REVIEW OF FINANCIAL STATEMENTS: Kristie Woroniecki presented the financial statement for the period ending October 31, 2011. The total assets of the Association as of October 31, 2011 are listed at $191,992.91; the total liabilities at $94,751.09 and the total members' equity is listed at $97,241.82. Kim Chiodo seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. Kristie Woroniecki presented the financial statement for the period ending November 30, 2011. The total assets of the Association as of November 30, 2011 are listed at $198,272.78; the total liabilities at $88,917.02 and the total members' equity is listed at $109,355.76. Cindy Austin seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. Kristie stated that if the current estimates are correct, the Association should end the year with about a $6000 profit. A few of the biggest factors in the reduced income compared to last year were in the areas of the journal, the stallion service auction and in fundraising: Journal advertising revenue was $14,675 in 2011 vs $23,762.52 in 2010. There will be changes within the journal for 2012, including a new editor; therefore we are hopeful that the revenue will increase for 2012. The SSS ended at $68,320 down from $74,590, a difference of $6270 which reflects as a $1254 loss of MQHA income (20%). PRESIDENT’S REPORT: Trish Steele explained that she wanted to follow up with the Board on participation by the National Directors at more of the MQHA Board meetings. She has made contact with both Kelly Chapman and with Chris Baldwin. Kelly will be able to attend the MQHA Annual Membership meeting. Chris indicated to Trish that she would be available via conference call. Trish explained that it is important to foster a stronger dialog between the National Directors and MQHA. Trish also followed up on the Board requested biography from Tracie Dinehart, our proposed new legal counsel. Trish explained that there is no definite time for serving as our legal counsel. Tracie is excited to work with us. Trish also reminded the Directors about completing and returning the evaluation form for executive secretary. She stated that she would like to have time to compile the information, complete the analysis and get the information back to Kristie Woroniecki. Trish closed her report by saying that she is really looking forward to all of the activities at the Convention. VICE PRESIDENT’S REPORT: Peggy Sindt explained that there had been a fundraising meeting and the group talked about evaluating fundraising options. There were many people in attendance. Peggy stated that she really appreciated everyone's effort to attend that meeting and bring good discussion. Warren is working on budgets and needs input from Directors within the next few days on any changes that will be requested. OFFICE REPORT: Kristie discussed the new AQHA Novice Championship show and is having the information posted on the website. There were a lot of questions that needed clarification. The office will create a letter of intent for the Novice Championship show and it will also be put on the website. The deadline for that letter of intent will be around June 1. COMMITTEE REPORTS AWARDS: Monty Montgomery stated that the committee is finalizing the purchase of the awards. Saddles are ordered and paid for. Some of the awards were purchased at congress. The committee is working very hard to stay within the budget. CONVENTION: Tiffany Weitzel stated that the banquet dinner tickets are now available. Megan Hirschman congratulated Tiffany on her 30th birthday. EASTER SHOW: Monty discussed some ideas for the Easter show. They may offer a youth art contest, utilizing the MQHA logo or a MQHA design, the Easter show and some kind of a slogan for Easter show. The requirement to enter the art contest is that they would need to be eligible to show in the youth classes. The winner might get a free weekend of showing at the Easter show or something along that line. The winning design would go on a t-shirt to be given out at the show. The back of the shirt would list sponsors and the shirts would be given to anyone entering a class at the show. FUNDRAISING: Megan Hirschman stated that the Fundraising committee met at the end of November. They have established an individual giving program as well as a corporate giving program. Individual gifts will be from $25-$250. A pamphlet was designed and it can also be used for individual event fundraising as well as general events and for gifts in kind. The Star Partner program hand-out was updated. The one star level at $250 was removed. It was decided that the money for the Star Program will be directed more toward year end

