounding the school. Attending a neighborhood school allows your child to walk to school, if desired, and is convenient for daily transportation and school events. Many neighborhood schools offer specialty coursework and programs. To find the schools closest to your home, check the map on page 24 or visit mpsmke.com/findaschool and enter your address in the Find a School tool. Click on a school to learn about school programs, hours, staff, and before- and after-school programs. This online tool lets you search for schools by name, grade level, specialties and programs.

Schedule a School Visit You may call any school to ask questions and schedule a visit. School visits allow you to meet the principal, tour the school, visit classrooms and meet the caring teachers and staff who will help your child succeed. Telephone numbers are in the listings in this booklet. Many parents bring children along on visits so they can feel comfortable in the school, meet teachers and staff, and take part in the decision.

Enroll Your Child After you’ve selected a school, begin the enrollment process. You may enroll online, at a school, or at district enrollment events. Learn more about enrollment on page 9.

Assistance for Students Who Are Homeless The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act defines the homeless as “individuals who lack a fixed, regular and adequate nighttime residence.” This includes children and youth whose family is sharing the housing of others; who are living in motels, hotels, or transitional or emergency shelters; or whose nighttime residence is a place not normally used for housing. Unaccompanied youth (students not in the company of a parent or guardian) and migratory children – who qualify as homeless because they are living in circumstances described above – are included in this definition. Homeless children have rights and are eligible for services, including: ] The right to stay in their school of origin (the school they were attending prior to becoming homeless or the last school attended) ] Free school meals and school supplies ] Waivers of school fees In addition, students temporarily living outside the school’s busing region may qualify for transportation to the school they previously attended. Parents or guardians of homeless children or unaccompanied youth can learn more by talking to the homeless contact or social worker at their child’s school. Parents/guardians may also contact the Homeless Education Program at MPS Central Services at 5225 W. Vliet Street, Milwaukee. Call (414) 475-8911 for more information. Types of Schools in the MPS Family Milwaukee Public Schools offers many options. We invite you to learn more about the many types of schools in our family! Neighborhood schools (also called attendance area schools) give priority for acceptance to children from the area surrounding the school. Children from other neighborhoods are admitted as space permits. A neighborhood school is the best choice for many families since neighborhood schools are convenient for transportation, carpools, school events and nearness to classmates. Neighborhood specialty schools offer special programs or areas of study such as the arts or technology. These schools give priority enrollment to students from the neighborhood, then admit students from outside the area as space permits. Citywide specialty schools have special programs or areas of study such as the arts, International Baccalaureate, gifted and talented, Montessori or language immersion. Many Montessori citywide specialty schools offer priority to students living within the school’s neighborhood. Each school can provide more information about its enrollment policies. Comprehensive middle schools and comprehensive high schools offer a robust academic curriculum. Extracurricular programming and student supports serve a wide range of needs and diverse student populations. Schools strive to ensure that every student is on a path to succeed in college and career. These schools have priority attendance areas, but also accept students who live outside those areas when space is available. Charter schools operate with greater independence than other district schools. Some charter schools have their own enrollment process. Alternative schools offer a path to success for students who may face specific challenges or require more flexibility than a traditional school setting, including students at risk of dropping out.

Prior Montessori experience is typically required for enrollment in higher grades. Music Specialty – Most MPS schools offer music instruction. We also offer nonacademic and extracurricular services and activities that give children with disabilities ages 3–21 an equal opportunity for participation. If you suspect your child has special education needs, request an evaluation by talking with your child’s teacher or principal. Transportation Milwaukee Public Schools provides bus transportation to students who qualify. Bus transportation may also be available for students with special needs or situations, or who are homeless. Each school can best explain the transportation policies. Some MPS charter schools set their own transportation policies; contact these schools for details. Important Terms ] Walk Zone – Most elementary schools have a one-mile walk zone and most middle and high schools have a two-mile walk zone. Transportation regions are different for elementary/middle schools and for high schools. ] Moving – If you move outside of your elementary or middle school transportation region, your child may receive transportation if an existing bus stop is available. If no bus stop exists, you must either provide transportation or change your child’s school. Each school can provide more information. ] Bus Stops – Students in grades K3–5 are expected to walk up to a quarter mile to a safe corner stop.