awards and to the Queen although the verbiage will allow for other projects as well. Individual events will be responsible for their own fundraising. The forms have been produced without any dates so they can be used for several years. Megan requested Directors respond by end of the week if there are any mistakes on the material. She asked that Directors let her know if they are able to get a corporate sponsor. Megan will keep track of them so that people aren't duplicating efforts. FUTURITY: Jacque Moody stated that the Futurity Committee met and accomplished quite a bit. The biggest focus was increasing revenue for the show. The committee is going to add a $25 class sponsorship to go along with the existing $100 buckle sponsors and the $300 banner sponsor (or $250 if we already have the banner). The committee will offer the trainer sale again. The new format will be to offer a trainer at $350 and give the customer a certificate worth $500 off a trainer's services. The final format needs to be approved. The committee also discussed the various classes and the format of those classes. The Committee will meet again in Jan. to finalize the ideas. HALL OF FAME: The committee is working to narrow down the recommendations made for Hall of Fame. They will have a final decision soon. HARVEST CLASSIC: Kim Chiodo stated that she heard a lot of negative discussion about the barrels being held on Sunday and the fact that the trail is held back to back on Friday. The show made an acceptable profit and was up 20 stalls from last year. JOURNAL/WEBSITE: Tiffany Weitzel passed out a new design to market MQHA. The office is getting quotes on it for use on some new apparel. Tiffany has also been in touch with gohorseshow.com and they have put together a great package for MQHA. They are going to put together a tile on the website to help us advertise the Association. They are also going to include three pages of advertising for our events. They have also agreed to be a sponsor of Easter show and gave 10 pages in their online magazine for prizes. They are also going to send a representative to take candid photos. The exposure will help us promote our events and make the shows more visible to a bigger audience. Tiffany also stated that the Journal Committee will be meeting soon with the new editor for discussion about the direction of the MQHA Journal and the website. MEMBERSHIP: Kathy Christensen stated that she attended the Winter Horse Fest in Grand Rapids. She had help from Jennifer Dolby and September Croel. They had a lot of fun at the event and it was well attended. It had sort of a large sale – auction type atmosphere. They handed out AQHA and MQHA materials and answered a lot of questions. She stated that it was a great experience. MSBA: Jacque Moody stated that the MSBA slot classes will run at the Futurity in the same format as before and that they are already filling the slots for 2012. QUEEN: Kathy Christensen asked if she and September Croel could offer a time slot during the convention for a Queen's contest question and answer session. Several ideas were thrown around and the Convention Committee agreed that it would be fine if Kathy and September want to put something together. RULES: Megan Hirschman made a motion to ratify the electronic vote (see electronic voting, below). Kathy Christensen seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. The committee reviewed the new AQHA rule changes, discussed the order of classes on the showbills, discussed ideas for marketing and awards. All MQHA approved shows were represented at that meeting. STALLION SERVICE SALE: Kristie Woroniecki stated that 98 Stallions went into the December catalog. There are already updates for a supplemental catalog. The committee has five of the ten halter stallions that are involved in the Iowa Breeders Futurity which should be a good thing for our sale. YOUTH: Kristie Woroniecki stated that an idea to sell wrist bracelets for a youth association fundraiser has been approved by the youth president. The bracelets will be available for the first time at the Convention. OLD BUSINESS: Confirmation of the new legal counsel -Megan Hirschman made a motion to approve Tracie Dinehart as the new MQHA legal counsel. Jacque Moody seconded the motion. The Annual Membership meeting is scheduled for Sunday, January 15 at 9:00 at the University Quality Inn.

MICHIGAN QUARTER HORSE ASSOCIATION – Meeting of the Board of Directors - Jan. 14, 2012 President Trish Steele called a meeting of the MQHA Board of Directors to order at 9:15 a.m. at the Spare Time Bowling Alley in East Lansing, MI. The following Directors and staff were present: Cindy Austin, Kathy Christensen, Charlie Closser, Warren English, Megan Hirschman, MacKenzie Kastl, Julie Leek, Ted Meyer, Monty Montgomery, Jacque Moody, Jody Prime, Mary Robertson, Peggy Sindt, Trish Steele, Karen Waite, Tiffany Weitzel, Kristie Woroniecki and Minae Zomer. Excused were: Ivy Allen, Kim Chiodo, George McCrumb, and Tom Powers. AGENDA: Megan Hirschman made a motion to approve the agenda as presented. Kathy Christensen seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. MINUTES: Karen Waite made a motion to accept the December 6, 2011 Board of Directors minutes. Monty www.MIQuarterHorse.com

Montgomery seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. REVIEW OF FINANCIAL STATEMENTS: Warren English presented the financial statement for the period ending December 31, 2011. The total assets of the Association as of December 31, 2011 are listed at $178,896.04; the total liabilities at $95,970.86 and the total members' equity is listed at $85,191.73. The net income as of the end of December is listed at $6,114.76 compared to $27,453.61 for the same period in 2010. Jacque Moody made a motion to approve the December, 2011 financial statement. Karen Waite seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. Warren explained that the balance sheet shows no big change. The numbers have been consistent since the spring. The Board has been aware that the revenues were down. The early shows were not great and the Association was never able to recover the losses from those shows. The year end awards budget was increased over the 2010 budget. Warren also noted that the 5% discounts off the horse show bills, offered to the members, amounted to over $5500 for the year. This money comes right off the bottom line. TREASURER’S REPORT: The check detail report for December for the general checking account was presented to the Board by Kristie Woroniecki. After review, Megan Hirschman made a motion to accept the report as presented. Monty Montgomery seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. Kristie then presented the accounts payable and receivable reports. After review, Kathy Christensen made a motion to accept the report and Megan Hirschman seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. There were questions regarding the membership to the Michigan Equine Partnership. The Directors asked that the membership not be paid until there is some clarification on a few issues. PRESIDENT’S REPORT: President Trish Steele stated that she appreciated everyone's efforts in getting to the meeting considering the weather. She indicated that she appreciated the Directors' commitment of time, thoughts and energy. She stated that there is a lot of diversity with the Directors and that is needed in an organization with a potential membership that covers broad interests. The Board has made many accomplishments over the year and we need to continue to improve on what we have done already. MQHA is a viable organization full of people who want to participate and provide valuable comments and feedback. Trish hopes for a successful Convention and a wonderful celebration for our membership. VICE PRESIDENT’S REPORT: Vice President Sindt began by discussing the Constitutional Rule changes that would be presented at the Annual Membership meeting. Peggy reminded the board that the purpose of the rule change is to clarify the status of the National Directors as it relates to the MQHA Board. The proposal should help make the National Directors feel more welcome at the meetings and keep them in the loop with the distribution of material for the meetings. The proposal does changes the number of board members who can vote from 21 to 19. It does not change the voting status of the National Directors. Currently, they do not have voting rights except when needed to make a quorum. The proposal maintains the existing situation, but makes them official members of the board. This should give the Board a much better pipeline of information from AQHA to MQHA. Peggy went on to thank everyone on the Board for their commitment to MQHA. She stated that it was a great

Board this year and it was full of energy. She stated that it is important that everyone continue to keep working hard. She thanked everyone for their support of her as Vice President. Peggy stated that she has chosen not to run for re-election. She will not be the Vice President for 2012. Peggy Sindt made a motion to nominate Karen Waite as Vice President. Kathy Christensen seconded the motion. With no other nominations from the floor, Ted Meyer made a motion to close nominations for Vice President. MacKenzie Kastl seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. OFFICE REPORT: The MQHA office has contacted the software programmer who worked on the year end points program, to obtain a quote on some items that need to be updated for 2012. Kristie reviewed the quote with the Board. Warren English made a motion to approve $500 for changes to the Member Ease software. Kathy Christensen seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. Kristie reminded the Directors that the 2012 meeting calendar was included in their board packet. She also requested that the Directors complete the forms that she provided and return them to her during the weekend or send them on to the MQHA office. Kristie asked the Directors to be prepared with a report on their committee for the Annual Membership meeting that would be held on Sunday morning during the Convention. COMMITTEE REPORTS AWARDS: Monty Montgomery stated that all of the awards are accounted for and have been set up for the presentation, with the help of the committee members. The year-end awards cost ended up just under budget but he explained that it will be tough to do the awards again next year on $20,000. He hopes the board will consider increasing the amount. CONVENTION: Tiffany Weitzel stated that there was an overwhelming response with over 200 dinner tickets sold. There were several members that had to be turned away for dinner because of the space constraints. The hotel staff was extremely accommodating. Tiffany hopes that everyone has a great weekend. EASTER SHOW: Monty Montgomery stated that once the Convention weekend is over with, they can start working on the Easter show. The showbill is set. Many of the awards are ordered. FINANCE: Warren English reminded the Directors of the proposed Constitutional Rule change regarding the year end review. The proposal is to change the requirement of the review from yearly to once every three years. The process as it is right now has several steps with several people looking at the books. This would save us quite a bit of money. He also reminded the Directors that most of the certificates of deposit are in the savings account. The certificate of deposit rates were very low and he did not want to lock the money up. If things improve, we can move the money into some new investments. FUNDRAISING: Megan Hirschman reminded the Board that the Fundraising committee met and have finalized the details on the Star Partner Program as well as the Leave A Legacy. The handouts are updated and do not include anything that is date-sensitive so that they can be used for several years. She encouraged the Directors to use this information for anything we get for donations, including gifts in kind. FUTURITY: Jacque Moody stated that the Futurity committee would meet on Sunday after the Annual Membership meeting. The committee has prepared the information on the newly reorganized trainer sale. She will update the Board at the February meeting. MQHA Journal • March/April 2012 • 10

BoardMinutes Meeting of the Board of Directors January 14, 2012 - continued HALL OF FAME: Mary Robertson stated that everything is in place for the Hall of Fame. Mary is also looking for recommendations for next year. There was discussion about putting articles in the journal with past Hall of Fame horses. It would be fun to revisit this information and it would give members some idea of the type of horses that have been nominated in the past. HARBOR CLASSIC: Ted Meyer stated that he has started working on sponsors for 2012. He also stated that there might some issues this year with the refrigeration of the food and with the refreshments typically served at the exhibitor party. He is going to work on these issues, hopes to have a resolution soon. HARVEST CLASSIC: Kristie Woroniecki stated that AQHA has granted the move for the Harvest Classic to September 28 & 29 at the MSU Pavilion. The move was needed in order to accommodate the Pavilion schedule. Kristie is applying to run this show as a two day – four judge event to help eliminate the need for time off from work and school since it is just following the Futurity and just prior to the Novice Championship show and the Congress. INTRODUCTORY SHOW/ALL NOVICE: Jody Prime stated that the committee is still working on putting together a show. The Allegan location is now being used by the Summer Series. Kristie is considering Berrien Springs on the weekend of June 10 or a new Greenville location for July 21. There was discussion about a stigma attached to an open show when MQHA is involved. Jody Prime is interested in the results of the Michigan Horse Council survey. JOURNAL/WEBSITE: The Journal committee met with Cindy and Amy with Saddle Up. They will be publishing our journal effective with the March/April 2012 issue. Tiffany Weitzel stated that Cindy and Amy came to the meeting with a list of questions and ideas. They intend to utilize Facebook a lot more. The journal will be available online soon. There will be member benefits. Members will have the option to view the journal before others can. Members will have one free classified ad per

month. The journal will start to contain some historical pieces. The contract is being worked through and should be finalized soon. Tara Keel will continue to maintain the website for now. Tara has also completed the new Tour T-Shirts. MEMBERSHIP: The new MQHA design is being used on some stickers that the office had made. They turned out really sharp. The design will be on some new clothing items as well. The items will be available to order at several of our events. Kathy Christensen stated that she is in need of 16 volunteers at the MHC expo in March. MHC: Karen Waite explained that the new MHC survey is now available. There is a link to it on the MQHA website. In just a few days, there have already been 288 responses with the majority of the people responding listing quarter horses as their primary focus. The survey will run through the MHC horse expo where they hope to market it more. Once the information is summarized, it should be very informative. The results will help develop a MQHA outreach program. QUEEN: Kathy Christensen stated that there was over $2200 in money and prizes collected for the 2011 Queen's contest. She expressed a special thank you to Bodacious Cowgirl for the generous donation of the saddle. Kathy told the Board that September Croel represented MQHA extremely well. September had a great attitude and is a phenomenal ambassador for the Association. She also placed well at Congress. September will not run again in 2012. September and Kathy will do a question and answer session at 2:00 near the pool during the Convention. Kathy reminded everyone that the age for candidates is 18-25. REGIONAL SHOW: Karen Waite stated that the Regional show will happen again in July. MQHA still needs another steering committee representative. She asked if anyone is interested in doing it. She explained some of the struggles that the show has had. The show was designed to bride a gap between the open show exhibitors and the AQHA exhibitors. STALLION SERVICE SALE: Julie Leek stated that there are currently 144 stallions enrolled in the auction. She is concerned because she has not had a lot of calls from

mare owners for bids. Tom Moore is doing the auctioneering this year. SUMMER SERIES: Kristie Woroniecki explained that the AQHA priority dates for the Summer Series were the weekend of June 10. She applied for a change to the weekend of June 17, but AQHA denied the move. She then applied for a move to June 24 and that was denied as well. The June 10 weekend has not historically been a good weekend for a show. After discussion with several Directors and MQHA members, it was decided to try to move the show to Allegan on Memorial Weekend since MQHA already had the facility penciled in for an all novice show weekend. The change to Memorial Weekend was approved by AQHA. YOUTH: Warren English stated that the youth's Every Hoof Helps program will provide make a donation to the Renew Therapeutic Riding Center during the awards banquet. Minae Zomer will make the presentation. Warren is expecting that the Letter of Intent will be ready soon. There is a potential for a change depending on whether or not the Summer Series will be a youth qualifying show this year or not. Warren reminded the Directors that he is retiring from the Youth Advisor position. BoardMinutes MICHIGAN QUARTER HORSE ASSOCIATION Meeting of the Board of Directors February 14, 2012 President Trish Steele called a meeting of the MQHA Board of Directors to order at 7:02 p.m. This meeting was a conference call. The following Directors and staff were present on the call: Kim Chiodo, Kathy Christensen, Charlie Closser, Wendy Cook, Warren English, Julie Leek, Monty Montgomery, Jacque Moody, Trish Steele, Karen Waite, Morgan Warda, Tiffany Weitzel, and Kristie Woroniecki. Also on the call were National Directors Christa Baldwin and Kelly Chapman. Excused were: Ivy Allen, Cindy Austin, Megan Hirschman, MacKenzie Kastl, George McCrumb, Ted Meyer, Tom Powers, Jody Prime and Mary Robertson. AGENDA: Warren English made a motion to approve the agenda as presented. Jacque Moody seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. MINUTES: Kim Chiodo made a motion to accept the January 14, 2012 Board of Directors minutes. Monty Montgomery seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. REVIEW OF FINANCIAL STATEMENTS: Warren English presented the financial statement for the period ending January 31, 2012. The total assets of the Association as of January 31, 2012 are listed at $221,688.18; the total liabilities at $125,367.23 and the total members’ equity is listed at $96,320.95. The net income as of the end of January is listed at $11,074.22 compared to $10,172.65 for the same period in 2011. Jacque Moody made a motion to approve the January 2012 financial statement. Charlie Closser seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. Warren stated that both the income and the expenses are similar to last year. The Stallion Service Sale is down. The February show stall income is up. Warren said that all indications are that the February show did well this year. TREASURER’S REPORT: The check detail report for January for the general checking account was presented to the Board by Kristie Woroniecki. After review, Kim Chiodo made a motion to accept the report as presented. Tiffany Weitzel seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. Kristie then presented the accounts payable and receivable reports. After review, Kathy Christensen made a motion to accept the report and Charlie Closser seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. Kristie noted that the bill to the Michigan Equine Partnership has been deleted. PRESIDENT’S REPORT: President Steele wished all of the Directors a Happy Valentine’s Day and thanked them for their participation. She then welcomed the new Directors and the National Directors. President Trish Steele stated that there was a performance review submitted during the fourth quarter of 2011 for the executive secretary/treasurer. The information has been tabulated and summarized. She thanked everyone who participated in providing the feedback. Some of the feedback gave goals for the Association which included budget preparation and increasing attendance at the horse shows. Trish also explained that an AIM Grant has been submitted to AQHA for support of the All Novice Shows tentatively scheduled for July. The grant has been received by AQHA and they will notify approval of the grant funding after the AQHA Convention. VICE PRESIDENT’S REPORT: Vice President Waite welcomed the new Directors and thanked the group for giving her the opportunity to serve at the Vice President. www.MIQuarterHorse.com

She asked that everyone be patient while she learns the position and her duties. She has completed the committee assignments and they were given out. She indicated that she tried to be sure that everyone was part of the committees they requested. OFFICE REPORT: Kristie Woroniecki stated that the conference calls that have been set up have been taken care of by Warren English. The Association should be self sufficient with this and not rely on Warren to provide the service as he has generously done in the past. Kristie has looked into the same company and found the rates for the service. The service would cost us $28 per month for the first 475 minutes, then 5.9c per minute after that regardless if we used it or not. After discussion, Trish stated that she would look into a few more options before a decision is made. Kristie then went on to discuss the credit card machine in the office. The machine is down and needs to be replaced. She spent a lot of time looking at options and explained all of them to the Directors. Warren English made motion that we purchase a wireless unit at a cost of $950. Kim Chiodo seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. NATIONAL DIRECTORS: Christa Baldwin and Kelly Chapman asked if the information that they have been forwarding from AQHA is getting to the Directors or if they are getting a duplication of the information. There was no other news to report. COMMITTEE REPORTS CONVENTION: Tiffany Weitzel stated that the convention went really well. It made about $100 – the goal was to not loose money. She has started looking at venues for 2013. The date is penciled in at the University Quality Inn but there is concern that because this year was so well attended, there might not be enough room there. If anyone has ideas for venues, please let her know. To keep the costs down, it would be best if an outside caterer is allowed. EASTER SHOW: Cindy Austin and Monty Montgomery are working on sponsors for the show. Spartan Stores will sponsor welcome/snack area. Monty thanked Kathy Christensen and Jeanne Norcross for that sponsorship. Don and Leah Recchiuti will ring steward again. The committee is looking at a major sponsor for the awards for the show. They should know soon. Stacy Montgomery and Wendy Cook are working on the t-shirt contest for the youth. FUNDRAISING: Kristie stated that the Star Partner and Leave A Legacy brochures are printed. If anyone is in need, please let the office know. FUTURITY: Kristie Woroniecki reported that the next Futurity meeting would be held on February 22, in Lansing. The Committee met last on Convention weekend. JOURNAL/WEBSITE: Tiffany Weitzel stated that there was a nice article on Gohorseshow about the February show. There was a lot of positive feedback on everything. If anyone takes any candid photos, email them to either the journal editor or to the Journal Committee so that they can get on the website. There were two covers sold during the convention and there are still four available. MEMBERSHIP: Kathy Christensen reported that all of the volunteer spaces are filled for the MHC Expo. She is looking forward to the event which will be March 9-11 at the MSU Pavilion in Lansing. Kristie stated that she processed 122 memberships from the February horse show. MQHA is now back to over 800 members. There

was discussion about getting a new members list together and sending a welcome letter out. Tiffany mentioned that there are a lot of people on the MQHA Facebook page and there has been a lot more activity. MHC: Karen Waite mentioned that the big project for the MHC is the survey which is still moving along. There have been over 300 responses and the survey will be available through the MHC Expo in March. She has figured out how to sort the information by primary breed of interest which should provide useful information for all of the horse clubs. REGIONAL SHOW: Karen Waite stated that the Regional Show is working on a survey currently. There have been some issues at OQHA but they are working through them. STALLION SERVICE SALE: Julie Leek stated that there are still several nice stallions still available. YOUTH: Morgan Warda reported that the youth set up an area that was very successful during the tack sale. They brought in $360 for soup and baked goods donations. They also raised $160 for Every Hoof Helps. There were a lot of people in attendance. They gave out about 40 new youth memberships and some free stall coupons. Wendy Cook created a newsletter that was handed out over the weekend. She included information about things that both AQHA and MQHA are doing. She walked around and spoke with people throughout the weekend and was surprised about how many people didn’t know about the new All Novice Show. There is a lot of new information on qualifying for the Youth World Show that needs to be distributed. Wendy also has the updates for the Letter of Intent that she will get to the office. Once the corrections are made, it will be available on the website. OLD BUSINESS: None NEW BUSINESS: None A motion to adjourn was made at 8:05 by unanimous consent without objection. ELECTRONIC BOARD CORRESPONDENCE: MQHA rules now allow for electronic voting when necessary. Any information voted on electronically between meetings will be recorded on the next set of minutes in this section. NEXT MEETING: The next meeting will be Tuesday, March 13 at 7:00 p.m. This is scheduled to be a conference call.

Traveling

with

Your Horse As responsible animal caretakers we can make many decisions that ease and hopefully eliminate stress on our animals during the transportation process. Taylor Fabus, Michigan State University Extension With spring right around the corner, many of us will be loading our horses into trailers and heading to practices, shows, trail rides and more. Traveling, even to the most seasoned show horse, can be a stressful event – just as it is for us. As responsible animal caretakers, we can make many decisions that ease and eliminate stress on our animals during the transportation process. Below are just a few tips to keep in mind as you head to your next event: Keep safety first Each time you hook up your truck and trailer to head to a show, go through a safety checklist. Are truck and trailer lights

working? Did you secure the hitch properly? Are all tire pressures appropriate? Make sure that you have the proper-sized truck to haul your trailer. Do not overload your trailer’s weight capacity. While driving, you must allow extra distance for stopping. Make speed changes and turns more gradually than you would when driving without a loaded trailer. Ignoring these basic guidelines can seriously impact you and your horse’s safety. Keep it cool Heat can build up quickly in a horse trailer. If the weather is warm, be sure to open vents and windows to encourage airflow to the horses. Avoid unloading horses before you reach your destination since

rest areas and fuel stations are not safe areas to unload. If traveling long distances, stop at least every two to three hours to offer water and check your horses. Keep it quick No, this doesn’t mean you can ignore speed limits signs and other traffic laws. It just means to make your best attempt at limiting the amount of time your horse stays in the trailer. Load all tack, equipment and feed first. Animals should be on the trailer for the minimal amount of time possible to avoid injury and stress, especially due to heat.
